The Other Wiki defines small talk, or phatic communication, as "Conversation for its own sake", versus conversation to transmit useful information. In many societies it serves as a useful social function, but this guy doesn't enjoy taking part in it.

Maybe he's The Quiet One or the Aloof Ally, maybe he has a laser focus on a single goal, maybe he's completely stressed out, or maybe he's German. Whatever the case, he'd rather talk about something meaningful or nothing at all, than Talk About the Weather. Also commonly comes up with people who have an Ambiguous Disorder, Emotionless Girls, Sugar-and-Ice Personality, and, well, anything to do with introversion.

For some reason, the character is mostly ignorant of and often confused by common social conventions and behaviors. They usually grasp enough to minimally function around other people most of the time, but any circumstances outside of their limited experience fluster, puzzle, or (at worst) upset or enrage them.

Someone with no social skills is not necessarily stupid—just unfamiliar with how human beings act around each other. Consequently, they will tend to be blunt, straightforward, and Brutally Honest. They will expect everyone else to be totally honest, too. From a writing point of view they are an asset: they say things that everyone is thinking but no one would dare say out loud.

A person (usually The Hero) has her or his motivation built around protecting another person. Most of the time, it's his or her Love Interest, but it could also be her or his sibling/s, or friends, or child(ren), or parents/parental figure.

big brother instinct: peter pevensie; jon snow

One very common way to establish that a male (or increasingly frequently female) character is a Nice Guy(even if the niceness is hidden under a gruff exterior) is to give them an instinctive desire to be a respectable big sibling to smaller or younger characters (in more cases female than male). These other characters may be truly younger siblings, or they may be completely unrelated, or even older, but the feeling is the same: to act as their protector.The Big Brother Instinct serves to explain fan attraction to Moe tropes and devices as an emotional, rather than sexual, response. There seems to be something inherently comforting to an awkward male about being looked up to by a younger girl for support. Therefore, Moe can be wish fulfillment about taking a "big brother role" instead of about being a Love Interest. Rather amusingly, it's also quite often that the trope gets inverted, and the younger sibling wants to protect the older instead. Hilarity Ensues when both versions happen at the same time.
