#i'm also not a huge fan of 'cast lauging at xyz'-style subtitles when all you'd need to convey the auditory information is 'cast laughing'

not particularly liking it when the subtitles on d20 get fancy with describing sounds makes me feel like such a buzzkill but also. subtitles should be accessible to the people who get the most use out of subtitles actually and some of these words and phrases are getting so fucking complicated
#dimension 20#mentopolis#i say this as a hard of hearing person who's not great at paying attention and speaks english as a second language#(aka very much a person subtitles are primarily intended for):#the only time you should be using a word like 'ebullient' in subtitles is if someone says it#you do not need that word to describe laughter. ever. like that should be obvious?#it just makes what could have been 'joyful laughter' or whatever 10x harder to read and process quickly :/#i'm also not a huge fan of 'cast lauging at xyz'-style subtitles when all you'd need to convey the auditory information is 'cast laughing'#but i suspect that that's an issue which different people who know things about subtitling might have different opinions on#like i've noticed different styles of audio description where some are very strict about only describing what's visible on screen#and others use character names in the audio descriptions before they've actually been introduced by name#and again i prefer the former but i have to concede that clearly opinions and practices differ and it's not black and white#but not making the subtitles more complicated than they need to be to accurately convey the audio feels pretty straightforward to me
