Commencement / Britechester (1)

Shalom crushed it – Dean’s list, a screenwriter’s fellowship, her card to the Film Union and a coveted spot on Decha’s firm crew. Her parents Bruce & Ester aren’t sure how they got such smart kids, but they’re thrilled. And Bubbe Ida couldn’t be more proud.
Big bro Micah and sis-in-law Alma delighted in their little sisters’ successes too 🖤✨
✏️ Yup - they tried it again. They figured they would have Noa put her cap and gown on again so they could get a twofer, but of course - chaos ensued once more. We’re all just going to accept this is their thing.

While Chatri initially planned on using her linguistics degree for an ambassador job like her mom Pania, Vanessa dreamer has convinced her to take on a job at Dreamland as a liaison. Truth is, Chatri loves fashion; she’s learned a lot about the business during her internship, and has discovered her skill set is intensely flexible. An added plus? Shalom will be working in Delso Valley most of the time with her Pop Decha anyway - she gets the best for both worlds; seeing her family regularly and getting to be with her girl.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bristol has a lot on her plate - so much so, that her fiancé Maddie told her it was completely fine to postpone the wedding until say, Fall? While, she appreciates his support, in all honesty she just wants to put her old life behind her.
✏️ A little refresher/backstory: after The MCCC Incident ™️ (an event that ravaged this save where marriages were destroyed, and babies were born out of thin air), Bristol’s parents divorced, married, random townies, and started new families. to make matters worse, they loathe each other and refuse to even be in the same room. Luckily for Bristol, she’s had her best friend Saanvi and the rest of the Rasoyas to fill the emptiness.
That aside, she has her work – fortunately she’s able to work remotely, so she can travel with her soon to be husband while he searches the worlds for new textiles and inspiration.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sophia has most of her career plan mapped out; she’ll be working with her father Bjorn - not on the design side, but more managing relationships with collaborators as well as being the liaison between her father and his clients (wonderful for him, because he’s not very social).
Now that Chaachee Siya is back to care for little Birgit, her mother Clara can get back into the thick of running her catering business. Her sister Elsa will be out of the house at university, but it will still take some adjusting now that she and her boyfriend Thor will be moving back to the Crumbling Isle.

Little Dove
day 3 entry for @comfy-vember !
day 3: Special breakfast — Spoon feeding — Forehead kiss
summary: Detective Oscar Montgomery gets to see his newborn daughter, Sophia Montgomery.
She had been so small, so, so small. Oscar felt a swell in his heart when he was handed Sophia, finding himself for the first time shaking. He never held someone so tiny before, it was like the air had been taken from his lungs when he set his eyes on the infant. She cooed and squirmed, bundled up in the baby pink blanket she’d been wrapped in. God, she was just so little, how was she so little?
Sophia let out a tiny little sigh, seemingly feeling at ease when she was in her father’s arms. Oscar swore he might start sobbing in the hospital room with Diana and the nurses in front of him. It was a warm spring that afternoon, the middle of March, when Oscar got the phone call when he was at the agency, all of the coworkers had perked their heads up much like concerned hounds when Oscar let out a shout and hopped out of chair. Elias and Charlie looked at each other, Elias furrowing his brow and Charlie hoping for the best.
“You mean it? You really mean it?! It’s–” Oscar ran his fingers through his hair, “it’s a girl? Really, truly? It’s a girl?! Well, yeah, yeah I’ll be over there right away!!”
Elias and Charlie both made their way over to the elated new father, Elias speaking up first, “Is Dee okay, Oz? Are you okay?”
Elias yelped when Oscar grabbed him by the shoulders, shaking him, “I’m a father, Eli, I'm a father!”
And before Charlie could speak, Oscar grabbed him as well, “and you’re an uncle, Ceecee, an uncle!!”
And here Oscar stood, cradling his own little girl, his own little sunshine. His little dove. She blinked, opening her eyes and looking up at her father, she looked exactly like her Diana (save for the eyes, my, she got that from him). He caressed her little face with his finger, and swore he was on cloud nine when she wrapped her tiny finger around his, eyes glistening with tears. He choked, trying to let out a watery chuckle.
