oh no I’m having feelings about Meng Yao again
(I’m up to ep 4 now)
I’d forgotten Meng Yao was there at Lan summer camp! regrettably, even knowing how everything’s going to go down this time round, I still like him so much. It is a problem. but just! his shocked little look when Lan Xichen goes out of his way to compliment him after the two background disciples have been chatting shit! the way their hands touch on the box, hello yes I am Xiyao trash thank you for noticing. see also: That Look when Nie Huaisang, wingman extraordinaire, whispers to him how the Twin Jades deserve their reputation The way he instantly puts Nie Huaisang protectively behind him (despite being unarmed himself!) when the Wens draw their swords!
Also just gonna be sad for a bit that while everyone else is in these fairly uniform robes, Meng Yao’s marked out in much darker, more functional robes. even when there’s a literal uniform, he’s still not allowed to be part of the group. (I know it’s cos he’s not a disciple when everyone else is, but that in itself is saddening, given his backstory. and again, this scene just visually reinforces that he’s allowed to get so close to the life he wants, but he can never fully be part of it)
we take a break from your regularly scheduled Meng Yao Feelings to comment that I fucking die every time the romance theme swells in the background music. I especially like its appearance in Wangxian’s first swordfight. love a show that recognises the inherent homoeroticism of duelling by moonlight
ok, back to Xiyao feelings because look, look, I can appreciate a complex platonic relationship as much as the next person, but their every single interaction here reads as high-key flirting. Meng Yao waiting specially to say goodbye to Lan Xichen! Lan Xichen’s fond little smiles! the unnecessarily Extra bow and Lan Xichen catching it and going ‘no need, we’re equals’ my fricking heart ok the way the camera l i n g e r s on their last vestiges of physical contact as Meng Yao leaves. like. this would be a compelling relationship whether romantic or not, but damn do the directorial choices make it feel like a romance
Untamed watchthrough 2: feelings boogaloo
I was just gonna watch the first couple of episodes to see what I missed while I was scrambling to figure out who everyone was, but uh, let’s be real, I’m not actually planning to stop
below the cut is a sort of condensed liveblog of Things I Have More Emotions About Now (apart from, y’know, everything)
