been spending my time watching fangs of fortune since i actually have time and. man.
it's such a potent picture of tragedy, isn't it? watching it gives me that same feeling desolation that i get when i read a particular type of poem. not quite grief, but the show is so heavy with grief. each case might be "solved" but there is only bittersweetness, if that, in it. all demon love stories seem doomed for tragedy - ran yi and miss qi, the human and the demon, cheng huang and the original baize goddess, trapped in wooden dolls, fei and qing geng, freedom at a meaningless cost. the focus on the destruction of the core, the desire for li lun to destroy zhu yan's core...
it's bleak. the show does a great job of uplifting the mood with bits of humor and warmth, but there's no denying that you know that tragedy is always, always lurking around the corner.
#star stumbles#fangs of fortune#大梦归离#cdrama#this might have made no sense but whatever <3#i've watched 13 episodes so far very good progress for me personally#li lun is causing drama for no reason but i know he's not the only one#since there's also the masked man/woman (who...?)#lots of pain and suffering is just around the corner don't worrrry#also the little family they're building is so cute#bai jiu definitely has some things going on#maybe his mom was not killed by a demon but something else happened there?

finally getting around to watching 13's run in full (just finished rewatching s11, about to start s12) in preparation for the 60th anniversary and i have thoughts. so here's a rambling post to try and sum them up cohesively:
i know i'm not the only one who feels that chibnall's run feels a bit disconnected. part of that was no doubt intentional (new doctor, new showrunner, new start) but it feels a little too disconnected. in fact it almost feels like a spin-off rather than the main series.
Jodie's a good actress, but i'm not entirely sold on 13's personality. one thing about New Who is that you can pretty logically understand the progression of the the Doctor's personalities throughout the various series & regenerations, but 13 feels just a tad off. after 12's run it makes sense that 13 would be lighter & happier, but the way she's written makes it feel more like a regression than a progression. the narrative often makes her come off a over-excitable and less competent, partly because of chibnall's wish to have an unconnected series. i like that we got introductions to the bigger universe of DW instead of the same antagonists over and over, but having 13 constantly not recognizing or not being able to figure things out on her own felt almost condescending.
i like all the companions in theory (except Dan since i haven't seen s13 yet). on paper, they're all very distinct from each other, which was a concern i had since previous companions sometimes felt like different shades of the same color. in practice, i don't think they're developed enough individually for me to form strong feelings about any of them. i feel like the writers took a shortcut expecting viewers to automatically favor the companions and then didn't build enough of a bridge to get me to actually like them as characters.
so far the pacing of nearly every episode also feels off. i'm not as familiar with chibnall's writing signatures as i am with Davies or Moffat, but if i was just basing it off of s11 & s12, i'd say he struggles with self-contained one episode stories. doctor who has always offered a lot of social commentary, but sometimes i think he tries to pack in too many layers that the overall message gets muddled. most episode feel like the intro drags and the ending is rushed. there is an issue with keeping an appropriate level of tension throughout.
this is a personal preference, but i also didn't like the level of connectivity/foreshadowing we got in s11. the stenza get mentioned in s11e1 and e2, and then dropped until e10. when Tim Shaw pops up again in the finale, it feels less like the return of a major antagonist and more like they just didn't have anyone else to bring in. intentionally or not, the narrative feels like it blames 13 for Tim Shaw's actions. the doctor's lack of follow-through is a fair criticism of their past actions that has been rightly levied against them before, but in this case it felt like it came from nowhere.
i only got halfway through s12 the first time. i'm hopeful that it'll feel more cohesive once i watch the entirety, and i've heard good things about s13, so i'm excited about that.
#this is not an anti post#i have things i love about 13's run too#just trying to get my feelings straight#doctor who#saladrants

I've seen a few comments that Mon Mothma's plotline doesn't seem to be progressing very far and she does not seem to have achieved anything whilst other characters have.
I believe that stagnation is the point. Of the three main threads, Cassian is actively working against the system from the outside, Luthen is playing on both sides, and Mon Mothma is trying to work within the system to bring the Empire down/champion rebel causes. We see both Cassian and Luthen achieve success to varying degrees, largely due to willingness to compromise and sacrifice.
