“student loans should be cancelled/forgiven/etc.”
“you shouldn’t have taken out the loans if you can’t afford it”
first of all, i went to college to have more opportunities than my parents. to be able to // hopefully // make more money and live more comfortably than they did. it is not my fault that i wasn’t given a huge allowance or savings account to pay for something as expensive as college. my parents didn’t have the money to give to me to allow me the best opportunity to pay for college (or any future plans for that matter)
secondly, i have been working since i was legally allowed to (14 years old aka 8 years now). and again, i had to pay for college completely on my own (as well as basic living expenses such as rent, food, clothing, hygiene products, car expenses (gas, insurance, maintenance...) etc.). being pay minimum wage (especially in my state) does not allow me to be able to pay for these things I need and save up for college.
thirdly, the cost of college, especially in the united states, is extremely overpriced. the tuition and FEES associated with attending any sort of post-secondary education is grossly inflated. and the prices just keep going up every year with no sign of slowing down or stopping.
finally, the point of a loan is to get money THAT YOU DON’T HAVE CURRENTLY to pay for something that you need/want that requires it UPFRONT
saying that i shouldn’t have taken loans out if I can’t afford it is basically saying that my future is not worth investing into because i was not born into a wealthy (or well-off) family. based on this opinion, the only people who should further their education are people born with families with money (enough money to put their children through years of higher education + the living expenses of attending these institutions). you are gatekeeping college (and education in general) away from lower middle and lower class teens and young adults, obviously continuing the cycle of the poor getting more poor, and the rich becoming more rich.
“getting rid of student debut isn’t fair to the people who have already paid their loans off”
oh yeah? so you don’t want any life-saving medicine bc it isn’t fair to the people who have died from it in the past????? you literally make no sense with that logic. are we not supposed to advance as a society anymore? go back to the stone age? why do you have a car? why do you have electricity in your home? why do you use the internet???? it isn’t fair to the people that didn’t have it before!!!
just because i made the decision to attend college despite not having the funds to pay it up front does not mean i should have been denied acceptance to my university OR the loans i had to take out. student loans should be forgiven because the amount of debt i am in (and will continue to be in for a LONG TIME) is astronomical and frankly unethical. if it is not forgiven by the time that i pay my loans off, i will still support it bc it holds so many amazing, smart people back. just bc you were born into privilege doesn’t mean you are more worthy of a bright, happy future.
