The Heartbreak Series
A Short Overview of Mark’s Love-life Throughout the Years
Mark-centric AU

word count: 3.4k+ words
written in bullet form cus I'm a lazy shit
unbetaed so read at your own risk lmao
very self-indulgent; i.e., I just really wanted to hurt Mark... sorry Mark
suggestive themes. contains swearing and mentions of alcohol, drugs, sex, and cigarettes. reader discretion is advised!
—————————————————————————————
MARKHYUCK - “The timing wasn’t right”
Mark didn’t hate Donghyuck when they first met; he just didn’t get him
Where Mark was quiet, respectful, and peace-loving Donghyuck was loud, brash, and always spoke what was on his mind without any regard to anyone’s feelings
But somehow everyone loved Hyuck and Mark couldn’t understand why
Until he took the time to properly get to know him
That was when he realized how irresistibly magnetic he was
He was funny in a crass way
And was horribly honest (for better or for worse)
He knew the best ways to rile people up but somehow always smiled his way out of any fight
And god was his smile beautiful
He made you want to be his friend with a single look
But understanding this didn’t mean understanding his own feelings (especially as a supposedly “straight” Catholic boy), so nothing truly develops between Mark and Hyuck aside from a weirdly tense friendship
Where Mark was constantly craving his attention
And Hyuck was constantly torn between giving it to him or staying away for his own sanity
They move away from each other after high school and end up in different universities so they don’t hear from each other again until years later
MARKTEN - “the mentor”
Mark was in his first year of college when he realized he might not actually be straight after all
Being away from his Catholic parents and being exposed to other types of people really helped broaden his horizons
But meeting Ten was the turning point
They kissed during a game of Truth or Dare and the next thing Mark knew was that Ten was bringing him home to his bed
The morning after a confusing but terribly pleasurable fiasco, Ten was laughing at Mark's naivety because
(1) he hadn’t left like most guys do after a one night stand and;
(2) Mark was a cuddler when he was drunk off his ass
A literal octopus that pouted and whined and unconsciously sucked hickies unto exposed pieces of skin he could reach overnight
Mark tries to make sense of what happened
He thought that he and Ten HAD to be a thing now after what they had done (and they had done a lot)
Mark doesn’t really understand yet the concept of a one night stand
Ten explains to him that they don’t have to date or be exclusive (Ten just doesn’t roll that way)
They can just keep things casual between them
But poor Mark just looked so lost
So Ten takes him under his wing
Ten spends the next few months helping Mark explore his sexuality
They try different positions and different roles and even have a few threesomes with Ten’s more regular hookup: Johnny
Ten goes to great lengths to teach Mark about the wonders of hookup culture and one night stands and bars with sexy drunk men and sex full of passion but without any of the strings attached
He does all this before sending him off into the world like a chick leaving the nest
But Ten is still Mark’s favorite go-to for a long time
He just never had a chance with Ten
Not really
Especially not with Johnny always around
YUMARK - “the first heartbreak”
Yuta was Mark’s first boyfriend
He was known around the school as the problem-kid in Johnny’s year because he had skipped and flunked so many classes, has repeated his 3rd year twice
He was also notorious for his black-painted nails, devil-may-care attitude, and smoking on school grounds
He was the type of boy your parents warned you to stay away from
And he was also Ten’s go-to supply for happy pills and alcohol whenever he hosted parties at Johnny's frat house
Mark had known about him for a while
Had heard about him from all his seniors and even his batchmates
But they first meet at Ten’s graduation party when Mark was in his 2nd Year
By then Mark had been well-taught and fully immersed in hookup culture and he wanted to try his hand on someone different like Yuta
He let the older boy take him to his dorm room which smelled of weed and cheap beer
This isn't really what Mark would call attractive
But somehow spending the night with Yuta made Mark crave more than was deemed healthy
Even Ten wanted him to stay away from Yuta after hearing he had slept with him
But something about his aura made Mark fall to his knees
So they spend a few more nights together wrapped up in each other’s embrace
Yuta showed Mark things that Ten didn’t dare (and that was saying something as Ten was quite kinky himself)
Mark would probably never disclose to anyone the kind of shit he and Yuta regularly got around to doing
But one of their tamer endeavors, and one that they particularly enjoyed doing, was fucking raw while they were high or drunk
During this time their inhibitions would be completely thrown out the window and their fucking would often border on dangerous
Like fucking on the windowsill with the window wide open
Despite living on the 3rd floor
On one of those blurry nights where their vision was hazy with smoke and their throats burned from liquor, Mark blurted out that he had fallen in love with Yuta
Yuta didn't exactly reply
But he pulled him into a kiss and they didn’t speak of it again
They spent most of their free time together making out, fucking, or chilling at Yuta’s dorm with bongs and Japanese horror movies after that
They skipped classes to go on long drives to the countryside where they’d happily fuck in (and occasionally on) the car
Mark picked up smoking as a habit after having been given the task of carrying around Yuta’s lighter and lighting his cigarettes for him
The hefty metal had ‘N.YUTA’ messily carved into its body with a box cutter
And carrying it around made Mark feel useful, powerful, and gave him a sense of purpose
But he didn’t realize how dependent he was becoming or how much of his life he was slowly ruining
Mark lived in this toxic relationship believing Yuta needed him
Yuta told him that he needed him
When in reality it was actually Mark who needed him to feel alive
One day the relationship took a nosedive when Mark finds Yuta cheating on him with Winwin
Mark had never known what rage felt like until that moment
Mark cried angry tears
And he threw the metal light out the window, shattering the glass and causing Winwin to wince at the probable cost of the damage
Yuta tried to apologize but ultimately they decided that the relationship had already died months ago