“Hey there sweetie,” he whispered, “hey, hey there. Welcome, welcome.”
 She cooed, Oscar only smiled.
“Your momma and I are very happy you’re here, did you know that?” Oscar said, “we’re so, so happy. We waited for so long, and you’re finally here.”
Oscar hadn’t realized a nurse had walked up to him, smiling softly with her hands folded in front, “have you thought of a name, sir?”
Oscar froze, a name? A name. God, he and Diana had spent nine months trying to figure out a name, he debated on giving her a German or Irish name like Charlotte or Ida or Bridget Nora, if she had been a boy maybe Klaus or Anton or Declan or Finn. Diana had offered him Spanish names like Emilia, Maria, Ana, or Isabella if she were a girl, or Miguel, Caesar, Florian (after her father), or David if he were a boy. Neither names seemed fitting, Oscar had been more stressed about names the most over the course of those nine months that they hadn’t come up with anything.
 Until now of course.
“Sophia.” Diana blurted out, she was laying in the hospital bed, Oscar could tell she was exhausted, her voice weary and raspy Oscar could barely hear her, her usually well-groomed locks of raven hair now a mess and sprawled on the pillows. But despite all that, she smiled. Wiping the sweat from her brow, giving him notably a tender grin. “Her name is Sophia Jane Montgomery.”
Sophia, Oscar thought to himself, Sophia, what a wonderful name.
“Sophia…” Oscar mumbled, “did you hear that, Sophia? That’s your name.”
Sophia had already been asleep, Oscar’s eyes started to water again, “Sophie… our little Sophie.”
Oscar held her up and planted a kiss on her forehead. Their little Sophie, their own little sunshine. Their own little dove.

Stay Golden Sunday: Brother, Can You Spare That Jacket?
The Girls find a winning lottery ticket, only to lose it in a donated jacket. Their quest to find it leads them to a homeless shelter.
Tumblr media
Picture It . . .
Dorothy catches Sophia reading a letter addressed to Rose (from a friend Sophia thinks is a lesbian). Rose arrives with their weekly lottery scratch-off tickets. Blanche follows shortly after with shopping bags, saying she was in the mood for leather, but Sophia cuts her off so they can scratch their tickets. Dorothy says she got three palm trees -- which means her ticket is worth $10,000. The Girls immediately begin celebrating.
SOPHIA: Where's everybody going? DOROTHY: Out to dinner. Go get ready, Ma. SOPHIA: I am ready! I'm always ready! You do that at 82. That, and carry hard candy.
As Sophia leaves to go order herself some swag, Blanche excitedly shows off her new purchase: A distressed aviator jacket. She sticks the winning ticket in the jacket pocket for safekeeping, and the three Girls decide to go for dinner. Blanche leaves the jacket on the couch as they go to freshen up. Sophia returns and answers a knock at the door: It's a man from the thrift shop there to pick up donations. Sophia, spotting the rather shabby jacket, tosses it onto the pile.
Later, the Girls are panicked, looking for the jacket. Sophia finally spills that she donated the jacket, which is when they inform her that they put the lottery ticket in the pocket. They make it to the thrift shop, where the proprietor informs him he just put the jacket out. That's when a bodyguard picks up the jacket and says "Michael" has decided to buy it. Blanche tries to get the jacket back, but the bodyguard isn't having it. He tosses the jacket out the door to "Michael," who catches with a glittery-gloved hand.
youtube
The next day, the Girls mope at home -- they tried calling the lottery commission, but they can't claim the $10k without the ticket. Rose then spots an item in the paper: There's a celebrity auction to benefit the homeless, with one of the objects being a leather jacket worn by "a major rock star." They immediately book it to the event. They make it just in time as the jacket is brought out. They open their mouths, but a nearby man bids $10,000 immediately, and they can't beat it.