Thus far Mon Mothma has been unwilling to do so and thus her attempts to progress have been stymied. I suspect in the final two episodes we will see her come to the inevitable realisation that it is not possible to bring down a broken and a corrupt system by working within its boundaries. A price must be paid.

"House of the Dragon" has actually been pretty good but guys, we need to talk about Aemond.
Just fucking look at him. Look at this anime villain, Sephiroth-looking motherfucker. This dude is a fucking cartoon it's amazing. I cannot picture this guy doing anything but sitting in a castle smugly drinking wine whilst his enemies are tortured in his dungeons. I don't believe this actor is even wearing a wig, he just showed up to set one day, cheekbones designed by Tetsuya Nomura himself and the directors said "we gotta get this weirdo on our show."

I know Tumblr has largely become anti-MCU because Disney bad, Marvel bad, corporations churning out cookie cutter movies bad etc etc but please, PLEASE watch Ms. Marvel.
I say this as a 30-something cishet white man who has no real reference point for its authenticity but it is just such a wonderful family story. It's a rare comic book property where not only do the powers take a backseat to the civilian lives of the characters, but it is better for it. Yes, they diverge from Kamala's Inhuman origins in the comics but they trade it in for something imo much more personal. It touches on how damaging partition was and the generational trauma it left behind as well as the experiences of modern Muslims living in America.
Even besides that it just feels so fresh and entertaining and has a great cast of characters and the first few episodes exude Edgar Wright/Scott Pilgrim energy in the best way.
It's a great show and deserves your time.

I've been taged by @synthsays and @bg-sparrow!
1. How many times would you guess you watched the first back to the future movie?
Very few, comparatively. I’d be surprised if it was more than five!
2. Did you get any sweet bttf merch? If so, what!
My dear friend @clara-is-brave got me the Time Travel Memories Tin for Christmas (which I’m so excited about)!
3. How many cans of Pepsi Free did you chug this year?
I had a ton of Diet Pepsi while I was working, but it was the caffeinated version. I can’t stand coffee, so I’d have that in the mornings. Call it a couple hundred cans. :/
4. What was a favorite bttf fanfic you read this year?
This is so hard! But I have to go with @bg-sparrow’s Time Circuits Series and @penny-anna’s little stuff (the sweet and the sour). In the first, BG has managed to create an OC who fits seamlessly into the BTTF universe and is the only non-Jennifer person I’ve managed to picture Marty with. In the second, Linda discovers the truth about Calvin Klein and that her history has been drastically altered. A wonderful piece about a character I’ve never centered a fic around!
5. A favorite bttf fanart you saw this year? (please give us a link, not a screencap/repost!)
I have to say my absolute favorite is a piece @daryfromthefuture did for me of one of my OCs for a Discord server Secret Santa. (Her name's Agatha Petersen, she's Marlene's wife, and she was rescued from an early demise in 1921! Her appearances thus far have been limited to McFly July—Chapters 20 and 27, and she was first mentioned in 18!
Dary also did this one of Marty and Jennifer on their wedding day, which I also prompted actually.
I also discovered this older one by @ursaspecter! It’s Marty, Doc, Jennifer, and Clara in the 90s!
6. Did you create any bttf fanart or fanfic? If you did, what one(s) are you proudest of?
I’ve posted seven fics to AO3 this year, and I have a few that are in progress but not posted! It’s hard to pick which one I’m proudest of, but I’d say my royalty AU A Royal Doctober (presently in progress), the fourth part in my post-movie series The Summer of '89, and my multimedia piece r/ThePinheads: Guys, Marty McFLy really *is* a time traveller!!! That one is a fake subreddit page!
7. How many times were you late for school this year?
Unbelievably—given that I graduated college eleven years ago—once or twice. (I was taking a zoom class.)
8. Did you watch any other movies/tv shows with BTTF actors in them?
I don’t think so. I saw Christopher Lloyd in NCIS, but that was like three years ago. (I watched that episode with my dad on a lark, and I really enjoyed it.)
9. Was there a memorable moment you heard a Huey Lewis song this year?
On my way to work in the morning I heard “The Power of Love” and completely rocked out.
10. How many times did you fall down this year?
Not sure. Maybe once or twice.