They weren’t good or healthy for each other
And this was apparently just an incident waiting to happen
So they broke things off without another word
Mark has long since forgiven Yuta but only because it was in his nature to do so
But despite having uttered the words “I forgive you” he still feels the sting of heartache every time he sees Yuta and Winwin together
Because he couldn’t deny that Winwin made Yuta better than he ever could
RENMARK - “the one that got away”
Renjun was unique and enigmatic in many ways
He was smart, funny, artistic, and had a great personality, but was closed off and always kept his guard up
He made Mark want to use big words he otherwise would never use on a daily basis (like Abstentious, Deleterious, and Grandiose) simply because it made him smile
And Mark really loved his smile
Renjun would tease him for it, saying Mark probably didn't even know half the words he spewed out
But Mark could handle a few hundred blows to his ego if it meant Renjun would look at him for a few seconds longer
Following his relationship with Yuta, however, Mark just couldn’t find it in himself to ask the damn boy out
Renjun wasn’t an overly affectionate person and was stingy with skinship
But that made it all sweeter when he would lean against Mark while laughing his loud, full-bellied laugh at something Mark had said
Mark avoided smoking around Renjun because he had said once that he didn’t enjoy the smell
And he had associated cigars to his absent father
So regardless of the heavy withdrawals he experienced, Mark eventually quit smoking altogether because Renjun was less likely to recoil from a hug if he smelled more like sweat than if he smelled of burnt nicotine
Mark thought that maybe this was Renjun making him better (the same way Winwin had made Yuta better)
This made Mark think "Ah yes, he's the one"
But he wasn’t
He knew he wasn’t because of one night where Mark invited Renjun to his dorm to watch a movie over some beer and popcorn
They watched Love, Rosie, because Renjun wanted something cheesy to cringe to
They weren’t cringing though
Instead, they had the lights dimmed and the movie set to a low volume as they seriously talked about what could’ve happened if Rosie and Alex had just confessed to each other sooner
Hearing Renjun’s thoughts made Mark want to confess his love for him sooner too
And it was a little deeper into the night when Mark was on his 5th bottle and Renjun was on his 3rd that Mark found himself staring at Renjun’s side profile
He allowed himself this moment to trace the boy’s features
From the soft curve of his eyebrow down to his dainty ears and his perfectly carved out jaw that was hidden underneath a smooth expanse of unblemished skin
When Mark looked up again, Renjun was staring back
A moment passed where Mark’s heart felt like it was trying to jump out of his chest
And then he was leaning in and kissing Renjun on the lips
It wasn’t rough or passionate
It was slow and all-encompassing
All sighs and deep breathes before a gentle brush of parted lips
Renjun ended up on Mark’s lap, his eyebrows furrowed and his eyes closed like he was scared to know if this was real or not
But he knew it was real because he was holding unto Mark’s shoulders for dear life while Mark held him gently by the waist
Renjun sleeps over at Mark’s that night but they didn’t go beyond soft kisses and lips against smooth skin
Mark thought it was perfect
But when Mark wakes up the next day, Renjun had left him a note on his bedside table that said
“Please, let’s not talk about last night.”
So they don’t
Because when they meet again, Jaemin was all wide smiles and sparkling teeth
“I finally got the courage to ask Renjun out, and he said yes!”
Mark tries his best to forget about his crush on Renjun because he still wanted him around and because he couldn’t ruin his friendship with Jaemin
Even if he couldn’t rest his hand on his lower back or press gentle kisses on his forehead, having him around was enough
Mark tells himself that this is enough
Seeing Renjun happy, even if it was in the arms of another, is enough
Renjun’s presence and his friendship is enough
It was Mark that wasn’t enough
MARKJEN - “the rebound”
Mark wasn’t enough for Renjun and Jeno wasn’t enough for Jaemin even when they both gave their all for the other
Mark still avoided smoking around Renjun but without the boy teetering him down his withdrawals became too hard to resist
So he allowed himself a butt or two whenever he was out, drinking his sorrows away with Jeno
Jaemin and Renjun’s relationship became their common denominator and they decided, after multiple bottles of whiskey and gin, that they should fall into bed with one another
Sex with Jeno was surprisingly rough and fast-paced
There was no love there; just calloused hands on his body and teeth marking his tanned skin
And a battle for dominance which Jeno was surprisingly unwilling to relinquish
After having been emotionally used by Jaemin for years, something snapped in Jeno that made him refuse to bend over for anyone ever again
And Mark, after having Renjun take everything he could give, was happy to let Jeno take the reigns and give it to him harder than anyone else ever did
They didn’t fall in love with one another
They never shared gentle kisses or whispered sweet things to one another
But between them bloomed a strong friendship that helped patch the emptiness in their hearts and anchored them back to the ground all the way until graduation
MARKHYUCK (2) - “it was you all along”
Of all the people Mark thought he’d meet on the bus, he didn’t expect Donghyuck to drop unto his lap (quite literally) during his commute home
After suffering multiple heartaches throughout his years in college, Mark thought himself too old to believe in fate or soulmates
He instead believed in the art that is hooking up with strangers he would meet at bars (Ten liked to call it “going back to his roots”)
(Not that Ten had any right to speak when he and Johnny were getting hitched in two month’s time)
But meeting Hyuck had him thinking that maybe fate wasn’t all just a can of baloneys
Even after Donghyuck had quite literally fallen unto Mark’s lap, he still had the audacity to get mad at the older boy for sitting in that particular seat that he could’ve fallen into without incident
And Mark could barely believe his ears at the words
Donghyuck was still just as brash and rude as he was when they were in high school
But the mischief in his eyes was aged, more mature, and less childish
Clearly, he's seen and experienced things and grown up a little
Even if it wasn't obvious
Perhaps they shared a few experiences between them?