They're prepared to bamboozle the buyer to just get the ticket out of the jacket pocket, when he announces he's a congressman who's been accused of not caring about the homeless. And, in addition to the cash donation, he's dispatched an aide to give the jacket to a homeless shelter as a symbolic gesture. Later that night, the Girls manage to find the shelter and a priest greets them. He offers to let them stay the night, and they agree to look for the jacket once inside.
ROSE: Are you sure we're in the right place? DOROTHY: Mission Street Shelter for the Indigent and Homeless. This is where they said they sent the jacket. BLANCHE: Kinda drab, isn't it? DOROTHY: Blanche, it's a shelter, not the flagship of the Hilton chain. SOPHIA: Kinda reminds me of the Shady Pines Retirement Home, except here the lights in the exit sign work.
They enter with their pillows and find beds to hunker down until everyone is asleep. Rose gets into a conversation with her neighbor, Ben, a hotelier who's also from Minnesota. Blanche's neighbor, on the other hand, is a young man who offers to help her through her first night. Sophia and Dorothy, who are sharing a bed, spot a woman named Ida Perkins -- Sophia is shocked and wonders what her old friend is doing in a homeless shelter. Rose and Ben continue to chit-chat about their past in Minnesota.
The young man, Kenny, tells Blanche about the procedure for breakfast, and notes she seems out of place in the shelter. He says he's there undercover working on his doctorate in sociology. Blanche is ecstatic, as Kenny reminds her of her son -- until he confesses it's a lie, and he's an alcoholic. At Ida's bed, she and Sophia share memories with Dorothy. Ida left Shady Pines a year previously. Dorothy asks why she left, and Ida says she simply didn't have enough money.
KENNY: This is your first time? BLANCHE: Oh lord, it's been ages since I heard that from a man. Yes, it is my first time. KENNY: I can give you a few pointers if you like. BLANCHE: Now that I've never heard from a man.
Ben tells Rose that he was laid off and couldn't find work in Minnesota. He eventually hitchhiked to Miami, and he offers to listen to Rose's story at breakfast, bidding her goodnight. Kenny tells Blanche he cracked under pressure from his family and warns her to keep herself safe. Ida says she was evicted from Shady Pines with little assistance despite her pleas for it, and she has no living family.
Blanche, Rose, and Dorothy meet up after everyone else is asleep and agree to separate and look for the jacket among the beds. They very quietly sneak between the beds as Judy Collins' cover of "Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?" plays in the background. Sophia stays with Ida, and tells her there is genuine love and compassion out there. The other Girls meet again, with Blanche quietly holding out the ticket. The priest returns to open the shelter for the day. All four Girls exchange looks, and Sophia hands the priest the ticket, thanking him for everything.
"Persuasion, hell. This isn't for dinner at the Rainbow Room. This is for ten big ones! Give him whatever he wants!"
As far as Very Special Episodes go, this might be simultaneously one of Golden Girls most and least subtle episodes ever, in that it's not an obvious VSE until the final scene, but man does it make the most of that final scene. Most of the episode is devoted to the Girls attempting to get back their winning lottery ticket, only to be confronted with the reality of their already-existing good fortune at the homeless shelter in third act. It's not a particularly well-plotted episode, but it's hard to deny the hammer-blunt impact of hearing and seeing the people in the homeless shelter and their variety of stories.
ROSE: I have a really dumb question. SOPHIA: And I have a box of Chiclets. What's your point?
The first part of the episode shows the Girls winning the $10k jackpot on their scratch-offs -- not a life-changing amount of money, maybe, but still a very good amount for four older women to spend on luxury purchases. They all immediately begin fantasizing about what they're going to spend it on, only for Sophia to accidentally give the ticket away after Blanche puts it in her jacket pocket. I know Sophia's technically in the wrong for giving away Blanche's property, but frankly I think the other Girls bear a lot of the blame. If I had a winning lottery ticket, I would not let it out of my sight, much less leave it in the pocket of a jacket on the sofa.
