this is a sensitive topic for me, so i really hate that i have to make this post, but unfortunately it keeps becoming relevant: stop infantilizing hera, and stop making excuses for it.
"well, she's literally four years old" she's been fully conscious with an adult mind for most of that, awake for most of that, and in multiple places at once for most of that. do you think that is comparable to a child's life experience, or is it maybe representative of something else?
i assume you understand why it would be wrong to call lovelace "literally two" because the fact that she is a clone is textually representative of the trauma she's been through. i also assume you understand why hera occasionally making flippant or frustrated comments about her own struggles living as an AI is different from the text telling you who she is or how you should regard her. it's science fiction, and it's a show that uses science fiction concepts in ways that resonate with real ones. the ultimate fact of the matter is that hera could've been in a lab for 30 years, or for 200 years, in a different setting, and be written the exact same way: as a sheltered, isolated adult woman without real life experiences.
hera is not a child or teenager in a natural stage of development. she is an adult who never went through the usual stages of development or life milestones, who has adult friendships and responsibilities, but who feels she is permanently ill-equipped to handle her life because no one ever taught her how, or gave her the space to make mistakes. if you don't understand why this distinction is important in discussing her trauma, that there are real, adult people who feel the same way, people who feel they've only been alive for four years, women who were never girls... then i really don't know what to say to you.
and i guess i have to say it: it's inherently infantilizing to say her peers see her the same way they see an actual child, or to say she needs them to be parental figures, especially eiffel of all people. "adult women have parents too" not ones that are 30 year old men! and parents have responsibilities to children, even adult children, that are different from the responsibilities two unrelated adults who care about each other have. it fundamentally reframes hera's most equal relationship in a way that diminishes her autonomy within it. (and if you're arguing it's all equal anyway, then what does it add? why don't you consider friendship as important?)
i know some people will dismiss that point because i view eiffel and hera romantically, but i've never argued you have to. if you want to go down that road, it says some pretty awful things about the couple of writers and actors who also view it romantically if you think she was meant to be viewed as a child, much less comparable to his child. you're inventing problems that don't canonically exist.
i just don't understand why you would make it about eiffel at all - and eiffel does not have the right to be a parent; the only thing that will heal his relationship with his real actual child is in relation to his real actual child - instead of discussing what a disabled, isolated, traumatized adult might be able to offer a disabled, traumatized kid. isn't the whole point of hera not being like pryce about breaking cycles? why make her a passive figure in her own story when her entire story arc is about taking control of her life?
there's no utility to this line of thought that doesn't further demean and alienate her, while implying she isn't ready to be a fully autonomous adult person. i don't think most people mean to be ableist, but hera is canonically a disabled woman, and i don't like where that line of thought leads. and yes, she's just a fictional character and can't be hurt by it, but everyone brings some real-world biases to how they engage with fiction. she's written as a marginalized adult person, and her womanhood is textually tied to defense of her personhood and autonomy (as well as a parallel to lovelace, also a marginalized woman.) to paraphrase minkowski - "you are going to show [that woman] some goddamned respect."
#wolf 359#w359#hera wolf 359#hera w359#i could say more but frankly i'm sick of this argument. either you get it or you don't#i'm not interested in arguing with people who keep reducing it to shipping and won't understand what i'm saying in good faith#i'll never get over the person who drew her as a child because 'it's the only way her personality makes sense to me'#like really think about the implications of that.#really think about what you're suggesting. do you think hera would actually fit in better with children than with her canon peers?#do you see why that's infantilizing?#or else are you kinda just treating her like she's permanently socially damaged and will never belong anywhere?

Can people stop saying Elriels are changing Elain & Azriel's personalities to make their ship work?
First of all, SJM wrote a bonus chapter and 3 books of buildup in the background for Elriel already. We didn't just make up the fact that they're very into each other - SJM literally wrote that in the books.
We don't have to change anything about them. They are already attracted to each other and interested in each other in the text at this point.
Could we sit here and argue that Azriel sitting in the garden with Elain, Azriel sensing she's missing and in danger when the Cauldron kidnaps her, Elain looking to Azriel for comfort, Elain getting him solstice gifts, Azriel wanting to beg on his knees for a taste of her, Azriel giving her truth teller, Elain kicking the hounds off him, Azriel making everyone wait for her to eat dinner - We can sit here and argue and say those things are "strictly platonic" or "he's an incel who only lusts after her" (not sure how both can be true but okay). We can do that - but it won't change the fact that it is ON THE PAGE. THEIR MUTUAL ATTRACTION is IN THE TEXT.
Cool? Cool.
Next Point: Nobody is changing shit about Elain or Azriel.
It's like the antis saw one post about "oh Elain could be a cool warrior" all the way back in like 2015 and have held onto that like that one grainy af Elucien Facebook comment that one account keeps posting as responses to elriel posts (y'all know who im talking about right 😂).
