Hey bpp! This is maybe a weird question but why do men like songs like idle's Tomboy or other girl crush songs that seem to have a negative view of men? Tomboy was even a hit with the gp so I'm wondering why because shouldn't Korean men especially not really be into songs like that?
**
Hi Anon,
I have no idea lol.
Actually, I do have one idea. I thought about starting my answer being all cheeky and going, "Have you heard about male masochism being a common feature in East Asian cultures?"
Because, believe it or not, this is a real thing. It's most prevalent in Japan I think (I recall having drunken philosophical debates in uni on how the self-flagellation and masochism prominent in Japanese film and literature throughout the latter half of the 20th century, was a reflection of colonial and Western Imperialistic conquest in Asia... or something to that effect). I recall reading an academic paper years ago on how Chinese and South Korean propaganda media against Japanese occupation was decidedly masochistic and how it's possible that's a trait common in parts of the male population today... I'm nearly certain some academic somewhere has written extensively about it but I can't be arsed to dig it up now (if you're curious Anon, let me know and I'll look it up).
So, it could be plain old masochism Anon.
Or it could be that k-pop groups usually do a concept for the concept's sake, and so these men don't take any of the sentiments expressed in the songs seriously. Which would be a shame, because I-Dle is actually one of a handful of girl groups where some members participate in the song-writing process. But it's also true the Girl Crush concept is the most popular concept for girl groups in k-pop, and this concept is switched out and recycled every other comeback. Or at the very least, toned down several degrees, and the girl groups still marketed and presented in a way that also appeals to the male gaze.
Take for instance how Idle's Tomboy at the start of this year..
*
...compares to their latest comeback (October 17th):
*
There could still be 'girl crush' or subversive elements in Nxde's concept even though its styling and presentation has changed dramatically from Tomboy.
There's also the possibility that most of the support I-Dle is getting from gp, comes primarily from women. Many younger South Korean men are staunchly anti-feminist, so while technically liking a song isn't a big deal and maybe men just happen to like I-Dle's local radio hit Tomboy, the nature of gender dynamics in Korea right now is so weird I think you're right to ask this question Anon.
But I really don't know the answer. Your guess is as good as mine.

heyyy~ I hope it's okay to send you this but I just want to tell you how I feel less alone knowing I'm not the only having issues with butter and dynamite. ๐๐ we really have the same views, butter could be great (actually a lot of it IS great) but ...the lyrics.....have me cringing in agony. it's almost worse than dynamite for me. I don't understand the entire fandom goes along with it like???? do they not see the sheer GAP in lyrical quality? I wish I could enjoy simple brainless joys but I just can't listen to butter. I used to instant love every BTS song but now...I almost don't know how to cope :( it makes me so sad to hear them sing these terrible lyrics. I guess I'll wait for the day they make a song in English that's as poetic and deep and meaningful as their Korean ones. ๐๐ I tried to keep this short ๐๐!! I hope you have a good day ๐๐
hiiiii!! my ask is always open!๐
I believe there are many people who think alike but they're usually keeping it to themselves cuz these days everyone is looking to get offended so they can jump at your throat. So yeah, it can definitely feel isolating when "you don't see what other people see in xyz".
I honestly don't have a straightforward answer for the hype because I believe most people are just biased and (or) enjoy the song and it's nothing wrong with that. However, what bothers me sometimes is the lack of constructive criticism! I can't stand fake support. Not everything is amazing, not everything is fire.
Idk how long have you been their fan but I noticed among us veterans hahah that our BTS honeymoon phase finished a long time ago and now we're just chilling and minding our own business. The hype is gone, it's just vibes or lack of vibes so some people left. BTS gained a lot of new fans in the past 2 years and I believe most of them are still in the honeymoon phase (no matter what kind of content BTS release it's amazing, GIMME MORE). Half of these days (western) popular songs are meh to me. I can't stand most of them. At the end of the day, it's about your music taste and what type of songs you enjoy and that's it.
in conclusion their Korean lyrics >>>> English lyrics
#ask#anon#๐๐#hope you have aย lovely day!!#i also canโt stand dynamite hahahh#everything you said SAAAAAME#butter is okay but still a NO for me cuz of the lyrics
