4. Movie of the year?

You know, I feel like I watched a surprisingly small amount of movies this year. And I'm struggling to remember them all. Going off of personal impact to me, I have to say Bonhoeffer. I was a wreck for days after seeing that. But like in a good way? In second place is Aliens. Ripley and Hicks and Newt my beloveds WHO ALL SURVIVED AND LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

(Also it's really rare for me to enjoy a sequel more than the original but dude Aliens was so good 😭)

6. Episode of TV or webisode that defined the year for you?

'Fishes', season 2 episode 6 of The Bear. Every second felt like taking a ballpeen hammer to the ribs. I loved it. But also that one super whimsical episode of Fringe?? Brown Betty. That one was so good. I wanna go rewatch it now XD

8. Game of the year?

I have played. so much game this year. and I can't decide. Hilariously, I think it's a tie between Fields of Mistria and The Witcher 3, just going by what new games I loved the most. This year has been a year of discovering many new (and old) games.

9. Best month for you this year?

ANY OF THEM AFTER AUGUST. No but seriously XD I have experienced many stresses since moving to TN, but not being stuck in my old life and finding new life has made me into a new person. Every month here has had its struggles but I've also experienced more tangible blessings and found more genuine connections with the people around me than I think I ever have. And of course, I think October takes the cake because I got to hang out with you in person!! 💙

But an honorable mention from before moving out would be April. That was when my mom took me to my doctor's appointment where I was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and as well as finally being given the knowledge of why everything was so difficult and painful for me, it also marked a major olive branch moment between me and my mom.

14. Favorite book you read this year?

MAN I DON'T KNOW. I think it was earlier this year that you got me to read The Queen's Thief series and if that's right, that whole series is up there. And the first book of The Witcher series is RIGHT up there too. I read a lot of good books this year, it's very hard to pick XD

- TV show of the year? ...jesus christ did i even watch any TV this year? Fringe, i think? and I watched the first season of the PJO series for class.... uh. well. i certainly didn't watch enough TV to have an answer for this, goddamn.

- Favorite actor of the year? well, i spent a lot of time being really normal (lying) about Kyle Gallner and Johnny Berchtold? otherwise i, uh, don't really pay much mind to actors. i do think Ariana Grande fucking nailed playing Glinda in Wicked.

- Game of the year? mm. i spent a lot of time playing Slime Rancher (the first one). also really enjoyed Gourdlets.

- Best month for you this year? *vaguely panicked hysterical laughter in the distance* uh. either january, before the migraines hit; june, the first month that the migraines started to noticeably drop in number and the month i went and saw @heronfem for their birthday; or december, because i got to go visit them again and also go see my beloved @queerfictionwriter

- Something that made you cry this year? *panicked laughter continues, louder* how much time do you have?

- Something you want to do again next year? definitely going back to visit vinn and twist again.

- Talk about a new friend you made this year okay the one is a funny story -- so i took a botany class that i totally bombed but that's irrelevant and one day i ended up skipping it but going up to campus to go to another class i had after, and one of my classmates that i'd been sitting next to, and, notably, sharing food with (they like dried fruit and i can't eat it for autism reasons, but the preprepped packs i buy have dried fruit), stopped to ask me a question about my cane. i answered it, but before they could go i was like. hey. this is embarrassing because we've been in class for like three weeks and we've straight up been sharing food. but what's your name. and they looked at me and laughed and were like "it's sage, but great news, i don't know your name either, so --" anyway we spent like an hour and a half chattering at one another and i validated their suspicion that they were autistic (i had clocked that on day one of class whoops)

- How was your birthday this year? it sure happened! it sure wasn't terrible! i think? genuinely i do not remember a ton about it. my memory isn't great to start with and the migraines have made it worse.

- Favorite book you read this year? i haven't read a ton of full books, BUT i did read a short story i want literally everyone to go read immediately: The Six Deaths of the Saint by Alix E. Harrow. it's super fucking cool and rocked my world when read it for class

- What’s a bad habit you picked up this year? honestly i am forgiving myself of any habits i picked up brand new because this year has sucked so fucking badly that anything that wasn't actively detrimental to my health gets a pass

Favorite Book → The book I find myself reaching for over and over again is Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen. It may not be the best written but, as the middle kid who's overlooked constantly, it's special to me.

6. Episode of tv or webisode that defined the year for you?

It has to be Avoid the Void LOL. I haven't rewatched any other eps of sonic prime but that episode I've seen. Many many times. It's a comfort video at this point.

ALSO. Dan and Phil's end of hiatus video and all the rest they made this year, mostly the phil is not on fire react videos. That wasn't an interest I thought would be reawoken this year but there we go!! They rlly helped me through the final few months of the year too I won't lie.

