Sure! Every now and then I'll deep-dive into the world of free books online, so these are from a mish-mash of different places. I have collected a bunch of books in this way over the past few years, but usually never get around to reading them. I'd like to change that this year and see if anything I learn ends up helping me.
(As an aside, I also grab a bunch of free books to do with specific subjects I want to know more about. They're not books about writing, but it's a great way to get info for your fiction books.)
The list is pretty long, so I'll put it under the cut.
From Project Gutenberg:
The Writing of Fiction by Edith Wharton
Fiction Writers on Fiction Writing by Arthur Sullivant Hoffman
How to Write a Novel: A Practical Guide to the Art of Fiction
Aspects of the novel by E. M. Forster
The Craft of Fiction by Percy Lubbock
The Technique of Fiction Writing by Robert Saunders Dowst
These Project Gutenberg books might be old, but they're great resources from the quick skims I have had so far.
From The Open University:
Start writing fiction
Start writing fiction: characters and stories
Technically the two above are courses, but you can download each course as a PDF/epub/doc, which is what I did.
From Writers Helping Writers:
Free Show Don't Tell Pro Pack (a sampler of all their books!)
and honestly they have so many good resources you should just go to their website and check out their worksheets
From One Stop for Writers:
Storyteller's Roadmap: How to Plan a Story, How to Write a Story, and How to Revise a Story (technically not a downloadable book, but structured like an online textbook)
From Nicole at InkWellSpills:
The Worldbuilding Workbook
The rest of the books that will be listed are from various ebook apps and websites. These were all free when I downloaded them, and most probably still are, but let me know if that has changed for any of them. I couldn't find a way to link these but you should be able to search the author's names on the apps and find these books.
From the Kobo app:
Art & Craft of Writing: Secret Advice for Writers by Victoria Mixon
Four Seasons of Creative Writing: 1000 prompts to stop writer's block by Bryan Cohen
How to Improve Your Writing by Mason Engels
Little Book of Tips for Descriptive Writing by Patti Roberts
My Guide to Storytelling by Aron Chistensen
The Jeffrey Archer Short Story Challenge Collection
The Tidy Guide to Writing a Novel by Rachel Aukes
Writing Tips by Merrie Destefano
Yes, You Can Write! by Bryan Collins
From the Kindle app:
Screenwriting: Creative Labor and Professional Practice by Bridget Conor
The Audiobook Book by Renea Mason, Noah Michael Levine, and Erin Deward
The Plot Thickens: 8 Ways to Bring Fiction to Life by Noah Lukeman
10 Secrets to a Bestseller: An Author's Guide to Self-Publishing by Tim McConnehey
You Are An Author: So Write Your Book Already by Matt Rudnitsky
The Author Startup by Ray Brehn
Show, Don't Tell: How to write vivid descriptions, handle backstory, and describe your characters' emotions by Sandra Gerth
Write Your Book on the Side by Hassan Osman
As far as I know, none of these were AI-generated, but if I overlooked something, please let me know!
Anyway, that's pretty much it for now! I have other books, but some are on an old PC, and others are very specific to my interests (like the OER Write or Left creative writing textbook or the OER Short Fiction Unit) but if you want a full mega list of a bunch of amazing resources, let me know).
Hope that helps!
Just got a bunch of free books on writing. I'm gonna check them all out throughout the year and see what advice and lessons and tips really stick with me 📚