Allow me to give you a refresher: It is currently 2024. Nobody is trying to make Elain be a warrior. I think most Elriels are of the opinion that we do NOT want ACOSF 2.0.
What we do want to see, is Elain potentially as a spy. AGAIN - not a warrior. This is not changing her personality. She is already a Seer - it is not a stretch to want to see her delve into her powers in the next book to use them to SEE and gather information. Elain is ready to help, she literally says "Find me when you wish to begin."
If people are complaining about fan arts where she's holding a dagger - I'm like 99% positive that dagger is truthteller and you cannot be complaining about an actual canon scene where she has been the only other person to touch that knife in 500 years, apart from Azriel. Not even Mor, his one time love, has touched that knife.
And Elain holding truthteller is in the official ACOTAR coloring book - BTW. So if you have an issue with Elain being depicted with a dagger - take it up with SJM's team.
Let's talk Azriel:
Genuinely not sure what people are saying we are changing about Azriel to better fit Elain?
People bring up the "oh he's too dark for Elain she will shy away from him" um. No. It's literally in the text how Elain calls his scars beautiful and does not balk from him.
Also .. what darkness? I did an entire post on what the hell is Azriel's darkness even and still, nobody had an answer for me because ??
We can't be reducing this man down to a job he took very very reluctantly and clearly hates. He doesn't like torturing people for answers, guys!! Y'all make it sound like his love interest can only work if she's his literal torture assistant or something 😭😭
"Hi azriel, you have a 11 o'clock coming in for the usual water boarding treatment." <tucks hair behind ear and nods earnestly> "and then afterwards, I will wash the blood off your knife and accept your darkness?"
Is that what y'all want 🤨🤨 don't be weird smh
Azriel says it feels wrong to touch Elain because HE FEELS UNDESERVING OF HER?? Have you never read a romance novel? The tortured hero being so reluctant to even touch his love because he's afraid his sins will taint her goodness??
Please people. Listen to like... a Hozier song before you try to understand this man because maybe then you might get a crash course on him. This man is so Hozier coded, it's insane to me that people think of him as some fuckboi incel.
Nobody is changing anything about Azriel and Elain. They are drawn to each other and understand each other without having to say a single word. Their love story is already starting out to be the healthiest: friends to lovers. They have been given a title: death & his lovely fawn.
Their very names mean Azriel "God is my help" or "Angel of Death" and Elain means "Light" or "Fawn" or "God has answered my prayers"
It's already on the pages and if you can't see the writing on the walls, perhaps it's time for a reread my friend.

Like am I the one crazy person in the world or is Zutara, Jinko, Zukka, etc. NOTHING like the spirit of Pocahontas?? Since when did we collectively decide to reduce Zuko’s character to “colonizer” or “John Smith”? And now if we use logical arguments to point out the different nuances in these dynamics we’re just racists that hate natives, regardless of our own backgrounds? Because someone decided this like two days ago and we all have to bow down no questions asked??
TW: Racism, xenophobia, slut-shaming, sexism.
I don't think it is my place to talk about the treatment towards Native Americans because I'm not from the ethnicity, and I'm not even North American.
Nevertheless, @zutarawasrobbed do is Native and she recently shared a very extense Twitter thread with very solid arguments from her part about the ignorance that is calling Zutara a colonized/colonized ship.
Now, about the part of reducing Zuko's character to generic antagonist or white savior is kind of troublesome because primarily... he's not white 🤨.
And I thought we had established that the whole antagonist part was sort of fixed with the redemption arc part 🤷…
But hey, go figure. Most of the time, I don't know what this fandom is thinking.
Neither am I all that interested in knowing, because I'm starting to seriously believe pretty much everyone outside the Zutara fanbase is racist — or at least xenophobes. I always try to not generalize, but there's little to help their case when most of their interactions with Zutarians — or just anyone that dares criticize Bryke 😒 — is stuff like this:
Which is really disturbing considering most Zutara fans are people from minorities.
Or then to come say to POC fans that we probably date our oppressors too for shipping Zutara. (No, there won't be a day when I'm not angry at the people who said this to me. I've had enough abuse in my life to tolerate some more.)
Or refusing to read our comments because we are dark skinned and ship Zutara — or girls. They also refuse to read our comments because we are girls.
Or arguing with East Asian people when the latter's say adult!GAang in TLOK doesn't have East Asian features.
Or saying for us to keep it to ourselves when we are brown-skinned and ship Zutara because they simply don't care.
Or telling us to find some white d*ck to suck. (I'm fairly less angry about this one, considering I got the troll account that said this to me deleted 😏)
Anyways, I better stop before I give y'all nausea.
But sincerely, I like my ATLA canon to be just my fanfictions, art and the wonderful Zutara fancontent. I don't want to feel myself attached to a product people like that enjoy.
#zutara#katara#zuko#anti atla#see what antis did?!#they made me publish something anti atla!#anti bryke because damn right i blame them for this!
