You know, I used to think that I really disliked ceremonial magic, but now that I understand a little more, I think my aversion is simply to overly prescriptive magical systems. I appreciate the structure that Western ceremonial magic works so hard to build through all its labyrinthine traditions. I just feel that it's important for one to own the magical symbolism one uses. I disliked the idea of adopting a planetary correspondence just because someone else said it worked, and not because someone had dived deep, and crafted and discerned their own meaning within it. I gather that that's not how it really works.
Now that I'm spending a little more time with a ritual magic system (albeit heavier on the ritual than the magic) I'm starting to appreciate the satisfaction of receiving a set of symbols and diving into them. Exploring, meditating, ruminating on what you've been giving and seeing it unfold in its own particular way for you. I place a lot of value on *localization*, if it doesn't make sense to the land that I'm living on, why the hell am I bothering?
At the very least, for the moment, working within a tradition is at least a certain amount of escape from the LOA/ manifestation/ pop-psych-self-care modern witchcraft. That shit was what kept me from taking occultism seriously for about five years before I caved to the itch, started researching, and found an angle to approach all this from that didn't make me feel like I was buying snake oil.
A lot of my thoughts about magic are purely academic because... well... I don't really do a lot of it. That's one of the reasons I don't call myself a witch. I think I've only cast two spells worth the word in my life; I just haven't had a need or urge for more. There are a few certain goals that I have, but until I have a better grasp on my own magical theory, I see no point in experimenting blindly. If I'm going to put the work in it better be for a reason, for some substantial end. I am the kind of person who needs to build her own toolset, and until I have a more solid kit, experimenting won't be fruitful.
I suspect that, once I do have a foundation I am satisfied with, I'm going to become much more magically active. But that's not where I am right now and I am not in a rush. I've been given plenty of shit to work on in the meantime, until I'm ready.
