Me talking to people who understand literary criticism: of course the audience response model has its flaws. it was an important step in moving away from biographical criticism as default, and it was and is a valuable way for marginalized people to read themselves into a canon designed to exclude them, but i also feel strongly that understanding a work's cultural context matters, and i can't fully get on board with a model that (in its most extreme form, at least) validates disregarding cultural differences and projecting your own context onto a work...

Me in a fandom discussion as soon as someone says "but the author said...": i don't care what the author said. i will interpret the text how i damn well please and if the author doesn't like it they can eat a bag of dicks. if you try to tell me what the author said one more time i will bite you to death.

These are in no particular order, just whatever comes to mind! I'll try to keep somewhat of a timeline in the beginning, but a fully-fleshed out, AO3 fanfic style timeline is a whole post by itself. (I'll gladly type that out too if you think you'll enjoy it 🥴) Creds to my friend for helping me out with some of this!!!

RANDOM HEADCANONS ;

*Short and sweet, no particular order.

• They both love My Chemical Romance; Jiro's favorite album is Danger Days and Jyushi's is Welcome To The Black Parade. (another shoutout to my MCR fans.)

• Jiro plays MCR songs on his guitar for Jyushi to cheer him up.

• Jiro tried to teach Jyushi to play soccer, but he cried went he got mud on his boots and Jiro decided it would be better if Jyushi just watched instead.

• They read Junji Itō together on rainy days, usually accompanied by a blanket and tea that Ichiro made for them.

• They both have AO3 & Wattpad accounts for the sake of reading all the horrible fanfictions and giggling over them.

• Despite really enjoying each other's company, they still bicker like they did when they fake dated.

• Ichiro is proud of his brother for finally finding someone who he can spend time wish, while Kuko is completely disgusted by the fact Jyushi has a date. ( /lh ) Parents.

• Jiro once texted Ichiro, verbatim, "Can u tell your boyfriend's emo friend to text me back" and Ichiro left him on read.

• They once went on a double date with Ichiro and Kuko and I'm sure everyone can imagine how horrible and awkward that turned out.

• They are avid Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution players and usually have competitions to see who can score higher.

• Jyushi gave Jiro a wolf stuffed animal to match with Amanda and Jiro falls asleep with it in arms reach every night.

• Jyushi is a vegetarian and Jiro always remembers to get him something meat-free when they go out to eat.

TIMELINE HEADCANONS ;

• Jiro and Jyushi originally didn't like each other very much; Jiro thought Jyushi might be as stuck-up as everyone says he was, and Jyushi assumed that Jiro thought that. They didn't avoid one another, but they definitely didn't go out of their ways to interact.

• They were in a fake relationship for a few weeks, just because they were tired of being teased for constantly being alone. It happened at a high school dance, when Jiro went to sit on the bleachers and saw Jyushi sitting there too. He decided to sit next to him and it caused them to bicker back and forth for a while, then it dissolved into them devising a plan to "fake date". (If y'all want that extended timeline post...)

cont. : When they were around other people, like walking down the hallway, they would very begrudgingly hold hands. Jiro comments about how cold Jyushi's hands are and Jyushi snaps back with something like, "Well, your hands are clammy- s-so. . . Shut up!" This would inevitably lead to them bickering, shushing each other, smiling awkwardly at the people around them, shared glare, and repeat.

• They only really started to like each other's company when they realized that they had none in common than they thought. In canon, Jiro loves manga and Jyushi likes alternative fashion (visual kei), so naturally one of the things they had in common was owning Junji Itō mangas. They also share similar music taste, My Chemical Romance being the main one. ;)) This was found out when Jyushi went to Jiro's place for the first time. It was necessarily planned, but in a moment of worry they made plans to hang out within earshot of the other students. Jyushi didn't really pick up on the fact it was just a show and showed up at Jiro's place later that day.

