Basically I work as an international advisor in a British company which only handles British customers, they specifically hire people from my country because it's a 3rd world country and would be cheap labor and because they know that we won't find any other or better job because of our county's current economic crisis. My entire part-time salary is from $100 to $135 a month which is like, nothing compared to what the British employees who work in the same company doing much less work than me get. My department which only ppl from my country are assigned to, handles 89 queries while all the other departments that only British and Indian employees are assigned to handle from 10 to 20 queries, when we get any system outages which happens quite often, British and Indian employees don't take calls because they can't work without a system, while they force us to take calls just to tell the customers "sorry, we currently have a system outage" and we would be just like punching bags for the frustrated customers that would be upset when we tell them sorry I can't do anything to help you because I have no system at the moment and then to top it off, they don't remove any negative impact such calls during system outages leaves on our performance so we wouldn't get our target bonus and they would end up paying us even less. Not to mention the sneaky ways they force us to work unpaid overtime without really saying it, as we are required to submit a note after every call stating everything happened on the calls without leaving any small details while not having enough time between the calls to type them as sometimes we would just have 2 minutes between every call and sometimes the calls would be back to back without a single second, and we're not allowed to take any time without calls outside of our scheduled breaks either which forces us to type these notes during our breaks and after our shifts. And all of this is just the short version of things, there are so many more messed up things that I left off to avoid having even a longer post.

Anyway, I used to work a full-time shift in that company but I couldn't take 9 hours a day of such stress especially that our department handles (accounts management + complaints + billing) hence why we handle such a huge amount of queries in comparison to other departments so most of the calls I get would be angry customers just yelling which resulted in a huge decline in my mental health, especially that I already suffer from depression, anxiety and a bunch of other stuff so I decided to switch to part time before I completely lose my mind especially after I used to spend the entire day just crying, having panic attacks in the morning the closer my shift start time approaches sometimes and having nightmares so many nights + the rate of my PTSD flashbacks of some traumatic events of things happened to me in the past increased dramatically so I ended up switching to part time and things were kinda manageable, my part-time salary was barley enough for basic living expenses but it was better than having to live that nightmare 9 hours a day plus the extra time I would have to spend after shifts typing notes. But today, I went to work and I was surprised that they switched me back to a full time shift starting tomorrow, they have been threatening me with it for quite sometime now, basically saying that as a graduate it's unreasonable for me to have a part time shift and that only students are allowed to take part time shifts because they need it for studying and I would always reply by telling them that having a part-time shift is the only thing that keeps me going and that I won't be able to continue working if they switched me back to full time. So allegedly!!.. because last month I didn't achieve the target which was basically due to the company having 3 major system outages that only our department (aka Egyptians) had to take calls during it, I don't deserve to have the exception of having a part time now, even tho almost everyone in our department didn't achieve the target for the same reason so yeah, it's now either I go back to working a full time shift of that nightmare which I'm absolutely sure that I won't be able to survive or I resign because they aren't even giving me any time to think or try to find something eles.

TRAVELLING TO DOWNTOWN SINGAPORE FROM CHANGI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Considered as one of the best airports in the world for six consecutive years, Changi International Airport is a destination in itself with its groundbreaking design and amenities like themed gardens, movie theatres and entertainment corners which some you can avail for free with your departure boarding pass.

A free Skytrain service operates from 5 AM – 2:30 AM between Terminal 1, 2 and 3; and a complimentary Shuttle Bus service connect Terminal 4 to Terminal 2.

BY SUBWAY (SMRT): The fastest way to get to the city from the airport. Located in the basement of Terminals 2 and 3, it is accessible from the Arrival and Departure Halls and operates from 5:30 AM on Mondays and Saturdays, 6 AM on Sundays and public holidays till 11:20 PM.

Hop onboard the train for Tanah Merah Interchange Station, then transfer to an East-West Line train going to the station nearest to where you’re staying. You can use your Singapore Tourist Pass.

HOW TO TRAVEL FROM SINGAPORE TO MALAYSIA OR VICE VERSA

Singapore and Malaysia are neighbouring countries which you can travel by air or overland via bus, train and car. However, I’ll only recommend either taking the bus or plane since taking the train is quite a hassle as you need to transfer through different stations.

BY PLANE: Most convenient yet expensive. If you’re departing from Malaysia, a one-way AirAsia flight costs around RM120 but from Singapore, it will likely cost you around SGD 60 for a one-way AirAsia flight.

