Alfred Soto: Chappell Roan's The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is a sparkling collection of moods and passing desires, best when euphoric. The ballads might have been even stronger had she spelled out their choruses. [7]

Grace Robins-Somerville: It's been too long since we've had a "spell the words out with your arms" song in the zeitgeist, and seeing people do the H-O-T-T-O-G-O dance at weddings has cemented its staying power. It's nice that lesbians have their "YMCA" now.  [8]

Katherine St. Asaph: "Hot to Go!" is a crowd chant-along that shouldn't work at all as one. The template is "YMCA," but the difference and the problem is that "YMCA" is instantly parseable when spelled out, while "H-O-T-T / O-G-O" takes a moment's reassembly. The other highlight line in "baby, don't you like this beat? I made it so you'd sleep with me" is endearingly blunt -- more musicians should be that honest -- but nevertheless cannot honestly be chanted by anyone but Dan Nigro or Chappell Roan. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that "Hot to Go!" is hugely effective at getting crowds to chant along. [7]

Aaron Bergstrom: Retroactively furious about the idea that one or more of the Village People potentially did or did not endorse Jimmy Carter in the 1980 Presidential election. [7]

Scott Mildenhall: Who or what is a hottogo? The chant falls short of total clarity by going two steps further than succinct, but therein lies the charm. Bursting at the seams of some slightly thin fabric, Chappell Roan carries this so far and fast that she might struggle to find her way back. [7]

Leah Isobel: There are about five perfect hooks on Chappell's debut album. "Baby don't you like this beat?/ I made it so you'd sleep with me" is one of them, precise and funny and melodically flawless. I think that was the moment that sold me on her whole project: the bluntness balanced by craft, the expertise made human by the raw and embarrassing vulnerability of wanting sex, wanting recognition, wanting anything at all. Also, have y'all heard the fanmade Rhythm Heaven edit for this? Banger! [8]

TA Inskeep: Every generation gets a new cheerleading-cheer anthem -- think Toni Basil's "Mickey" or Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" -- and here's the latest, with a bit of "Y.M.C.A." thrown in for good measure. It's hard to ignore Roan's joy on this chorus; this is also a rare pop single where its meme-ability actually draws me in (cf. "Call Me Maybe"). How can you not smile when you hear this? [7]

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: Of all the guises that Chappell Roan inhabited on her debut album, this always felt like the truest — she sounds like Devo if they slayed, still gawking and midwestern and not quite fitting a perfect archetype of pop stardom but still, nevertheless, a star. The weepy ballads (some of them great) fade away in the face of this, the goofy chant-a-longs and dance instructions wearing one's resistance down on the strength of pure charisma and craft. There are hooks upon hooks here — I think I've had just the synth chord on the prechorus stuck in my head before. [9]

Ian Mathers: I took the number of times I've caught myself humming this song since I first heard the record last year and divided it by a very large number and got this score. I am not currently interested in Discourse beyond that. [10]

Nortey Dowuona: You're trying to take out Chappell Roan the way you took out Amy Winehouse and I don't like it. Not one bit.  Also, the '80s actually kinda sucked -- let's not go back. (This song is great btw.) [8]

Jel Bugle: I know everyone loves Chappell, and I’ve not really bothered to get too excited. I like the Casio keyboard sounds, and spelling out words in songs is always a good trick (see "D I S C O," and I’m sure Olivia has a spelling words out song?). I can see why Sabrina is winning the chart battle here in the UK. I just feel like this song is okay, warm rather than hot -- a sort of personality over the strength of the song. Plus, I’m getting tired of this song constantly being pushed to me by Spotify -- if it happens again the [6] becomes a [5].  [6]

Taylor Alatorre: For all the talk of Chappell Roan hailing the return of “recession pop,” this strikes my ears as more of a grasping imitation of the real than most of what PC Music was accused of putting out. Maybe that’s unavoidable given the generation gap, as well as the decline of the universal pop star – Chappell covers “Bad Romance” on tour, but she doesn’t exude the belief that she can be a legitimate successor to Lady Gaga. She’s ambivalent about the compromises required for mass appeal, even on songs like this one which are structured, at least internally, toward that end. It’s all the external festooning and DIY-style pageantry which redirect the song’s course toward a cozier ideal of attainable imperfection, a glitzy and glammy take on self-sabotage. Which, in the end, is its own kind of earnestness. “HOT TO GO!” is confident enough in its own gangliness to bill itself as a coming-out party where everyone, even the normies, is invited, despite the singer’s doubts about the long-term viability of this promise. [6]

