location: outside the Marine Research Center
time: morning
The good thing about working at the Marine Research Center was that it was close by to where he lived, they let him borrow a scooter to get to, from and around the place. He had been cruising on his way to work when he saw one of the sirens from the files he had gathered. He'd seen her around and heard her name but never really got to talk to her. He slowed down as he watched her, unsure of what she wanted or what she planned to do. Now, it probably wasn’t the smartest move, but he honestly wondered what it would be like to sneak up to a siren captain. He learned how fast their reflexes were and how adept they were in battle, and he was curious.
Walking with his scooter trailing along at his side, he approached her with caution. “Excuse me!” He called out loudly, hoping he’d startle her. “May I help you? You seem lost. I was actually on my way to work at the Marine Research Center. Did you wanna check it out? I can take you around the front and help you get a ticket to check the place out. We have cool marine rescue animals and research labs that are open for viewing to the public.”

Gabi and Gemma had agreed to meet up on occasion. It was helpful to have the siren group text messaging chats, but those could become fraught with chaos. Sometimes, Gabi could not control herself but to say something foolish in there, but she seriously lacked friends on land, and it was getting to her. She didn’t know how to make anybody like her up here.
For today, it was just her and Gemma, and Gabi had more in the way of questions than answers. “Hello. Before we get started with the actual discussion, would you be able to help me with something? I understand that you took a great many precautions when you prepared to go on land, but the extent of which, I’m not really sure about. Elistra mentioned fake identification papers, but I don’t want to go through her if I don’t have to. I don’t even know how old I look. How old did you put on yours? Where did you get your papers?” Her questions were more tentative than usual- less demanding.

Location: Starbeach cafe
Closed starter for @gemmawalker
Blending in with the rest of Port Vale wasn’t as hard a task for Lena as it was for other sirens. It was a façade she knew well and the lines between pretending to be human and feeling human had blurred over the years. One month had passed since she arrived, and she’d been so occupied with building an alibi at the Marine Research Center that she barely had time for anything else. Lena wondered if she really needed to try as hard as she did. It seemed that no one suspected her while other strange people wandered around town. Could they be any more obvious? She thought to herself as she watched a person walk past the cafe window. They had a wide-eyed expression on their face and to the untrained eye one could mistake them for a tourist in awe of the scenery. They couldn’t fool Lena for even moment. She knew that wide eyed stare all too well because she looked that way when she first came onto land. The human world was overwhelming to the heightened senses of a mermaid or siren, it was hard to contain the awe when first experiencing it all. She rolled her dark eyes and shifted her attention back to the book that lay open on the table before her. It was her first day off since arriving and she couldn’t think of a better way to spend it than a hot cup of coffee and a good book. Lena also figured the Starbeach cafe would be a good spot to people watch and possibly do a little snooping later. A figure stepped in at the corner of her peripheral, her eyes took a moment to leave the pages of her book before putting in her order. “I’ll have a cappuccino please.” It was only after she finished speaking that she noticed who was standing beside her. Gemma. Lena noted that she looked somewhat unhappy. It was still nice to see a familiar face, she nearly smiled as she put down her book but refrained instead. “I think I’ll also grab a bite to eat. What food is good here? It seems like this place is popular among the townspeople for the food.”

ASSYRIA CHRONICLES - 001
1. 21. 2022.
I’m back! You may not have missed me (or noticed I was gone), but I have definitely missed you. So much so, that I have brought back all sorts of valuable updates, reports, information, and secrets from Assyria to share with you all. Please keep in mind; this is all just the chatter in the sea, but I’ve made sure to validate each report personally. Let’s just dive right in, shall we?
A pod of seals brought gifts to the Coral Sea; an abundance of fish & other seafood treats from faraway lands, beautifully adorned armor and delicate trinkets, as well as a mysterious locked box without a key. It is seemingly impossible to open no matter how hard it is smashed into rocks. Since receiving these gifts, any sirens within the Coral Sea saw immediate with health, if they had been previously been feeling under the weather.