BY BUS: The cheapest and convenient way. Numerous buses depart daily from Singapore or Malaysia all differ in price depending on the time and comfort. The bus will usually take 5 to 6 hours to reach its destination. A great place to start your search is at EasyBook.

Some buses feature reclining seats with enough legroom, a USB socket to charge your mobile phones or even WIFI. The cheapest you can get from Singapore to Malaysia or vice versa is SGD 10 (RM 30), and the most expensive on a luxurious bus is SGD 45 (RM 135).

TIP: Be reminded to check the corresponding departure and arrival location in Singapore (or Malaysia) and the travel date you choose in buying tickets. Please be advised to be at the departure area 30 minutes or an hour before the departure time.

HOW TO GET AROUND

Singapore and Malaysia’s MRT system are both efficient that we used it everywhere we go. We only needed to take a taxi when it was odd hours, and a bus when we went to Merlion Park after having lunch at Lau Pa Sat and when I was heading to the airport from Terminal Bersapuda in Downtown Kuala Lumpur.

We started our in Singapore and opted to rent a Singapore Tourist Pass, a special tourist card to unlimited bus and train rides (excluding premium services such as Sentosa Express) for the duration it is valid. It costs SGD 10 for one day pass, SGD 16 for two days and SGD 20 for three days; and with an additional SGD 10 rental deposit which you can get back once you return the card.

However, if you’re staying longer than three days and doesn’t need unlimited rides daily, it’s better if you get the alternative EZ-Link Card that you can use at the MRT for a discounted trip rather than single-journey tickets, public buses, taxis and even at a convenience store. It’s similar to Korea’s T-Money Card.

If you need to travel by bus often, it’s best that you use Google Maps to help you navigate as it tells you the bus number you need to ride on.

On the contrary, I opted to do single-journey tickets when I was in Kuala Lumpur since I didn’t stay longer than one day as I was moving around Malaysia and it’s relatively cheap with most subway fare costing RM 2 for a short-distance journey.

TIP: Familiarize the transportation system through these train maps: Singapore and Malaysia, and calculate your train fare in Malaysia.

No trip to Singapore is complete without a visit to Chinatown, a place of mixed culture, cheap hawker centres to trendier bars and restaurants, and where you can buy the best bargain deals for souvenirs.

BUDDHA TOOTH RELIC TEMPLE A beautiful four storey wooden eccentric structure, which is based on the Buddhist mandala and integrated with the Tang Dynasty’s Buddhism. As the name suggests, it houses what the Buddhists regarded as the left canine tooth of Buddha. Wear appropriate clothes if you intend to go inside the temple.

ANN SIANG ROAD Stroll down these elegantly restored shophouses that house the traditional home of clan a ssociations, exclusive social clubs, restaurants, bars and niche boutiques.

On Friday and Saturday evenings from 7 PM to 1 AM, both Ann Siang Road and Club Street, the name comes from the Chinese clubs that used to line the stretch, comes to life as the area is closed off to traffic and the crowd (and maybe even drinks) spills out onto the streets.

NUS BABA HOUSE The Peranakans are the descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to the Malay archipelago. Once the home of a Peranakan Baba called Wee Bin, the furniture inside is all relics, making it a genuine representation of Peranakan life and culture in Singapore in the 19th and 20th centuries. Booking is necessary for free guided tours.

3.) Eat in a hawker centre

Lau Pa Sat is one of the most famous hawker centres where you can have good local foods at reasonable prices in Singapore. There are plenty of stalls to choose from, so have a walk around and check out what’s for sale and what others are eating– the perfect way to avoid food envy. A meal costs between SGD 2.50 – SGD 5.

Throughout the day different stalls are open, but it’s best to come here after 7 PM as this is when Satay Street opens, where they closed the roads when the sellers set up their barbeques. It might not be the best quality meat around, but sitting on the plastic tables with a beer and the famous snack is a fun way to end your time at Lau Pa Sat.

4.) Walk around the iconic Merlion and its nearby attractions

MERLION Being Singapore’s national icon, there’s no need for an introduction. The Merlion’s body symbolises Singapore’s humble beginnings as a fishing village called Temasek, which means “sea town” in Old Javanese while its head represents Singapore’s original name, Singapura or “lion city” in Malay.

How to Get There: Raffles Place (East-West Line) → Exit towards the United Overseas Bank Plaza and from the middle of the plaza, you’ll see the Fullerton Hotel. Merlion Park is behind the hotel.

THE ESPLANADE You wouldn’t miss this performing arts centre as it’s eye-catching! Locals have dubbed the twin structures as “the Durian”, as it structures resemble the spiky tropical fruit that is unique to this part of the world.