11. Something you want to do again next year?

Comic con!! Now that I've got a stable income I've been going twice a year and I rlly enjoy it even if it's super tiring skdjghdg. The past two times I cosplayed Myles Kitsune Prower (NIN Tails) and the amount of kids who recognised me and pointed and waved made me so happy 🥺. Next year I'm planning on cosplaying Infinite which I'm excited abt, it'll be the first time I actually make something for a cosplay! (The phantom ruby in his chest). Maybe they'll even be another sonic cosplay meet up next time...

4. Movie of the year?

hmmmm im gonna say Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, because I loved it so much and had so much fun, and have had as much fun every time I've rewatched it. Honorable mention goes to the FNaF movie, because I had a blast watching it and I got to see some hot boys doing hot boy things (murdering, whimpering, etc), but it doesn't get the first place, because I've heard too many people making fun of it and it makes me really upset. Like way too upset. Way more upset than it deserves. So it doesn't get to be first place because I feel like it's opened me up to a lot more mockery than i already was, and i'm DELICATE

ough this was hard because every time I think of something that was huge for me, it actually came out last year?? I don't really watch TV, and every time I think of something really good that I watched on youtube, it actually came out last year. (Sorry In Space With Markiplier.... i think you should still get to be the best movie of the year, even though you came out in 2022. Time has no meaning.)

18. A memorable meal this year?

There's a strip mall near where I live where one of the stores in it had been under construction for a while. It was supposed to be a BBQ place when it was done, but it seemed like the sign went up and then months later, nothing else had happened? One day my partner and I were driving home from the store and saw lights on in it, so we decided to swing by and see if it was finally open. We had been excited about the place because... well frankly, I'm kind of hard to feed. But I love barbecue! We went in and it turned out that it was their like... pre-opening weekend? They had the store open and were having people sign their guestbook and giving away free champagne (I did not partake, because I don't drink, but it was nice to be offered). My partner got a turkey sandwich and I got a baked potato with pulled pork, and both were really fucking good. We go to that restaurant almost once a week now. We always get brisket, though. Brisket is one of my all-time favorite foods (I didn't get it the first night we went there because they were sold out. Or they didn't have any yet? They only had turkey or pulled pork)

6. Episode of tv or webisode that defined the year for you?

My first answer is of course the succession finale. It's just one of the episodes of TV of all time and I'm so glad I was able to enjoy the show in its prime and was able to watch it as it aired (that sounds so dramatic lol). I haven't been able to rewatch the finale again. If I think about it for too long (meal fit for a king siblings in barbados, you kiss guys on molly, the final boardroom vote and the kenrome fight, the final tomshiv shot, the final moments on each sibling and the fucking music!!) - I genuinely feel like sobbing and combusting into flames.

I also watched Severance and Interview With The Vampire this year! And I adored the finales of both of those shows too.

19. What’re you excited about for next year?

On a blorbo note, I'm excited for Interview With The Vampire season 2 coming out next year! I'll be happy to see my fav unreliable vampires (and Daniel) on my screen again. I've taken a break from fanfic recently, but I'm excited to try and write some in the new year (...eventually...i feel like I've forgotten how to write, help!) On a more personal note, I'm excited to spend more time around people who I love and enjoy new art and writing. I'm excited to be brave enough to leave behind my deadname when meeting new people, and to eat whipped ice cream from the cornerstone when the summer rolls around again.

As per usual, this also means an open question night--my askbox is always open, but I'll be actively keeping an eye on it tonight. I do take prompts, but am not necessarily fast in filling them. Any fandom I've posted about here or on AO3 is fair game, as is any of my original stuff.

Short one this month, because I didn't get much done last month, whoops...a big work project took up more brainmeats than I expected it would, ah well.

Mostly moved, mostly everything is sorted; a few things I still need to finish organizing/putting away/etc. But that should also free up some brainspace hopefully!

Anyway. Actual updates.

Star Wars:

Pretty much the same as last week--need to catch up on OTP meme fills; poking back at my original plan for last year's SWBB so I can use it for this year. Not a lot of progress, but hopefully this month will be better!

BSG:

Big Bang matches have gone out! I'm excited to see how everything turns out. And hopefully get actually back into writing the many plotlines that are floating around in my head, lol...particularly The Other Battlestar which still needs an Official title and has been waiting to come out of my head and get Shared for like. over a year. even discounting the like 8-10 year gap when I wandered away from the fandom...