• Their first official date happened partly because they realized they may actually have feelings for one another, and because the questions about how long they'd been together, how many dates they'd been on, how they met from their classmates became unavoidable. Since both of them are pretty terrible liars, they decided the only way to get out of this was an actual date. . . Were they lowkey flirting then? Absolutely.

• Because they're both teenagers with not much in the way of an income other than their rap groups, their first date was at a foodcart. The place was too crowded and loud for Jyushi's liking, and Jiro being the natural gentleman he is offered to buy their meals so Jyushi could get away from the noise.

cont. // slight writing bonus : Jyushi sits on a stairway away from the foodcarts, looking at the bright lights of the Shinjuku division. It doesn't take long for Jiro to return with their food--burgers. Jiro digs around in the paper bag containing their food awkwardly for a moment before pulling one out and handing it to Jyushi.

Jyushi hesitates as well, but eventually takes it from Jiro, who only then sits down next to him on the stairwell. He sits closer than Jyushi would have expected. Jyushi huffes, pulling back the wrapping of the burger, he turns to Jiro with a slightly annoyed expression, opening his mouth to speak;

"You know, I'm vegetarian. . . -"

"I know. It-it's a veggie burger."

Jyushi closes his mouth again and a small blush creeps over his face. His and Jiro's eyes meet for a moment,

"Oh. . . Well, thank you. . ."

and then he looks away before taking a quick bite of the burger in order to hide his face.

It seemed silly. . . though, no one had ever been that observant or caring toward him.

How did Rose get past Pink’s entourage? I feel like White Diamond might have been involved. I actually saw a post theorizing that Rose only poofed Pink and then gave her gem to White for shattering, and maybe Eyeball just saw Rose attack Pink with a sword and assumed Rose shattered her? It really seems odd that White Diamond hasn’t even been so much as mentioned on the show; all we have proving her existence is the Diamond Authority symbol, and the murals in the Moon Base.  That she is absent from a trial concerning the murder of one of her sisters seems awfully suspicious.  Then again, it’s speculated that she is the ruler of Homeworld, so she may be too busy.  But even that seems like a thin excuse.

As I discuss below, I believe it’s entirely possible that Rose DID poof Pink, just as the “official story” suggests, and then did something with her Gem.  Exactly WHAT she did, we can only guess.  I wonder whether White would even entertain a meeting with a rebellious Quartz soldier...?

I, too, am annoyed that there still is no change to the opener. I’m not asking for having Peridot and Lapis right there with the CGs at the end, but can they at least be in the opener? Also, where the hell were they throughout this whole arc? We know Lapis would have likely flown to Homeworld herself to rescue Steven, despite everyone else insisting its a bad idea, and Peridot likely has a strong enough attachment to Steven that she’d be riding on Lapis’ back the whole flight, likely swinging a garden rake or something…now that I say that I want to actually see that…

You’d think they’d be able to work the Barn Gems (and Pumpkin!) into the opening somehow. 😅

I’d love to know why they didn’t shown up.  It’s possible, I suppose, that they are at the ship that the CGs were trying to fix (presumably, either the one from “Friend Ship” or from “Monster Reunion”).  And Lapis would be there, if only so Peridot and the others can keep an eye on her and prevent her from doing exactly that.  (And that does make an amusing image...)

Anyway! I was also a little disappointed that Aquamarine and Topaz just kind of…disappeared. They were both really great characters, and while I’m happy we got to see all these new gems it kinda felt like: “Here’s a gem! Poof! Here’s a gem! Poof! Here’s some more gems! Poof!” Like, I’m sure we’ll see maybe Topaz again, but the question of when is the problem. As much as I love this show, it does kind of have a bit of a pacing issue.

I think that we’ll see them again, even Aquamarine.  After all, this show has a habit of characters coming back when we least expect it (Jasper, Eyeball, etc.).  But yeah, it does seem like they were gone in an eye blink.

