Welcome to your life - Pt 2:
Acting On Your Best Behaviour Ch 6:
Tumblr media
Summary:
They'd seen it in their fellow orphans often enough to recognise the pattern and were now forced to admit, despite their hopes to the contrary, that Isidora had likely suffered similar side effects.
No… they'd always known she had. The Keeper had just wanted the power that Ranrok had, enough to convince themselves that they would be able to handle it better than that naive woman.
With the start of the Keeper’s sixth-year in Hogwarts, comes a whole slew of headache-inducing challenges from the most unexpected of places. Between insignificant pests throwing wrenches into their plans and tedious teenage drama, that the Keeper is entirely unprepared for, they wonder if they'll make it to their NEWTs without losing their sanity.
Or worse, Ominis or Sebastian.
Tumblr media
Warnings: Sebastian x MC x Ominis! Drug Addiction! Spoilers! Slow-burn corruption! Dark content! Fucked up 1800s orphanages! MC has no love for Anne or Solomon! Dubious happy ending (it's happy for MC, Seb and Ominis at least).
You can also read on AO3! (chapter specific warnings below)
Notes:
Warnings: Remember to look down at the steps when you're walking down stairs!
Yeap, I was so damn busy these two weeks, good thing I took some time off ^_^;
Well, at least this time I have another half a chapter ready, but I really wanna build out that buffer better x'D
There was a small, strange smile curling the corners of the Keeper’s mouth as they made their way down the flight of stairs in the Defence Tower. The hallways were empty enough that they had some concern about being late for Arithmancy, but at least they'd see Sebastian again.
It was strange that being alone for just one short walk, was already enough to miss the two boys. To want to speak with them, not because the Keeper didn’t know what response the boys might have to anything they had to say. At this point they knew Sebastian and Ominis well enough to anticipate most of their opinions, but strangely enough, they wanted to speak with the two regardless.
Not to gain information, but purely for the joy of interaction.
The Keeper felt simultaneously like something monumental had changed last night, and yet as though nothing had. Sleep had still eluded them the previous night, yet they somehow felt more rested, more at peace than they did before. It was bizarre.
Whilst no real progress had been made, they certainly felt less anxious and agitated after having confided in their partners. The act of discussing the implementation of a schedule for gradually lowering the Keeper’s pain energy intake, had been reassuring, despite not managing to come up with a method for getting to that point.
It had been embarrassing, admitting that they'd lost control and taken half of their last jar in one night, but the boys had been remarkably understanding about that. With Sebastian quipping that he couldn’t restrain himself with a good book either.
Ominis had then rolled his eyes and muttered a quiet. "Only if it's forbidden."
As Sebastian protested that he read more than just forbidden books, the conversation turned to the dosage that the Keeper had been taking for the duration of the holidays, in relation to the amount they'd started with at the end of last term.
Ominis had then suggested that the Keeper slowly return to the original amount they had been taking when they'd started using the pain magic. As chances were, that the higher dosage they'd started taking was due to their tolerance building, while the initial amount was likely already sufficient for their needs.
They really didn't want to, but the Keeper had to admit to the logic in his suggestion. Not to mention, it was already a pleasant surprise to have the boys' support even after the two of them discovered what the pain energy was doing to the Keeper. They didn't want to push their luck.
Thus, the Keeper had replied to his suggestion with an obedient. "Understood."
Ominis then frowned and shook his head. "Not good enough. I've heard that one before."
Sebastian had released a groan at the reminder of his previous use of misleading words, and the Keeper had then doubled over in laughter at Ominis' flat glare.
Ominis had been gracious enough to drop the topic after Sebastian apologised again. Before also suggesting that he begin teaching the Keeper Occlumency, the ability to organise their memories and cordon off specific portions of their mind, since Ominis felt that it might help with their self-control.
However, they didn't think they would be able to focus enough to train up that skill. After all, if there's a fire you're trying to douse, you can't put it out inside the house.
It was… strange, in a way, the Keeper had expected something to change. Here they were, exposing their weaknesses and vulnerable parts. They’d expected some level of pride from their partners, some sign that the two were gleeful, now that the Keeper was relying on them, haughty at the level of power the boys now had over them.
Yet all the Keeper had seen in Sebastian and Ominis, was the earnest determination to support them.
The Keeper didn't know how to describe it or why, but now that they'd taken that leap of faith and come to trust the boys fully, they felt free.
Even though logic told them that they were far less free than before, if anything, they were tied down even more securely to their partners. They'd bet their trust and secrets on these two boys and there was no going back.
However, they felt uncharacteristically optimistic that they'd earned more from this move than they'd risked. Sebastian and Ominis had seemed happy that the Keeper had confided in them, and their show of trust had likely bolstered the boys’ loyalty in turn.
Perhaps it was these pleasant thoughts or the yet present dizziness, or even a combination of the two, but for the first time since the bullies started stalking them, the Keeper failed to notice their stalkers' cast a spell aimed at their feet.
The two boys had trailed the Keeper down the flights of staircases in the Defence Tower, pausing a single flight above the Keeper. One of the two whispered a quiet "Glisseo", pointing his wand downwards at the flight of stairs that the Keeper was about to step down onto.
You have got to be kidding me. Reverberated through the Keeper's brain as their foot came down on a smooth and flat, declining slope.
They really should stop letting optimistic thoughts distract them, this was twice now.
Feeling gravity take hold, the Keeper brought their arms up to block their head protectively, ignoring the inertia and curling up as much as they could to protect their vitals. They couldn’t use magic to shield themselves, so this was the best they could do. They braced for the inevitable impact that awaited them at the end of the once-stairs.
You cannot always be on guard.
Well, Ominis had been right about that one. Was the Keeper's last dry thought as they careened towards the floor.
Tumblr media
Natty sighed as she hurried up the stairs, she understood that her mother was worried about her, but did she really need another lecture? Now that the poachers weren’t crawling all over the Highlands, it wasn’t nearly as dangerous for Natty to be out in her gazelle form.
Honestly. Her mother’s nagging had lasted long enough that Natty was sure that she was going to be late for her next class.
As she rushed up the stairs, and turned the corner to the next flight of stairs, she was alarmed to see that the stairs had become a steep slope. Even worse, was that another student was at the top of the stairs, having clearly lost their footing and was tumbling down the slope.
Natty felt time slow, her keen senses and protective instinct sharpening. With lightning quick reflexes, she smoothly transformed into her animagus form. The threat of being reported to the ministry, for being an underage unregistered animagus, paled in comparison to the danger that her peer was currently in.
She could not sit idly by and let someone get injured when she could do something about it!
Dropping her weight to the ground, Natty watched the falling figure carefully, lowering herself into the right position to catch the student with her broad body, providing a soft barrier to lessen the impact of their fall.
Bracing her hooves against the floor, Natty felt the student's body slam into hers, knocking the wind from her chest.
Skidding back a few steps, Natty breathed a sigh of relief as the student laid against her side, it seemed they had been smart enough to curl up into a ball. With Natty's cushioning, they appeared to have escaped serious injury.
Just as Natty was about to transform back into her human form, a loud shout came from a portrait on the wall.
"What do the two of you think you're doing!? That was incredibly dangerous!" The portrait sounded furious and Natty craned her neck upwards, quickly spotting two boys leaning over the bannister, staring at her with shock on their faces.
At the portrait's rebuke, Natty watched warily as the two boys disappeared over the bannister. Likely the culprits of this insane prank. If those two students thought this was an acceptable joke, Natty would string them up by their ankles!
She looked back down towards the student who had fallen, at least her schoolmate wasn't screaming about broken bones.
"Sorry…" The student sighed as they uncovered their head and Natty's eyes widened, recognising one of her best friends.
The Keeper sat up carefully and Natty quickly undid the animagus transformation, while her friend checked themselves over for injuries.
Natty smiled wryly as her jaw snapped back into place, the Keeper was probably the oddest friend she'd ever had. "Why are you apologising? You were the victim."
The Keeper shook their head. "I'm sorry for involving you. I should have been more careful. Figures, the one time they manage to catch me off guard…"
Natty frowned at her friend's grumbling. "Wait, how long has this been going on?"
The Keeper blinked twice and then grimaced, pinching the bridge of their nose. "A while."
Natty glared at the Keeper, it wasn’t like she and Poppy hadn't noticed their friend looking like they weren't getting any sleep. Poppy had been trying to lightly prod their mysterious friend for the last month and Natty had been slowly running out of patience.