In sadder news, the first of Assyrian royalty has gotten sick, though it seems to be a mild case - Isla Marin is showing symptoms of the illness, and has been highly advised to stay out of the water, at all costs. More information has come to light on the sickness itself, showing that the sick sirens and mermaids seem to improve when in human form, and worsen when in their natural form. The sick mermaids have began to see dark spots in their gemstones/pearls and nightmares have began to be reported among the ill, as well.
Some believe these dreams have something to do with the ever-growing threat of darkness terrorizing the Assyrian realms... but you didn’t hear that from me!
An interesting new plant has began to grow in the areas of the Antarctic and Artic kingdoms, where icebergs have melted and the water has been changing. Mermaids from each kingdom are bringing the foliage to their respective Princesses; and they hope their rulers can learn more for them here in town.
In the Indian Ocean, 3 sirens from the Caribbean Sea went missing - they were passing through, according to the reports from mermaids on guard, and when seen, swam away quickly and seemingly just disappeared. More reports of an odd, moving darkness in the outer edge of the Indian Ocean, where the Caribbean sirens were last sighted, have been rumored. A warning has been issued for everyone to stay together and stay diligent. The mermaids who were patrolling that area have all fallen ill, black specs in their pearls. Many have taken to land to recover.
A lot of the Caribbean Sea sirens are suspicious of the Indian Ocean mermaids... if you ask me, they aren’t too sure about the ‘disappearance’ theory.
One of the outer boroughs of the North Pacific kingdom had a minor disaster; it was brushed by the elusive darkness, killing any vegetation in it’s path, and the mermaids who lived there have had to move closer to the sea capitol for food, as the fish have became scarce in the place where the darkness hovered. Mermaids in the royal court are growing restless and uneasy in the absence of their princess.
A small number of Black Sea sirens have left their territory and have been traveling across land towards the Baltic Sea; Unclaimed territory that has loose ownership to the North Atlantic, but is not currently guarded. Though officially proclaimed as merely an exploration mission, rumors are that the Black Sea sirens hope to establish a new territory separate from the Black Sea.
I overheard two South Pacific mermaids saying that maybe they have the right idea to flee and start their own thing. Could it be true that even mermaids are beginning to doubt the monarchy?
PENNED BY ECHO.

“I’m going home-”
With the turning of the year, came a turning point for Isidore Delgado. Though the building blocks for a new man had been being laid ever since early December, as his lies unraveled and his secrets spilled out for his loved ones to see; it was in the weeks that followed the beginning of the end, that a beginning truly began.
Isidore was used to being alone; the sea, in it’s entirety, is large and never-ending. All the waters in the world join together at some point, and when the centuries pass you by without heed, it’s easy to feel like a singular speck in a brutally wide world. Loneliness and isolation and absence have not been new concepts to him for half a millennia.
No, what was new for Isidore, was the experience of feeling it once again. He hadn’t noticed how easily he fell into the routine of comfortability in Port Vale, but the moment any piece was missing, he felt like a part of himself had gotten lost in the process. Emilia was scheduling herself opposite of Isidore, and the glance at the back of her head as she ducked out as he was coming in; it was a far cry from the usual smiles and banter that would fill Anchored Hearts only weeks before. Steph - well, her silence was deafening.
The only thing that had remained solid in his world had been Renzie; a gift, a blessing that Isidore would never for granted. But as essential as Renzie’s resilient friendship had been, Isidore was still lacking - perhaps lacking himself, and it was as midnight struck and Isidore turned to gaze at the sea that something truly began to stir in the obsidian heart, thudding on within the cage of his ribs. In the days following the celebration (bleak, in Isidore’s case, so firmly rooted in his pouting and wallowing), Isidore’s dread had loosened it’s grip on his emotions, and some clarity began to settle back onto his aged shoulders.
As much as Isidore loved his humans, he could see now, with this distance, the separation to return back to himself, that they had been a security blanket, too. They had made it far too easy for him to shut off parts of himself, pushed back so far, they struggled to surface. Telling the truth had reminded Isidore, and as he let the silence become welcome, questions that he had forgotten he didn’t know the answer too flooded back.
Though he tried with all his might; Isidore couldn’t change the past, nor could he truly change himself. Not really... and with the dirty laundry aired, Isidore didn’t have any other excuse to offer the universe about why he hid.
