i do agree with this post in general and with immediate prev addition, but i gotta say: that's something i purposefully do for fun xD there's a learning curve to a specific fandom's fanfiction and what the writers consider important to the stories or vital to their characters' personalities. it's also interesting to see the recurring themes and what gets spotlighted, which oftentimes is much different than what canon chose to emphasize. i find myself curious as to how an original book would read if it had been written like that, with a greater degree of separation and with the implicit assumption of familiarity
fascinating that when you tell people "you have to learn the rules to break them" when talking about drawing/painting etc everyone nods and agrees but the second you say "you have to read books if you want to write better" there's a horde of contrarians begging to be the wrongest people ever all of a sudden
#i think it would be fun#and i recognize that og books require context given in text since they ARE the source material#but sometimes writers go overboard. explain things over and over again until i feel like i'm consuming netflix's -#''assume the viewer is making spaghetti while watching this show''#i'm reading imperial radch right now - third book - and the author does that noticeably often; keeps reminding us of things that were-#already explained or rehashing past events like those anime ''here's what happened last!'' sections#and isn't one of the writing advices to begin in the middle? to cut as much unnecessary fluffing about as possible until u arrive at heart?#balance is the key as in everything. can't say too little but can't say too much. contrary to how the general populace is treated#we don't need our food all chewed up for our convenience. we're humans; we have teeth; leave us some chunks to bite into properly