"And how long is a while?" Natty asked sharply, folding her arms.
Seeming to have resigned themselves to their fate, the Keeper sighed again. "They’ve been stalking and attacking me since the start of term."
Natty's eyes widened, that long!?
"Do you know who they are and why they're bullying you?" Natty asked, already knowing that the answer would be yes, her friend was nothing if not thorough and clever.
"Seventh-years Oberon Selwyn and Galen Macnair. I believe they're a bit peeved that a mudblood won Slytherin the House Cup last year." The Keeper shrugged nonchalantly.
Natty grimaced in disgust. "What is it with British purebloods and their obsession with lineage?"
The Keeper flashed a wry smile. "Probably the same obsession that Harlow had with coin."
"Well, I didn't let Harlow do whatever he wanted, and neither will I allow these upper-class bullies to get away with hurting my friend!" Natty declared. "I shall speak with Professor Weasley immediately."
To Natty's surprise, as she turned to descend the stairs, the Keeper grabbed her arm. "Wait. That's not a good idea."
Baffled, Natty stared at her friend. Surely, they weren't suggesting that they do nothing whilst villains wrought havoc.
Having gotten her attention, the Keeper released her arm. "Those two idiots saw you transform. Their target is currently me, so while I doubt that they care enough to give you trouble, if you try to get them in trouble, they will most certainly retaliate and use that information against you."
The Keeper frowned, their eyes serious. "If the ministry discovers that you're an underage animagus, you and your mother will be in trouble too. And I won't have that on my shoulders."
Folding their arms, the Keeper flashed a bitter smile. "Besides, if you think Black will let something like a little bullying ruin those pure-blooded boys' future, I'd be concerned for your sanity."
Natty rolled her eyes, her friend could be oddly stubborn at the strangest of times. She opened her mouth to reflexively declare that she wasn't going to let threats impede justice when the Keeper's words properly sunk in and caused her throat to tighten.
What would happen to her mother?
She froze, the thought came accompanied by the chill of fear. While it was perfectly acceptable in Uganda to use her animagus form freely, it was entirely illegal in Britain to not only refrain from registering but to also use her transformation outside Hogwarts while underage.
She had been young enough when transferring from Uagadou, that the Ministry didn't realise that she had already become an animagus on her own in an effort to follow in her father's footsteps. As Uagadou only taught the animagus transformation in the later years of school.
So, as a means of keeping her advantage a secret in a foreign land, her mother had not registered her as an animagus. If the ministry discovered this and discovered that she had been transforming regularly outside of Hogwarts, her mother and possibly herself could be sent to Azkaban.
Even Officer Singer would be implicated and potentially lose her job, since she had kept Natty's abilities a secret. After everything the woman had done for Natty, wouldn't she be a terrible person to cost the officer her job?
Loath as she was to admit it, the Keeper wasn't wrong. While Natty wouldn't hesitate to risk her own life for what she believed in or fight for the ones she loved, like her father had, she wasn't sure she could risk others' lives and livelihood.
She also knew exactly how futile it would be to bring those boys' behaviour to the teachers without damning proof. The surge of pure-blooded bullies running rampant since Black became headmaster, was enough evidence of that.
Poppy'd said that a pair of them had even tried to pluck a kneazle's whiskers, right in the middle of Care! Well, at least she knew what was going on with the Keeper now, she'd tell Poppy later and maybe they could come up with something.
In truth, her blossoming friendship with Poppy had been an unexpected delight. Despite her interest, Natty hadn't gotten a good chance to speak with the reclusive girl, till they began interacting with each other due to their friendship with the Keeper.
Poppy was surprisingly sharp, witty, and friendly. Her general aura of bright, brave kindness and mischief made Natty convinced that Poppy would have made a fine Gryffindor. It also hadn't taken Natty very long to notice the way Poppy stared at their friend, practically swooning every time the Keeper said something nice to her.
Natty had also noticed that the Keeper had started fidgeting a lot since the three of them began hanging out this year. Which was extremely out of character for them, we're talking about a kid who didn't even show any sort of agitation while fighting hordes of Ashwinders!
She was almost certain that the Keeper had realised near the end of last term that they were in love with Poppy, hence the conversation about love Natty'd had with them. Which is why the Keeper had started spending so much time with Poppy this year and was behaving jittery.
Natty had been encouraging Poppy to be more upfront about her feelings and properly court the Keeper, but then they'd started looking unwell and Poppy's focus quickly switched to their health. Perhaps this would be a chance for both Poppy and herself to repay the Keeper for everything they'd done for everyone, and maybe Poppy would even be able to secure her crush's heart at the same time.
Natty felt her chest fill with a familiar urgency and drive, the same one that drove her to dedicate herself to the cause of defeating Harlow. The impulse to protect the fragile peace around herself, lest she be forced to watch helplessly as she lost everything again.
If she hadn't been here, her brave friend, the person who had changed her life, saved Britain from Ranrock, Rookwood and Harlow, and helped her come to terms with her father's passing… might have died on the landing of these stairs.
Alone.
Natty felt her resolve strengthen, straightening her back and relaxing her arms. "I don’t like it, but you have a point."
The Keeper nodded with a satisfied expression, but Natty continued before they could speak.
Resting a hand on her hip, Natty raised a finger and sternly added. "However, you won't be carrying this on your own anymore. I doubt you're the only student that they've targeted, nor will you be the last. They need to learn that this type of behaviour is not acceptable and that they'll get what's coming to them, and I'm going to help you do that."
The Keeper frowned, pinning her with sharp narrowed eyes and she flinched, hit with an unexpected sensation, not unlike standing in the sights of a predator and the barest hint of fear slithered down her spine.
Natty stiffened, having never had this side of her friend turned on her before. She'd seen glimpses of it during battle and she knew, had always known, that the Keeper held back around her, particularly during their adventures.
The way some of the Ashwinders reacted at the sight of them… Natty didn't know what the Keeper did when they were out with Sallow, and neither was it her business. She'd had her suspicions, but she also knew that the Keeper had been targeted by the Ashwinders in the first place, and Natty had faith that whatever the Keeper had to do was in self-defence.
Despite the cold and intimidating glare, Natty held their gaze, refusing to back down. Regardless of the Keeper’s reputation, they had proven to be a true friend to her and a stalwart ally of justice. The Ashwinders were villains, and the world was a better place without the likes of Rookwood, Ranrok and Harlow.
The Keeper had proven themselves to be a good person. Cold yet kind, calculative yet considerate, reserved and cautious yet brave, and now Natty's closest friend was once again the target of unwarranted persecution, from inside Hogwarts no less!
Natty wouldn't allow her friend to be at risk of death in a place that should be safe. A place where the Keeper clearly couldn't keep their guard up forever.
After a long moment, the Keeper finally sighed, reaching up to pinch the bridge of their nose again as they relented with a resigned. "Fine, do what you want."
"Good." Natty nodded, pleased that the Keeper had seen reason. "I'll let you know when I've thought of something."
The Keeper gave her a small fond smile and a nod. Satisfied, Natty flicked her hand at the staircase, dispelling the charm and restoring the steps, before turning and ascending them.
She would need support in this, and she knew of several people who she could probably recruit to help her protect the Keeper.
There was much work to be done.
Tumblr media
The great hall was loud as ever, and the Keeper felt the noise grate against the thrumming in their skull. In need of relief, their eyes scanned the Slytherin table as they approached, as always, seeking out their two favourite wizards.
Spotting the boys at their usual spot, the Keeper made their way over, trying to mask the slight limp they were still nursing from the fall.
They were fortunate to have gotten out of that with minor injuries. A small bump was forming on the side of their head, their right elbow was definitely bruised, and their right knee wasn't doing much better, but they were alive.
How embarrassing it would have been to survive dragons, goblins, and an entire underworld organisation, and then break their neck on impact at the bottom of some stairs.
"There you are, how are you feeling?" Ominis asked with a smile as soon as the Keeper was within earshot, lowering his left hand to the bench.
"Tired." Sliding into the seat beside Ominis, the Keeper had to force down the urge to rest their head in the crook of his neck, settling instead with placing their hand over his between them.
The Keeper glanced over the table, covered in stuffed pastries, roasted meat, raw vegetables, and sweets, feeling their stomach churn at the thought of eating.
"Maybe we can get the nurse to let you take a day off tomorrow, we can help you take notes." Sebastian suggested quietly, his eyes worried as he leaned forward to push a bowl of stew, across the table, over to the Keeper. "Here, at least try to eat something light."
