I will admit I used to ship them together but I was like, what, 8 or 9 when hands of time came out and I didn't think about the fact that Machia was a woman made up of snakes so I just saw her and said "oh wow cool," yet that was YEARS AGO I have CHANGED I no longer SHIP THEM and probably won't because Machia is literally with me!!!

Athena and Tamarack love each other so dearly. None of them have confessed it yet but it's the way they follow each other in their shenanigans, it's the way they comfort each other when they feel sad, it's the way they praise each other for their respective efforts, it's the way they trust each other, it's the way they're always there for each other, it's the way they smile at each other, it's the way they look at each other, it's the way they care about each other... It's the way all of that say silently yet loudly "I love you".

And yet none of them seem to realize the other feel the same way and this for 8 long years. Tamarack sometimes thinks that maybe, just maybe there's a chance. Athena's self-worth is too low to even dare thinking there's a chance for her.

kind of long lance/nights fic i found from a long time ago and decided to finish— it’s not canon lance but the lance that balan becomes

Balan had been used to NiGHTS’ coming and going from the theater. 

The two of them had found it was what worked best, what with Balan’s nearly-nonstop work schedule and NiGHTS’ innate wanderer nature— he didn’t want them feeling bored all day, waiting for the off chance he would come across some free time to spend with them, and NiGHTS had made it clear early on that while they loved Wonderworld, the Night Dimension would always be home to them. And Balan had allowed it, of course he had, and, truthfully, he was too busy to notice even once several days had passed without the two of them meeting. NiGHTS was always in and out of his life, crossing between his world and their own as simply as if they were crossing streets. 

For Lance, though, things were different. Lance had time now, and far too much of it. it had been easy to distract himself at first— merely becoming Lance had been a process that took up most of his time once it was underway. The worst changes were the fastest ones, painful to the point he was often unconscious for days at a time while his energy went towards growing new skin and claws and those tendrils— their creation had been the worst by far. NiGHTS had been spared those gory details, only witnessing the slower changes that etched away at his heart more than anything else: the way his hair had grown out past his shoulders, darkening from seafoam to inky purple and Negati-striped; how his voice became softer, worn-out, lacking its usual energy and volume. How all of Wonderworld gradually drew away from him, costumes and Tims and inhabitants alike.

NiGHTS had noticed, of course, but hadn’t minded. They had twisted his first silver strands of hair around their fingers and laughed— “You’re getting old, aren’t you?”

And he remembered the way NiGHTS had looked at him when they had finally seen Lance in his entirety— not his Lance, not the same Lance whose picture graced the photo frames on his office’s desk or whose elegant image was painted in the grand portrait in the theater’s lobby, but the Lance who had been lain on the floor of the kitchenette, too pain-stricken to move or even speak beneath a crumpled head of tendrils. NiGHTS had flinched. They had cowered. Then thought it was a joke, some sort of transformation power that Balan had never told them about. Stepped backwards and said “I know it’s you, now turn back,” with a nervous laugh. 

Once he had finally come to his senses, explaining what had happened as best as he understood it, they had asked “why didn’t you tell me,” and he still couldn’t answer.

NiGHTS had stayed, though, adjusted around his changes and he hated how often he wondered if it would be better if they had just left. But they had stayed, made themself used to Lance instead of Balan, the new ways he looked and sounded and acted. They had stayed until Lance finally gathered the strength to create Wonderworld’s new maestro, and the balance had been restored at last, and then, perched on the railing of the balcony outside Lance’s room, they had pressed their forehead to his for a brief second, and simply told him “I’ll be seeing you, then,” before taking off. 

Lance could easily fill most of the days he spent alone, catching up on all the things his role as Balan had previously left little time for; reading, cleaning, sleeping. Too often he imagined simply hibernating the lengths between NiGHTS’ leaving and their next arrival. He had nearly done that today, but he could just feel that they would be home soon, and though he had woken up late, still alone, he had busied himself with preparing things for their arrival; washed some clothes so that they would have something clean to change into after their journey, made their bed neat and comfortable, cooked dinner in advance, and then ate his portion alone once evening set and NiGHTS was still absent.

That was normal. It couldn’t have been an easy feat, travelling across separate worlds in a timely manner. NiGHTS tried their best, flew their fastest, knowing Lance was always anxious to see them return— and they always did, he reminded himself of it like a mantra, that they would return each time they left, that it was only a matter of hours until they would be home again, making a spectacular landing on the same balcony railing they always took off from.

But they would leave for weeks at a time now, and it made his mind wander to the worst places: what if something had happened to them in Nightmare, what if they had simply chosen to break things off without telling him? It would be incredibly easy to do so— they knew the boundary between their two worlds was only able to be crossed by themself, even as Lance, he was still a maestro in some form, still bound to Wonderworld. If NiGHTS wanted to leave, there was next to nothing he could do to stop them, though he told himself that if it came to be, he wouldn’t let himself stop them from leaving, either, no matter how his heart ached for them to stay there in the theater forever. He had been selfish enough in the past.

Or maybe they had found someone, over the course of their travels, who they preferred— he was so different from the one NiGHTS had fallen for in the first place, after all; quiet and sullen, more easily stirred to emotion. Admittedly, there was little they had in common these days, 

A series of quick, sharp pains running down his spine broke Lance from his sulking— the now-familiar feeling of his tendrils reappearing, while not nearly as painful as the first time, was a telltale sign that his mood was quickly souring. He had held together well enough, he supposed, remaining in his positive form until nightfall, wanting NiGHTS to come home to something at least slightly more familiar. He was still unable to control his form, the two of them had seen his positive form only sparingly since he’d changed.

The tendrils, squirming impatiently, demanded more space than the chair he’d been seated in could provide. Time to wait outside, then.

It was a scene right out of theatre: a cool night and a starry sky, a moonlit balcony, a lone figure anticipating the arrival of their lover. Lance only wished he enjoyed it more, that time would move faster.

At last, something bright caught his eyes— there they were, a comet, a bright flash of red followed by a spinning, glittering trail of silver across the dark sky. In seconds they landed before him, dipping effortlessly into a graceful bow upon the railing, though their wide, endearingly sharp-toothed grin betrayed their elegant image.

“I hope you haven’t been up waiting too long, Lancie, I— woah!”

The hugging was unexpected, perhaps a bit too tight, but NiGHTS settled into his embrace easily, brushing back the beginnings of silver strands of hair. Behind him, the tendrils lowered themselves to the ground, becoming still, the way the always did when his positivity began to return.

So as a huge Kyle enjoyer there's certain things about this pairing that makes me feel like it's really unfair for him and honestly just bad for his health ngl. I could go on a whole spiel but I won't, this ain't about him.... specifically lol

But on the other hand...they ARE friends. I know it's kinda hard to swallow this truth but they CAN also be calm and peaceful together it is just rare....so idk. And I guess people enjoy the way they gravitate towards each other...whether that be for better or for worse. I think for me it depends on how it's being portrayed in the fan content. I don't ever seek it out myself but sometimes I come across stuff that I find cute or whatever. It's not my cup of tea though

Anyway I don't ship it myself and if I think about it too much I get upset lmfao but otherwise it's honestly not the woooorst ship I think u have to worry more about the way a person ships it (but honestly that can apply to basically everything). I truly understand avoiding it though, I have mostly negative feelings for it myself and truthfully I personally prefer them both with other people.
