This is (probably) the last I will say about this. But I spent last night watching clips of mean girls (2024) on youtube and I mean. Like it was fine I guess. I think it's just like if you're going to make a movie musical, then it should be a musical and I really feel like it just didn't have the spirit. It seemed to be half a tentative musical, and half a remake of the original movie. Like in the lunchroom at the beginning, by taking out Here's Where You Belong made it feel like a remake, as well as them verbally introducing Gretchen and Karen. And then Regina appears and starts singing her part of Meet the Plastics but the thing is, is that comes across as awkwardly placed because there was no other song in that scene. If you're making a musical, it should be unapologetically musical. It should have been a huge moment of introducing the plastics with the full version and instead it was just Some Other lunch table with nothing special about it that would have drawn Cady's attention towards it. If I'm expecting a musical I want to see so much singing and dancing just embedded into the plot, but here it almost seemed awkward. And I just Did Not enjoy Revenge Party. That whole sequence of people being in the hallway with the bright colours and what was meant to be a party vibe honestly made me feel like I was watching a weird TV commercial. I did like though how in the candy cane part the camera was angled as if to be Glen coco, so we never actually see Glen coco. That moment gets my stamp of approval.
And I do think it makes sense for the whole setting to be modernized with the addition of social media etc that obviously wasn't in the original movie. But I personally didn't enjoy having the 'phone screen' sequences, like in Cautionary Tale, the beginning of Sexy, and all the clips of people like recording their own comments on things throughout. I just don't enjoy that kind of thing and just wasn't for me. Actually. The only time I did think it worked and added something was in revenge part when all the girls are filming themselves with the dripping eyeliner look to be like Regina. That was valid.
I said it before but I also just really did not enjoy the pop versions of the songs. I don't like it when the inflections (is that the right word) change while singing cover versions just to be different and there was so much of that. It was especially prevalent in Apex Predator and just made it not enjoyable. I liked the part though when Regina saw some girl sitting with the guy Gretchen liked and was like absolutely not, and got her to leave. I was like aw she does care. That was cute. And I take back my previous comment about liking this version of Sexy because (update) I am not a fan. Not even just because of the phone thing at the beginning but hearing it again I was like this is not the right vibes. One song I really like is I'd Rather Be Me, and this is one that I think wasn't changed too much from the original but, again, it just didn't have the feel to it like I was watching a musical with the way it was filmed/choreographed/blocked/you know what I'm trying to say. And in that scene as well, it did feel very remake-ish but I think too that when you have such iconic part like the 'she doesn't even go here' it's difficult. Because in the original movie it's partially so unexpected which is why it hit so hard and now for a remake, everyone is anticipating it happening so it would be really hard for it to not fall short. That girl though who doesn't go there being at the school for a track meet makes so much sense though and I applaud them for that. In the original, literally who is that girl.
But yeah. See, in musical movies like mamma mia and hairspray and enchanted, the aspect of it being a musical is really leaned into. The characters start singing and dancing spontaneously but it's done in an unapologetic and fun way. It's just part of that movie's universe that That happens and everyone is on board and goes along with it. It's real, everyday life for the characters. Where in this movie it seemed calculated and awkward. I think with it being half remake half musical is where it got lost because if they had leaned all the way into it being a musical it would have worked so much better. Include ALL the songs so that the plot is enhanced by the music. The plot and the songs should be walking hand in hand. Here it was like a movie with some songs sprinkled throughout. I should not have listened to the soundtrack wondering what happened to all the songs and why it was so short. That was red flag numero uno.
In conclusion, this was much longer than intended.

i could not help myself....
also these clips were taken from various videos from here and youtube since nick and netflix wouldn't let me screen record so i'm sorry </3
ramble undercut!
this is a lot of nonsense so i apologize
i don't have many thoughts but i do know that this is one of the best recent animated series i've seen in such a long time. i'm someone who typically just rewatched the same four series and call it a day, that being code lyoko, digimon, wakfu, and whatever i might end up hyperfixating on suddenly. i don't watch new animated series often unless it's with friends, young justice being the only one i actively watched and enjoyed. i don't think it's the best since rewatching rottmnt but it's definitely really good! i love both series separately and for their own reasons, YJ for the more serious and grim tones and ROTTMNT for literally everything. i'm really glad to be able to even watch this series and that it's on netflix, i had never watched season 2 because i just simply forgot like an idiot and then the movie came out! and so i binge rewatched the series after watching the movie with a friend and the movie was just fantastic! i won't get into any spoilers but genuinely it lived up to the hype and i could only ask for me! i showed a bit of the series through clips, images, and conversation to my sibling and they seemed intrigued by it which may not mean much but we're both adults, me being 18 and them going to be 22 and doesn't usually engage in things i like with interest. being able to find a space to just talk about this series means the world, and expressing things i love is something i find most meaningful. the fandom genuinely feels like such a safe space. minus how i still don't know if using the hearts paired (❤️💙💜🧡) is a shipping thing or just something fans do for support, i've had nothing but positive experiences so far! i haven't had this much fun with a series to this extent in a while and it's genuinely just so nice. my dad was huge into TMNT when it first came out and i've talked to him about the series before, he seemed more confused and entertained by the zaniness of it than wanting to sit down and watch it but hey! it's still meaningful to me! also?? the representation?? CANON autistic donnie and CANON adhd mikey?? in MY tmnt show? hell yeah !!!! it makes me so happy to be able to actually feel security in relating to characters and not feel like it's insulting? this video is best of talking about what i mean so i genuinely do think you should give it a watch or listen!! anyways i guess what i'm saying is i love ROTTMNT and i cannot recommend it enough nor will i shut up about it right now