SINGAPORE FLYER Sticking out among the skyscrapers in the Singapore skyline, the Singapore Flyer is no ordinary orb. This giant observation wheel offers 360-degree city views, a panorama that stretches to parts of Malaysia and Indonesia on a clear day.

A scenic 30-minutes spin on the Singapore Flyer takes you 165 metres above ground or as high as 42 storeys, making it Asia’s largest giant observation wheel, as you marvel at the spectacular scenery below in a fully air-conditioned glass capsule.

You can go on a regular flight but if you want something a little more memorable, how about going on one while sipping on cocktails or champagne? For people travelling as a couple, they even offer flights with a romantic four-course dinner for two.

You can buy tickets online for SGD 33 or through Klook. Klook offers a Singapore Flyer and Gardens by the Bay combo pass, as well as vouchers to their beverage and dinner flights.

HELIX BRIDGE A unique, visually stunning feature in Singapore that links Marina Bay South to Marina Centre. A way to enjoy and photograph views from this bridge is through its viewing platforms. Each night the Helix Bridge is illuminated providing a beautifully lit walkway.

ARTSCIENCE MUSEUM The ArtScience Museum, which is the boldly lotus-inspired building that houses internationally renowned exhibitions, beautifully fuses art and science to tell fascinating stories. Immerse yourselves in the dynamic, digital universe of interactive art installations at Future World: Where Art Meets Science, a highly raved permanent exhibition in the museum. You can book your tickets at Klook for SGD 18.

MARINA BAY SANDS MALL Marina Bay Sands is the most iconic hotel in Singapore and sits directly opposite the Gardens by the Bay, which makes it the best place to grasp the size of the park. I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of its infinity pool on social media. Sadly, it’s only open to hotel guests, but, the next best thing for you not to miss its unparalleled view would be to head up to the Sand Skypark observation deck on the 57th level. You can buy tickets at the gate or purchase in advance via Klook for SGD 20.

The hotel has a flagship shopping mall too called The Shoppes, where you can shop the biggest collection of premium and luxury designer fashion and accessories.

Witness its waterfront come alive at night with its Wonder Full Light and Water Show, Southeast Asia’s grandest light and water show. It is free of charge, and the show runs at 8 PM and 9:30 PM every Thursday to Sunday; and 8 PM, 9:30 PM and 11:00 PM every Friday and Saturday.

TIP: The best location to see it would be outside of The Shoppes’ main exit or the left of the Louis Vuitton store, where you will be in the centre of the show.

5.) See the future at Gardens by the Bay

Singapore is considered the greenest city in Asia and a fitting symbol to it is Gardens by the Bay. It’s home to the mind-blowing Supertree Grove and two marvelous conservatories— Cloud Forest and Flower Dome.

SUPERTREE GROVE Stand in awe of these astounding vertical gardens planted with over 162,900 varieties of bromeliads, orchids, ferns, and tropical flowering climbers.

Designed to resemble towering trees and functioned like them as well- they all collect rainwater for use in irrigation and fountain displays, some are equipped with solar panels to store energy for the nightly light show, while others are used as air exhaust receptacles to help cool the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest conservatories.

Walking around the park won’t cost you a cent, but access to the OCBC Skyway, where you can walk between three Supertrees for 15 minutes, is SGD 8 for adults and SGD 5 for children ages 3 -12.

SUPERTREE ROOFTOP BAR At the top of the tallest Supertree are a restaurant and rooftop bar. The latter has an entrance of SGD 18 per person, which includes one complimentary drink. A npice place to chill out while waiting for the light show.

OCBC GARDEN RHAPSODY When day turns to night, the Supertrees come alive casting a glow over the park. The OCBC Garden Rhapsody is free of charge, and showtime is at 7:45 PM and 8:45 PM. Come early to get a good spot as for you to lay down.

THE CLOUD FOREST The smaller shell-shaped greenhouse highlights a 35-meter high mountain that boasts the world’s tallest indoor waterfall covered in lush tropical highland vegetation. It has two platforms, which give you stunning aerial views of the entire conservatory, Cloud Walk and Tree Top. The tour starts with a lift that takes you to the peak where you’ll start walking down the mist in Cloud Walk to the lower ground by the Tree Top.

THE FLOWER DOME Enter a world of perpetual spring through exhibits, which are complemented by varying displays in the Flower Field reflecting different seasons and festivals. You will also find yourself on a journey around the world with Baobaos from Africa, Olive trees from Spain, and Kangaroo Paw from Australia.