Isidore didn’t know who created him - maybe the Goddess, maybe the Sea itself, maybe something different entirely. Isidore didn’t know why darkness was creeping into his old home; he didn’t know why his brothers were fading, or why he remained. Isidore didn’t know why the other species were falling ill.
Isidore didn’t know, and he had been too involved with the humans to remember that he should care about that. And maybe he didn’t care as much as he should, as much as they all wanted him to care, but... well, without the distraction of his newer found family, he had plenty of time to ponder the mysteries of himself; the questions his humans asked, that he couldn’t answer. Why? Why, indeed.
Returning to the sea would answer nothing, Isidore was sure; nothing important, anyway, but it would prove to him one thing.
It would prove to himself that he was indeed Assyrian. Even now, after everything - and he’d spent a month letting the truth weigh on his friends, it was time to shoulder it for himself now.
“I’m going home,” Isidore repeated to the darkness of the evening. There was no streetlamps to light the rock-studded shore, more pebble in the coast than sand, but he could see perfectly. He was barefoot, wearing only his black denim against the bit of the January air, the wind chill icy as it blew off from the water, but he knew soon, it wouldn’t matter. Soon, he wouldn’t be shivering, and in the cloak of isolation and darkness, ankle deep in the surf - Isidore removed the last remaining barriers between his body and the ocean, and continued forward.
When he submerged, for a moment, Isidore just stayed the way he was, welcoming the sheer bitterness of the cold as it etched into his bones, swimming just under the surface with his hands and feet propelling him further out. Further, until even if he stood, his head wouldn’t break water; and then, further yet, until his lungs screamed for air and his legs stiffened in the temperature. He swam until he couldn’t, and then, Isidore became still.
Breathing in, Isidore felt the shock of water in his nose and mouth for a fraction of a second before it happened.
TW: MINOR BODY HORROR - BEGINNING
His back arched, and though finally Isidore could breath, fear gripped his heart for a moment. Transforming had never been painful before, but as it took his body, Isidore could feel it in a new way now - perhaps painful isn’t the best descriptor, but uncomfortable, definitely. It felt like trying to bend a dent out of metal; forcing the joints beyond their comfort, and Isidore whimpered as he felt his limbs - oh, his limbs, such a familiar form to him now - lengthen and bind, skin breaking to let scales come forth, and from the scales, downy hair protecting his upper body. He writhed, trying to help force his body into the shapes it knew best, but had forgotten; forced his mind to still as he let the water filter through his gills, bleeding on his neck.
Within three minutes, he had finished the transformation, and glided in a slow crescent in the deep. Isidore hadn’t realized he’d continued swimming forward, propelled by the experience, needing the pressure of his tail forcing him onward as he extended and grew. Now miles from the surface, Isidore wasn’t hiding at all.
END TW - SAFE TO READ HERE ON OUT
Isidore had fully transformed.
As his energy replenished, as if the sea were caressing him, welcoming him back, Isidore’s heart raced an orchestra in his chest. If you were watching from a boat above the surface, you’d see nothing but the possibility of a ghost of a shadow, whizzing by - if you blinked, you’d miss it, and any glimpse would leave you mildly curious about the strange glint in the water.
Isidore’s tail was a sleek black, shiny and mirrored, a color so deep it seemed endless. Strong, powerful, and sporting eight different plumes of fins that followed behind him like whispers of night in his wake. The tip of each scale was kissed pastel green, baby blue; peeks of color when the sunlight filtered through the kelp just right, like the sea sparkling over a sunset sky. Instead of hoofs on his front legs; powerful, just as his tail, more black billows of fins took their place. His mane was long, reaching the base of his tail and plastering against his back, lined with webbed spines in a brilliant, stark navy blue against the shine of his gray coat. The hippocampi’s form was a tidepool of color, tarnished and shadowed with the streaks of gray and dark green, creating a metallic gleam over the whole body of him.
