Coolio! So, to start;
I'm not 100% on how Twitter works, but I'm fairly sure it's on algorithm? Tumblr is not an algorithm (or at least, it's not supposed to be, unlike what current R&D heads seem to think,) it's a blogging website! The way you tagged your Sunny post was perfect; the people who want to see it will see it, and those who don't, won't. Cross posting (I.e., tagging it as #spiderman or even #Fluttershy) will just get you blocked, so it's not a good thing to do! (It's also against site TOS)
You've got your likes and follows visible to other people; most have it hidden! It's up to you, but people won't be weird about you hiding it; it's none of their business anyway!
Play around with your dashboard settings! You're new, so it's possible tumblr has defaulted your dashboard to the Trending page or something similar; this isn't how tumblr is supposed to work. Try turning off 'Best Stuff First' and 'Based on your likes' too.
How Tumblr is supposed to work is you're supposed to follow people you like the look of, and engage with their stuff. Try following some more of the people you've encountered (it'll both help you find them again, and bring stuff onto your dashboard) and also try reblogging some things!
Reblogging is NOT the same as reposting; reblogging (the two arrows button, next to like) creates a copy of the post that still leads to all the other people, and OP (original poster), while reposting (downloading someone else's art and making your own post with it) is not a positively-viewed thing here, and will just get you blocked when people figure it out. Re-uploading your OWN art is okay, but if you make the same post too many times you'll probably just get marked as spam.
Reblogs don't end up in searches, so tags on those are less for exposure and more for maintenance. You don't have to tag (I don't tag anything!) but you could do it as a filing system (I.e. so searching #mlp g5 comes up with every post you've tagged #mlp g5) or to talk to the people you reblogged from! People can see your tags, so if you want to make friends, try talking about what you've just reblogged.
Make liberal use of the Block button; Tumblr is supposed to be curated by you, for you, so if there's people whose stuff you don't like, just block them and move on! Even if they're just a little annoying, blocking people creates a much nicer environment.
If you're going to tag as a warning for something (I.e. flashing lights on a gif) make sure you use the actual, basic word instead of something censored or otherwise altered. For example, #flashing would be filtered by them, but #fl4shing would not be, and is therefore useless to the person filtering for it. (Also note, tagging a post with flashing lights as, for example, #epilepsy is actively harmful, as that's a community tag and would put that post into the tag epileptics use for themselves.)
As another note off the previous one, this is not tiktok and you are allowed to swear and say the word die here. Please use real words and not the fake words people use to get past censors.
As another another note, the exception of this is posting hate/criticism. Because of how tumblr works, a post that says the word (I.e. Fluttershy) will appear in the Fluttershy tag even if you don't tag it as Fluttershy; if you want to post about how much you hate Fluttershy, use something like Flutt/ershy so Tumblr doesn't recognise the word and put it in the tag. Nobody wants to see hate of their favourite character!
Don't be afraid to turn asks off, if people are being rude; you don't owe them shit.
Don't send hate to people; this site is hostile in places enough as it is. Just block and move on.
If you get an empty blog following you, with either the default pfp or a photo of a woman as their pfp, that's a bot; block them and report them as spam. Same goes for a follower that just has (human) porn on their blog.
These were my main points; if you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out! We're getting a lot of Reddit and Twitter refugees at the moment, so people are used to it! Hope I helped!
Hi! I saw your Sunny art in the tag (love it, by the way!), saw you were new, and wondered if you wanted a crash course on how Tumblr works? It's just a lot different from Twitter, and some people have liked the help ^-^
Yeah, I would like to have a course...I am confused

TUMBLR GUIDE
lately i saw that many blogs are being asked about basic things of how to use tumblr so i decided to make a mini guide with super basic things to start using the website :)
tags: how to use tumblr & my tutorials
above in your profile you will be able to see:

your url (handle) – [your@].tumblr.com
by clicking it you will see all your side blogs or, if you don't have yet, you'll be able to create them. side blogs are secondary blogs to your main blog, you cannot follow nor like from that blog, but you can dm and comment from there. you'll have different followers, drafts, etc.
a loupe
search function of your own blog, for posts and followings.
blaze feature
this feature helps you to promote your posts (you need to pay). for boosting your stuff.
a color palette
which is used to edit the basic appearance of your blog. you can change your photo and its shape, your header, the background or button colors, the color and font of your name, etc. to have advanced editing options you need to access from web.
note: please change your url, icon & title as soon as you start interacting/following other blogs - when someone follows you, you're only able to preview their icon & title, and if they a default url with a default icon and default title, you're probably getting blocked because everyone assumes you're a bot! change it to literally every else but the default it doesn't matter, just don't look like a bot!!!!
share options
to share your lovely blog :D
a nut
by clicking it, you will access general settings of your account, there you'll see:
account settings - general settings
where you can customize notifications, messages, responses, switch to dark mode, etc.
blog settings for your main/side blog
you will be able to see your followers (only you can see them), your drafts, your queue, you can enable your inbox and you can see your messages, you can hide your likes and your following, etc. in "visibility" you will be able to hide the blog, either from searches, recommendations, external searching, etc.

below in your profile, you will be able to see:

a home (dashboard)
your timeline, the posts of the people and the hashtags you follow. by default it will include the "based on your likes" posts, but you can turn that off on general settings - dashboard.
a loupe
general tumblr search engine. you can search for blogs, hastags, posts, etc. there are more advanced search options on the web, here you can read more.
symbol of three users (communities)
communities are a feature where only members of a community (either public or private) can post on it. i have one :b
a chat bubble with a happy face (notifications)
you will see all the activity of your blog and the private messages that people send to you.
symbol of a user (your profile)
on the right, a pencil inside a blue circle
to make a post.

you can put text, links (100 per post) gifs&photos (30 per post), a video (one per post) and audios!
by pressing on (Aa) you can change the font and when selecting a word you can change its color, thickness, inclination, size, you can add a link so that when you touch the word it takes you to a link, etc.
by touching the three dots at the top right you can save that post as a draft, queue it, schedule it, save it privately, etc.
if you like someone else's post, you can reblog it to share it on your blog (it's similar as retweeting on twitter, but here if the op deactivates, the post won't be deleted).
TAG SYSTEM
tags are used to organize your blog to find information easier and help your posts reach more people.
for example, if i tag "#one direction" in all my posts related to larry, a tag will be created on my blog called "one direction" with all the posts where i used that tag.
as we already know, we can add a link in a word so that it takes us to another post, web page, etc. but we can also create a link so that when it's clicked it - it takes us to one of our tags.
you have to copy the url of your blog, add /tagged/ to it and then put the name of the tag you want. (spaces are %20)
my url is anchorandrope.tumblr.com so if i want to create a link that takes me to the "one direction " tag of my blog, that one will be anchorandrope.tumblr.com/tagged/one%20direction
TUMBLR FROM DESKTOP (WEB)
the general operation is similar, but on the web from a pc you have many more functions.
edit the blog theme with html, see your notifications better and with statistics, mass post editor, be able to unhide "violent/sensitive" content, see the amount of likes you gave, you can search in your followers, etc.
like i said at the beginning, this is just the very basics. tumblr is intuitive to use, touch buttons until you find out what they do lol. and if you want to know better how to use it or know something specific: look at this, search in my "how to use tumblr" tag and/or ask me!!! <3