Combined admission to both the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome conservatories is SGD 28 for adults and SGD 15 for kids 3-12 at the gate, but you can get a discount through Klook. They offer a combined pass to both conservatories and the OCBC Skyway as well for SGD 30.

You can visit their Ticketing Counter at Concourse Level in Petronas Towers, or you can buy online in advance to avail the Petronas Tour which costs RM 80 for adults and RM 33 for kids (3-12 years). Batu Caves, one of Kuala Lumpur’s most frequented tourist attractions, is a limestone hill comprising three major caves and several smaller ones. The 100-year-old temple is considered an important religious landmark by Hindus as the Cathedral Cave, the largest and most popular cavern in Batu Caves houses several Hindu shrines beneath its 100-metre high arched ceiling. It’s a strenuous climb up the 272 steps to the top of the caves so make sure that you don’t bring all your baggage.

Note: There is an ongoing track upgrading work between KL Sentral and Putra station that will last until November 2019.

How to Get There: → From KL Sentral, take the free shuttle bus to Sentul Station. The bus parks at the basement bus station, next to the KLIA2-bound buses. → From Sentul station, buy a ticket to the KTM Komuter Line for Batu Caves railway station, which costs RM 5 for a return journey. Jessica Herrin had actually dropped out of Stanford Business School to found her first successful company, which she eventually sold 5 years later for $78 million — sounds like a lot of top entrepreneurs. [3]

Their designs have been featured on Gossip Girl, In Style, and Lucky Magazine.

Their jewelry is designed in San Francisco and New York by top designers, and it is very cute and trendy. Their products have been featured in Vogue, In Style, and The New York Times. Half their collection is under $50.

Jewelry includes everything from necklaces, earrings, and bracelets to rings, charms, watches, and jewelry display and storage. A good amount of their jewelry is under $100, with earrings in the $30-50 range and necklaces in the $50-100 range. Not cheap, but neither is their quality.

Bags include purses, clutches, totes, wallets, and weekenders. Wallets and clutches are in the $50-100 range whereas purses and weekenders range from $80-150.

Accessories include sunglasses, scarves, tunics, sarongs, and bag charms. Scarves are around $50-70, sunglasses around $100-130, and sarongs are $49.

Clothing includes tops, leggings, cardigans, jackets, and dresses. Casual tees range from $29 to $39, while dressy casual tops are $69 and up. Cardigans and pullovers are around $79-99. Dresses sell for as much as $139. Dressier pieces, including a Metallic Moto Jacket and a Lace Bomber, are around $149-198.

Again, they’re masterful when it comes to marketing these products and pushing the image of high-fashion. Aside from calling their parties “trunk shows,” they encourage people to host “pop-up shops” (way to ride the trend wave) featuring some of their luxury items.

Compensation Plan

If you do decide to become an Independent Stylist and host Trunk Shows, what does your income really like?

You get free product, definitely. A trunk show could score you $250+ in free jewelry if you can rally up your #girlsquad to buy stuff from you.

If you sell $300-499, you get $45-75 in free product and two 50% off items

If you sell $500-999, you get $100-200 in free product and three 50% off items

If you sell $1,000+, you get $250-500 in free product and four 50% off items

Overall, Stella & Dot has paid over $300 million in commissions to 50,000 stylists. That’s actually not bad. [9]

That’s an average of $6,000 per distributor, which, if it really distributed that way, would be better than most MLMs. The trouble is, it doesn’t. According to the fine print on Stella & Dot’s website, not all stylists qualify to receive commissions each month. The average earnings of paid stylists who did qualify was just $1,441 in 2017. Nothing to write home about.

The commission plan is very simple and transparent.

Personal sales commission is paid out weekly, and it starts at 25%.

25% isn’t bad, but it isn’t great. That being said, you can up your commission rates with their monthly power seller bonus:

2,500 QV+ gets you 30% commission

5,000 QV+ gets you 32% commission

10,000 QV+ gets you 35% commission

Then, of course, you’ve got your team sales commission.

Payouts are based on CV, and you can earn down to your 5th generation, but only if you hit a double diamond director rank.

Starting out, you make 4-6% on your level 1 recruits. A few jumps in rank will get you 8% on level 1 recruits and 3% on level 2 recruits.

Commissions on level 1 get up to 10% and level 2 gets up to 5%. Generation 1-5 commissions vary from 1-2.5%.