The Keeper smiled softly, accepting the bowl without protest, feeling Ominis' fingers curl over their own. Sebastian's concern was sweet, but they really couldn't afford to skip a day of lessons. Then again, it might be wiser to try and recover their strength a bit, especially after-
"What happened?" Ominis frowned, his eyes narrowing.
The Keeper was puzzled for a moment, until he lifted their clasped hands slightly and ran his fingers over the swollen bruises forming over their knuckles.
Ominis repeated. "Where did you get these injuries?"
"You're hurt!?" Sebastian exclaimed in a hushed voice, leaning across the table to catch a sight of their hands.
The Keeper grimaced, they hadn’t even noticed their hand had sustained any sort of damage, between the other injuries. "It's just some bruising, it'll heal fast enough on its own."
"I don't believe that's what I asked." Ominis' voice was now tinged with a quiet anger.
The Keeper sighed, no getting around it, they had to tell the boys about Natty too besides. "Those two idiots decided to turn some stairs into a slope and, well…"
They trailed off, feeling a bit too embarrassed about having been caught off guard to put it into words. Sebastian's eyes darkened and Ominis' widened in alarm.
"Are you injured anywhere else?" Ominis began pressing his fingers lightly around the Keeper's arm, moving upwards carefully.
"Their face and neck seems alright, is your hair a little puffier than usual?" Sebastian muttered, squinting at the Keeper in an effort to discern their condition through their robes, looking frustrated at their bagginess.
"Guys, I'm alright, I already took some wiggenweld, it's just taking a while to kick in." The Keeper cajoled, taking Ominis' hands to stop them from going further.
"It is not fine!" Ominis snapped, making a concerted effort to keep his volume down. "Wiggenweld will not cure a concussion!"
"Well, I didn't get one. Natty happened to be nearby, I got some minor bumps, but she managed to soften my landing enough to escape injury." The Keeper replied firmly, shooting a glare at a nearby second-year boy who was peering curiously at them from the corner of his eye.
The kid let out a small squeak and returned his attention to his food, not wanting to draw the ire of the renowned goblin-slayer.
"Thank Merlin…" Ominis breathed, looking more convinced this time.
"Onai?" Sebastian blinked. "You took down Harlow with her last year, right?"
The Keeper nodded. "She took a hit for me then, and I owe her another one now. So, when she asked what was going on with Selwyn and Mcnair, I answered honestly about their bullying."
"Well, I suppose we're all grateful to her for protecting you." Ominis smiled gently, relaxing enough for the Keeper to release his hands.
Sebastian nodded, a moment passing before a small frown creased his brow. "Hopefully she doesn't do anything that'll make things worse for us."
Ominis hummed in agreement and the Keeper tapped their chin thoughtfully, murmuring. "If I handle this right, this may actually be used to our advantage. Though, Natty can be unpredictable, so I'll have to stay on my toes."
"Please don't push yourself…" Ominis sighed, sliding a hand across the table till his fingers brushed against the basket of bread. With nimble precision, he plucked a slice from the pile and offered it to the Keeper.
Acknowledging the silent command, the Keeper smiled helplessly and accepted the bread, dipping it into the bowl of soup Sebastian had prepared for them.
While the future was looking nebulous, and although there were many variables that just got thrown into the mix, with Sebastian and Ominis by their side, the Keeper felt like they'd figure it out.
They weren't alone after all.
"Oh, and you are coming with us to see Nurse Blainey after dinner." Ominis continued as he blew lightly on a spoonful of stew.
The Keeper sighed.
Not alone indeed.
Notes:
Hopefully the Keeper didn't feel too out of character, in a way, last chapter is the point where the Keeper properly understood how different the boys are from the people they're used to, and actually truly 100% fell in love. To a certain extent, their feelings towards Sebastian and Ominis were initially more possessive than loving, but now they're down hard xD
Regarding Natty's Animagus education, during the game itself, she only says "Self-Transfiguration is common among students at Uagadou." At no point does she say that she learnt to become an animagus from or during school. As such, I'm taking liberties with the interpretation of this statement, mwahahaha!
Also, while I loved Natty’s questline, I do feel like it was one of the storylines with the least amount of moral ambiguity and challenge for her character. Her black and white ideas of right and wrong are never questioned despite the opportunity presented by situations like the kidnapping of Isko Rabe. With the game conveniently making Daisy entirely willing to fight his kidnappers despite the threats of killing him because she literally cannot fulfil their demands.
Natty never has to choose between doing the right thing for society versus doing the right thing for the individual, which is a far more difficult moral quandary. One that Sebastian had to face while far too young and without support or guidance.
Based on the way Natty assumes that the player is a brave and good person just because they are standing up to Rookwook, Ranrok and Harlow, gives me the impression that she is rather naïve, and makes a fair amount of assumptions based on her instincts. I also love her interactions with the player.
So, because I like Natty a lot, I’m also going to give her hell, in the name of character growth! =D
I’m horrible.

plainly in truth, chapter 2/5
“Without you around, it’s sorta like stuff is just kinda…bleh.“
Or: hiding, confiding, and misguiding.
read on ao3 or below the cut :)
Yusuke wasn’t too sure if what he was doing was of the right mind, but his heart is definitely in the right place.
There’s a lapse in time between Jails and hitting the road. Everyone is out soaking in the last of Sendai; Ryuji and Akira (and by extension, Sophia) are on a quest to buy any last minute supplies that they might need while the girls and Morgana are taking in the sights that they didn’t quite manage to explore as much as they’d like.
Well, the girls who like crowds and sightseeing are on a quest, at least.
Futaba and Yusuke are in the trailer by their own volition—he didn’t need to see anything else that wasn’t a timeless statue, and he learned early in his life that if you pace your spendings, you can then use that money to spend in the future. Quite the contrary, Futaba has had a little too much excitement these past few days and is more than happy to hide away in her top bunk with only her laptop charger peeking out from the bottom of her fleece blanket.
(A cartoon rendition of the Sendai temple is printed onto the fleece. Apparently Haru had yet to see Futaba purchase anything ‘tourist-y’ and action figures of various anime characters don’t seem to count.)
He tugs on her laptop cord. “Hello.”
“...What?” she grunts, voice slightly muffled. Through the thin fabric, he can see the illumination from her screen.
“I need help reacting to something.”
“And you decided to ask me?” she deadpans. “The literal shut-in?”
“The previous shut-in,” he corrects. “You haven’t been a shut-in in nearly a year. A marvelous feat, if I do say so myself.”
“Yeah, and this is my way of celebrating.” The lump on the bed seems to curl further in on itself. “Begone. Do a painting or something. This is my me time. The equivalent of guzzling down a boat load of Arginade. There’s barely any time to be by myself considering the whole group is treating this RV like a pimped out party bus, so shoo.”
J-pop starts playing from inside the blanket fort, and even Yusuke knows a dismissal when he hears one. That won’t stop him, though.
He tugs again, harder. “That is the reason I’m asking you now. I can’t have this be heard by prying ears.”
Had there been a cat on the bunk bed, its ears would have twitched. “Is this…?”
“Yes,” he nods sagely. “It’s a secret.”
Futaba’s head pops out, eyes wide and nearly glowing in excitement. If there was one thing that she liked more than recovering her energy, it's uncovering every nook and cranny of people’s lives, whether they want it or not.
“Inari, you should’ve said something!” She throws the blanket off herself, snatches her laptop in her arms and jumps down. Slamming it down on the booth, she throws herself on top of the smooth faux leather. “Tell me everything. The deets, the specs, all down to the last dirty drop of tea.”
He slides in to join her, albeit much slower. “Before you tell me that I misled you, I want to make it clear: I don’t know what the secret is.”
“What!” she slaps her forehead, groaning. “Yusuke, why would you do me like that? That’s false advertising to the max, and I do not appreciate you tricking me.”
“There wasn’t a trace of trickery. What I’m about to say really does have to do with a secret, but I need your help with how to deal with it.”
“I’m gonna level with you here pal,” she puts a hand on his wrist. “I’m not the right person for this, but I’d be darned if I let you walk away without telling me anything. So let’s hear it! I’m ready for some juicy goss. Oh! Can I guess? Is it about Haru?”
He frowns. “No. Is there something about Haru?”
“I don’t know, that’s why I was asking you!” she says, patting her hands rapidly on the table. “Come on, just spill the beans already.”
