Tumblr media
Hey guys...
I’m not very active on tumblr but I wanted to repost this thread I made on twitter today because this is slightly more public a forum. Since I’ve solidly established myself as a NSFW fan content producer, I wanted to express some of the discomforts I’ve had with this side of the fandom.
The standards I hold myself to seem high. I know this. But this is a fandom centered around a TV show for young children and fandom space that many people who are repulsed by adult themes like sex and violence have embraced. That is not something I take lightly. I am especially careful about a) where I share NSFW content b) prefacing NSFW content with warnings c) depicting NSFW content with care.
First of all, all my social media where I discuss NSFW content is in a locked twitter account. I only accept followers from people who are 18+ and out of high school. I do not want to discuss sexual things with children or where children can see it. This is not hard to do. There's no reason I should be discussing NSFW things with children on the internet. It’s not that sex is a terrible terrible thing, its just that I’m not their parent or their peer. I have no business talking to children about that stuff.
I question the morality of posting this content where people can find it by accident. There should not be the possibility of scrolling through the main character tags and finding NSFW content, especially violent NSFW content. I don’t think any of us want to be the MLP fandom and ruin google searches for children. Just please. Please tag only as #lazycity and ship tags. Please.
The next part is... hard to talk about... I’ve been keeping my nose down because I don’t want alienate myself from the fandom. I’m at the point where I don’t really care about this anymore. I’ve got my friends. I’ve got my readers. I’m okay with losing some and I’m hopeful that this can be dialogue and not a lecture. (I welcome messages, replies, etc if you wanna talk this out with someone!!) I’m not here to point fingers or name names. This isn’t one person. This is fandom culture.
I know that people have violent fantasies. I'm not saying those are wrong. People explore these fantasies in safe and consensual ways in real life all the time. There are differences between that and what I’m seeing in this fandom.
In real life, there is an understanding that whatever your kink is, you’re all good as long as all people involved consent to the sexual act. I know it can get more complicated than this, but this is the general rule and its a rule I support, including with violent and sexual assault fantasies.
Fiction is a little different. You can either establish in text that it’s a fantasy or you can rely on the reader to understand that since this is fiction, no one is being harmed and the reader is consenting out of text to take a part in this fantasy.
My personal philosophy for dabbling into violent/taboo sexual themes in fan-produced content is that consent needs to be established in text. It is irresponsible to indulge your rape fantasy in a public space unless you establish that both characters consent. Why? Because you are depicting a character who you do not own being sexually assaulted. These characters are beloved by many, and should be treated with care.
Sportacus and Robbie roleplay with each other in canon literally all the time. I don’t think it’s too much of stretch for people to depict them as roleplaying sexual fantasies? I’m not asking that you delete all your fic/art/blogs/twitters just... perhaps consider what I’m saying. Consider some minor tweaks. Consider in text consent in your future works. And please please PLEASE keep your NSFW content out of the main tags.