There are also some one-time promotion bonuses. If you can get up to the high-level ranks these bonuses hit the 5-figures, which would be awesome except that it’s near impossible to get that far.

The good about Stella & Dot

Stella & Dot is run by professional businesswomen who are experienced in growing successful businesses. The fact that Stella & Dot has been listed on the Inc. 500 is testament to the fact that they know what they’re doing.

The fact that there are no obvious lawsuits tied to the company also speaks well of them. They’re honest and as transparent as many successful businesses are.

Their marketing is stellar. Their designs are unique. They protect their designs by slapping imitators with Cease & Desist Letters. These traits can only help you succeed as one of their distributors. The brand is solid and is likely to get stronger n the coming years.

The bad about Stella & Dot

Finding financial information and specific numbers about distributors is hard. The company holds their cards close to the chest, which doesn’t mean they’re doing anything shady but does make you wonder.

It’s possible they don’t want to share numbers so they aren’t targetted by lawsuits (if so, it’s working). But it’s also possible they’re hiding other important information as well. Just something to watch out for.

Like most MLMs, you’re not going to make a full-time income from this company unless you’re incredibly skilled at network marketing. The company tells you, “How much you earn is up to you.” But we know that’s not true. You’re going to invest tons of time and money to make it work.

According to their website, if you have just one to two hours a week, you can invest $299 to get started and expect to earn $250 a month. To earn $5,000 a month, you’ll need to invest 15-20 hours a week and will need to buy the More to Love Kit, which is $499. To earn $10,000 a month, which is the level that would give you true financial freedom, you need to work 25-40 hours a week and invest $699 in the Ultimate Kit. So you’ll have fewer financial worries but no free time to enjoy it.

So, this is a trendy MLM that can definitely attract recruits and grow. And the founder knows what she’s doing for sure.

Having a good product, growth, and fun opportunities for distributors is great but it doesn’t mean you make a killing.

But it could be a fun side gig, especially if you’re into jewelry.

She's terrified not just about the diagnosis itself but the cost. She was already financially strapped and trying to figure out how to pay for housing after college. I had Hodgkin's Lymphoma at 16-17, but my parents have insurance, and they are the ones who handled the bills. I never paid for anything myself so I really don't know about the cost involved. I saw one bill for my radiation and was literally shocked-still by the amount. It was like $1500 for each treatment I think, and I was getting them Monday-Friday then. Chemo was much more, but I never saw a bill for it so I really don't know the price. I did see a bill for one night I spent in the emergency room when I had this awful infection and a terrible fever, and without insurance that one night would have been over $7000! With insurance I think it was like $2400. All of my treatments and doctor's offices are in posh medical facilities in affluent parts of Los Angeles like Beverly Hills and Westwood / Bel Air, so perhaps that's why my medical care was so much. I honestly don't know. I wish I knew how to support or advise this girl. She's too old to attend the support group I went to, and I don't really know that much about NH-L because it's quite different than HL. I was fortunate to never have to be concerned about the finances, and I don't even know what the total amounted to since my parents won't tell me. They said, that it's not my concern. It was all medical care for me, so you'd think it would be my concern, but whatever. Will her oncologist's office help her to find financial support? How does that even work? What do they do if you can't pay? It would suck if she had to file bankruptcy this early in her life. Won't that keep her from getting a job, a loan for a house, and everything else? She went to USC. This feature allows the platform to store and run computer programs and enables developers to build and deploy decentralized applications and create whatever operations they want with permanent, trusted record of assets and transactions. The first public Ethereum backed network went live in 2015 and supports ether (ETH), currently the second highest valued cryptocurrency at $63 Billion.  ETH finances the Ethereum Swiss Foundation  and is used by application developers to pay for transaction fees and services on the Ethereum network.  

The platform has worldwide adoption. As Nick Johnson, the chief software architect of Ethereum Foundation, puts it:

“We are building a bridge between the human readability of cryptographic addresses and machine readability.  While some others are working similar platforms that they feel may have their own advantages, the size of the development teams around Ethereum ballooned with initial spikes in interest to something larger than anything else in the space. With that, application development, innovation in scaling and other areas followed the trend, thereby creating a snowball effect.”

Ron Resnick, Executive Director of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance which launched last year adds:

“EEA serves as the connective tissue between Ethereum Blockchain and the evolving enterprise industry with over 450 members from all around the world — 135 in the Banking Work Group — which are driving production deployments through a community of over 30,000 developers.”

Take for example ConsenSys, an EEA member firm, which various Ethereum projects including Quorum, and the EU Blockchain Observatory and Forum and trains Ethereum developers at its Academy.