Mark didn't have time to ponder on this as he was completely stunned to silence
Mark got up from his seat and offered it to the angry boy, who wasn’t really all that angry to begin with because he didn't know what else to do
Donghyuck was hesitant but he eventually sat down on the chair that Mark offered
It was the wrong decision though as Mark decided to stay rooted to his spot, right beside the seat, a little rigid and causing Hyuck some intense discomfort
Mark stared down at Donghyuck who was getting red from all the attention
After barking out a “what?” Mark asked the first thing that was on his mind
“Do you want to get some coffee with me?”
Of course, Donghyuck was taken aback
But the guilt of having stolen Mark’s seat and STILL acting rude despite all of that made Hyuck turn away with a blush high on his cheeks and a silent “sure” falling from his lips
The silent 'sure' that made a smile blossom on Mark’s face so Donghyuck didn’t really mind (to him, Mark was still as handsome as he remembered)
They stop by the first Starbucks they see and sit down to catch up
Mark finds out that Hyuck had just started working at the same company he and Johnny worked at
Donghyuck was also scheduled to move into the same apartment complex Mark lived in–albeit on a higher floor
Something pleasant wriggled inside Mark at the knowledge that he could potentially be spending more time with Hyuck depending on what department he'll be working in
He was pretty fucking convinced that it was fate paying him back for all the years of heartache he endured
Mark quickly offers Donghyuck his assistance for the move but the younger of the two quickly rejects, telling him that he was plenty capable of doing it on his own
Mark wanted to argue further but he feared it would scare Hyuck away, so he let it be and simply settled with buying the boy jjajangmyeon to celebrate getting his own place
They quickly become close friends after that and Mark takes Hyuck as his + 1 for Johnny and Ten's wedding
Mark decides that slow and steady was a good move for him and Hyuck
But what he didn’t anticipate happening was Donghyuck meeting Jeno at the wedding and seemingly becoming infatuated with the other boy
Mark was starting to think that life was a bit too unfair to him as he watched Hyuck and Jeno become fast friends
He wanted to scream and retaliate
And tell Jeno to stick to his lane as he was already flirting with Jisung anyway
But instead, Mark runs away wanting to spare himself another heartache
And Hyuck was left to stand there, baffled by Mark's sudden inattention
LUMARK - “it’s not me, it’s him.”
In a desperate attempt to forget about Hyuck, Mark starts sleeping around once again and meets Lucas
He was a boy his age who he likened to a giant puppy
A puppy he definitely shouldn't have met at a gay bar because he was much too kind for his own good
Lucas is as sweet to him as life is cruel
On the first night they met, Lucas had bought him a drink, danced with him on the dance floor, patted his back while he hurled into a toilet from drinking too hard, and then let him cry on his shoulder after bringing him back home (supposedly to make out so more but that didn't exactly go as planned)
A week later and Mark finds himself getting picked up after work every single day
He walks him home, regularly takes him out for dinner dates, and even asks him if he wanted to move in after his lease was up
All within a month of dating him
Once again Mark finds himself thinking that maybe Lucas is the one even if he knows very well that he didn't deserve the giant puppy
He couldn’t deny, however, that the relationship fell short
Lucas was very kind about this and asked Mark if maybe there was someone else
Technically there wasn’t
But really... there was
Because Mark couldn’t get the thought of Donghyuck out of his head
Mark blurts this out one night but hastily explains to Lucas that nothing is going in between him and Hyuck
Mark could never cheat on anyone after suffering so badly with Yuta
And Mark hasn't really been out to see a lot of his friends since he met Lucas (mostly to avoid Hyuck) so he didn't really have the time to cheat on him
He will just try harder to love Lucas as much as Lucas loved him is what Mark says
But all Lucas says in response is “I am not Donghyuck, and that's okay."
MARKHYUCK (3) - “say yes”
After the relatively peaceful breakup with Lucas (who agrees that they should at least remain friends), Mark is once again alone in the world
Mark and Donghyuck still work for the same company and still go home to the same apartment complex
But where Mark used to have Lucas pick him up and walk him home, he now had no one to spare him the uncomfortable small talk that Hyuck has insisted they have
“What happened to Lucas?”
“We broke up.”
“Oh.”
“What happened to Jeno?”
“He’s with Jisung.”
“Oh!”
Mark was clearly taken aback as he knew Jeno used to flirt with Jisung long before he even met Hyuck
Shouldn’t having them hang out make Donghyuck uncomfortable?
Just like before, Mark was deeply baffled by Hyuck’s behavior
“Is he not crushing on Jisung anymore?”
“He’s literally head over heels in love with him.”
“Then why’d you let them hang out?”