“There are no ‘beans’ to spill yet, and besides, that sounds like a waste of perfectly good food.” He leans back against the plush cushion. Only a pinch of guilt arises in him as he says it. “It’s about Ryuji.”
“Ooo, Skull himself. Gotta admit, I wasn’t expecting him.”
“It relieves me that you said that. I share the same sentiment—it wasn’t until I had run into him the night before when I had started to truly suspect something. And what I found was…” he trails off.
Her lips pull downwards. “That bad?”
“It was worrying, to say the least.”
She sighs. Most of the energy in her seemed to have filed out in the presence of a more serious topic. “Dang. I knew it was fishy when he left, but he’s always been able to just hash things out on his own.” Her expression changes as an idea pops into her head, and it morphs into one he recognizes. “Does—?”
“No. Akira doesn’t know, apparently.”
Futaba splutters, and he has to resist the urge to nod his head at her reaction. “He—Akira—wait, what? He doesn’t know? Oh, it must be bad bad.”
“My thoughts exactly. Initially, I had thought that whatever this was, it was manageable. Like that time he had spent his month’s allowance on a claw machine to win Makoto that light-up buchimaru.” Idly, he touches her keyboard lightly, appreciating the kaleidoscope of colors that emanate from it. “You know how I feel. We’re the Phantom Thieves; we can’t allow anyone to suffer alone, even if the one we’re helping is a Phantom Thief himself.”
Futaba raises an eyebrow. “And how do you want to help him?” she asks. “By talking to him? Let’s be real, you and I have the lowest social stat in this group. Combined, we can maybe reach the nerd student council president, and the guy who can and should handle this doesn’t even know about it!” Biting down on her lip, “Should we tell Akira?”
“Absolutely not. That was the one thing he had requested, and we cannot go against it. By extension, I don’t think we should tell anyone else.” A thought comes to him. “Wait, he mentioned that Ann knows of his situation.”
“Great! Someone who knows how to deal with people’s problems and isn’t us. What are we waiting for?” She reaches for her phone, and Yusuke proceeds to smack her hand out of the way. “Ow?”
“Don’t call her!” he hisses. “Ryuji said that she’s, and I quote, ‘part of the problem’. We can’t have her knowing that we know something.”
“Ann is?” Futaba exclaims, shoving her glasses up her nose. “This is getting too deep. We don’t even know anything yet, and it’s really starting to feel like we’re part of some conspiracy.”
“That’s right, we don’t know anything, and it is our largest road block.” Yusuke crosses his arms. “We don’t know what happened between Ryuji and Ann, or if something even occurred between Ryuji and Ann. What if they had an argument? What if they’re fighting, and it becomes irreparable between them? What if it begins affecting our Jail runs?”
“You really gave this some thought, huh?”
“But of course. I must nurture the few friends that I have managed to treasure.” He glances outside and sees the crowds clambering to see their tourist spot. “We may be different from most teenagers, but I don’t believe we’re immune to the nature of cliques or dramas or even insecurities.”
“God, what a good friend you are, it’s bugging me,” Futaba accuses. “So what the heck, Mr. Philanthropist? We’re stuck between a rock and our friend group here. This mission was doomed before you even dragged me out from my hideout,” she says, eyes drifting away to stare longingly back at her bunk bed.
“Stop making that expression. There’s a reason why I talked to you about this.” He leans forward. “What I’m asking is, to be frank, unfavorable, but I really do believe that it’s worth it to do this.”
She looks at him, and it only takes her a few seconds for realization to set in. Her jaw drops. “Oh Inari, that’s vile.”
“If you’re uncomfortable with it—”
“I didn’t say I was uncomfortable with it,” she cuts in. The grin on her face is wide; a woman in her element. “I just thought you’re the one who’d be all against this kind of thing.”
Futaba pulls her laptop towards her. “Sit back and observe the master at work.”
He watches as her fingers breeze through the keyboard, eyes inscrutable as light reflects off of her glasses. “So you can do it?”
“I’ve hacked into the Diet Building’s security cameras on a dare back when I was twelve,” she snorts. “This is Mario Kart Baby Park with the railings up.”
“I don’t know what that is.”
“It means—” With a flourish, she hits a key before glancing up at him, smug. “That this will be very easy. I’m thinking we can start with their text messages and work our way up to the big stuff.”
“Oh, right. You can go through our phones,” he grimaces. “You’ve stopped doing that, yes?”
“Of course I have! By the way, did you figure out what courses you wanted next term? I saw your advisor was bugging you about it, you should really email her back.”
“Yes, I’ve finally decided on sculpting as opposed to visual photography since it lets me focus on the anatomy of...” he pauses. “Wait—”
“Okay, looks like I got his text messages with Ann, so let’s all focus on this now!” she says loudly. “Scooch over, let’s go through ‘em.”
He does, and she moves to sit next to him. Yusuke peers at her screen. “Nothing out of the ordinary. There is a significant drop in the frequency of his replies, but that’s been the case for me as well.”
“Same here.” She continues scrolling up rapidly, so fast he wonders how she can keep up with herself. “Memes, memes, lots of ‘where you at’ texts, more memes…”
Something catches his eye. “Hold. Go down slightly, I think that link might be interesting.”
“‘How to treat knee pain: 11 steps with pictures’?” she reads aloud. “His knee is acting up again?”
“What’s peculiar is that I haven’t seen any sign of it.” He squints at Ryuji’s response to it—generic gratitude. “Even in Jails, he runs around without a care in the world.”
“What’s even weirder is that Ann is actually sending Ryuji wikihow links on how to treat his knee,” she snorts. “Let’s put a pin in this one and move on, Ann’s chat is chalking up to be a dead end.”
Rubbing her hands together, she straightens up like a professor in front of a lecture hall on the first day of classes. “Now Yusuke, when you’re looking to crack someone open like a tasty, moist omelette, there are two things that you must look into: their email and their bank account.”
After some clicking, Ryuji’s email pops up. “Email is obvious, since this pretty much tracks anything big. Delivery shipments, subscriptions to websites, acceptance letters. It’s all here in a neat little bow, ready for us to read.”
“‘Manga’s are 20% off for this weekend only,” he reads. “‘Anime convention next weekend’, ‘Pizza coupons’.”
“Ugh, he’s so boring! Next!” Clicking sounds through the RV, emphasizing how much they were snooping through their friend’s private life. “Bank account, show us your wisdom.”
“My word,” Yusuke gasps when the tab opens up. “That’s quite a lot of funds.”
“Inari, four thousand yen is definitely not a lot of money. How much do you have in yours?”
“I don’t have an account,” he admits. “I was on my way to the bank to open one, but I ran out of train fare. By the time I had gotten there, it was already closed. Quite rude, considering that it was only two o’clock.”
She levels him with a look. “Was it a Sunday when you did all this?”
“Why does that matter?”
“Never mind,” she shakes her head. “Okay, so nothing conclusive or even embarrassing. That means that whatever this is, he really doesn’t want anyone knowing about it.”
Futaba hops out of the booth and starts rummaging through everyone’s luggage. “That means we unlock the secret, classic, never goes out of style method of snooping—” with an expression of triumph, she showcases Ryuji’s backpack to him. “Going through their stuff IRL.”
Yusuke winces. “Don’t you think we might be going too far?”
“Hey, what’s with the cold feet? Where was your ‘justice’ from before?”
“I’m all for justice,” he watches her unzip the backpack, recoiling. “But even this seems a little excessive.”
“Look, we already went through his email, his bank account, his text messages. At this point, it’s kind of weird if we don’t find anything. Like—” she throws a pair of shorts behind her as she rummages. “What kind of teenage boy doesn’t have anything to hide? And also, it’d be kinda messed up to go through his stuff and come up empty-handed. If we didn’t find anything—” she pulls out several t-shirts and a crowbar and places them on the ground next to her. “Then we’d just be a bunch of snoops.”
“I suppose you’re right,” he reluctantly agrees. “Above all else, we need to find out what’s happened in his life to make him so upset.”
“Exactly. Oh man, wouldn’t it be crazy if we just found some porn mags or something? Retro to the max, but I can totally see him as the kind of guy to lug something like that along. Unless it’s of Akira.” She makes a face. “Ew. Funny thought is no longer funny.”
“Karma, if you will.”
“Shut it. Oh ho ho, what do we have here?”
“You found something?”
“It’s some fancy looking letter.” Futaba flops herself on the ground. She clears her throat. “'Sakamoto Ryuji. This letter is to inform you that…'” she stops all of a sudden.