The EEA is also a member of Blockchain Research Institute (BRI), based in Toronto, which is dedicated to over 70 research projects that proposes ways in which Blockchain technology can be utilized to impact various industries.  BRI has partnered with the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) of Canada to build a nationwide Blockchain ecosystem; alongside the Bank of Canada which has explored and experimented with a National cryptocurrency.  

Cryptocurrency mining

But it’s not only Blockchain innovation where Canada excels in. According to Hydro Quebec, the province has an energy surplus equivalent to 100 Terawatt hours over 10 years and offers some of the lowest electricity rates in North America.  This has drawn cryptominers to the region, including from China, in droves. A cryptominers easy, breezy life style starkly contrasts that with a gold miner who works 5,400 to 5,600 feet below surface, at suffocating temperatures, dripping with sweat, while punching holes into burning rock walls, to find hidden gold, in the dark.

Here is an example.  China’s Bitmain Technologies began mining in Canada in 2016, when ETH traded at $1.  When ETH’s price rose 63,600% to $636 with no implemented hard cap on the total ETH supply, Bitmain first announced a new specialized mining system for ETH; then set its eyes on cryptocurrency mining sites in Quebec, as it takes on average 29.05 TWh annually to operate a cryptocurrency mining operation. That’s about 0.13 percent of total global electricity consumption.  

While this may be potential bad news for the smaller cryptominers in the region, a local ETH miner shrugged it off:

“Quebec is one of the best places in the world for mining, thanks to low cost electricity, cool temperatures, and high-speed internet. There’s a lot of data centers in Montreal and they’ll rent you a space for your own server or ZTE smartphone–Sugar S11. Since you’d be paying about half to 1/3rd the electricity price of Ontario, then the added expense of rent is well worth it”  

However, recently Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard warned that “Cryptominers planning to move to the region will not get cheap electricity from the government-owned utility Hydro-Quebec, as the utility may not have enough power to meet the demand.” The utility has received an order to await instructions from the government.

Light cryptocurrency regulation

Excessive regulation could stifle innovation; accordingly, Canada lightly regulates cryptocurrency/ICO/tokens.  And offers a wide selection of government — federal and provincial — incentives and aid to startup tech companies.

Last year, with the boom in Ethereum Blockchain based ICOs that raised $4 Billion worldwide, the Canadian Securities Administrators suggested that Canadian Securities Law may be potentially applicable to cryptocurrencies. The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) on the other hand granted regulatory relief to allow Ontario’s first regulated ICO under existing exemptions in securities laws.

And the British Columbia Securities Commission approved Canada’s first registered cryptocurrency investment fund, acknowledging that it views cryptocurrency investments as a new and novel way to invest.  This ruling allowed pension, investment and venture capital funds including the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System’s Ethereum Capital to invest in cryptocurrencies and tokens.

This year, amid extreme market volatility, Canada’s first Blockchain exchange-traded fund began trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.  And OSC started examining the business activities of several exchanges on the concern that they were allowing trading in tokens that would otherwise qualify as securities.

Cryptocurrency taxation with incentives

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) began taxing cryptocurrencies in 2013, but to bolster technological and scientific innovation the –Federal and provincial—governments provide various Research and Development (R&D) tax incentives.  

Laura Gheorghiu a tax partner at Gowling WLG explained that the CRA has characterized cryptocurrency as a commodity, therefore the exchange of it becomes a taxable event as a barter transaction giving rise to either business income (fully taxable) or capital gains (50% taxable)— depending on the facts and circumstances– measured according to the value of the assets exchanged in Canadian Dollars.  

If a cryptocurrency is held as a capital asset (like an investment), then the gain is classified as a capital gain and taxed as such.  If the cryptocurrency is situated, deposited or held outside of Canada directly or through funds, taxpayer must adhere to foreign reporting rules.

If an employee receives cryptocurrency as payment for salary or wages, or otherwise in connection with employment, the amount, computed in Canadian dollars, is included in the employee’s income. Mining of cryptocurrencies is taxed as either a business or a personal hobby (non-taxable).

Business income, wages or capital gains are taxed at the applicable tax rate for the taxpayer in question.  The general combined Federal/provincial income tax rates in Canada vary between 26.5% to 30% for corporations and 44.5% to 58.75% for individuals depending on the province.

A non-resident that carries on a business in Canada, is subject to taxation under the same rules as a Canadian resident. Cross-border payments of rents or royalties in cryptocurrency to a non-resident are subject to a withholding tax of 25%, that may be reduced under an applicable tax treaty.