An uncomfortable silence envelops them that causes Mark to look up at Hyuck properly
“... cus they’re dating?”
Mark was confused by this
It’s true he hadn’t been with his friends in a while, completely focusing on Lucas and avoiding Donghyuck
But he couldn’t have possibly missed something this big
“I thought you and Jeno were dating? You two became so close after the wedding.”
This time it was Donghyuck who gave Mark a confused look (although his was laced with anger)
“Mark Lee you can’t be that fucking stupid! I was asking him to help me ask you out.”
A whirlwind of emotions washed over Mark as he stared at the angry boy in front of him
He found it more and more difficult to do anything BUT stare at Donghyuck; he just had that effect on him
He stared so hard that he didn’t realize they had reached their stop and that Donghyuck was getting off the bus
Mark allowed his body to move on autopilot as he helplessly followed Hyuck into their apartment building
As if he was watching his life pass by like a movie, Mark watched as Hyuck pressed (slammed) the button for his floor for him and allowed himself to be pushed out of the elevator when he had reached his supposed destination
But instead of walking to his apartment, Mark turned back around to the closed elevator and stared some more
When the elevator doors opened again to reveal one of his startled neighbors, Mark suddenly snaps out of his trance-like stupor
What the fuck was he doing out here?
As the moments before suddenly rush back to him, Mark makes a move for the elevator (even getting slammed between the doors as it was closing) to go to Hyuck’s apartment
He bangs on the door loudly, not bothering to put down his suitcase that was undoubtedly scuffing the wooden door
Donghyuck flings the door open angrily to yell at Mark but is instead cut off by the older boy’s voice
“What do you mean ask me out?”
Hyuck stared at Mark in disbelief for a moment before attempting to close the door on his face
Much to his delight and Donghyuck's anger, Mark’s reflexes were much faster than either of them knew and he easily pushes himself into the room to simply ask again
“Hyuck, what do you mean ask me out? You were going to ask me out?”
“Yes you big oaf, I was going to ask you out! But your stupidly small brain encased in that big forehead of yours decided to date Lucas before I even had the chance.”
Mark bites back a smile but ultimately fails as he backs Haechan further into the apartment
“Ask me now.”
“What?”
“Ask me out now.”
At this point, Donghyuck looks downright murderous but Mark pays him no heed as he keeps smiling down at Hyuck
“I’m not asking you out anymore, Mark Lee.”
“Then I’ll ask you.”
“No you won’t, I’ll say no.”
“Go out with me, Donghyuck.”
“No!”
“Why not?”
“Because I don’t want to anymore!”
“Please?”
Hyuck stared up at the soft, pleading look on Mark’s face and feels himself crumble for a moment
So he turns away from temptation, a scowl deepening the lines on his face
Mark only follows his gaze and smiles back at Hyuck
He could see the younger boy's resolve breakaway but he also knew that Hyuck was a stubborn bitch
So finally, in a last-ditch attempt to get what he hoped will make them both happy, Mark decides to take Donghyuck’s hands in his and looks directly into his eyes
“I know I was a dick, Hyuck.. but please give me one more chance? Go out with me...”
Hyuck seemed like he was at a loss for words
The last of his dignity and his inflated ego had been chipped away and he felt like he was suddenly laid bare in front of Mark
Completely and 100% at his mercy
So instead of dignifying Mark’s begging with a response, he looks away once more and gives him a curt nod
The small affirmation, however, lights up Mark’s face and he hurriedly throws his arms around Hyuck and pulls him into a tight hug before spinning him around once (completely ignoring the shrieking it caused)
When Mark pulls away, Donghyuck's face is flushed red and he's scowling at him once more
But that didn’t dim Mark's smile at all
Instead, he asks Hyuck if he could kiss him
And Donghyuck, of course, says yes

Note
Like, I love Miles Edgeworth, but he's overshadowing literally everyone else. Like he's not overrated since he actual holds up to his love, but damn, there are so many fics on him and his story from the og trilogy only. Miles has grown up beyond it and I love him for it since it makes him three dimensional.
Ok, you wanna know what greatly amuses me about you mentioning how people only pay attention to him and his story from the og trilogy only?
Edgeworth plays an important role in 4 of the 5 cases in the original game (3 of 4 if you really hate RFTA and want to exclude it from your mind. Feel free to do so but you’ll be hella frustrated when you play AJ. Unless you liked Ema.)
He only appears in 1 of the four cases in JFA and is mentioned in 2 and cameos in 1. If you don’t count the cameo, which I do, that only adds up to 1 case. Comparatively a small role, but he has a big impact on Franziska’s motivations and is the reason she wants to crush Phoenix so badly. Points to Takumi for not doing a generic “avenge my father” plot. Respect him (and Franziska) for that. He does play an extremely important role in the one case he appears in, so don’t think I’m trying to downplay him or anything.
Edgeworth is majorly absent in the third game. He prosecutes in only one case and that’s his annoying 20 year old self. He comes back in the fifth case to fill in for the defense and does play a hand in Iris and Dahlia switching places. Had it not been for that earthquake, he wouldn’t have freaked out and lost sight of Iris in the first place. He doesn’t do a whole lot else after that though.
I say this because if you think about it, Edgeworth is only in 7 of the original 14 cases if you count physical appearances only (6 out of 13 in the OG trilogy). While I won’t argue that Edgeworth isn’t important in the cases he’s in because he is totally, I will argue that it does feel odd how the focus is on him so much of the time.