“Futaba?” he probes.
“Um,” she blinks, and laughs nervously. “Um?”
He reaches over, and she doesn’t resist when it slips out of her hands. Skimming through the letter, only his eyes dare to move. When he finishes, he lets out a breath. “Oh no.”
“We shouldn't've read that,” she whispers, a perfect summation of what he was feeling. “We really should not have read that.”
There’s something to be said about the quayside in Sendai, in the way that it’s almost exactly like Tokyo.
Sure, the buildings here are definitely shorter—gone are the towering structures back home, and instead they’re replaced with shorter structures with cute local designs and colorful patio restaurants. The people here are different, too. Maybe it’s something to do with the water here, in how it’s cleaner and how you can actually see some fish down in the canals if you know where to look. Don’t even get him started in the air; jeez, do they infuse the oxygen here with something? He hasn’t stopped taking deep breaths ever since they got here.
But despite all of those discrepancies, the feeling of Akira’s hand in his is just like being home.
“And it’s actually really interesting,” he hears vaguely. “Because back in Leblanc, there used to be a couple issues about the temperature and stuff, but in my hometown there’s…Ryuji? Are you even listening to me?“
Akira’s telling him something. A story about Morgana? And Ryuji’s sure it’s very interesting, but he’s too focused on the way that sunlight hits his cheekbones.
“I’m listening,” he lies. “Keep going. This is just my listening face, I promise.”
“Sure, sure,” Akira agrees easily. “That’s just your listening face, rather than me and my wicked good looks, right? I totally believe you.” He wiggles his fingers. “Give.”
Ryuji offers him the caramel ice cream cone in his other hand, letting him bite into it like some kind of psychopath. “Done?” he asks, shifting the tote bag tucked into the crook of his elbow, careful not to rattle the eggs inside. Akira bravely offered to carry the groceries, but he had obviously refused.
“Mmm. That’s good stuff.”
“Right? I read about the ice cream here when I was younger, and they were really hyping it up on the ad.” He takes a lick, grinning when the taste hits his tongue. “And on a summer day like this? Unbeatable. It’s really reminding me of last summer when we hung out everyday in your room eating crap, taking naps, and playing games.” It also helped that hanging out with his crush was a daily thing, he thought.
“And I got to hangout with my crush a lot too, so that’s always a plus,” Akira adds.
Ryuji stops, and Akira turns around to give him a weird look. “What?”
“You get me,” he says in awe.
“I sure hope so,” he tugs him forward, and they continue their walk, their shoes rhythmically landing on the wood in unison. A comfortable silence takes over, but that’s no good. Ryuji wants to hear him talk.
“So imagine you get ten million yen,” he starts. “What do you do with it?”
It’s not the first time he’s asked this. They discuss it often, eagerly like the dreaming boys they both are. Akira considers it and Ryuji loves that about him. It doesn’t matter how stupid his questions are—he will always answer them with as if it were a serious question.
“For starters, Yusuke’s getting a place as soon as possible.”
“Duh,” he snorts. “Apparently, his roommate brought someone back to hook up with them. Poor guy got so traumatized he slept over at Haru’s.”
“We should be glad that he didn’t ask them for poses,” Akira laughs. “Next, I’m making sure that Sojiro has enough for retirement.”
“Obviously. Rest in peace Leblanc—you make fire coffee, but no one’s there to drink it.”
“And then I’m making sure your mom has the funds for retirement for sure.”
“I love you,” he sighs.
“I know.” Akira starts swinging their hands back and forth. “Then with the rest, I’ll buy us some new shoes for when we start training again together, and whatever’s left we can split it up with the rest of the Thieves and they can do what they want with it.”
“I bet Ann would go on a shopping spree in France,” he says.
“Haru would probably donate hers.”
“Makoto’s is going straight into university. I can see her going in to get a Masters with that kind of money.”
Ryuji refuses to let his expression fall. “That’s her. Big bookworm with a capital B.” Stop talking about this, stop talking about this. “How about you, Sophia? Any clue what you’ll do with a boatful of moolah?”
A harmonic beep rings through the air and Akira passes her over to him. “I would invest in cryptocurrency and turn ten million into one hundred million,” she says cheerfully. “Then I would take that hundred million and turn it into one billion yen.”
Ryuji coughs, sliding her into his back pocket. “You know what? That’s my bad. I should’ve expected that, honestly.”
Akira plucks the remainder of their ice cream cone from his hand and throws it in his mouth, munching. Wordlessly, he takes out a pack of wet-wipes from his pockets and hands it to Ryuji.
“Thanks.” Reluctantly dropping his hand, he thoroughly cleans through his sticky fingers. “You didn’t ask me what I was gonna do with my money.”
He nods in a go ahead way.
“After I give most of it to my mom, I was just gonna give the rest to you.” Ryuji kicks a stray pebble. It skirts off the edge of the boardwalk. There’s a tug on his arm. “Yeah?”
Akira covers his mouth with a hand, before making an incomprehensible garble of noise.
“Huh? My bad, I didn’t catch that.”
A few seconds of vigorous chewing, he swallows. “I said,” Akira says, eyes glimmering the way it does when he gets really excited. “I was going to do the exact same thing.”
“Dude!” Ryuji throws his arm around his shoulders, tugging him in close. “You understand me like no one else does. What the eff!”
“I’m glad,” he says softly. Wrapping his arm around him, Ryuji blinks at the unexpected hug. “It’s nice that we're on the same wavelength.”
Suspicion tingles across Ryuji’s skin. “Hold up.” Pulling away, he squints his eyes at him. “No.”
Akira immediately looks to the side. “What?” he says, defensive. “It’s nothing.”
“No freaking way.”
“I think I saw a cool arcade back there, it has cool prizes that I think you’d like, and—“
“Kurusu Akira,” he says sternly, grabbing his face between his hands. “Don’t tell me that you’re jealous.”
“I’m not!” he insists, pushing his glasses higher on his nose. “I’m not, you know I’m not that type of guy.”
“But?” Ryuji prompts.
“But…” he hesitates. “I’d be happy for you, if you find that it’s easier to talk to other people that aren’t me.” Akira straightens up, pulling out of Ryuji’s grasp but inspects his hand like it were something to be studied. How strange it was to see his long, elegant fingers grasp his brutish, blistered ones. “I’m relieved that I didn’t leave you alone. I just...miss being your go-to, I think.”
“Akira.” He says slowly. “My man. The love of my fucking life. You are never not gonna be my go-to. You’re my go-one.” Rapping his knuckles against Akira’s temple carefully, “Your hometown is messing with you up here, making you say weird shit like that.”
“I know, I know.” Running his index finger down his wrist, Ryuji can feel how cold he is. “You knew what you were getting into when you started dating an overthinker.”
“As a chronic underthinker, no, I did not.” He kisses Akira’s palm. “But it works out, so it’s all good.”
Turning them both around, Ryuji starts walking. “I know this is super duper impossible for a guy like you, but I’m gonna have to ask you for a favor.”
“Anything.”
“You have got, to the best of your ability,” he bumps into Akira’s shoulder. “Stop stressing out.”
He frowns. “It’s my job to stress out.”
“It’s our job to stress out,” he corrects. “You and me. Founding Thieves. We share the burden, bro. We got into this together, we’re getting out of it together. That includes you worrying about our relationship outside the ‘Verse, and extend it all the way to what dingy hometown you took the bullet train from.”
“I’ll try,” he says doubtfully. “You’re kind of enjoying this, aren’t you?”
“What do you mean? No way I can enjoy the most perfect person on the planet be a little jealous over his boyfriend getting attention, what kind of asshole would I be?” And before Akira can say anything, “I know, not jealous, but I’ll take what I can get.”
“I love you.”
“I know,” he flashes a peace sign.
“I know you know.” A group of middle schoolers pass them, chattering about nothing and pointing out random things on the quay, all enjoying their summer vacation. “You know that you can tell me anything, right?” he asks suddenly.
Unable to help himself, he ruffles Akira’s hair, pitch black and hot to the touch. “You don’t have to tell me twice.”
“I don’t?”
Gray eyes look into his brown ones, earnest and trusting. Just like that, the light feeling in Ryuji’s chest vanishes. “No,” he responds slowly. “You don’t.”
“Good,” Akira nods, and sees where they were heading towards. “Oh, you took that seriously?”