But no one was around to stare at his beauty; not this time. Instead, Isidore was alone; entirely alone, and planned to take full advantage of that. He was racing out, through the seas, testing his tired, unused strength against the currents, and probably lost hours to the water as he roamed. Every movement, even as he leaped from the water (when sure he was safe from human eyes) in an arch against the night sky, felt like an old memory.
When his energy had been spent, Isidore let himself sink down, down, until even through his muscular shape, the cold bit into him. Relaxing onto the sandy ocean floor, snout resting on his front legs and his tail curl furling up behind him (looking like quite an odd combination of horse, fish, seahorse, and dejected human), Isidore let his eyes half-lid, and allowed his mind much-resisted freedom.
He would return to Assyria; this, Isidore knew without a doubt, but he wanted to stay there, like this, as long as he could stand first. He wanted to remember; he wanted to feel it all, and marvel at the wonder of it. Yet another gift from his humans; once again, Isidore was awe-struck by the truth of Assyria; of himself, of this world he knew and thought so little of. The magic of it-
But what was magic, anyway? Jo believed in Science, and Isidore did, too. Elistra believed in the Goddess, and Isidore did, too. Where did fact and fiction meet, and who was the cause of it? The Goddess, the universe, the unknown truths of the planet and it’s many creatures? For if the Goddess had created the mermaids, and had created him, who had created them? The humans above the sea, the multitude of animals that lived in the sky, in the trees... The world was wide, and Isidore was small. He thought of Islam, how the word translated from Arabic meaning voluntary submission - to surrender yourself over to a high power, give yourself onto it. And Isidore marveled at that, too, wondering how all of these faiths all connected;
All the rivers connect to the sea; all the seas connect; water is the same, wherever it goes.
Perhaps the heart, perhaps belief, worked the same way. Perhaps they were all the same; everyone was ‘right’, and the concept of a deity of creation, of life - be it aliens, be a Sea Goddess, maybe you are meant to believe what is best for yourself.
I believe in you, Isidore thought, whispering the words into the Sea with his mind.
I missed you, the Sea replied.
I know. But I’m going back, Isidore thought, thinking of home - of Port Vale.
I know, the Sea sighed.
And then, Isidore went home.

“Gemma! Gemma, hi!” Stella hadn’t exactly gotten the hang of keeping objects in a bag or purse just yet. She understood that humans often carried these bags to store their personal effects while in motion, but she also liked having them close. Right now, as she jogged up to her acquaintance, Stella had three different books, her cell phone, a water bottle decorated with stickers, and a roll of masking tape. At least the masking tape roll was around her wrist like an extra-chunky bracelet, but the rest was just in her hands.
“Have you seen an orange cell phone case anywhere? I took my phone out of it because I accidentally spilled some juice on it and needed to make sure that nothing went wrong, but I don’t remember exactly what happened after that because I kept changing seats to catch the light perfectly. Have you ever tried reading while the sun’s in your eyes? It just doesn’t work well at all. I didn’t account for the sun changing position so frequently in the evening, but that’s my mistake. I’ve got the times down for tomorrow so this doesn’t happen again... Did I ask you about the phone case yet? How are you going?”

If you had to guess who was a mermaid or whatever else in town besides your bae who would you say?
"Huh... I guess this is the most interesting topic out there these days, right? Okay, let's get on things.
Can I just say anyone new in town is sus? Because really, anyone new in town is suspicious. Maybe not Mina, she is Jo's fiancé after all, but most of the newbies. What species all of the people I will list is up to question, since human forms don't really give away details, but if I have suspicions, I will let you know.
But more specifically, Thomas has to be not human. He is cousins with Mellora, they had to have grown up together in some way to be comfortable enough with a lie like that. Or maybe it's not even a lie, I'm not sure. They could be related. But yes, he must be a merman. That would be my guess.
Nereida... she cannot read, okay? Which isn't that big of an indication, but like, in this day and age, it's not a lot of people who cannot read, and when she said she wanted something not of her world to read about, she meant simple and boring people - her words, not mine - falling in love. That is just... sounds exactly like somebody who isn't human.
Valentina is obviously something else other than human, too. I mean, technically she could be like a mermaid hunter, but what makes the most sense is that she is a seaperson. Why else would she have wanted to steal the pendant, been so obsessed with it and then not give proper answers, you know?
