#i'm okay with keeping humans captive as lawful punishment

i haven’t been to a zoo since age ~13. it’s just that they used to keep people from american and african tribes in european zoos, so unless someone can clarify to me how is that different from keeping animals in confined spaces (the principle is the same: they’re “less than”. it doesn’t matter animals aren’t aware they’re captive because people didn’t think or didn’t care other people were), i can’t be okay with helping a zoo profit.
i might visit a scientific facility that keeps captive animals but that’s it. they’re not profiting from me so it’s not as immoral for me. i’m not even that keen on keeping personal pets, so... yeah, why do i have the right to keep an animal captive? i might have pets in the future but only because it would improve my mental health, but i’m not even sure about the morality of that so zoos are something else entirely.
#animal rights#i'm okay with keeping humans captive as lawful punishment#because i think a society that lets wrongdoings go unpunished is doomed to fail#but taking away people's freedoms is the farthest i'm willing to go in terms of punishment#and it's not because i personally spite criminals or something#it's just because i genuinely believe that punishments serves a function in our species#but there's no reason why we should do anything beyond punishing#which implies punishing without inflicting physical pain#yeah anyways a tangent#that's how much i regard taking away someone's freedom#only animals can't do crimes so#just to say i'm not a softie who hates prisons or something#i just don't think prisons should be the primary focus of crime prevention#because they're punishment and not prevention which are different things#cause vs effect and so on
