YEAH!! You're very much on point with everything. Siding with Emet starts looking appealing to Vivi at some point, but it's also the final test of his moral alignment. Will he go from chaotic neutral to neutral evil? Can he make THE choice? He sucks at making big choices. He'd rather avoid them forever. But if he shuts his eyes hard enough and just doesn't look back and takes that damned step, maybe-

One of THE things that drives Vivi away from Emet is when he finds out about Azem, (un)fortunately Vivi's sense of identity has always been strong, he's present and confident, he's always been loved as he is, never had a reason to want to become someone else (hence he turns down Feo Ul's offer, at least takes time to think). Emet basically gets an ultimatum to accept Vivi in his current iteration, and we may guess how that goes.