I'm kind of wondering about Gemma too. Backpacking adventurer? Who settles down in Port Vale? It just... it feels strange, is all. Not that I have any specific proof of it, but it feels sus.
And then there is the kid, Quinn. He lived in a tent on the beach! For months! And he claims because he didn't want to waste money and I know he says he's going to college and all, but are we really sure he's going there? Could it be just a lie to cover up his seaperson-ness? Maybe he lived in a tent because he wanted to be near the sea and now that he is settling in more, he let Renzie help him find a place. Also! The way he just doesn't believe but is so polite about it? And those specifically clearly not accurate drawings of mermaids? If you ask me, all of it is to throw us off of his tail. Yes, pun intended.
Probably there are more, too, these are just my top contenders currently. Come check back later down the line and might have more information."

Walter was still reeling from the conversation he’d had with the city council president. She seemed to be under the impression that he was going to be doing free work for her, which in his mind was a very strange request from the city council, and while it did set off some alarms in his head that something in this town was not right, he needed to focus on one thing at a time.
He’d been told outright that he wasn’t going to find what he was looking for in the museum. But he needed to get all the information he could. And so, after finding no one at the front desk he made his way into the gift shop, where he did finally find someone who worked here. Walter had done this many times before that it became a muscle memory at this point, “Excuse me, my name is Walter Perez. I’m wondering if I could ask you some questions about the museum, and maybe about lore in Port Vale as a whole? I’m collecting information for an article I’m writing.”

who do you think of as friends?
“Vera and Silas are my friends, I think we get along well with each other! I think Gemma and I are now officially friends now too after my little slip up which is great, I didn’t know sirens were so cool so I’m glad I met her and she actually wants to be friends with me too. I’m very happy about that.”

Without Mellora opening with him, the museum seemed terribly empty. Lifeless, even. He understood why she'd returned to the sea, of course. Better than ever, now that he had his brothers in town with him. If anything were to happen to one of them, he was quite certain he'd move mountains trying to help them. Still, he worried about whether he could still carry out their quest and help Assyria without her at his side.
But she was already gone. There was no room for doubt...nor any for error, if the situation in the North Atlantic truly was as serious as it sounded. He would simply have to succeed.
In the meantime, though, there were explanations to be given. Alliances to be maintained, even though the thought of trying to represent the North Atlantic made Thomas's stomach turn. He'd missed on a century of geopolitical action, after all. Hopefully she would at least send a mermaid representative soon.
Speaking of - one such ally (or, at least, he hoped she was?) was walking through the door. Thomas abandoned the front counter to greet her. In one hand, he gripped an envelope addressed to her. "Good morning, Gemma! I was wondering if we could talk, preferably before 10," when humans would come trickling in. "It's...well, it's sort urgent."

The sirens of Port Vale have a “diplomatic” text group chat the day after the Halloween would-be wedding to discuss the odd things that they encountered.
Includes: Gabi Drake, Valentina Romanova @valentinaromanova, Gemma Walker @gemmawalker, Ridley Alara @blackseariddle, Seraphina Calder @seraphinacalder, Elistra Smith @elistras
Mentions: Moray Blackmore @morayblackmore, Isidore Delgado @isidoredelgado, Ronan Delgado @ronandelgado, Siobhan Waters, Victoria Wolfgang, Xander Blackmore
Please be advised that this is a text chat that is over 15+ Microsoft Word pages
Gabi Drake
(adds Gemma, Val, and Ridley to group chat)
Strangers can’t read text, can they?
Valentina Romanova
what.
Gabi Drake
What?
Ridley Alara
omg this is so cool
Valentina Romanova
strangers?
Gabi Drake
non-sirens and people not added.
Valentina Romanova
ah. no.
Ridley Alara
dont worry its totally between us only.
Valentina Romanova
what is this.
Ridley Alara
val!! its a group chat!!!
Valentina Romanova
i know that. why is this.
Gabi Drake
a strategic tool. For information-sharing. I have information.
Ridley Alara
and its fun…
Valentina Romanova
information sharing. with me and ridley?
