I love crossovers like this, especially when I'm at most only passingly familiar with one or both fandoms. I know Psych but idk Phoenix Wright much except for the musical by Random encounters and a bit of cultural osmosis, but I can tell you that Gus would TRY to be the voice of reason but end up getting dragged along by Shawn (as always), but then once he gets into it he will commit to the bit as best he can. Results vary based on how much time he has to prepare - or actually, I just realized, it's somewhat random. Psych plays out like a D&D game with wacky critical successes and failures, yet everything gets resolved by the end of the episode of course. Sometimes that's because of hard work, persistence, and a critical success at the right moment – and other times it's more like they had to be gently nudged into the plot by "luck" (aka the author's hand).
I can also say for certain that I would love to see any characters from ANY American detective show interact with the bullshit justice system in Ace Attorney - which is in and of itself a critique of Japan's bullshit irl justice system (and apparently death note is also a critique, albeit in a much darker tone)! The set up can be as simple as, Shawn and Gus go to Japan for vacation (likely Shawn is forcing Gus to take a break, maybe they're also forcing Lassie to take a break too, he could use it). They wander in to the wrong place at the wrong time and one of them is suspected for murder (again, I vote Lassie, because it's hilarious to torture him, "You see what happens! You drag me away from work and get me arrested! This is why I never go anywhere with you two!"). Wright takes the case and shenanigans are afoot. Must include:
a generous helping of "wtf, this is not how any sane court works, what is this?!"
An "oh my god, there's two of them moment (referring to Shawn and Wright)
Maybe one of Lasseter and Edgeworth too...
Gus stumbling into what would a key piece of evidence and being so proud! ...except (insert evidence being invalid, destroyed, or used against them)
Parallels drawn between Shawn's 'psychic' abilities and Maya's spirit channeling possibly an excited questioning/interrogation by Maya "Oh, you spirit channel too!" *Shawn's improv abilities activate* "...Yeeeeessss"
A suitability dramatic yet dumb reveal at the end led by our two drama queen main characters working together
A pineapple.
The thing about crossovers that they don’t tell you about is that you can crossover anything
Phoenix Wright goes in to work and finds himself defending Shawn Spencer
Will Graham full on meets Count Dracula and Hannibal and Chilton rush to insert themselves into the situation to disastrous results
The Mystery Gang meet Saiki K and he’s losing his mind trying to figure out why everyone’s just completely accepting of this talking dog
And so on
