the whole chip on telemachus' shoulder in the odyssey isn't that he's a helpless little kid. it's that he is a man, he should be treated like a man, but he can't take up the role he's entitled to. and because of it he resents not only the suitors, but also both of his parents. in odysseus' case the outward resentment seems to resolve itself along with the doubt of his existence, when athena reveals him; in penelope's it never really does. by the time of their last scene together telemachus still finds her hard to understand and disrespects her. he isn't closer to her because his father was absent. the war and deferred homecoming separated the two of them as much as it did odysseus and his homeland

idea: (that really leans into the whole 'crack treated seriously' angle)

ares overhears zeus telling other gods about how poseidon is scared of ody and thinks it's the Funniest Thing Ever (bc ares and poseidon hate each other lol)

he then finds out about the whole 'fake friends bc blackmail to make telemachus happy' and goes 'yk normally i dont like mind games but this is also hilarious' and then joins in

athena: ares why are you here

ares: i heard that poseidon was scared of odysseus and Had to know more.

athena: then why are you STILL here

ares: look im normally anti-mind-games but this is so funny. please let me help

athena: you wouldn't know where to start...but fine. once. because it is rather humorous

ares: 'rather humorous' you encourage it

hey, hi, hello! i'm so so so sorry for such a late reply! (╥﹏╥) *shakes fist at tumblr for the lack of notifs* oh ares (and even maybe other gods) definitely get involved at some point 1. because yes seeing the mighty god of the seas (poseidon) at the beck and call of the mortal who handed his godly ass to him? someone bring the popcorn! but also 2. they're also interested/curious in said mortal, because hello? everyone at this point has heard/known of what ody got up to in the trojan war and then of course his whole journey home. they need to take a closer look themselves (what they didn't realise is that once telemachus has his sights set on making 'new friends' / meeting his fathers 'god friends' there is no escaping)