Gabi Drake
And Gemma
Valentina Romanova
oh.
did you want it to be sirens, generally. or just us.
Gabi Drake
I’m not dignifying that with a response.
Use your discretion.
Valentina Romanova
wtf does that mean.
Ridley Alara
omg it means we have a siren girl gang happening right now
Valentina Romanova
do you want other sirens in port vale in here or not. who do you want to share your information with.
Ridley Alara
theres more??
Valentina Romanova
yes. captain calder of the red sea. and another. from gabi’s realm.
Gemma Walker
(adds Seraphina to the group chat)
You said you have information, Gabi?
Valentina Romanova
Valentina has added Elistra to the group chat
i will just remove her if you do not want her to know.
Elistra
(typing…)
Gabi Drake
What
Elistra
(Elistra has left the group chat)
Valentina Romanova
?
Valentina has added Elistra to the group chat
stay.
Gabi Drake
I GUESS she can know
Elistra
is this an ambush what is this
Gabi Drake
NO
Valentina Romanova
your captain has important siren information.
i think.
Gabi Drake
Crowd-sourcing information would be helpful. What is the mayor’s not-wife, first of all?
Valentina Romanova
?
Gabi Drake
Never mind
Valentina Romanova
a wife is what humans call a lifelong partner.
Elistra
is this how diplomatic meetings usually go for you all? it’s much less impressive over text
Gabi Drake
More importantly, any missing mermaid gemstones??
Gemma Walker
You don’t have to stay, Elistra, if you don’t have anything to contribute.
Valentina Romanova
yes she does. i told her to.
gabi. are you referring to atla’s pendant.
Seraphina Calder
Is this a diplomatic meeting? I’m not sure I follow
Gemma Walker
Gabi here has something she’d like to share, it would seem.
Valentina Romanova
gabi claimed to have information. i also have information. but i am waiting to hear hers first.
Gabi Drake
Yeah, it’s been found.
Valentina Romanova
what?
where.
Gabi Drake
The odd blonde lady had it. Has it.
Or it could be a good fake. I don’t know.
Elistra
odd blonde lady?
Valentina Romanova
the mayors betrothed?
Gabi Drake
Sharon.
Gemma Walker
Siobhan?
Gabi Drake
Her name isn’t Sharon?
Gemma Walker
No…
Valentina Romanova
i thought it was shivon.
Gabi Drake
Can none of you spell Sharon?
Gemma Walker
It was Siobhan on the wedding announcements.
Valentina Romanova
it doesnt matter what her name is. is she a siren or a mermaid.
Elistra
oh my goddess
Valentina Romanova
dont fucking invoke the goddess here.
Seraphina Calder
We are truly lacking focus here. I still have no idea of the point of this
Gabi Drake
To share so it doesn’t go through the rumor mill!
Valentina Romanova
well. this is interesting. i will investigate her.
Seraphina Calder
Who among us intends to act on this information?
Gabi Drake
It is nice to know that you are here, Seraphina.
Elistra
maybe someone should ask isidore
Valentina Romanova
surprisingly good suggestion.
Elistra
he could tell what i was the moment i came here
Gemma Walker
I can ask. He approached me yesterday and offered assistance if I needed it.
Seraphina Calder
Why would we include our enemies in our choices?
Valentina Romanova
enemies?
isidore is not my enemy.
Gabi Drake
Keep your enemies close if that is what they are to you.
Seraphina Calder
Hippocampi are on the side of the mermaids and they always will be. You are naive to think otherwise, Valentina.
Elistra
lol you obviously don’t know isidore
Valentina Romanova
i am not naive. isidore is a neutral party.
Gabi Drake
Have you met Ronan?
Seraphina Calder
Anyone can be a neutral party until they are forced to make a choice
Valentina Romanova
fine. it does not matter. i will investigate the bride myself.
but i have other information.
Gabi Drake
Good information?
Valentina Romanova
depends on your definition.
Gabi Drake
Beneficial.