I should be picking up my rewatch soon, too! I have the back half of season 3, plus season 4, and maybe the webisodes (I have access to Face of the Enemy but not Resistance, so we'll see if I actually watch those). Which does mean we're coming up on my absolute least favorite episode in the entire series, haha. I haven't even gotten to it yet and I'm already mad about it (and have found an Additional Reason to be mad about it that I hadn't had before! Yay!) But also after that I get Lampkin, who I love, and while season 4 is a mess in terms of cohesion/continuity it has some of my very favorite episodes in the entire series, So.

Castlevania:

I haven't actually sat down and watched Nocturne yet (mostly because of the aforementioned work stuff), so I haven't quite fallen back into this fandom yet. I do want to get back to Incinctus, and I had one other plot thread idea for another fic based on the first series (essentially, shifting Alucard's S3 timeline by six weeks so the night Sumi and Taka plan to attack him is the same night Greta's messenger gets there, and then see where things go from there).

It's kind of interesting--I have approximately zero knowledge of the games, apart from a few bits and pieces I've picked up from reading fics and/or hanging out on a discord server. Which, of course, has been talking a lot about Nocturne...but almost entirely in the context of how it relates to the game characters/plotlines it's drawing from. Which means I'm both...more and less hyped for it? I don't know, I'm not sure how to word how it's impacted my interest/excitement/etc. for the followup series, because a lot of the comments about certain characters/choices completely fly over my head but they Dominate the server and I'm like "...okay?"

Anyway, we'll see how I feel about it when I watch the series. And if I do end up building a VC crossover in my head (because like. armand and the theatre are right there and while I was able to confine myself to a quick Easter Egg reference in Incinctus...lol.)

Les Mis:

The next chapter of P&J is coming, I swear. Also planning to debut Acheron this month because...I mean I know it's technically a Groundhog Day AU set in June, but it feels appropriate to start posting it around Halloween? IDK XD

Recently rewatched the first ep of sanctuary and y'all.

It's so bad. I love it.

Some things:

• the entire cast is so beautiful and talented that you forgive the awful pacing. Where can I sign up to be gently hit by a car and offered a job by a mysteriously smiling Amanda Tapping in a mediocre wig???

• Will is legit in a terrible place at the beginning of the show, like. Holy shit. This man should be on leave rn. But at the same time showing up for work and being expected to be ambulatory and answer to his name is pretty much the only thing keeping him going as long as they don't expect any real personality from him, and the actor plays it in a much more visceral way than that kind of depression is usually played. I feel like I remember this is dropped fairly quickly? but it could've been used to make the whole kali arc very interesting? Idk it's been a while since I've seen the show. But also, again, holy shit.

• the vibes of the bit at Will's apartment. This show was written by a woman.

• it's been a long time since I've watched the show, so I could be wrong, but I feel like this bit is like...the only notably intentional shirtless scene in the show. Okay, I'm probably wrong, but there are plenty of other instances where the fact that someone is naked or drenched or has unexpected piercings are scene enhancers, not the whole point of the scene

• weird vibe between Henry and Magnus. "Boss" doesn't sit right between them. Maybe they were already planning the fact plot that Magnus raised him and the "as your doctor yes but as your mother no" drama?

• doylistically, the idea of the Sanctuary Network was probably still being percolated, plus this was reworked from a webisode, but Old City Sanctuary feels lonely in the pilot. A lone fortress.

Yeah... I'm not sure how I'm going to feel about BTTS to be honest. Although iirc Serling comes back with them, so thank god he'll be there to help me through that last difficult season. I could have done without most of s5. My favourite episode was Membership Drive because it was great seeing Nano get a happy ending and Mikey and Leo do another superhero team up with the Justice Force. The fact that it was the only episode NOT focused on the demon subplot...

Good point about Sh'okonabo - at least no one will ever call this guy original. Everything he does has been done more effectively by other villains in past seasons. I liked some of Laird's ideas for what they could have done with him, but ultimately it seems like he wasn't too happy with this guy either lol. Besides all the gross-out humour in that episode, I did find the evil goo episode fun, but oh my GODD the ending made the entire thing feel completely pointless.

Raph needs a hug, Mikey needs some antidepressants, and Leo needs his personality back. Don is the one thriving for once, and he has already been through so much, I won't take that away from him.

All the FF notes I've read from Laird's blog have been about TT2 so I haven't seen this Cody rant yet but omg I'm excited for it because it's a relief to know that everyone working on FF wasn't oblivious to how much he fucked the turtles over???? Sometimes I feel like I'm going crazy when watching.