And the thing is, I can see how people would argue how Edgeworth is the central character in the first game. Edgeworth is the character we see grow throughout the course of the game. We learn the most about him than any other character and the events of the game revolve around him (Turnabout Goodbyes, the DL-6 incident, etc) more than other characters besides Maya who shares a connection with him as they both lost parents to the DL-6 incident (how have those two not had more interactions, honestly?) and loses her sister in the second case.
I would argue however, that Edgeworth isn’t the character at the center of the second game although we do see him mentioned in conversations by Franziska and Phoenix. I don’t know why people will acknowledge his “Miles Edgeworth chooses death” note but absolutely refuse to acknowledge how awful of a move that was. The reason being is that it was cryptically worded and anybody reading it would think he killed himself which Franziska and Phoenix did, while Gumshoe was the only one who knew what really happened. I know what the note actually meant (i.e. the death of the prosecutor Edgeworth once was) but still, it was poorly worded.
In actuality, Phoenix is the protagonist and central character of the second game. He’s the one who goes through the most growth as we see him face a huge moral dilemma in the fourth case where he has to choose between saving his friend or sending a truly guilty man to prison. It’s absolutely interesting to see him in conflict with the character he was up to that point (someone who believed his client was genuinely innocent) and it’s something I think needs to happen more often. By that I mean, defending truly guilty defendants. While I don’t think they should be like Matt Engarde necessarily, it would be interesting to see more truly guilty defendants. (I know there’s one in DGS but not everyone has played that one so I won’t spoil.)
As for the third game, it’s pretty obvious who the main protagonist in that game is. It’s the Fey Clan obviously. Specifically, we learn more about Mia Fey, Phoenix’s mentor, through getting to play as her during the tutorial case and the other tutorial case both of which are short but help us get to know Phoenix’s wise and calm mentor. We see her during her first two cases and even get to witness her taking down Dahlia Hawthorne in an amazingly cool manner (by asking her to prove her innocence by taking Phoenix’s cold medicine which she poisoned). We also see her during her first case which was mentioned in Turnabout Memories and was said to traumatize her so badly that she felt like she was never going to step into court again. Since her opponent, Bratworth, had never lost a case before Turnabout Sisters, we know that the case won’t end well. But even so, it’s what actually happens that makes the case so gutwrenching. Seeing Terry Fawles kill himself on the stand to protect his former girlfriend who was the true killer makes for a saddening end. Regardless of what you think of him as a character, seeing Mia so distraught over not being able to prevent Fawles’ death tugs at your heartstrings.
What’s even worse is that six months later, she loses her boyfriend when he gets poisoned by Dahlia. Which does raise an interesting question: did she see the case against Wright and take it because she saw Dahlia mentioned in the case files and thought she might be connected to it? It’s likely, seeing as she brought the article talking about Diego’s poisoning with her but who knows? Either way, seeing her so determined to take Dahlia down that she’s willing to have her badge revoked is sincerely cool to watch.
And even in the present day case that Dahlia appears in, Bridge to the Turnabout, Mia doesn’t stop being rivals with Dahlia. When Maya channels Mia to ask her what she should do after Dahlia attacks her, Mia advises her to lock herself up in the Sacred Cavern in the Inner Temple and channel Dahlia in order to protect herself. It’s an extremely risky move on Mia’s part and had Dahlia not been so stubborn in seeing Maya’s corpse for herself without considering that she might be channeling her, Maya could have died of hypothermia in there (which isn’t something I had considered until the last year or so). Still, it works out in the end and Iris and Dahlia-in-Maya’s-body switch places during the second investigation period. Mia then proceeds to exorcise Dahlia out of Maya’s body with Phoenix’s help:
Dahlia: …Grr…Mmm…Nnnn… Grrr… Ahh! M… M… Mia F… F… Fey Mia Fey! Mia Fey! MIA FEEEEY! You… You… spinster!! I was supposed to kill Maya Fey like I swore I would! And if only you had gotten this spiky-haired jerk the guilty verdict… …I wouldn’t have been hanged to death!
Mia: …… True.
Dahlia: …!
Mia: But I think you finally understand, Dahlia Hawthorne. …You will never defeat me.
Dahlia: Wh-What…!? What did you say!?
Mia: Whether you’re alive, dead, or somewhere in between, you will never defeat me. As long as I’m around, you’re destined to lose for all of eternity!
Dahlia: Grrr… Grrrr… Grrrrr…
Phoenix: …I remember what you said earlier in the trial. You said there was no way we could punish you… …because you were already dead.
Dahlia: What about it!?
Phoenix: Then you said… “Even when the body dies, the spirit, the ego, it lives on… forever.”
Mia: …That’s very true, Dahlia. And that’s exactly the punishment you’ll never be able to escape from.
Dahlia: …!
Mia: For all of eternity, you’ll have to remain as Dahlia Hawthorne. A miserable, pathetic, weak creature who can never win at anything… And for you, there is no escape from that. No hope of freedom. Since the day you were executed… …the narrow bridge that once stretched out in front of you has burnt to a crisp!
This causes Dahlia to freak out and pop out of Maya’s body with a extremely loud scream. It’s extremely chilling and awesome at the same time.
One thing that stands out though, is that defeating Dahlia never stops being Mia’s personal victory as Godot mentions later on.