Valentina Romanova
beneficial. yes.
on the night the wedding was supposed to take place i received a messenger from my sea. she informed me that there is a sickness in my realm. my sirens have heard that it has spread throughout assyria but they do not know the extent of it. i thought you all would want to know. in case you would like to check on your own realms. but i also think that we should keep this information close to our chests. if it is not affecting the mermaids we do not want them to think our realms weak.
Elistra
wait what
a sickness?
Valentina Romanova
that is what my messenger told me.
Elistra
and it was a physical messenger? a siren you spoke to?
Valentina Romanova
yes.
Gemma Walker
I received a similar message from one one of my own. She told me that it’s rumored to be impacting mermaids, as well. A cause hasn’t been identified, but it would be wise to stay out of the water for now if you haven’t been already.
Gabi Drake
I know a great uninhabited island.
Valentina Romanova
what would we need an island for.
Gabi Drake
Inhabiting
Gemma Walker
Aren’t we already inhabiting this town?
Elistra
if its a sickness, everyone should know about it. sicknesses contrary to what you might believe, don’t know borders
Gabi Drake
Everyone will do what they want. This is not the diplomatic gathering I was hoping for.
Seraphina Calder
This is what happens when you invite rankless sirens
Valentina Romanova
we are not mermaids, we do not have some awful hierarchy. if she has community that is sick in her sea, she deserves to know.
Seraphina Calder
Yes in her community not theirs
Gemma Walker
My messenger did say my pod had heard of mermaids developing the sickness, as well.
Seraphina Calder
Which means that mermaids can hear of it all on their own and we don’t need to help them. They wouldn’t help us
Valentina Romanova
it would be to our detriment to tell them, i agree.
Ridley Alara
did anyone mention the black sea at all when you got your messages?
Valentina Romanova
no. sorry, ridley.
Gemma Walker
I’m sorry, I did not. It does seem to be fairly widespread though, even if it has only infected a few so far. I doubt anywhere is totally safe, to be perfectly honest.
Ridley Alara
does anyone…. here feel sick?
Valentina Romanova
no. do you.
Gemma Walker
sick of land, maybe. But I don’t have any symptoms that match the illness.
Ridley Alara
yeah, my tummy hurts
Gabi Drake
Sick of many things. But not illness
Ridley Alara
that could be the coffee, i havent had dinner tho
Gabi Drake
Gemma is valid.
Valentina Romanova
eat something. and. dont touch me.
Elistra
@Ridley Alara i can not believe i fell for “i’m here on business”
Ridley Alara
omg so this IS you, i thought maybe port vale had two elistra smiths
why do you know abba?
Elistra
yeah elistra’s a really common name
Gabi Drake
what is happening?
Seraphina Calder
I am certainly sick of this pointless conversation
Ridley Alara
did you hear from your sirens?
Valentina Romanova
what are you going to do to help assyria then seraphina.
how are you going to investigate the illness that might be affecting your people.
Gabi Drake
This is too many problems.
Seraphina Calder
Certainly not by relying upon anyone else based on what I’ve learned from this.
Ridley Alara
im not sure if this is helpful rn but i ate a cookie and my tummy feels better, i think i’m safe
Valentina Romanova
youre being a brat.
Gemma Walker
what’s a cookie?
Ridley Alara
😲
Gabi Drake
humans call each other that affectionately
Seraphina Calder
No I was attempting to strategic and you all have lost your minds.
Humans are idiots
Elistra
a cookie is a baked good, the bad ones have raisins in them the good ones have chocolate chips
Valentina Romanova
when were you attempting to be strategic! you have not proposed any productive solutions, only shot down others’.
Ridley Alara
lets all get along, we wont get anywhere fighting, right?
Gabi Drake
why would you call someone a baked good? Is it to insult them for having the appearance of a raisin?
Gemma Walker
I don’t think that’s it.
Ridley Alara
cookies are sweet, people you like are sweet. it matches. sort of
Gemma Walker
I do agree that some civility would be nice, though.
Elistra
ive never heard someone call someone else a cookie. usually its something like “sugar”
Seraphina Calder
(Seraphina has left the group chat)
Gabi Drake
Sugar is also sweet
Elistra
yeah because sweetness and kindness are considered desirable traits here
Gemma Walker
Let’s add her back in once she’s had some time to cool down.