11. Did you get to see BTTF: The Musical? What was your experience like!
No. *cries*
12. How many times did your mom retell the story of how she and your father met?
Can’t have been more than once or twice. (Not only have they not been together since I was an infant, he died when I was 15. I still know the story—they met through mutual friends in high school, then fell out of touch for like fifteen years before having a whirlwind romance during which I came along.)
13. If you could describe your year in a BTTF quote, which one would it be?
This was actually the hardest one! Honestly, not to be too negative, but I feel like “What in the name of Sir Isaac H. Newton happened here?” It’s been unrelenting shit, but there’s been some good stuff too. I’ve written more than I have in years, which is a really good thing! For that, you can also say, “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything!”
14. ⚡️LIGHTNING ROUND⚡️ Did you get to: go on any trains, skate on a skateboard, ride a horse, drive a Delorean, run in the rain, go to a dance, hang up a clock, play the guitar, pull an all-nighter, read science fiction, or drive thru Burger King this year?
Hang up a clock, pull all-nighters, and read science fiction.
15. Your future is whatever you make it! So what are you going to make of this coming year?
I honestly don’t know. I’m in an awkward place to say the least. I’m turning 35 tomorrow, and my life isn’t at all what I’d hope it’d be at that age. I have no girlfriend, no job, and very little hope. My mom has cancer. So I have a huge sinking feeling about the whole year.
If there’s a cause for hope, it’s that zoom class I mentioned. I know am certified as what’s called a full-stack web developer, which means I can build websites. I’m hoping that’s gonna get me a decent job. But ngl, things are really scary right now.
I don’t want to end on a negative note, though, so I’m gonna say—I’m gonna get a good job, my mom’s gonna heal, and I’m gonna start and complete fanfics and maybe even original writing! For the latter, my record this year actually proves that I can!
BTTF Year-End Tag Game!

Hey I'm Fred's fourth daddy anon! I sent that to you, and what felt like five minutes later you came in with that gorgeous sketch. Do you have any art tips or videos that have taught you cause I've been stuck draw trying to draw anything not resembling a lump for two years. Also yeah it was whirlwind episode, f*ck Rose, and Fred should have turned that loon in.
Hey FD Anon, thanks so much! I don’t draw a lot of “horror” art so I’m really happy with it’s progress so far!
While I do agree with you that Rose is The Worst, I think she added in an interesting dynamic and I’d be happy if she became a recurring character in the Scooby mythos at large. As for Fred not turning his dad in... I agree, but I also understand why he didn’t.
The episode went out of it’s way to show off how frightening and weird he is but Fred made it very clear that when he wasn’t wearing the mask he was a good parent, and that all of his crimes were shown as nonviolent. He didn’t seem to steal anything (unless I missed that line?) he just liked messing with people by confusing them.
As for art tips, I... honestly never expected anybody to ask for advice from me? That’s super flattering wow.
Okay, so I’m still pretty much a novice, but lemme give you some of my best tips and tricks:
1) Notice how my last sketch had a grey background? This wasn’t just for that sketch, this is how I use ALL of my digital canvases. I do this because the grey causes less strain to my eyes, and allows me to work longer and more easily. Being so close to a screen, especially a blue or white one, can make it harder to work for long periods of time.
2) If you want to do digital art, you need to learn “traditional art” (pencil and paper) first. It makes transitioning to digital more easy and it’s pretty much what any art teacher would recommend, for good reason.
3) Using one method of art not only limits you, but stops you from learning other techniques which can be incorporated into what you typically prefer. Not only that, but you can also discover a medium you really love that you never would have thought of before!
4) Whenever you get the chance, work in black and white or monochrome. This is a great way to help yourself learn about values and intensity, and just looks cool in general.
5) Piggybacking on that last point, if you’re ever worried about your shading, values, etc becoming muddled either A] take a picture and use a filter to make it black and white, or B] create another, pure white layer on top of the others and change it from “Normal” to “Hue”. Doing this can really help change your approach to coloring (black and white effect may be different for every art program).
6) If you want to get better at realistic faces, I was taught using the grid system. You have squares on your reference picture, squares on your paper, and then match up the body parts to the squares. I personally didn’t like this method, but it’s a really solid style of learning.
7) Start with the torso instead of the head. what you start with the head, the body may end up becoming wonky and having the neck stretched out at an odd angle or having a too small cranium. This is easier to fix in digital art but I suggest just remembering the importance of that rib cage (this is something I’m still training myself out of).