The Girls proceed to go on the mother of all quests to find the jacket, going from a charity clothes store to a ritzy auction to a homeless shelter. Throughout the whole episode, they're laser-focused on their goal of getting their object of good fortune back, ignoring every sign around them pushing them in the direction of charity. From a major pop star wearing a thrifted jacket during a concert to later auction off to charity, to a congressman donating everything including the jacket to a shelter, to the priest who finds them beds to stay in at a late hour.
youtube
Then they lay down and come face-to-face with the . . . well, faces of the homeless around them, and they can no longer ignore the plight of the less fortunate as they have been the whole episode. At least, that's the point of the episode. I'm not going to pretend it's perfectly plotted -- after all, these are still the Golden Girls, and you're going to root for them to win even if they're being a little bit greedy. But as build-up to that all-important musical number, I think it's well-done. (Also, one hopes the priest would actually be able to redeem the lottery ticket, but wouldn't that constitute gambling?)
And to be honest, I'm more inclined than I've ever been to be lenient with this episode. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, the number of people who are homeless or don't have stable housing has increased dramatically in recent years, particularly during the pandemic years. Social issues rise and fall in importance, but at this moment in time, "Brother Can You Spare That Jacket" is perhaps even more relevant now than it was when it aired.
CONGRESSMAN: Would you mind if I said a few words to the audience? SOPHIA: For ten grand, they should let him shower with the audience.
This is especially true because the people that the Girls meet in the shelter are personable (in the case of Ben), well-educated (in the case of Kevin), and elderly (in the case of Ida); I can't say for sure if these portrayals punctured stereotypes that people in the early 90s would have had about the homeless -- but it probably says something they defy stereotypes that exist now. It's a rather chilling portrayal of different social groups for whom there is no safety net, and the show delivers it in a way that's palatable for sitcom audiences.
Still, that's not to say the episode is perfect. For starters, the episode portrays all of the Girls as rather avaricious, but later episodes will show that they -- or at least Rose -- are closer to poverty than wealth. This is something that's only disingenuous in hindsight, but perhaps her having an extra $2,500 in her bank account, even if her new friend Ben doesn't, wouldn't be the end of the world. They also tackle age discrimination in the job market, the effects of which Ben represents, more comprehensively in the next season.
BLANCHE: Here, I'll tell you what our plan is. Now, there's $10,000 at stake. To find that jacket and get that ticket, we will lie, cheat, threaten, and steal if we have to. PRIEST: *enters* Oh, hello! BLANCHE: . . . anybody got a backup plan?
Also, the contrast between the wacky hijinks of the first half of the episode and the seriousness of the second half of the episodes doesn't always work. The toothy Congressman comes across as incredibly insincere, but I don't think he's supposed to? Also, I'm not sure why the episode invokes the image of Michael Jackson and his sparkly glove so blatantly when it's apparently not allowed to use his full name?
By the way, in case anyone is wondering, no, that wasn't actually Michael Jackson. But I still love how they work around referring to him. The bodyguard calls him "Michael," the auctioneer calls him "one of the world's leading musical talents," and Sophia says he's "that guy from the Pepsi commercial." Rose wasn't too far off when she made her mistake, also -- Michael J. Fox was in a few Diet Pepsi commercials in the 80s.
Episode rating: 🍰🍰🍰🍰 (four cheesecake slices out of five)
Favorite part of the episode
An important message sometimes doesn't need to be subtle.

Witness - Ida Sophia
“The repetitive and intense submergence and uplifting from the water takes a single baptism to an obsessive, relentless level. The action seeks to create space for the consequential pain of such actions to be witnessed, asking it to speak back as viewers consider their own, self-serving exertion. “Shot in a single take at The Pool of Siloam in Wirmalngrang/Beachport, ‘Witness’ opens with the gaze intentionally looking out, provoking the witnessing viewer to feel witnessed. Fatigue shows, echoing the difficulty of maintaining vainly hopeful actions longterm. In the bible, Jesus restores a blind man’s sight at the Pool of Siloam. This location choice was site specific, reflecting my attempt to ‘see’ Jesus like my Father did. I also spent my childhood swimming here. Referencing the bleak persistence, the synthesised and sampled sound composition (including underwater Hydrophone and Tchaikovsky) builds, commanding an unrelenting grip that verges on madness.”