“You bet your crisp ass I did,” he says, pushing the glass door open. The arcade is bright, neon, and littered with claw machines. Add that to the list of similarities from Tokyo. “I don’t fuck around with arcades. I’m in the top hundred players in the Gun Gale in Shinjuku.”
“Was that with Shinya or without?”
“Not important.” He surveys the area. “There it is. Can you grab us some change? I’ll pay you back.”
Akira waves his hand, walking towards the coin machine. “Don’t. What kind of a boyfriend would I be if I let you pay for our dates?”
“A hot one!” he yells. When he turns the corner, Ryuji collapses into a bright red racing chair. “Fuck,” he hisses, heart beating too damn fast for it to be normal. “Chill out, Sakamoto, jesus.”
It only gets worse when a familiar beep rings out. “Ryuji, your heart rate is at 160. Is everything alright?”
“Sophia!” he wheezes out, relieved. “Can you—will—” he stops, scrunching his eyes closed. “I’m having a panic attack, I think.”
“Searching for how to treat panic attacks,” she says immediately, and he sags into the cool plastic gratefully. “Deep breaths will help, slowly to the count of ten.”
His heart is beating so hard that he can barely hear the jingles and the whirrs of the machines around him. “Count out loud. Hurry, before he gets back.”
She does, and he grips the side of the chair as he focuses on breathing. The attack passes by faster than he hoped it would. “Thank god,” he breathes. “Thank you.”
“No prob,” she says, before hesitating. “Akira—”
“Will not know about this,” he cuts her off, rubbing his hand over his face. “I’ll tell him eventually, don’t worry, et cetera. I know all this. Ann’s been hounding me non-freakin’-stop. Just don’t tell him, Soph. Please.”
Before she can say anything, Akira comes back, pockets full of change and that signature small smile resting on his lips.
The bright side about missing out on Sapporo’s snow festival is having its tourism as its lowest point when you visit it in the summer.
Even the shopping district just outside Susikino isn’t very crowded; there’s the usual street vendors and shops with bright pastries and cute clothes. But even having it right beside the Sapporo Tower, it’s still nothing uncomfortable. At least, it’s not uncomfortable when you get to observe the environment through a phone lens.
“This is nice, isn’t it? I don’t think I’ve had much of an opportunity to talk to you yet, which is quite rude of me.”
“No prob,” Sophia replies easily. She was swaying from Haru’s neck, hanging by a silicone phone holder that she had bought from a convenience store. Futaba had guffawed when she saw it, but Sophia’s happy about the purchase. It’s fun, and it lets her people watch from the perspective of one of her friends. “I have been meaning to talk to everyone one by one as to better understand each of you.”
“Oh, good! What better use of a nice chat while doing some shopping along the way?” Haru chirps, thumbing through a rack of out-of-season clearance sweaters as they pass. “I have to admit, I’m not the best when it comes to fashion and whatnot. Most of the time, I ask Ann-chan to accompany me.”
“I can try my best! Online websites are constantly updating in order to provide their readers with the newest trends.” Idly, she takes a peek. “Wide-legged pants are back in style.”
“That’s a relief,” she sighs. “I never pulled off skinny jeans too well. Long, flowy skirts have always been my thing. It just gives off such a nice aesthetic, doesn’t it?”
Sophia smiles. “I think you’d look good in anything. Have you considered going punk? You’d look very dope and intimidating with a black streak in your hair and a leather jacket.”
“Now that I can agree with, but that’s more Mako-chan’s style, I’m afraid.” She pauses. “Actually, I bet Mako-chan would actually like that. Sometimes I feel as though she isn’t willing to branch out of her circle of clothes past a pair of Oxfords and a deep-coloured sweater. A push might be what she needs.”
She considers this. “Is it possible to buy clothes for her? That can be a possible ‘push’, quote unquote.”
“Hmm, I don’t think so. She would never let us do such a thing.”
“One moment.” Pulling out a few files from inside her memory storage, she clears her throat. “According to my data analysis, Niijima Makoto has high difficulty straying away from well-mannered behaviours. Do you think that includes saying no to gifts given to her? That can be advantageous.”
Haru stops walking and pulls the phone up so that they’re at eye-level. “Sophia-chan,” she beams. “I have a feeling we’re going to be very good friends.”
They continue walking down the street when Haru gasps suddenly. “You literally can’t shop, can you?”
“Of course I can. I can get anything in the world for you,” she says proudly. “Anything.”
“Alright, we’ll have to test that later, but I mean you can’t use what you buy,” she frowns, eyes troubled. “Your sweater is adorable, but you’re forced to wear it everyday, right? Can you even do your hair differently? Is it possible for you to pin it, or even let it down?”
Sophia finds it endearing that she would let such a thing bother her. She doesn’t even have a social insurance number, but Haru’s worried about hair clips. “No, but I quite like it the way it is. It doesn’t get in the way when I do my work, and in the Metaverse, it gets completely hidden as to let me do my fighting,” she explains, karate chopping in her screen. “But I can understand the human desire for change.”
“Would you like that?” Haru asks gently. “To change? Um, change out of your clothes, and change mentally. Either one.”
“Change mentally, of course! I’d love to understand my friends better and understand how to help them. It’s a vast mountain of knowledge, but I’d want nothing more than to decode the mystery of the human heart,” she says eagerly. “But for clothes...I’m not sure. I haven’t tried it. I’m pretty sure I can’t try it.”
“That settles it,” Haru looks both ways before crossing the street, jogging slightly.
Sophia perks up. “If you’re heading somewhere specific, I can give you directions.”
“No need.” She has an intense, hungry look on her face, not unlike the one she had when the new axe Akira bought had finally arrived at their RV. “We’re just about here.”
They stop in front of a store, and she can barely read the sign from the phone’s angle. “‘Case in Point’?”
Haru pushes the glass door open, greeting the cashier. “It’s a phone modifier shop.”
There’s no effort to explain anything else, but Sophia can confidently add ‘anticipation’ onto her growing list of experienced feelings.
“Out of curiosity—” Haru begins as they exit the modifier store, the cashier still bug-eyed from the tip she had left at his counter. “Can you see everything inside Akira-kun’s phone?”
“Yes,” she replies. The environment that she lives in, and more specifically, Akira’s phone, is now a bright, perfectly polished shade of rose gold with a mint outline. A far cry from the matte black that it was before. “Why do you ask?”
“No reason.” Her voice is sweet as sugar. “Out of curiosity once again, is there anything interesting? Anything worth noting?”
She jumps as Sophia’s voice suddenly morphs into Akira’s without warning. “Nice try,” the phone plays. “But no.”
And just as quick, Sophia comes back to the phone. “Sorry about leaving,” she says. “Akira had asked me to play that clip if someone ever, and I quote, ‘tried me.’”
Haru giggles. “Just like Akira-kun to be so thorough. Impressive as always, leader.” She peers down at her watch. “I suppose it’s about time to head back, isn’t it?”
“We still have eight minutes to spare.”
“We do. Perhaps we should take a stroll around the park?”
“Cool,” she says. “Wanna ask Futaba and Yusuke if they want to come with?”
“Sure?” Haru blinks. “That’s very specific.”
“On your two o’clock,” she points out. “In front of the book store.”
They watch as Futaba and Yusuke stand across the street from them. Futaba is aggressively pointing her finger at the books on display, then slapping her fist against her palm like she was devising a war strategy. Yusuke shakes his head wildly, comically putting his hands in his pockets and revealing that there was nothing inside. She sighs and walks away, tugging along a dejected boy behind her.
“Aren’t you going to ask them?”
“In a moment.” Haru takes them to the front of the store. “This isn’t a bookstore, I don’t think. What’s it called Sophia?”
After a quick search: “‘Sapporo’s School Supply Store’,” she says. “The alliteration makes it fun to say.”
“Indeed it does.” Peering into the store, Haru makes an introspective noise. “Now isn’t this interesting?” she hums. “Do you mind if I make one more purchase?”
“Not at all,” Sophia says, thrilled to add another point she had learned: If Haru wants something, there’s nothing that will get in her way.
“So,” Makoto starts, and Ryuji has to hold back a groan. He knows that tone. He’s memorized that tone. All the second years can feel her tone from a mile away. Hell, Ann probably took an instinctive step back just now. “Have you started to think about university?”
