#i'm just angry that dctv ruined everything

                          john constantine headcanons / 001. 

               BECAUSE THE CONSTANTINE SHOW ended on such a cliffhanger, there was never any time to complete his story, which is why they’re trying to shoe-horn it into legends. because of my beliefs about john’s story & character development, i’m going to be rewriting a lot of john’s timeline to iron out inconsistencies & have his story come to an end. interactions with john will be in this verse of events by default, unless plotted otherwise. 

               BEFORE NEWCASTLE, & BEFORE the group had really even formed, john was attempting to collect as many magical items as he could, wanting to become the most powerful warlock he could, possibly ever. that led him to the island of lian yu, to find the horus staff, where he encountered oliver queen. there was no mention of being on the side of the angels, because newcastle hadn’t happened yet. he takes oliver & finds the staff, taking the scroll inside & giving oliver a nasty bruise to take back to the camp. now he knows the name oliver queen though, & that’s something he’ll happily keep in his back pocket. 

               AT NEWCASTLE, THE GROUP failed to save astra, a weight that john would hold for as long as he lived. he self admitted to a psychiatric hospital, hoping that his mind wouldn’t be his anymore, & mostly hoping that he would never have to have the responsibility again, the one he’d failed. 

               AFTER THE MESSAGE THAT liv was going to die, john signed himself out, knowing that he never could escape from the world he’d brought himself into. the only solution was to stand & fight back against what was happening. as he saved liv, he learned that something bigger was coming, & it was spreading all across the country. so he pushed liv away, ready to start the journey to save everyone he could. he originally thought he was doing it to redeem himself -- that saving the lives of many would help the loss of one. but he knew better, & eventually his morality changed to saving others because he wanted to, despite the grouchy exterior. 

               JOHN NEVER WARMED UP to manny. he never trusted him, because the idea of heaven versus hell wasn’t something he wanted to stick his nose into, though he knew he probably would have to. still, he attempted to gain the trust of the angel, in order to stop the darkness. 

               SOMEWHERE DURING THIS TIME, oliver queen gave john a call, asking for help after all this time. john couldn’t help but agree to the smiling face of the queen -- plus, he owed oliver one. so he went, saving the soul of sara lance in the process, before heading back, a bigger mission on his mind than darhk, though the thought of such a powerful man in the city being a scary one. he wished oliver luck, before leaving to follow another lead given to him by the angel. 

               CONSTANTINE BEGAN TO GROW more & more suspicious of the angel, until eventually his suspicions were confirmed that he was in fact the leader of the brujeria. the hadn’t been wiped out because of a traitor in god’s ranks, that was clear to john now. but the next time he met with manny, he pretended to know nothing, promising to follow another one of manny’s false leads to stop the darkness. 

               AFTER THAT MEETING, JOHN asked chas & zed to prepare a ritual with him. with this ritual, he pushed his soul past the realm of the living, into hell itself. it was a wasteland -- red skies with swirling winds of biting sand, discarded bodies & machines littering a long highway road seeming to stop at a grant castle built of shadows themselves. on his way walking there, a figure spoke, one he recognized immediately. it was lucifer, someone who’d been after his soul for a very long time. lucifer offered him a deal -- his help saving the world, or the soul of astra, the little girl he’d failed so long ago. 

               JOHN CHOSE ASTRA, SOMETHING he would do again & again, no matter the cost. 

               WHEN HE GOT BACK from what he thought was a five minute conversation, hours had seemed to have gone by, & the thought of how long astra was in hell for now truly dawning on him. but she was right next to him, & chas knew immediately what he’d given up to save the girl. a fight ensued, because john had forsaken the earth for one girl. 

               EVEN WITHOUT LUCIFER ON his side, the one man he knew would & could truly help him, john went to see manny, to confront him for his leadership of the brujeria. it was a dangerous idea, one he didn’t tell chas or zed about because he knew they’d try to stop him. alone, he attempted to stop manny, but he was too weak, eventually being defeated. but as he started to slip away, a figure rose up to help him. lucifer himself. time froze for a second, as lucifer said that everything previous had been a test, & the two of them defeated manny, john dealing the final blow with his bare hands. 

               A TENUOUS RELATIONSHIP WITH lucifer was formed, but the most important thing to john was that he got to keep astra. she stayed by his side as the devil retreated back to hell. the promise that john’s soul would have never gone to heaven anyways -- now at least he’d confirmed his placement. 

               WITH THE WAR OVER, john could finally rest. he had a lot of work ahead of him to make sure astra was okay ( after 180 years of hell, it wouldn’t be easy to get her back to the nine year old girl she once was ). 

               WHEN HE GOT THE call from sara lance, the girl who’s soul he’d saved, asking him to come & deal with a demon problem, he happily agreed to help. after all, he had a lot more free time on his hands now that the rising darkness had been taken care of. he doesn’t stay on the waverider, at least not for great amounts of time, because he has something like a daughter back home, as well as two great friends who’d truly supported him. 

               NOW MASTER OF THE dark arts, constantine has a lot on his chest to deal with, but he knows that he wants to help people as much as possible. he always has.