Personal tax returns are due at the end of April and corporate tax returns are due six months after the fiscal year-end of the corporation.

When it comes to luxury house hunters such as the Kardashians, Floyd Mayweather, and star couple JAY Z and Beyoncé, their property portfolios grew in 2017 with no end in sight. On the other side of the golden coin, the real estate holdings of Eminem, Lil Wayne, and Reba McEntire went south.

Then there’s “poor” 50 Cent, who’s in a class of his own. The longtime housing has-been is still looking for a buyer for his wayward Connecticut mansion. We’re looking forward to a time when the gods of real estate finally smile upon him, which didn’t happen in 2017.

Join us as we look back at 2017’s biggest booms and busts in the high-stakes world of celebrity real estate.

Winner: Beyoncé and JAY Z

After years of speculation, searching, and rental test drives of ultraluxe mansions, the A-list couple finally found a place to call their own in Los Angeles. Not only did they purchase a 30,000-square-foot estate with eight bedrooms, four pools, a 15-car garage, recording studio, basketball court, and views of the downtown skyline, they also snagged the Bel Air mansion at a $47 million discount. The asking price for the off-market property was rumored to be $135 million, but Bey and Jay offered only $88 million, and a deal was struck.

In addition, they purchased a stunning $26 million mansion in East Hampton, NY, in the exclusive Georgica Pond area. They also scored a deal on this seven-bedroom estate, which had been listed for nearly $29 million. So what’s a million or three when your estimated net worth is close to $1.3 billion?

Loser: Eminem

Rapper Eminem, aka Marshall Mathers, is making a triumphant comeback on the music scene, but he can’t claim the same victory when it comes to his real estate investments. He recently sold his 17,500-square-foot mansion in Rochester Hills, MI, for $1.9 million, which seems to be a fair price, considering that it was assessed at $1,763,160 in 2016. However, that sales price is less than half the $4.75 million he paid in 2003 for the five-bedroom, 10-bath property outside Detroit. That’s quite a loss!

At least the deal was quick, if not painless. The mansion was snapped up just a few weeks after it was listed at $2 million.

Winner: Floyd Mayweather

The fighter’s real estate portfolio kept pace with his unblemished record in the ring. After handily dispatching Conor McGregor in late August, and pocketing an estimated $300 million, Mayweather picked up a recently renovated French modern–style estate in one of the most coveted pockets of Beverly Hills, CA, for $25.5 million. And he managed to jab the seller into a discount, since the massive mansion was originally listed for $28,950,000. Perhaps his penchant for paying in cash had something to do with the bargain he knocked out.

The boxer’s real estate portfolio also includes a $2.4 million condo at the Ritz-Carlton Residences in downtown Los Angeles, a penthouse and $7 million waterfront mansion in the Miami area, plus at least five homes in Las Vegas. He’s a champ in more than one arena.

Loser: Scottie Pippen

Retired NBA great Scottie Pippen has had not one, but two luxurious spreads on and off the market for years now, and he hasn’t been able to close a deal on either one.

The ex-Chicago Bulls superstar’s Highland Park property is a five-bedroom spread on 2.5 acres. It has an infinity pool, home theater, wine cellar, eight-car garage, and an indoor half-court featuring a rendering of Pippen’s No. 33 jersey. The mansion, which was listed for $3.1 million in June 2016, is currently available for $2,795,000.

Then there’s Pippen’s Italian-style waterfront mansion in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The six-time NBA champ has been trying to sell the megamansion, known as “Villa del Lago,” since 2009. Priced at $16 million nearly a decade ago, it was recently languishing on the market for $10.9 million.

In September, Pippen put the place—featuring a 205-foot-long concrete dock and NBA-size basketball court—up for rent at $40,000 a month, hoping to appeal to a vagabond baller who’d rather rent than buy.

Winners: Kardashian-Jenner real estate empire

When it comes to keeping up with the Kardashians, their never-ending real estate deals are harder to follow than their complicated love lives. 2017 was no exception.

Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner recently purchased a brand-new, $10 million custom estate in the exclusive enclave of Hidden Hills, CA. The 9,400-square-foot, six-bedroom home sits on a 1.28-acre lot that’s a mere half-mile away from her current home, and it’s practically across the street from Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West‘s gigantic estate/construction project.

In further evidence that mother and daughter are practically joined at the hip, Kardashian West and Jenner just bought three brand-new units in a luxury development called Avanti in their beloved Calabasas. In an off-market deal, Jenner shelled out more than $3 million for two residences, while Kardashian West snagged one of her own for $1.6 million.