"It would make Cody look bad" GOOD!!!! GOD FORBID THE NEPO BABY HAS TO ANSWER TO HIS MISTAKE THAT HAS COMPLETELY UPROOTED THEIR LIVES, RIGHT???? They say never meet your heroes but how about never meet your fans??? These turtles didn't ask to be hero-worshipped, dumped 100 years in the future with no easy way home, and then forced to live with the person who got them into this mess. It would have been SUPER CATHARTIC to let Raph (or honestly, any of them) tear him a new one. I've been manifesting it in my rewatch and it just never happens!! The one thing that consoles me is knowing that when they returned to the present they left Cody in 2105 without Serling and with every single enemy they didn't manage to defeat because they were saving them for season 2. He is going to be so screwed and I'm living for it.

OH IF YOU DO I AM GOING TO EAT THIS UP. In fact please let me cameo in it. I'll help you Mr Dunn. Together we can end Scrappy Jones once and for all.

(Fun fact that isn't really relevant but I wasn't sure where else to put - Darius, Jammerhead and the Street Phantoms show up in the IDW comics! I haven't read to that point yet, so I can't say if they're anywhere near as cartoonish as they are in FF or if it gave them all a more grounded take. But it fascinated me when I found out that they exist outside of FF, especially Darius without Cody. I'm curious to find out what they did with him when I eventually get there lol. I think... highly controversial opinion here... I would have taken a second season of FF over BTTS, just because I feel like the cyber Shredder plot is bullshit, Serling doesn't deserve to get stuck 100 years in the past forever, and there were some fun concepts that I wish they'd explored. In my ideal version of FF2 maybe they realised FF1 fell short in a lot of ways and got their shit together and made a good fucking season as compensation, but I guess we'll never know if they would have improved it or not. If it was the same quality as FF1 I'd be annoyed but I'd probably still watch it. I'm dreading watching BTTS. Zell made me watch that webisode and I still have nightmares about it.

I'd end FF2 with the turtles and splinter returning home (without serling because my man has been through enough) through a time portal, only to find that all of their friends have been awaiting their return (maybe ancient one got a vision or smth) in a surprise party. they get embraced by everyone they have helped and loved along the way, and they sigh and say "it's good to be home". like the wedding but with way less awkwardness to it, and ofc I would give Leo and Usagi their much-desired reunion. Oh, and Klunk gets to be there, because I miss him so much in FF. Cody if you don't include a Klunk memorial shrine in your creepy little turtle museum I swear...

Turtle Titan 2 my beloved!!!!!! The fact that Laird wanted him to be a much bigger character in FF2 makes me so happy. He's one of the few characters/storylines I really, really like from FF, not just for who he is as a person but what he represents - that Mikey's compassion and sense of justice made a difference that has impact 100 years later. But ah well, if FF didn't want to use him more, their loss. He's mine now and I'm going to mold him like clay.

This........... actually never dawned on me until you pointed it out. Holy shit? You're right. Where are all the humans?!?!? My best explanation is maybe NNY is like a 'hub' for alien life on Earth compared to other major cities and countries, and that's why there's a higher alien-to-human ratio. I feel like the street phantoms are human, just using some sort of device that makes them ghostly?? But I could be wrong, I was NOT paying attention lol.

O'Neill Tech controlling so much of NNY is wild, because when you have one company running everything, that is HUGELY RISKY. It also feels like even if Darius wasn't actively trying to murder his nephew to gain control over the business, it's still operating under shady circumstances. Like do we really think April and Don would have wanted this cyberpunk hold on NNY? Personally I don't. I have to wonder if Cody's parents were even shadier than Darius is.

Cody is kept inside for ethical reasons. Darius is protecting the world from Cody, not the other way around.

I've wondered about the rest of the building!!!! Accommodation for O'Neill Tech employees maybe? Or maybe it's informally known as Nepo Baby Buildings to the locals.

My opinion on Serling completely changed once I realised what a NIGHTMARE he was up against. The fact that Splinter was actively participating in creating the mess and making jokes like "no it's not terrible that we trashed your home, it's terrible that my sons didn't catch the plate I just threw at the wall" is INSANE TO ME. WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE?!!!! YOU'RE NOT THE HAMATOS I KNOW AND LOVE!!!!!! Serling is the only one calling them out for their obnoxious bullshit so he's where my solidarity lies now.

I actually love the idea that they're doing this to be passive-aggressive. I choose to believe that from now on.

Lastly - yes, what the hell happened to Leo's personality, did it get banished with the demon shredder? You're seriously telling me he wouldn't take this opportunity to take a night class on 16th Century Japanese Swordsmanship now that he is free to walk the streets? He wouldn't still patrol the rooftops for trouble because that's all they've known for so long? He wouldn't dig into what happened to the foot clan in the future, just in case things got bad again?