“Nope,” he says, wiping the sweat off his brow as they jog around the corner of Odori park. Back before he had left for his hometown, Akira and Ryuji would be up at dawn to train. Lately though, he’s been using any free time he has that isn’t planning for, prepping for, or actively doing a Jail run to sleep in the RV. And hey, he has no beef with Makoto, and it’s not like she can’t keep up with his training (she can most definitely kick his ass in hand-to hand), but she has a tendency to push when it comes to this sort of stuff. “Not a single thought towards it. It’s been pretty good, actually.”
“I can tell,” she agrees. “It’s almost like you blocked my number.”
“I did not!”
“So you actively choose not to answer any of my texts?”
“Ugh, don’t set me up like that,” he winces. “You know I’m stupid enough to fall for shit like that everytime.”
“Hold on.”
Ryuji grunts as he feels a hold on his shirt, forcing him to stop. “Ew, don’t touch my back, it’s Nigeria there.”
“First of all, it’s Niagara.” She spins him around. He’s only a little taller than her, but something about her always seems to tower over him. “Second, do you know why I keep pushing all of you to go to university?”
“Because you hate us?” he mumbles.
Makoto glares at him. “Try again.”
“...Because you don’t hate us?”
“Because I don’t hate you,” she repeats. “You’re all rowdy and wild and sometimes I don’t understand the jokes you make—”
“You’re just mad ‘cause you fell for a deez nuts joke.”
“But I do, inexplicably, love all of you,” she pushes on, and that shuts him up. “I know what you’re all capable of. Amazing things! I understand you all believe that I’m the be-all end-all, and I appreciate your compliments, but there are some things that only Ann can do, or Akira, or Yusuke.”
Makoto continues running, and he reluctantly follows suit. “And you. You can achieve things that I can’t even dream of, Ryuji.”
He resists the urge to yawn. “Thanks for the pep talk, Niijima.” Looking left, the gelato is looking real good. “Wanna get something to eat? I’m starving.”
“You aren’t very good at hiding secrets, Ryuji.”
Now that grabbed his attention. “Whoa, whoa, whoa there, prez!” Speeding past her, he holds out a hand to make her stop. “What do you mean by that?”
She raises a brow. “Nothing in particular, but your reaction is showing me that I should have meant something by it.”
He gnaws on the inside of his cheek roughly. “Okay, but why did that come into your brain? Why do you think I have some kinda secret?”
“I live with a prosecutor everyday of my life, of course I know when something’s afoot.” Pushing her hair back, she squints up at him. “You’ve been more...jumpy lately, yet somehow more laid-back than usual. I wanted to talk to Akira about this—”
Blood pours into his mouth when he accidentally bites too hard. “You talked to Akira?!” he half yells, red dribbling from the corner of his lips.
“Oh my god!”
“Fuck,” he clamps a hand over his mouth. “Sorry. Bit too hard.”
“N-no! Don’t apologize!” she reaches into her pocket and pulls out a napkin, pulling him to a stone ledge. “Sit and take this so you don’t bleed all over yourself. I’ll be back.”
He doesn’t bother speaking, only nods as she turns around. When she comes back, she’s holding a water bottle. “Here.”
Taking it gratefully, he takes deep gulps before spitting it out. “Why the hell does this taste like the beach?” he splutters.
“I didn’t say to drink it! It’s salt water to get rid of infections!”
“Why would you do that to me?!”
“Because I thought you knew to do that from the second-year health class!” she shoots back. “Gargle it and spit. Near the gutter, mind you, it’s rude to spit in front of kids. They might get the wrong idea.”
As if kids are gonna see him and think that there’s something worth remembering. He sips, sloshing it around his mouth before gently letting it dribble into the grated sewer. “Blegh.”
“You’re welcome. Keep at it. And while you’re doing that,” she sits next to him, shoulder to shoulder. “Do you want to tell me what’s been making you anxious?”
He pauses. “Anxious?”
Makoto gives him a stern look. “‘Experiencing worry, unease, or nervousness, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.’ It was covered in your midterm.”
“Ah, right,” he mutters. Gripping the fabric of his shirt, his heart is beating too quick for it to be normal. Then again, when was the last time it wasn't? “You think I’m anxious?”
“I’m not sure. Keep gurgling,” Makoto chides.
He does, the salt water still red whenever he spat, and she continues. “All I know is when my anxiety gets really bad, I chew on my lip. Sae used to chide me when we were younger, but you know, she got busy,” she shrugs, as if he didn’t know how much it pained her to lose her only family member to a career of protecting the wrong people. “When I mentioned it to Akira, he took it upon himself to check up on me regularly during exam weeks.”
To prove her point, she takes her lower lip and flips it out for him to see—white teeth marks, but old scars instead of anything fresh. Letting go, her expression is smug. “He hasn’t felt the need to check in for a while now.”
Spitting, water finally running clear, he grins. “Good for you. I’m glad to hear that, dude.”
“Thank you, but that wasn’t the point. My point was that I was only able to get better because I told someone about it. Someone I trusted.” Makoto turns to him, her gaze serious. “I know that’s what Akira is to you. Habits like these are harmless at first, but they can turn into something else more dangerous. I won’t stand for that. My own justice won’t stand for that.”
Ryuji opens his mouth, before closing it. I’ll tell Akira, he wants to say. How many times does he have to repeat that line before he starts believing it himself? “Okay,” he says, because it’s the only thing he can say without hating himself even more.
“Okay.” She pats his knee before standing. “I can get us some gelato.” She stretches, wincing as her joints crack into place. “If you’re feeling up to it, start your cool down. Unless you wanna keep training?”
“I’m good. Felt enough blood rush for the day.”
She goes to the ice cream stand, and he stares up at the blue sky.
Makoto’s right, because of fucking course she is. She’s right, he knows she’s right. But she doesn’t get it. To her, Akira’s a friend. A guy who helped her out and changed her life, yeah. If he hadn’t met her when she did, maybe she would’ve become a scummy adult who didn’t look up from market pricing and hedge funds.
But Ryuji? Ryuji would be dead without Akira. That’s a fact and a half.
To Makoto, Akira’s a friend. To Ryuji, he’s Akira, and you can’t be on a higher pedestal in his mind than that.
It was Yusuke who took the first step.
“Ann,” he greets cordially. “How do you do?”
She gives him a weird look. “Kinda trying to focus here,” she says, gesturing at the scene in front of them. They, Morgana, and Sophia were in the B team as they watched the rest of them try and get rid of the remaining Shadows in Mariko’s Jail, tersely attentive and waiting on Joker’s word in case they needed a last minute switch. The Jail was environmentally brutal; the ice underneath the soles of their shoes makes them skid more often than they’d like. It almost makes the fights seem quicker, one notch faster than usual.
Yusuke pays her dismissal no mind. “I, myself, am learning many new things lately. Can the same be said about you?”
In the corner of his eye, Futaba pauses typing on her laptop to face palm.
“Are you...” Ann says after a brief pause. “Is this a threat? Are you threatening me?”
“No—”
“Panther!” Akira’s clear voice rings out.
Ann dashes forward without question, high-fiving Morgana as they trade spots.
Futaba marches forward, glaring at Yusuke like he was crazy. “You dolt!” she hisses. “What was that supposed to be? I said be slick and cool, not act like a fool!”
“While I admire the rhyme scheme, I don’t understand what you want from me. That was as ‘slick and cool’ as I’m capable of,” he furrows his brow. “I even opened with a question that seemed as though the conversation would be a normal one, but then used that to transition into what I actually wanted to discuss.”
“Stop looking so proud of yourself and—”
“Fox!”
“Back in a moment,” he says before he’s gone, Makoto taking his place, leather uniform still smoldering from when she took a fire move head-on.
“What was that about?” Haru asks, swinging her axe like a picnic basket.
“Nothing, Noir,” Futaba sighs, plopping back into place where Ann had stood. Carmen had kindly left a warm patch of concrete in her wake. “Just Inari became a big ole’ dumb-dumb.”
“I see,” she hums. “So this has nothing to do with what you two have been conspiring about lately?”
Her eyes shot wide open. “Con...conspiring?” she stutters out. “What do you mean by—”
A particularly loud scream rips into the air, and everyone turns their heads to see Captain Kidd slam his hook into the ground, purple arms erupting from the snow and wiping out a huge chunk of Shadows all in one go.
“Hot damn,” Futaba says, directing her focus back to her laptop and making sure Ryuji has enough health to keep going.
“He’s strong,” Haru observes, all playfulness gone.
“Too strong.” After Futaba gives everyone on the main team a good amount of health, something on her screen makes her pause. “Huh…?”