Godot: The woman who had spiked my scalding hot coffee… Dahlia Hawthorne! Ha…! Good ol’ Mia. She didn’t let me down. She got her revenge before she checked out. In the end… There wasn’t anyone waiting for me when I woke up.
In a way, the way that Mia Fey and Diego Armando go about taking revenge against Dahlia serves an interesting contrast to each other. Mia, although angry at Dahlia for sure, never let her anger consume her when trying to take her revenge on Dahlia. The only thing that Mia sought out to do was to make sure that she received justice for her crimes and upon finally getting Dahlia convicted of murder, moved on with her life. Mia even took Phoenix under her wing, despite his past connection to Dahlia. Even though he really had nothing to do with her crimes and even was supposed to be one of her victims, you can’t help but admire her for that.
On the other hand, Diego Armando never let his hatred of Dahlia Hawthorne go. Even after waking up from his coma and realizing that Mia had gotten revenge for him and got her sentenced to death. He was so blinded by hatred that upon encountering her at the Inner Temple Garden, he stabbed her with the cane sword, killing Misty Fey in the process. And unlike Mia, Diego hated Phoenix and even blamed him for Mia’s death. There’s also a line that suggests that he knew that Phoenix was the one that inadvertently helped Dahlia hide the bottle necklace containing the poison:
Godot: …… I never liked you. Six years ago… …you helped the woman who put me to sleep by hiding her bottle of poison.
It’s an interesting line, indeed, and implies that Diego’s hatred of Phoenix went beyond Mia’s murder. Because Phoenix “hid” the bottle of poison, Dahlia was never able to be caught for Diego’s poisoning and thus escaped justice. In summary, Mia was able to move on with her life after Dahlia got caught while Diego wasn’t which ended up being his downfall.
I can also see how some people might make a case for Maya going through development of her own throughout Trials and Tribulations. During the second and third case, we see her express doubts about her own abilities as a spirit medium and it’s implied that she’s still shaken up by the murder in Kurain Village to the point that she hasn’t even returned to the village in a while:
Maya: Well, I’m kind of taking a break… I’m having a bit of trouble right now, you know?
Phoenix: (Last year’s incident must still be on her mind… I haven’t seen Maya train at all since then. I think Mia said it’s because Maya’s “at a loss these days”…)
It’s an interesting line, and is definitely one that people seem to overlook while playing through the game. Despite her lack of training however, Maya is still able to channel Mia during the last portion of the Stolen Turnabout. The conversation the two of them have reveals that Maya is going through a dilemma currently.
Mia: I’m just joking, Phoenix. Don’t take everything so seriously. But on the other hand, Maya… She seems kind of lost these days.
Phoenix: You mean about becoming the Master of the Kurain Channeling School?
Mia: Becoming the Master… means saying goodbye to our mother.
Phoenix: You mean Misty Fey…?
Mia: …Watch over her, will you Phoenix?
One thing I find interesting though, is that Maya’s dilemma about becoming the Master isn’t overly prevalent in dialogue. Sure it’s a part of what she goes through over the course of the game but it doesn’t take a huge focus. It’s certainly unique. Here’s one such example in Recipe for Turnabout
Armstrong: You ‘ave la perfect face for a waitress, you know.
Maya: Um, thanks. I guess if things don’t work out someday, then maybe I’ll be back.
Phoenix: (What things? Is she talking about her being a spirit medium…?)
I honestly appreciate it for it’s subtlety; little character moments like this one, is what adds to the replay value of the games. True, you can just breeze through them, but taking the time to present random things to people can also reveal tons of interesting dialogue that can reveal more about the characters than if you were to do a regular playthrough and do what you need to do to progress further through the case.
All of this culminates in the last case when Maya goes to Hazakura Temple with Pearl and Phoenix to do some training which as mentioned before, she hasn’t really done much of since the Kurain Channeling incident. And unfortunately for her, it ends in disaster with her nearly being murdered by the ghost of her cousin, Dahlia and also witnessing Godot stab the spirit to death which kills her mother in the process.
When we first see Maya in the last trial portion of Bridge to the Turnabout, she’s more traumatized than we’ve ever seen her. And through this line, we get to see how she feels about the Kurain Channeling Technique in her current situation:
Maya: … I… I’m frightened. The Fey clan… I don’t want any more to do with it.
Now, let’s think about what this line means. Maya has dealt with a horrible amount of tragedy in her young life due to her heritage. She lost her mother, her sister left the village partly because she didn’t want to feud with Maya over the title of Master; her aunt plotted to have her convicted for murder and later tried to murder her through her beloved cousin, Pearl; and the one time that she decides to start training again, another tragedy occurs. Her mother was killed right in front of her by a man who was blinded by hatred towards the spirit possessing her body. It’s hard not to see why Maya would not want anything to do with her heritage after all the grief it caused her, so then, why does Maya decide to inherit the title of Master anyway?
Well, here’s the deal: The Fey Clan is extremely screwed up and has caused many of its members grief over the past two years. It’s no secret that the branch family has plotted against the main family before and has done so throughout its history:
Bikini: There is only one heir to the title of “Master” at any time, and it’s usually the eldest. That child becomes the new Master of Kurain, and her daughters, the main family. All other mediums become branch family members, with no hope of controlling the clan. That’s why nothing has changed throughout the history of the clan… Branch families always have and always will plot to erase those of the main family line.