8) Asking for feedback can be an invaluable tool. For example, last year I had this really weird thing where I drew my eyes way too close together- I never noticed until I had it pointed out to me, and it took MONTHS to break this habit.
9) References are very useful, and one fun technique I’ve found great use in is to draw a pose, first with no reference, and then following that reference very strictly. This can be helpful when you want to see where you are developmentally.
10) Every now and then while drawing, you want to put the pencil down, prop up your paper, and walk away so that you can see the full image from a distance. If you’re working digitally, you zoom out a great deal so that the image appears smaller. This is a GREAT tool for seeing which sections of the piece need the most attention and how those smaller details hold up.
11) If you have the opportunity, you REALLY want to participate in an actual art class. Having a teacher that can see what you’re doing in real time and knows where you’re at skill-wise is an INVALUABLE thing to have- these people were specifically taught how to teach you these skills, recognize your problems and how to fix them. Don’t be afraid to talk to them and ask for advice about non-classwork art, either! You can’t receive help if you don’t ask for it.
12) Flip your canvas! I know you’ve probably heard this before, but this is one of the best ways to check for anatomy inconsistencies.
13) When it comes to youtube artists, I don’t really actively follow any, but I do know of some!
Mark Crilley: While I don’t watch his videos much now, I used to follow his videos RELIGIOUSLY. He’s got some really solid advice on how to map out comics and mangas, and he taught me the importance of silent scenes and keeping your work from getting too wordy. He mostly does the soft anime look, but he also does some pretty stellar realism.
mikeymegamega: I’m not going to lie to you, anon- this man likes his cheesecake. This guy is all about the cute anime girls, so if you’re not looking for that, skip him, but I really can’t recommend his videos on hands, feet, and faces enough.
Proko: Has a video about best drawing exorcises and is the guy you turn to when you want to know about figure drawing. He tends to focus on the more realistic anatomy, and while his videos may be long he’s got some good advice. I’d say to check out his studying anatomy correctly video, and then just kinda scroll through his pages.
Ethan Becker: THE KNIFE MAN. The first time I clicked on him I thought he was making a troll video- but then he Got Into It and my dudes, my guys, he has some CRAZY good advice. The way he words things and shows you examples in his videos are amazing and I really can’t recommend him enough. He did a video called “Fixing PROKO's LAZY Drawings“ and while you’d think it would be a bash fest his advice on shading in it is just so incredibly useful. Click on pretty much any of his videos and you’ll be entertained and learning.
I'd also suggest watching speedpaints. Even if it was unintentional, I’ve learned several really solid art hacks from speedpaint and storytime videos- so always be aware that you have an option for that.
…. Oh! And also, practice! I know you’ve probably been given this advice from everyone already, but it’s worth remembering.
Sorry if this got a bit long, I just figured I’d try to give you some good hacks- and even if you have already heard of most of these, I hope I could at the very least entertain!

I've always tought the spn fandom was terrible with women, like the way they hate Anna Milton, Amelia Richardson. I could understand why people hated Ruby, Bela and Meg (even if I find some people overreacting) but it's funny to see how the same people love Crowley, Lucifer or Ketch. We had the same problem with Mary, I wasn't even a big fan of her but people expected her to act like a mother for her grown sons even if the last time she saw them they were very young ?!
