“Well?  Are you male or female?  How can you tell with your kind?”

Merla’s eyes fixed on him, eerily unblinking, a bit too much like a watchful hawk’s.  “It matters?”

Adrienne sputtered.  “Of course it does!  Do I call you he or she?”

“I’m partial to both, Doni’.  They as well.”

NAME: Merla Mero

Merla has a long life beneath her belt.  She witnessed the death of most of her clan at a young age.  Instead of staying with what remained, she joined a travelling band of mercenaries, eventually becoming a mercenary herself.  In this group, she met her best friend, Avri.

After years of working together, Merla and Avri decided that they didn’t see themselves ever taking romantic partners, so they decided to start a family together.  When their twin daughters were born, though, Avri died during childbirth, leaving Merla a single parent.

They loved their daughters dearly, raising them to be warriors much like they were and continuing their work with new family.  Tragedy struck once more, though, when Merla tangled with corrupted authorities of the Masko Alliance.  They were captured and their daughters came to help, only to die during the escape.

Merla left Vierra afterwards, thinking that the only way he would find peace was by leaving behind the cause of so many of his woes.  He took jobs all across Esurience before finding himself in Solvan.  Exotic to the isolated peoples there, he was in high demand.  It was Adrienne’s family who offered the most pay for his services, so he became Adrienne’s personal guard.

Merla’s a little more concerned about his own personal struggles than he is the tragedy that cause so many people to disappear.  He can’t help but linger on the deaths of his family, fighting a desire for vengeance with his desire for peace.

Merla probably has the most trouble fitting in with the group.  Even once the fae, a little more knowledgeable about Vierran culture than the Solvani, join up, they find themself unable to connect.  They only remain because they have no where else to go.