Christian Medical College - [CMC], Vellore
Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore: A Comprehensive Overview
Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, is one of India's most prestigious and respected medical institutions. Founded in 1900 by Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, CMC has grown from a one-bed clinic into a globally recognized center for medical education, research, and healthcare. Located in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, this private, minority-run institution has maintained a commitment to excellence, innovation, and compassionate service for over a century.
Founding and Early History
Dr. Ida Scudder was inspired to start a medical institution in Vellore after witnessing the death of three women in childbirth in a single night, who refused care from male doctors due to cultural taboos. Motivated by this tragedy, she returned to the United States to study medicine at Cornell Medical College and became one of the first female doctors trained there. Upon returning to India, she started a small clinic, which evolved into the Mary Taber Schell Memorial Hospital in 1902. This hospital later became the cornerstone of what is now Christian Medical College, Vellore.
Initially focused on training Indian women in medicine and nursing, the institution quickly expanded to offer a broader range of medical education. Over time, it has evolved into a leading center of learning and service, known for its blend of modern medical science and community-focused care.
Academic Programs
CMC Vellore offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in medicine, nursing, and allied health sciences. It is affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.
At the undergraduate level, the flagship program is the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), which lasts four and a half years followed by a one-year compulsory rotating internship. Admission to the MBBS program is extremely competitive and is based on performance in the national NEET-UG exam. Other undergraduate programs include Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degrees in Nursing, Radiology, Medical Lab Technology, Optometry, and several other allied health science fields.
At the postgraduate level, the college offers Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Surgery (MS), Diplomate of National Board (DNB), Master of Chirurgiae (MCh), Doctorate of Medicine (DM), and Master of Science (M.Sc) degrees in specialized fields. Research-based doctoral programs, including the PhD in various biomedical and clinical sciences, are also offered.
CMC places a strong emphasis on early clinical exposure, practical experience, and ethical training. From the early years of their course, students are involved in community outreach, clinical rounds, and patient care, ensuring they graduate as competent and compassionate professionals.
Research and Innovation
CMC Vellore is not only a teaching hospital but also a leader in medical research in India. The institution is involved in numerous research projects, both independently and in collaboration with international agencies such as WHO, NIH (USA), and the Wellcome Trust. It contributes significantly to public health research and has developed several low-cost and innovative medical solutions.
The Stem Cell Research Center at CMC has pioneered work in regenerative medicine and hematology. The institution has also established dedicated labs for virology, nephrology, cardiology, and infectious diseases. Some of the most impactful contributions have come in the fields of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, leprosy, and cardiovascular medicine.
CMC publishes over 400 research articles each year in reputed national and international journals, a testament to its robust academic culture and commitment to advancement in medical science.
Tumblr media
Clinical Services
CMC Vellore is known for delivering high-quality, affordable healthcare to a diverse patient population. The hospital has over 2,600 beds and serves more than 8,000 outpatients and 2,000 inpatients daily. It operates several specialized units such as cardiology, neurology, oncology, urology, nephrology, gastroenterology, and more.
Notable achievements include India's first open-heart surgery in 1961 and the country’s first kidney transplant in 1971. In 2009, CMC successfully performed India's first ABO-incompatible kidney transplant, setting new standards in transplantation medicine.
In addition to the main hospital, CMC runs several other centers, including the Schell Eye Hospital, the Mental Health Center, and the Rehabilitation Institute. These units work in coordination to provide holistic care to patients from all backgrounds.
CMC is also known for its ethical and patient-centric approach. It strives to treat every patient with dignity and equality, and it offers subsidized or free care to thousands of patients who cannot afford treatment.
Community Outreach and Rural Health
One of the most distinctive features of CMC Vellore is its strong emphasis on community health. Several outreach programs serve rural, semi-urban, and tribal populations, providing not just medical care but also education, nutrition support, and livelihood training.