So I actually got three separate asks kind of pertaining to the same basic subject here so I’m going to respond to all three messages here. I figure this is a bit more effective than giving three responses that are basically saying the same thing. So for reference, here’s the other two:
I can’t remember what convention it was or when it was but I definitely remember Jensen being asked a question about something -- and for the life of me, I can’t remember what the actual question was -- but Jensen gave a response that talked about the reason why there are no female characters on the main cast. He basically said that the reason that there isn’t really a female character that plays a major active role as part of TFW is that “the fandom would kill her”. Which I feel kind of sums up a lot of this fandom in a nutshell. A lot of the different factions of the fandom are constantly advocating that the female characters should be treated better in this show by the writers but at the same time, each time women do become more active players within the narrative, the fandom will complain about it and say that the show is losing track from what it originally was. So it’s like, “okay, you say you want these strong female characters but yet when you do get them, suddenly the show isn’t being true to itself anymore? What exactly is it that you do want?” The answer: A character that they or their favorite ships aren’t threatened by. And I’ll be honest here. While I enjoy seasons 1-3, I didn’t start getting obsessed with this show until season 4 started rolling around. The brother relationship is nice and all but this show really could not have sustained itself for 15 seasons on the brother relationship alone. By the time season 3 rolled around, I was getting bored with the show. The constant focus on the brothers while interesting and dynamic, it felt like that aspect of the story was losing its flame. I’m sorry, but when you have a story that’s completely about two brothers hunting monsters of the week and they spend 16 hours a day in a car working through their issues, you’re going to make far more progress in dealing with those issues and you’re quickly going to lose material to create conflict between them. And around season 3, I was starting to get the feeling that their brother relationship while still fun was just kind of stagnating, they weren’t giving me anything new to latch on to. So episodes where Bela and Ruby were around were episodes that I latched on to. And season 4 when we were introduced to this large assortment of new characters really just reinvigorated the show for me. New characters to bring in conflict was exactly what the show needed so I’m not sure why the fandom is always so against changes to the status quo. Do they want to be watching the same episode over and over again? These new characters were perfect for what the show needed to do in order to continue the brother relationship everyone loves so much.
I’m not sure if it just has to do with the majority of this fandom being comprised of females but basically every female character who could possibly be a romantic interest to any of the male characters are widely hated by a lot of the fandom. Perhaps it stems from members of the fandom projecting their own fantasies onto these male characters so any of these potential female love interests makes these members of the fandom feel threatened or they see these female characters as getting in the way of their favorite ships. But I do notice that a lot of male characters don’t receive the same level of hate which really just adds credence to my hypothesis that members of the fandom feel threatened by these female characters whether it’s them who feel personally threatened or they feel like their favorite ships are threatened because of the characters’ presence. And it’s not lost on me that Charlie is such a well-loved character not only because she’s a great example for more inclusion of LGBT characters but she also wasn’t a threat to the status quo, it was never in the realm of possibility that she would be a romantic interest for any of the members of TFW. But it’s beyond confusing that the same people screaming for more female inclusion into the story also complain about the same thing they wanted in the first place when it’s given to them. And just throwing this out here, a part of the problem is that society places such an emphasis on women needing to be these perfect creatures that the fandom is far less forgiving towards imperfect female characters despite the male characters doing far worse things than any of these females have done. For the female characters, it’s all, “how could she do such a terrible thing, that selfish bitch!” but yet when male characters make mistakes, it’s suddenly all, “look at the depth and character growth and how nuanced his character is, he’s the bestest character ever, a true role model”. And me personally, even the “evil female characters” like Anna, Ruby, Bela, or Meg I thought were all kind of fascinating and kind of undeserving of the hate they get by the fandom. In story, yes, they do a lot of bad things that you should not advocate for but should they be regarded as the show’s biggest mistakes? Should hate blogs be created specifically for them? Definitely not. Do I make excuses for the decisions any of these women make? Certainly not. Just like I don’t make any excuses for the decisions TFW makes. I go into this show looking at everything from a story perspective. Are the decisions these characters making, is their presence propelling this story in interesting and fun directions and most of the time with these female characters, yes they are. I’m more interested in what the story can do for me as opposed to what individual characters can do for me. So I like Meg, I like Bela, I like Anna, I like Lisa, I like Mary. And I think that’s the disconnect that I have sometimes with the fandom. I’m in it for the story and a lot of them are in it for what these characters can give them.
Me personally? I would love for a female character to play a more active role in TFW but the only way that could ever work is if she doesn’t threaten the status quo in the eyes of the fandom. And the biggest weakness I’ve always had with this show and particularly in season 14 when its startingly obvious is the fact that the show wants to be an ensemble-based show but yet they still don’t want to lose what the show originally was, they still want it to be about the brothers driving cross-country fighting monsters of the week. The show keeps on trying to meet in the middle and it just doesn’t work because they’re not spending enough time with these other characters to make me truly think of them as characters. Like, I really liked Mary in season 12, in fact, her and Kelly Kline in season 12 were probably my favorite parts about that season. The story surrounding Mary about her trying to figure out where she fits in a world that really doesn’t need her anymore was so interesting. And then how it delves into Mary changing from the typical role middle-age women typically have in these shows as these motherly characters and delves into her just trying to figure out who she really is was such a great move for her as a character. It gave her character depth as opposed to just being the means in which Sam and Dean came into the world. She showed that she’s more than just a mother, that she has worth that goes beyond just being a mother, particularly being a mother to people who no longer need a mother. But as we go further into season 13 and 14, it became startingly obvious that because of the show trying to do this dual format thing, Mary just lost a lot of her presence and a lot of her agency.