Tim de Reuse: The appeal of "Pink Pony Club" was immediately evident to me on first listen. But this one's a silly Chappell Roan song: The narrative here is buried under catchy turns of phrase and the hokey pokey-ass pre-chorus, leaving us to wring pathos out of a few scant lines in the verses. So, what's the draw? The simple build-and-release drama of a I-IV-I progression? The energy of a jittery, unkempt synthesizer-driven beat? Is the chant of "H-O-T-T-O-G-O" sugary enough to overcome my pop-pessimist cynicism and light up my long-calcified dopamine receptors for once? Eh, kinda. It's well-constructed, but it just isn't aiming all that high. [6]

Will Adams: Silly fun pop that doesn't require much thought -- just do the little dance and enjoy yourself! [6]

‘Outlander’ Season 7 Gets Split in Half, 8-Episode Part 1 Premieres in June

The second half of the time-traveling drama’s penultimate season will premiere in 2024

“Outlander” Season 7 will resume Claire (Caitríona Balfe) and Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) sprawling and globe-trotting love story in June on Starz, the network announced Thursday while also revealing the first images from the new season.

The penultimate season of the time-traveling drama will debut June 16 with the first eight episodes of its extended 16-episode season, with the second half of the two-part season set to premiere in 2024.

After previously announcing the drama would come to a close after Season 8, Starz has already renewed the series for an eighth and final season. “Outlander” fans are in no danger of letting go of the beloved characters, however, as the network has also greenlit a prequel series, titled “Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” which will follow Jamie Fraser’s parents.

Balfe and Heughan reprise their roles as Claire and Jamie, respectively, as Sophie Skelton returns as Brianna MacKenzie alongside Richard Rankin as Roger MacKenzie, John Bell as Young Ian, David Berry as Lord John Grey, Caitlin O’Ryan as Lizzie Beardsley and Paul Gorman as Josiah and Keziah Beardsley.

Previously announced new ensemble members include Charles Vandervaart as William Ransom, Izzy Meikle-Small as Rachel Hunter and Joey Phillips as Denzell Hunter.

In addition to starring in the historical fiction series, Balfe and Heughan executive produce alongside Matthew B. Roberts, Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis, Toni Graphia, Luke Schelhaas, Andy Harries, Jim Kohlberg. The series is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Left Bank Pictures and Story Mining & Supply Company, in association with Sony Pictures Television.

“Outlander” Season 7 premieres Friday, June 16 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Starz, with the season launching June 16 at 12:00 a.m. ET on the Starz app and all Starz streaming and VOD platforms. New episodes of the series will air weekly on Starz and will be available to stream weekly at midnight on Fridays on the Starz app as well as all Starz streaming and VOD platforms.

Abi Morgan's hit legal drama The Split returns for a two-part special

The BBC and SISTER are delighted to announce that production has begun on a two-part special of The Split, created and written by multi-award winning Abi Morgan, and set to air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later in the year. After the success of three series of The Split, the hit legal drama returns to our screens to explore the themes of love, legacy, and modern marriage, through a sparkling cast of characters that audiences know and love. The special will be distributed internationally by BBC Studios.

We left the final series with Hannah and Nathan attempting to divide up their twenty years together, and trying to navigate their way through a “good divorce”, questioning whether that is even possible.

Two years on, formidable family lawyer Hannah Defoe (Nicola Walker) and her family are back and have gathered for a beautiful wedding at a magnificent vineyard, nestled in Catalonia’s wine region. Set across one sun soaked weekend, The Split will encompass break-ups, reunions and like all good weddings, plenty of romance. As the sun rises over the glorious Spanish countryside, Hannah is compelled to banish the ghosts of her past and open herself up to the possibility of love again. Can she find the courage to take the leap into a new future?

Amongst a host of new characters including Toby Stephens (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Black Sails) as Archie Moore, cast confirmed to return for the Spanish extravaganza include Nicola Walker, Stephen Mangan, Annabel Scholey, Fiona Button, Deborah Findlay, Ian McElhinney, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Elizabeth Roberts and Alex Guersman.

Outlander cast members and series creatives are confirmed to attend the 2023 ATX TV Festival running June 1-4 in Austin, Texas. The festival announced Outlander stars will make the trip to Texas on June 1st – “World Outlander Day” – in support of the upcoming seventh season of the popular romantic time-traveling drama. Starz has set a June 16 launch date for the new season.

The ATX panel will include a first look at season seven.

In other news, Starz has released the titles of the first eight seasons on seven episodes:

Episode 1 – “A Life Well Lost,” which sounds incredibly ominous.

Episode 2 – “The Happiest Place on Earth.” Can we assume they’re not talking about Disneyland?

Episode 3 – “Death Be Not Proud,” which is also the name of an incredibly moving 1949 book by John Gunther.

Episode 4 – “A Most Uncomfortable Woman,” which could be about any female in the Outlander world.

Episode 5 – “Singapore.” Interesting.