However, Pearl doesn’t hold any sort of resentment towards Maya despite her being the heir to the title of Master. In fact, Pearl adores Maya and vice versa. The only reason she ever went with Morgan’s plan was because she thought by “It’s for the good of the Fey Clan” that her mother meant that her plan would benefit Maya and Pearl both. Maya similarly doesn’t hold any resentment towards Pearl  when she tries to blame herself for the death of Maya’s mother.
If you think about it, the fact that Maya stays and decides to become Master could also considered to be not only a result of her strength but a result of her deciding to fix the screwed up legacy of the Fey clan. As two of the people hurt most by the rivalry between the main family and the branch family, Maya and Pearl could work together to fix their family’s screwed up background and restore the Fey clan to its former glory. That’s the way I see it anyway.
Sorry for my long rant there, the Fey clan is very interesting to me. Honestly though, I’d argue that Edgeworth is more like a tritagonist. He’s extremely important at first but he becomes relatively less important over the course of the trilogy to the point that he’s only ever in one case in his present day form in the last part.
Maya is more or less the deutragonist of the games. She’s in 10 of the 14 cases in the trilogy and 6 of those cases (1-2, 1-4, 2-2, 2-4, 3-2, and 3-5) have her involved majorly in the plot whether it be her being accused of murder, dealing with her and her family history, or kidnapped (in which we get to control her too!). While she isn’t involved in the plots of 1-3 or 2-3 directly, she is the person who convinces Phoenix to take both cases and she even helps Phoenix out in the latter by raising the question of where Max’s bust is located which helps him catch Acro as the true murderer.
However, despite Maya’s overall importance to the trilogy, what stops her from being the main protagonist like Phoenix is that we don’t get to go into her head very often. We see Phoenix react to the situations around him, we get to see his thoughts while dealing with crazy witnesses and when he’s having a difficult time trying to prove something in court. Through this, we get to know Phoenix and in a sense, feel like we can connect with him. Even Edgeworth gets to be played during the first investigation and trial day of Bridge to the Turnabout where like Phoenix, we get to go inside his head and see how he thinks and how he feels about what’s going on around him.
With Maya, the time that we do get to control her in 2-4 is extremely short and doesn’t exactly allow us to get into her head. That’s not a point against her however as we do see her react to what’s going on when we aren’t in control of her. It makes sense that it would be extremely short though, as Maya is currently kidnapped when we do control her and the areas you can have her go aren’t very numerous.
Still as much as I argue that Phoenix fits the central character and protagonist mold more than Edgeworth and Maya do, I believe that all three characters are important in their own unique ways.

Welcome to the secondary aftermath
Hi! I thought a good place to start would be to make an introduction post to explain what the point of this blog is.
So first off, what is Secondary Aftermath?
Secondary aftermath is the name of the TV show I’m currently writing. I don’t know what’s going to happen with it - it may sit on my laptop for the rest of time, it may get picked up and actually put into production, I could end up doing it myself, I don’t know.
The title is a work in progress (and bonus points if you get the reference) but for now I’m happy with it. I’ve got 4 seasons mapped out so far but I’m confident I can go further, currently I’m finishing writing season 1 but I keep getting sidetracked by designing characters and writing parts of the later seasons that I’m SUPER excited for. I also have a prequel series surrounding Aliana’s time in Denver and everything that happened before she met the gang that sits in my brain, constantly knocking on the walls to remind me I need to write it. It’s fun.
I made this blog because I’m going stir crazy having this entire world inside my head with nobody to share it with. I realise nobody might even seen this account but at least I know it’s out there this way.
What’s the plot?
...So here’s the thing. I suck at descriptions. Really, really suck at descriptions. Here’s the short version:
Superpowers, robots, clones, bowling for soup, lgbt+ representation, My Chemical Romance and all the 2000’s alternative music you can take. That’s the best I can offer without making it over complicated. I’ll do a more detailed description below for season 1 but I can’t promise it’ll be great.
“Felix, Kurt, Rory and Vince are 4 people with different superpowers (I’m gonna do a detailed character post soon) who live in a gas station. The gas station is outside the town Felix and Kurt used to live in before it got burnt and all the residents were kidnapped 6 years ago. When Felix goes back to the town to get an important part for the car, they find Kayla cowering as she hides from the very people that took Felix’s town. After years of trying to find the people that committed the crime, they finally have a lead to chase - except that lead is now chasing them.
The group leave the station and head north, where they encounter the straight talking Aliana and her motorbike. After listening to Aliana explain that she can help them stop the bad guys and discovering she is also a special like the rest of the group, they agree to go with her to another abandoned town where Angus is waiting for them.
Together they make plans to stop the evil Planetary Inc. (more bonus points for getting the reference) and release all the captured citizens of various towns in the area whilst keeping Kayla safe, but it won’t be that simple. When the right hand man of Planetary’s leader shows up wanting to help, the group discover more about the company’s history in a day than they had in 6 years and trust is called into question.”
I like to keep a lot of things hidden so that’s a pretty vague description but I think it covers the basics of season 1. I might update it in future idk.
Who are the characters?
