Do you think that a fanfic writer can/should be held accountable for their actions in the same way that a published author such as J. K. Rowling can/should be?
Well, I know fanfiction isn't on the same level as an original published book, but considering that some fanfics are getting movie adaptations... Still, I firmly believe fanfic authors need to take responsibility over what they post online. Like, I'm not counting teenagers here necessarily. I talk about grown up authors who refuse to take any sort of constructive criticism. I don't know why people act like fiction should not ever be criticized. Fanfiction still has the author's biases. It still romanticizes serious things that should not be romanticized.
Authors need to tag properly. They need to stop posting heinous fanworks in kids fandoms instead of complaining about the kids who find it. People seem to forget that their works will remain on the internet forever and that they're going to affect others. You know all those lessons we were taught about the internet a decade ago? Why did everyone seem to forget them?
Overall, fanfic authors don't have the same power or influence someone like JKR has, considering they're still taking an existent piece of media and are just playing around with it. Still, they need to grow some critical thinking and realize their actions have consequences.