Kendall Jenner (Jenner’s younger daughter and Kardashian West’s half-sister) is also busy with real estate. She listed her corner condo in The Wilshire, a luxury building in the Westwood section of Los Angeles, for $1.6 million. Rumor has it that the 2,068-square-foot apartment didn’t have enough closet space.

Finally, makeup mogul Kylie Jenner (Kendall’s sister) went on a real estate rampage in 2017, selling two of the three homes she’d purchased not all that long ago. The first was a four-bedroom home in Hidden Hills, located right next to the home where she currently resides. She bought it for $4.5 million in June 2016, then turned around and sold it for $5,275,000 in August 2017. The second was a six-bedroom Tuscan-style home in the gated enclave of The Oaks, which she purchased in 2015 for $2.6 million. It went back on the market in June 2016 for $3.9 million, but she eventually let it go for $3.15 million.

Loser: Reba McEntire

Country crooner and TV star Reba McEntire is singing the blues. She took a loss on the Nashville-area Starstruck Farm, which she put on the market in 2016 after splitting from her husband and manager, Narvel Blackstock. It turns out, the developer who bought the property is going to subdivide it and likely make a killing. Although McEntire originally listed the 83-acre farm for $7.9 million, the developer wound up paying only $5 million.

The developer received approval from the Wilson County Planning Commission to carve up this once-regal expanse of land into smaller lots on which he’ll build 15 homes. Meanwhile, a 10-acre parcel including McEntire’s former spread was put back on the market for $2.95 million. And that’s a great deal, considering it includes a five-bedroom, Colonial-style mansion, as well as a tennis court, eight-car garage, five-stall barn, and equestrian center. It’s just too bad McEntire couldn’t take advantage of the land rush her property wound up generating.

Winner: Angelina Jolie

When she bought one of the most iconic estates in Hollywood, Angelina Jolie didn’t stray too far from the Hollywood-area home she shared with Brad Pitt. In June 2017, she snagged the Los Feliz estate once owned by legendary director Cecil B. DeMille for $24.5 million. Rumor has it that her children liked it for its green, rolling lawns. We’re guessing Jolie appreciated the compound’s Beaux Arts–style mansion, which was built in 1913 and fully (and painstakingly) restored.

The 2-acre property includes a graceful pool with arched fountains, a pool house and a studio house, rose gardens, and dramatic views from the Griffith Park Observatory to the Pacific Ocean.

Loser: Lil Wayne

It took two years, but hip-hop star Lil Wayne finally unloaded his 15,000-square-foot waterfront mansion in Miami Beach, FL, for $10 million—which is $1.6 million less than what he paid for it, and a full $8 million less than the price he listed it for in 2015.

The initial listing price reflected the improvements the 34-year-old rapper had made, including a rooftop skate park, a lagoon with live sharks, and a recording studio in the guesthouse. Those kinds of perks don’t come cheap. The 15,000-square-foot main house, which is located on La Gorce Island near Miami, has six bedrooms, and there are three additional bedrooms in the guesthouse. While it was ideal for the rapper’s lifestyle, it wasn’t every buyer’s cup of juice.

Winners: The ‘Little Couple’ stars

TLC’s “Little Couple”—also known as Dr. Jennifer Arnold and her husband, Bill Klein—proved hugely popular with our readers in 2017. The duo haven’t sold their Houston home yet, but they were successful in scoring a gorgeous new home in St. Petersburg, FL. They and their family also managed to dodge the paths of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and neither of their homes was damaged.

Now that the list price on the plantation-style house in Houston was recently sliced, it’s sure to sell. We’ll let you know when it hits the win column.

Loser: 50 Cent

Year-end breaking news: 50 Cent has cut the price of his mansion—again! Relisted just this week for $5 million, the albatross on the rapper’s real estate portfolio won’t let go. The mansion with 21 bedrooms, 25 bathrooms, and one stripper pole has spent the past decade on and off the market.

He’s now lowered the asking price from $14.5 million to a paltry $5 million. At one point, an interested party reportedly wanted to turn the property into an assisted-living facility. Imagine the fun seniors could have with a helipad, nine kitchens, an indoor pool, and disco! The deal was obviously never realized.

Perhaps it’s the $67,000 in monthly maintenance fees that’s keeping buyers at bay. Whatever the case, we’re hoping 2018 is Fiddy’s year. We’d hate to have to write about him again.