So like I said, I’ll do a detailed characters post soon where I give more information about each individual but for now I offer you some blurbs -
Felix
Felix can only be described as a non-binary sweetheart. They deserve the world and I’ll fight anyone that fucks with them. Their powers are that they can conjure force fields and play music as loud as possible. They feel responsible for what happened to the town and have spent the last 6 years trying to make it right, with no luck. They’re a total worry wart. The kind of person who would start vibrating if they found out someone they cared about was anything less than 100% happy. They act as the leader of the group but they’re not the firm type. Mcr stan if I ever saw one.
Kurt/K
Felix’s best friend, they’re inseparable. He also feels responsible for what happened but he’s better at hiding it. Kurt is the voice of reason within the group, when everyone else wants to act first and think later, he’s the one that sets them straight. His power is that he can conjure elements from his hands and control the weather within the area he’s located. Kurt’s the friend you go to when you’ve had a day from hell and just need someone to sit and listen to you without any interruption or judgement.
Rory
Imagine if you could capture chaos in a jar and eat it. That’s Rory. He used to be a doctor before he joined Felix and Kurt at the station which is handy because his powers are he can heal anything and see places in real time within his head. Rory is Vince’s boyfriend and it seems like they never stop arguing but god help you if you say something rude about one of them in the presence in the other. Rory seems tough but he’s seen some shit and been through some shit, it’s what got him and Vince bonding at first. The last person you’d expect to be giving sage advice but he’s actually really good at it. Rory’s brought some unsavoury characters to the station in the past but the group never hold it against him.
Vince/Vinnie
The only reason Rory hasn’t died yet. Vince is seen as “the strong one” of the group, he’s actually a big softie and a good man but that’s exactly why he’s the last person you’d want to piss off. His power is he can look into people’s memories to find the information he needs. Vince lost his daughter and her mother a year before finding the station after an experiment conducted by Planetary went horribly wrong, despite all that, he’s in good spirits and likes to look on the bright side of life.
Aliana
She’ll buy you dinner then poison your wine. Aliana is a no-nonsense, speak her mind kind of gal. Her power is that she can turn invisible which has helped her a lot when hiding from Planetary Inc. in the past. She’s “married” to Angus and lives in an abandoned town, courtesy of Planetary, a couple hours from the Station. Aliana briefly worked for Planetary at a pop-up research facility in Denver and struck up a good friendship with Phoenix before it all went pear shaped and she was forced to flee back home, where she found her own town abandoned.
Angus
We need to put bells on his ankles because you barely notice he’s in the room until he speaks. Angus prefers to observe than participate, he keeps to himself and doesn’t judge you on anything you share with him. He’s just full of wisdom. His power is that he can spawn in multiple places, giving him eyes and ears everywhere. Angus can be found caring for Kayla when the others are out dealing with Planetary, he prefers to deal with the logical side of things rather than the physical side.
Kayla
She literally didn’t ask for any of this but Nolan just had to bring a kid into this didn’t he. Ugh. Kayla is an absolute sweetheart who doesn’t really know what’s happening, she just knows the bad men are after her. Kayla was artificially born within the facility 4 years ago, but they had managed to rapidly speed up her aging so she was closer to the age at which children gain their powers. Kayla was the first success I.e the first person to be given powers without being born into them. Her power is that she can start and stop time but for obvious reasons, she’s not having the best time controlling them yet.
(The)Phoenix
He’s made some big mistakes in the past but he’s trying to turn himself around and regain Aliana’s friendship. He’s Nolan’s right hand man and ex-boyfriend, he spent many years dedicated to the cause but after Nolan’s experiment killed Vince’s town and they broke up, things went downhill. Phoenix is a tricky one, you’re never really sure what side he’s on and even when you think you know, there’s always room for doubt. He rarely makes sense and likes to keep you on your toes by never telling you the whole story. He originally never had powers but after Kayla, they found the right formula and he was able to acquire his own. His power is that he’s able to manipulate the minds of others to make them say and do whatever he wants them to, which is why you can never fully trust him.
Nolan
Tumblr media
This is all I’m willing to say on the matter.
Lindsey
I love her. I love her so much. Lindsey is a bass player in Felix’s favourite band who also coincidentally met Aliana when she was flying into Denver and became her best friend. Lindsey, along with her brother Tiger, helped Aliana and Phoenix in solving the mystery surrounding Planetary Inc. when Aliana worked for them. After Aliana was forced to leave without saying goodbye, Lindsey and Tiger were captured by Planetary but escaped after they were given powers of their own and Lindsey acquired her robot arm. Lindsey lost her left arm after a cockup on Planetary’s part during testing and was quickly given a robotic prosthetic arm by the facility in Denver. Her power is similar to Aliana’s, by request, she can camouflage to anything.
Tiger
On this show we support and cover trans individuals. Tiger is ftm and has cool lilac hair. As stated above, he helped the group when Aliana was in Denver and became good friends with her like his sister. Tiger plays lead guitar in the band with Lindsey and is often found with a book or a knife, it depends on the day. He’s a total sweetheart that would do anything for almost anyone if they asked. Tiger’s power is that he can sprout wings and fly, he can also produce balls of energy that reaaaally pack a punch.
The other stuff
I can’t really think of what else to say about the show? I’ve got drawings of the characters that I’ll definitely post, they’re not amazing in terms of detail but they’re simple enough that my level of talent can manage it and they look nice. I don’t actually expect anyone to pay attention to this account but if anyone wants to know more or has questions, shoot. I’ll be using the hashtag ‘#Release the secondary aftermath’ on all my posts (unless I think of a better one, in which case I’ll update this) so you can find everything there