Episode 6 – “Where the Waters Meet.”

Episode 7 – “A Practical Guide for Time Travelers,” which sounds like a must-read.

Episode 8 – “Turning Points.”

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan return to lead the cast as Claire and Jamie Fraser. Starz Renews Outlander For An Eighth And FINAL Season

As the headline says, that's it for Outlander. In addition, Starz has greenlit the 10 episode prequel series, "Blood of My Blood." Quotes, as well as a synopsis for the prequel and a video from the stars of the flagship show, below:

The 10-episode prequel series, “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” will center on the lives and relationship of Jamie Fraser’s parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie. 

“‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ is, at its heart, a love story. It will explore what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when love is considered a luxury, and when marriages are made strategically, often for political or financial gain,” says Matthew B. Roberts, showrunner and executive producer. He continues, “the title is a nod to Jamie Fraser’s marriage vow to Claire and there will be several names and faces that ‘Outlander’ fans will know and recognize. November 12 - five weeks, 3 days and Molly D arrived in Vero!!! It was a long trip but we had fun (and frustration) along the way. Weather delays, high wind and seas, shallow areas, inconsiderate boats waking us, a SpaceX launch, dolphins, manatees and little no seeums.

Molly D started today’s trip later than usual. We needed to time our travel to arrive at the Wabasso Bridge near low tide, but still on a lowering tide.

I’ve often mentioned how important it is to stay in the channel and to not stray too far from that channel. One poor soul learned that lesson the hard way.

This boat ran aground on a shoal just outside the channel. The boat wasn’t too far from Molly D.

This is our 10th trip on the ICW. On all but 2 of those trips (2 trips were on our former Molly D whose mast height was about 56’) we have dreaded the Wabasso Bridge. The Wabasso, for whatever unforgivable reason, is not 65’ high. I think its clearance is in the 62’-64’ range. Molly D needs 64.5’ to clear her antenna. Her instruments are at 62’. The water in the river today was higher than usual, and the tide range was minimal. We were prepared to lose the wind instruments today. By the grace of God, Molly D survived the low bridge clearance. Her flexible antenna was the only thing that pinged every beam under the bridge.

Whew! Not clearance numbers we like to see.

Sol A Maya came into Vero a couple of hours ahead of Molly D. She was lucky enough to get the last available mooring in the south mooring field. Molly D rafted with her.

The crews of Sol A Maya and Molly D are so happy to be in Vero. We will be in one spot for at least 2 months. No releasing a mooring, hauling anchor or releasing dock lines. No 5:30 wake up calls. Amen!

On our walk this afternoon, the city bus passed us. Ian, the afternoon bus driver, recognized us and gave us a thumbs up. Nice to be remembered.

So What Happened?

So, Jenny had done something really reckless when she tried to bring back Juliette’s mom. It didn’t work and she ended up witch-slapping herself into a mental ‘power block’. No juju for Jenny. It was and is devastating but Jenny had to keep going.

Prom was supposed to be an excellent distraction to all of her problems. To all of everyone’s problems. Especially Juliette who had been battling her own magic for some time. Jenny knew that something was wrong the second that Juliette made her double door exit from prom - the second she’d locked eyes with Lana Anderson and knocked her to the ground.

Jenny called Ian Morrison for a ride before the first magic born storm clouds could hit Havensdale that night. She grabbed Christian Cooper- Isabel Valentine and Claire Knighton insisting on coming with them- and they were off. It was more than a bad feeling that had settled over Jenny, much more.

Still, in her worst nightmares, she never imagined that they’d walk in on Juliette Palmer becoming a warlock--- by k*lling Leo and Effy McCoy. It was the worst day of Jenny’s life. She felt like Juliette had killed a part of her that night too. Just like that, Juliette was gone and the group were left to pick up the pieces.

Unfortunately, the bad was only just beginning. Graduation, summer, and then Founder’s Festival came around quick. Jenny hadn’t had enough time to process what had happened really. To even begin to accept just how much her once soulmate had changed... She would learn the hard way soon enough.

Without magic, Jenny felt useless when the D-Day kicked off. She did her best to make sure her family were okay, that their loved ones were taken care of. That first night they just had to survive as it slowly but surely sunk in: the bad guys had won.

In 3 years a lot has changed. Jenny learned how to do more simple spells using ingredients and books. Learned more practical, human, first aid and how to fight (a little). Lyndsy’s Café became a safe place for those who needed a place to hide. They’re allies to the underground Resistance which doesn’t come without its share of trouble. But they couldn’t just sit around and do nothing.

In the beginning, Jenny had tried everything to get her magic back properly but whatever block she put on herself after almost crossing the line, it’s a tough one to crack. She tells herself she’s accepted it now but that’s a lie.