I’ve also heard this fan theory that supposedly Meg may have sexually assaulted Cas while he was in the asylum. And while I certainly don’t think Meg would be against such tactics in general (she is a demon, she does bad things) but I also view Meg as a pragmatist and extremely goal-oriented. Meg is on no one’s side but her own and she really only does things to further her own goals. So doing something that could break Cas any more than he already has been would seem to go against what her goals would suggest and that’s her basically using Cas as her personal bodyguard. Assaulting him wouldn’t help her in any way. And also, despite Cas “losing his marbles” as it were, his angel powers at this point in time were still relatively well intact. I find it highly unlikely he wouldn’t be able to defend himself if he felt the need to. We all know Dean is the biggest perpetrator when it comes to psychological abuse. He’s the one that withholds love and positive reinforcement after all. And often times, looking back at this show now, I can’t believe I ever felt a draw towards Destiel. I suppose it has more to do with how I joined the fandom. Despite the fact that I’ve been watching this show for the past decade, I’ve only been in the fandom for a few years. And when I first joined the fandom, I first came across a lot of good meta writing from individuals who hailed within the Destiel faction. So whereas before I joined the fandom, I never really felt any kind of pull towards any ship at all, but because I was constantly stuck in this echo chamber with a community that kept on telling me how amazing Destiel was, I just kind of fell into that trap. But eventually, as I started peeking behind the curtain, as I saw how the Destiel faction treats other factions and began to look at Destiel more objectively and away from their very narrow point of view, I saw that canon Destiel is kind of awful and that while Dean may not be an awful character objectively speaking, he is a toxic and terrible person that I wouldn’t wish anyone to have a romantic endgame with, except maybe Ketch. Ketch and Dean may have gotten hit by a cupid, I’m just saying. These days as far as Cas shipping goes, I’m all about the Megstiel and Sastiel shit. And I would love for Rachel to come back as Meg, I think that would be totally awesome. And I know she’s stated that she would love for Meg to come back and basically show that you can be this badass in a wheelchair and I would love that because Rachel is total badass and let’s have art imitate life on this one, please.
Like I said earlier, I strongly believe that Jo is a character the fandom felt threatened by. And there were times when I almost felt like she had a bit of crush on both Sam and Dean. But after season 2, she had minimal involvement in the story and she only became a player again only to be killed off. Now, I don’t know if there was such a large amount of time where Jo disappeared because the actress was doing other projects or not, but it’s not impossible to imagine that the writers kind of just pushed her to the side when they realized their audience wasn’t reacting to her positively. It probably didn’t help that she was so obviously being framed as a potential love interest, the writers weren’t being subtle at all with her. So it’s really not surprising that the fandom reacted the way they did with her. I liked Jo, I wished they had done more with her. Her and her mother’s death scene to this day still makes me cry like a baby. And it’s really not at all satisfying either. Both characters really deserved better and at the very least, have a sacrificial death scene that actually meant something in the grand scheme of things. But instead, their deaths were completely in vain and it sucks.
But anyway, I think I’ve rambled on enough about this. Sorry, it got so long. But in a nutshell, this fandom is terrible to its female characters and its not necessarily on the writers of the show. The writers have no problems writing strong female characters with active agency, it’s the fandom that’s the problem and their own personal prejudices. I mean, the writers literally brought Mary back (really unnecessarily) so they could have a chance to subvert Mary being the “woman in the refrigerator” trope. I’ve never believed the show had a problem with mistreating their female characters, while I do think the show does mistreat them, don’t get me wrong, but a lot of it stems from necessity based on how the fandom treats these characters. These characters get treated the way they do in large part because of the fandom’s own actions. It’s a beast of their own making, essentially.