The shell thing could have had its own episode tbh. Picture this - medical technology has come a long way and during a routine physical for the turtles Cody repairs Leo's shell without even thinking to ask him first. It leads to an unexpected blow-up because even though what happened to him was terrible, having that scar taken from him without permission crossed a line and leads into a big 'this is what I hate about the future, and this is exactly the selfishness that made you strand us here' rant that blindsides everyone. Even Master Splinter doesn't understand. Leo flees and the guys go after him - some drama ensues - he is eventually found after idk fighting the street phantoms or something. Cody realises how much he's hurt Leo and apologises. Leo doesn't even understand himself why he's not happy at his shell being repaired, but it feels like another part of his story has been lost to time now, sanitised and stripped away from him. You have to take the bitter with the sweet.

By the end of the episode Leo makes peace with it but idk, maybe Cody learns to stay in his own fucking lane in future or something.

@love-killed-the-superstar​ I hope you don’t mind but this particular part of your recent liveblog just… really sparked something in my brain that I need to get out, re: Fast Forward, and it’s this repeating theme of FF rehashing a plot point from S1-4 but worse. Like the turtles version of a live action Disney reboot.

This turned into a massive rant, oops, more under the cut. Clearly, I have a lot of feelings about this.

Hi! Thanks, I’ve been rewatching the series to better understand Lagoona & Gil as part of a media analysis and critical thinking exercise. Or you know, just for fun.

I was trying to watch the webisodes in order, but I’ll skip ahead to this episode since it’s been AWHILE since I’ve seen it and upon rewatch its true… Gil did not tell Lagoona why he was hanging out with Lorna so much but he did NOT ditch Lagoona, she tried to make plans with Gil to go shopping but he already had plans with Lorna. Ditching Lagoona would be if him and Lagoona had plans and he bailed but not making new plans when you already have plans is not the same as ditching. It’s honoring your previous engagement.

Lorna didn’t specify what their “thing” was and I GUESS I can kinda see why that might come off as suspicious, but if she didn’t want Lagoona to know she’s allowed. You say he didn’t tell Lagoona what he was doing and your right, he didn’t … but was this Lagoona’s business? … because I don’t think it is. Lorna was clearly uncomfortable bringing up the topic in front of Lagoona & Sirena and I can see why it’s kind of a personal topic that she only felt comfortable telling Gil. And as a good friend to Lorna, Gil would have no place telling someone else Lorna's personal business- that includes Lagoona.

However Lagoona isn’t to blame completely in the episode, she was fine with them hanging out until Sirena planted the seed of doubt in her head by saying she would be jealous if she was in Lagoona’s shoes, Sirena is absolutely projecting her own insecurities onto Lagoona’s relationship and I don’t think Lagoona would have gotten so bent out of shape if Sirena wasn’t chirping in her ear.

But after Sirena gets into Lagoona's head she spies on Gil, throws their lunch away because Lorna sat next to him and then admits to Sirena she is jealous. But I don't think any of that is Gil's fault - in fact spying on your significant other is a pretty shitty thing to do (and this is the second time she's spied on Gil BTW). I don't like this episode, Lagoona doesn't have any freckles and she doesn't have any common sense either.

I don't blame Lagoona entirely for this, most of this is absolutely on Sirena with her teeny tiny head that doesn't have any brains in it. But Sirena DOES wonder why Lagoona doesn't just ask Gil what's going on and she doesn't because "if I do it shows I don't trust him...and I do... don't I?" she doesn't and that is a moral failing on Lagoona. Gil has never once strayed or given her a reason to think he would, she just let Sirena get into her head because the whole fresh water vs salt water thing is a sore spot.

The big secret place Gil and Lorna went into? The Pool, the public place on school property where the entire swim team practices so hypothetically if Lorna and Gil were having an affair I can't think of a worse place to do it than in a room where everyone you know hangs out. However, canonically? the pool at Monster High is the deepest in the world so I guess you could make the argument that it's easy to get lost in there but having an affair 101 is both you of aren't supposed to enter or exit places at the same time your supposed to stagger your entrances and exits to avoid suspension.... not that I've done it I just watch a lot of drama.

After eavesdropping Lagoona and Sirena get busted and Gil asks them what they're doing here and Lagoona just straight up lies to Gil about getting him a crab like she wasn't following him. though he did lie to her in volume 2 so I guess they're even now.

a lot of people don't like Gil and I'm trying to find out why. and Boy howdy! sure is a good thing I didn't tell anyone they need therapy, that would be super awkward. I said therapy wouldn't hurt... and it won’t Everyone can benefit from therapy.