Gabi Drake
yes, sweetness and kindness just left the chat
Valentina Romanova
anyway.
if anyone learns anything more about the illness. it would be useful to share it here. finding out if isidore knows anything is a start, as well as investigating human medical textbooks and pursuing the lead with the blonde bride. i am sure this sickness is connected to everything else threatening our realms.
Ridley Alara
we should tell each other if one of us gets sick too
Valentina Romanova
obviously. yes. that too.
Gabi Drake
Understood. The text channels are always open. Could someone please tell Seraphina to notify them if she has symptoms so it can be related?
Gemma Walker
I can check in with her.
Valentina Romanova
i will talk to her. later. i am sure she is just stressed about being on land.
Gemma Walker
That is fair, being on land is awful.
Gabi Drake
the novelty runs thin. How many years can one last here sane?
Gemma Walker
I don’t believe anyone said anything about years
we could ask isidore though
Elistra
………..
Valentina Romanova
isidore has been here fifteen years. so. ten, probably.
Elistra
so that gives me 4 more years of sanity. good to know.
Gabi Drake
An overestimate
Valentina Romanova
oh never mind. five then.
Elistra
yeah im the crazy one certainly no one here has gone mad with power
Gabi Drake
You didn’t even try.
Valentina Romanova
no. no one has.
Gemma Walker
Please do!
Ridley Alara
am I allowed to say my idea?
Valentina Romanova
not if it involves cookies.
Ridley Alara
why don’t we just ask the mayor to fund an ocean research project and we pay the science people to figure it out?
Valentina Romanova
because humans are morons
who don’t know we exist.
Gemma Walker
I’m not sure if what we want is more humans poking around in the water.
Elistra
also i think youre vastly overestimating how much spare money this town has
Gabi Drake
let’s consider a reelection. I have heard of those
Ridley Alara
oh right. Good point
Valentina Romanova
a re-election for your captaincy or.
Gemma Walker
I don’t know if they’d let you be a candidate, Gabi.
Ridley Alara
oh Victoria is going to be mayor
she said so after the contest
Valentina Romanova
who is victoria. morays brother is mayor.
Gabi Drake
sure. Lets have Victoria.
Elistra
victoria is on the city council, moray’s brother beat her in the last election
Ridley Alara
shes like friends with siobhan
Valentina Romanova
hm. i see.
Ridley Alara
well idk but that’s what she said… he was gonna ruin the town and now she HAS to be mayor
Gabi Drake
Can anyone else run?
Valentina Romanova
i am glad the blackmores are vanquishing their enemies.
Elistra
not vanquished enough for her not to be a problem
Valentina Romanova
hm.
Elistra
@Gabi Drake how good did you forge your papers before coming here?
Valentina Romanova
i do not want to get involved in human politics but moray has been crucial as my human liaison. he should be rewarded. should i vanquish her?
Elistra
if i say no will that make you do it out of spite?
Valentina Romanova
perhaps.
Ridley Alara
this is so cool
Elistra
i think moray would like to be rewarded in other ways tho, just so you know, if you want suggestions on gifts
Valentina Romanova
you know him well? i suppose we can confer.
Elistra
sure. i’ll give you all the intel i have on your human liaison.

Who are you most comfortable around?
"My friends back in my sea- the majority are higher ranking, and I feel like I can be myself with them. In Port Vale, I only feel anything close to comfortable- in order of comfort level- around Isla, Lena, and then Ridley to a lesser degree. I felt about a about as comfortable with Gemma than I do with Lena, but now it isn't quite the same."

When's the last time you had a crush on someone?
"When was the last time I crushed someone? That does not make any sense," Gabi said, incredibly confused. She repeated the question back to herself after a moment, and then took to The Google to figure out if this was just another silly human idiom.
Yes. Yes, it was. She remembered what this word meant now in context.
"Ah. Yes. I have a 'crush' right now. And it-" Her voice broke, and she found it difficult to say the next part. She felt like a land film cliché. "It certainly feels like it is crushing me. And unless some things become apparent, I am almost certain that it must stay that way."