And Zircon was also great! (Although I’m not too hopeful that we’ll see Blue Zircon again.) And you’re right about Amy Sedaris! I had to look her up on IMDb because her voice sounded really familiar. She’s a well known comedian and actress. I best know her as Princess Caroline in Bojack Horseman, but she’s done a lot of voice work and acting in other shows, too.

Yeah, the Blue Zircon may... disappear. 😞  I must have seen Amy Sedaris on Comedy Central at some point and forgotten about it.  *shrugs*

I also feel like I can write an essay on “the Trial”. I might do a long post, or something, just not here. All I can say is I really want to see more of the Diamonds, if anything because their relationship is so fascinating. And I will say Blue Zircon had a point: it is highly suspicious that Rose was able to get that close to Pink Diamond. I know a lot of people are speculating based off Yellow’s reactions that she knows something about this, but… I’m not too sure. I do, however, think Blue Diamond doesn’t know anything, and there might even be the possibility of her turning against whichever Diamond who did do it if she finds out. I don’t know, but Blue really does seem torn up about Pink’s death - there were a lot of actions and facial expressions from her that make me believe she wasn’t faking it. But Yellow: she really seemed to want to speed things along once Blue Zircon started talking. Also, and even more suspiciously, there was the (possibly convenient) absence of White Diamond. So, there’s that too.

I’d like to see more of the Diamonds, too, in maybe a less threatening situation.

I was chatting with @raksha-the-demon about the whole Pink Diamond thing.  Logically, there can be only a few possibilities:

Pink was shattered, and Rose was personally responsible.  Based on what’s come to light (the sword detail making no sense, and Blue Zircon’s testimony), I think this possibility can be ruled out.

Pink was shattered.  Rose is either partly responsible, or the Diamonds framed her, and she felt guilty anyway.  Since Blue, as you point out, doesn’t seem to know the truth (and seems to be sticking with the “official” story), it seems more likely that either Yellow, or the unseen AND unmentioned White, are responsible, and made Rose the scapegoat since she was the leader of the rebellion.

Pink was NOT shattered, and Rose has something to do with her disappearance.  This is entirely speculative, but it’s worth mentioning anyway.  Lion may not be Pink Diamond in disguise, but there’s at least one thing about Lion that we STILL don’t know: the contents of the treasure chest in the pocket dimension.  Think about it: Rose could indeed have attacked Pink Diamond, as the story says, poofed her, but taken her Gem and sealed it away.  And if that’s not the most plausible loony theory regarding this mystery, I don’t know what is.

And then there were “Off Colours” and “Lars’ Head”. After seeing what happened to Lars it was like that scene in A New Hope when Alderaan was destroyed: “I felt a great disturbance in the Fandom, as if millions of headcanons suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.” Welp, it turns out Lion isn’t Pink Diamond in disguise, eh, guys? Guys? Ah, they’ll be ok. This has given them a whole bunch more theories to start flinging around. I will say, though, I am very happy with Lars’ character development. The only thing that concerns me now though is what will happen with him and Sadie once (not if, come on guys) he gets back. It’s sort of been confirmed that he’s now a near immortal pink zombie, and Sadie is…not. This is going to hurt.

Oh... yeah.  That’s for bringing that up.  I am happy that Lars got some character development, but...  Poor Sadie. 😢

I might have also complained about the introduction to all these new gems only to immediately cut them out again (not permanently, I really do believe they’ll be back), but I gotta say, I love them all. I’m also really interested in how they will be received back on Earth, if anything because we have at least one pair now with Padparadscha and Sapphire being both, well, sapphires. It also looked like Rhodonite might be a fusion of a pearl and a ruby, which would make two more pairs. And we don’t really know who forms Fluorite, so there might be more there, too.

It sure seems like the fandom has accepted that Rhodonite = Pearl + Ruby (from the shape of their Gems, if nothing else).  And I really like Fluorite; she’s like a wise old grandmother.  (Think about it: she’s a permafusion of six Gems.  Compare with Alexandrite, who besides having only four Gems total, is rather unstable because of Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst’s personalities.)

