These plots lines are so STUPID. It’s like they hired Ryan Murphy as a writer. ALL I WANT IS CAPTAIN SWAN!! And for Neal to squashed when the Jolly Roger accidentally lands on him…
See, I appreciate that they focused so much on the foreshadowing and the minute details that are really pretty brilliant. I mean, it shows that they at least have a goddamn plan for how to carry the story through the way Glee never did. However, they've done this at the expense of the story. I feel like you've gotta handle these kinds of twists in a strategic manner not only to benefit the story but also the regulation of viewership. When you woo someone, you do it in steady streams, not just one giant dumping of affection because you're gonna run out of ammo real quick. And while I understand that they want to put a new spin on characters, but the more these kind of twists happen, the deeper they're digging their hole.
They've also done it at the expense of dialogue. I am not the only one who's cringed at some unnatural dialogue in this show, especially in EF scenes. They've got no excuse--they cannot say that because it's in a different land, they wouldn't have the same speech patterns or vernacular. That's bullshit because you've got other period movies and shows that capture natural dialogue so much better. Even Hook's had a line or two that sounds kind of awkward, and still no excuse for that--Pirates of the Motherfucking Caribbean, ladies and gents. They need to fix that shit.
Also, I ship Captain Swan hardcore, yo, but that's not the only reason why I watch the show. I have gotten invested in all of these other characters--Regina, Rumple, even Neal. I hate how badly he fucked up Emma and how shitty he's treated her since he's been back, but I also empathize with him because of how fucked over he was when he was younger. And while I understand that's not a good excuse for someone to be an asshole, I also understand how difficult it can be to break a pattern when it's all you've ever known. But he and Rumple have done a damn good job trying to redeem themselves by working to save Henry, and here's to hoping that Neal especially won't be as much of a raging fuckturd as he was 11 years ago.
The thing is, I really hated him in the beginning too. He looked like a goddamn bum, and I wondered what the hell Emma was thinking when she started running with him. I also get how the writers portrayed his character to be a fairly shitty person, but I think he's getting better because of Henry. And as much as I want to hate him, I also can't and don't want to. The more we sort of alienate characters and refuse to see any sort of good in them, the more we taint our enjoyment of something. It's like Puckleberry Finn all over again, only this ship is sailing itself and Neal isn't the biggest buttmunch to ever grace a stage and a football field. I will acknowledge wholeheartedly that Neal is an asshole and he will never be good for Emma, but I will also stand by him and say that he's done his damn best for his son, much better than Rumple and Pan and Milah.
Call it PTSD from Glee, but hating characters and wanting the worst fate possible is just such bad juju and more effort than its worth.