The Community Health and Development (CHAD) program caters to a population of over 250,000 . Through regular mobile clinics, health education programs, and immunization drives, CHAD has significantly improved health indicators in the region.
The Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA) works in the K.V. Kuppam block and combines health services with development initiatives like women's empowerment, microfinance, and skill development. Another innovative program is the Low Cost Effective Care Unit (LCECU), which serves urban slums in and around Vellore, delivering quality healthcare to marginalized populations.
These programs also serve as training grounds for students and residents, ensuring they gain firsthand experience in managing public health challenges.
Student Life and Campus Facilities
CMC’s main campus is located at Bagayam, around 7 km from the main hospital. It houses most of the undergraduate and postgraduate student hostels, lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, and recreational facilities.
The college provides a vibrant campus life. Students from different parts of the country and abroad come to study here, contributing to a culturally diverse and academically rich environment. Events such as college festivals, medical conferences, and outreach trips are regularly organized.
The institution also provides counseling, mentorship, and spiritual support to students. It maintains a strong Christian ethos while being inclusive of all faiths, and emphasizes service, humility, and compassion as core values.
Admissions and Selection Process
Admission to various courses at CMC is merit-based and includes both academic and personal elements. For MBBS, students must qualify through NEET-UG. However, CMC also assesses candidates' aptitude for service, especially in rural and underserved areas, and prefers candidates from Christian minority backgrounds in keeping with its founding mission.
The selection process typically includes a computer-based test, followed by interviews and assessments of personal suitability for the health profession. For postgraduate programs, NEET-PG is the gateway exam, followed by internal evaluation and interviews at CMC.
CMC also has a bonded seat system where selected students agree to work in underserved rural mission hospitals for a period after graduation. This system ensures that quality medical professionals reach the areas that need them the most.
Placements and Alumni Network
CMC Vellore has an exceptional placement record. Most graduates take up roles in reputed hospitals across India and abroad, with many opting to serve in rural mission hospitals as part of their service commitment. Others pursue higher education and research positions in leading global institutions.
The average salary package for MBBS graduates is competitive, with some specialized roles offering packages up to ₹25 lakhs per annum. Top recruiters include Apollo Hospitals, Fortis, AIIMS, and international healthcare institutions. Many alumni have become leaders in public health, academic medicine, and healthcare administration.
CMC also boasts a strong and supportive alumni network spread across the globe. This network helps with mentorship, collaborative research, and professional development for current students and recent graduates.
Rankings and Recognition

Diplomat William Henry Hunt (June 29, 1869 - December 20, 1951) diplomat, was born in Tennessee.
His father, William B. Hunt, was a white slave owner who fathered many children with his female. His mother, Sophia Hunt, was one of his father’s enslaved. He had three older sisters and two younger brothers.
His mother took her children to Nashville. He worked as a porter, handyman, and jockey until he decided to go back to school. He attended Lawrence Academy and was the only African American enrolled there at the time. He enrolled in Williams College but left the school due to what he alleged to be racial discrimination. He then worked for the Price McCormick Company as a clerk in New York City.
He married civil rights leader Ida Alexander Gibbs (1904), daughter of Mifflin Wistar Gibbs. President William McKinley hired him to be his clerk and assistant. He became vice Consul in May 1899 and was chosen by President Theodore Roosevelt to succeed Mifflin Gibbs as consul in Antananarivo in August of 1901. In November 1906, he became the consul in St. Etienne, France, and remained there until the office was closed in 1927. He continued to serve as consul in Guadeloupe in the West Indies, the Azores off the coast of Morocco, and Monrovia, where he worked until he retired on December 31, 1932. He spent more time in US diplomatic posts than any other African American.
He spent much of his retirement writing a memoir about his extraordinary life as a diplomat. He interacted with diplomats from other countries and counted Kaiser Wilhelm II and J.P. Morgan as among the many prominent people he met. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