(I’m also a little curious, too, if different gems fusing together would make different forms of the same fusion gem, like if another jasper and another lapis would create the same form as the Malachite we know, or if the same combo of gems that make Fluorite would form another fluorite that looks identical. We’ve only ever seen fusions formed by the same gems, but since fusion is a metaphor for a relationship would two different gems who have a different relationship make the same fusion?)

That is... a fascinating thought.  Since we’ve seen so few other Gem fusions containing one of the same type as one of “our” Gems, it’s hard to say.  Rhodonite definitely has a bit of resemblance to Garnet, probably from the Ruby.  But if another Ruby fused with another Sapphire, would they be just like Garnet?  Probably not, but there is definitely room for much speculation.

Wow, this got long. I think I’ll call it here and maybe make my own post about the rest. This show is great, I will say. But my god can they please just give us one episode that answers shit without killing off a bunch of good theories while simultaneously bringing in a bunch of totally new questions?

I don’t think that will happen until the show ends. 😂  May that day be far off!

I like little glimpses at what they’re like living together, little pictures of moments from the mornings or lazy days around the house, those sort of “wrap your arms around them from behind while they’re doing dishes” and fluffy-garbage-shit, but the bulk of that I prefer to cover in headcanons and banter with my partners, as it’s not usually super interesting to thread. One-liners and short stuff here and there is all good, but I prefer to dig into the meaty bits when we’re really writin’.

Stuff like big disagreements, traumatic episodes, the angsty, holy shit why would you kinda thing, as well as them really doing stuff together. Mari’s a world-traveling criminal with an adrenaline addiction, so I think she really shines with people who get into trouble with her, and there’s a lot of relationship to be explored in there.

Also, basically as soon as a ship is confirmed between her and someone else’s muse, there’s almost inevitably a night where me and the other mun end up throwing down for a few hours and end up explaining, plotting, and talking about their entire relationship so it goes from 0 to 100 real quick, even if they’re still practically strangers in our official threads. Oops, all berries.

HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE?: 

Yeah I’m gonna go with the easy, good shit and say no minors-- this obviously has it’s exception in the handful of aus & verses where Mari is, herself, a teenager, but in that case there’d be no chance of her usual shit. Kinda, yeah, but the reason I like it so much is more about seeing what we can find out about/build more in our muses and their characters than it is about aw look at them they’re so cute they should smooch and be happy. I like building relationships that are interesting because I like doing interesting things with my daughters. ARE YOU MULTISHIP?: 

Yyyyyyeeeesss, but as I’ve specified before, in a weirder way than most people. Until a relationship reaches REAL levels of PRETTY EXTREME COMMITMENT, all of Mari’s “relationships”/flirtations/FWB arrangements-- all of those exist in her “canon”. Like, she might be chillin’ with you one night, and then skip over to another muses’ pad the next day. And it’s totally available for your muse to know that and comment on it/know about the other people she’s seeing. She’s not exactly secretive.

When she does get particularly ROMANTICALLY involved with someone, that moves into it’s own verse, with exception for some special plots (which would be discussed beforehand). As mentioned in this post, Mari will try to be faithful in her important romantic relationships... it just might not... work out... anyways.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SHIP IN YOUR CURRENT FANDOM?: 

Mari & Emi. Oh my god they’re so good. I love them. My rival, shitty, bad decision daughters. (I’m mostly fandomless, so, I’m referencing a ship with one of my other OCs. It’s my fandom, get it.).

FINALLY, HOW DOES ONE SHIP WITH YOU?: 

After we’ve touched our toes in some threads and started getting a little conversation going between our kids, if you feel somethin’s there and you wanna talk about it, hit me up. Literally just drop me a line in ims and tell me what you’re thinkin’, and we’ll see about going from there. I can’t guarantee I’ll love it right away, (but, y’know, I probably will), but I’m willing to throw ideas around and try something out. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work.