“Noir.”
Haru turns around to see Makoto waiting for her. “I need to discuss something with you.”
“Of course,” she steps closer to her and drops her voice. “Is everything alright?”
“I’d bring this up with Joker, but I don’t want to bother him if I’m not sure if there’s anything wrong yet,” Makoto pushes her mask up. “But have you noticed Skull's been acting strange lately?”
“Mona!”
He swaps with Ann, her pigtails covered in snow. “Ugh,” she grimaces as she shakes it out. “I could try and melt it, but it’ll just drip down my back and freeze later on, and I do not want that.”
“Panther, I’d like your input as well, if you don’t mind,” Makoto says.
“Sure. What’s up?”
“I was just talking to Noir about this, but did you notice anything strange about the way Skull’s acting lately?”
Ann takes a step back. “Well, what—No—I mean, that’s your opinion, I think!” she exclaims. “To me, Skull's acting is completely normal. He’s normal—actually, scratch that, he’s better than usual. Nothing about him is wrong, I think, and that’s pretty outstanding and impressive once you consider that he’s the one with the life-long injury. Not that that has to do with anything!” Ann yells. “I just wanted to point out how far he’s come, and how much he’s kicking ass right now. Actually,” her voice shifts to a stage whisper. “Don’t mention this because I don’t wanna cause drama, but Fox has been a little weird.”
“Weird how?” Makoto whispers back, looking extremely lost.
“Just earlier, he asked me how I was.”
“...I’m not following.”
“No, Panther-chan has a point,” Haru breaks in. “I can’t say for certain, but I have a strong feeling that Fox and—” she points at Futaba conspicuously. “Are up to something.”
“Sophie and Fox?” Ann breathes.
“Panther!”
“Damn, again? That’s what we get for going into an ice Jail,” she grumbles, swapping with Yusuke.
Haru sighs. “Panther-chan isn’t the best with context clues, is she?”
“Hello ladies,” Yusuke greets. “What were we discussing?”
Makoto gives him a suspicious look. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”
His jaw drops, bewildered, but before he can say anything, Futaba waves him over. “Get your fox butt over here!”
“I...Alright,” he says, resigned.
“Look at them,” Makoto nods at the pair. “I think you’re onto something.”
“I think so too, but I don’t want to be too hasty. After all, the two of them are such good friends now; it would be unfair to assume negative outcomes without evidence, or at least confront them first,” Haru says nonchalantly.
She understands immediately. “You have evidence?”
“Something of the sort.”
“Noir!”
“Duty calls,” she gives her a thumbs up, before Ann comes back once again.
“I can’t wait for us to go to a really hot place again,” she kicks the snow with her heels. “Then I’ll be comfortably in the B team because all the Shadows have fire resistance to the max.”
“Oh good, she’s back,” Yusuke’s expression is one of relief.
“Fox—” Futaba warns without looking up from her laptop.
“Come here. There is something we would like to discuss with you.” Whether or not it was intentional, he rests his hand on the handle of his katana.
“Okay but before we start, I just wanna ask—what are you doing with Sophie?” Ann accuses. “It’s fine to be friends with her, but you have to be careful. She’s really susceptible to what we say right now, and if you try anything funny—”
“What are you even saying?” he says, offended. “I barely even talk to her!”
They all glance at Sophia, who had been standing perfectly still and silent. She gives them a wave. They all awkwardly wave back.
Makoto places a hand on Ann’s shoulder. “Panther, Noir meant Fox and Oracle.” Ann flushes red as she continues. “And while we’re all here, I wanted to bring this up with you as well. Have you all noticed something strange with Skull?” Futaba stops typing. “I’m not sure how to explain it, but I think he’s extremely anxious about something. You all know that I’m an overthinker, so I might have the wrong idea but…” she trails off.
Futaba glances at Yusuke. Yusuke glances at Ann. Ann helplessly glances at Ryuji, still fighting alongside Akira and the others.
“I know nobody asked me,” they all jump a foot in the air when Sophia speaks beside them. “But I can at least confirm for suresies that there is something strange with Skull.”
“Which is…?” Makoto prods.
“I don’t know the specifics.” Ann, Yusuke, and Futaba let out a breath. “But he did have a panic attack recently.”
“I knew it!” Makoto snaps her fingers. “He’s had signs of being anxious, but I wasn’t too sure about it.”
“Queen!”
She runs out, and Ryuji comes in, looking exhausted but pleased. “Hey y’all, what were we talking about?”
It was dead silent before Sophia steps forward. “Look what I can do!” she exclaims, changing the expression on her screen to be an emoji with a flower.
“Whoa!” His eyes bug out, and they all sigh in relief. “That’s awesome! Can you do more?”
“That’s super cool Sophie, but,” Futaba looks at Ryuji, skeptical. “Don’t you feel weak right now? Your health is way down.”
“Oh, I didn’t even notice,” he rubs the back of his neck. “Sophie, you mind?”
“Not at all.” She calls for Pithos and green sparkles fall on him. “Better?”
“Thanks, I owe you one.”
“Skull!”
“When the king calls, his knight answers,” he salutes, sprinting out as Makoto comes back in.
“So,” she glares at the rest of them. “What do the rest of you know?”
Ann groans. “Even if I did know something, I probably wouldn’t be able to tell you.”
“Wait,” Futaba points an accusing finger at her. “What do you know?”
“What do I know? What do you know? And for that matter, what does he,” Ann points at Yusuke. “Know? Noir said you guys are doing secret stuff together!”
“That’s preposterous,” he scoffs. “If it was secret, she wouldn’t have known.”
“That’s the dumbest argument I’ve ever heard.”
“How is it dumb?” he asks. “You can’t possibly think that just because Futaba and I are doing ‘secret stuff’ that it has anything to do with Skull’s situation!”
There was a pause. “Are those two connected?” Sophia asks. Futaba buries her face in her hands.
“That was...not the question I expected,” Yusuke answers weakly.
“Sophie!”
“God, I wish Joker would call for Inari instead,” Futaba groans.
Rushing out, Sophia high-fives Ryuji on the way. “Guess who’s back, motherfuckers?”
In an effort to bury their conversation, they all begin cheering overenthusiastically, Yusuke clapping politely. Bewildered, Ryuji instinctively gives them a thumbs up. “Thanks guys. Usually, my jokes don’t really land, but that made me real happy.”
“Uh, Skull,” Futaba raises an eyebrow. “How do you keep losing health? I didn’t even notice you taking a hit.”
“I’m low again? Damn, I didn’t even notice,” he groans loudly. “Queen, can you—”
“I’m on it.”
Just as Johanna heals him, Akira calls out once again: “Skull!”
“Joker really does rely on you, doesn’t he?” Yusuke observes.
Ryuji laughs. If they didn’t know any better, they would think it sounded a little nervous. “Well, gotta jet!”
High-fiving Makoto, he runs out. She stares at the remaining members of the B team. “You all know something,” she accuses. “And I understand if you’re all being loyal to him by keeping what you know close to your hearts. But remember this:” she takes a step forward, and they all take an unconscious step back, Futaba scooting from where she sat on the ground. “There comes a point where it’s actually more important to keep a person safe and healthy than to uphold a potentially dangerous secret.”
They all digest her words for a second, and flinch when a flash of blue flame appears, taking Akira’s Persona away.
“Finally.” He stretches his shoulders, satisfied. “That took awhile. Good work everyone, let’s keep going.”
Making their trek deeper into the Jail, Futaba half-jogs, half-speed walks to Ryuji. “Your health again,” she chides. “Seriously. I know I like to play around, but I always have my eye on you guys when you’re fighting. I literally have not seen you take a hit, but you’re getting drained like milk in a sink.”
He shrugs, unperturbed. “Whatever. You see my hits today, though? They were tough.”
“Yeah,” she agrees reluctantly. “But your health is still low. I’ll call Joker about that.”
Before she can turn, he grabs her wrist. “Nope,” he says. “I’ll ask Panther. Thanks though!”
Ryuji goes to Ann, and he can feel everyone’s eyes on him, watching him, surveying his every move.
All eyes except for the one that really matters.

Phan Cam: An epilogue... In Neo Yokio
Tumblr media
>Neo Yokio. Not too long ago, the town was in danger of occupation. But thanks to us taking the hearts of everyone here, we instigated a city-wide change of heart.
>After the change of heart, most of the Exorcists who were sent here, including Shiemi and Izumo, when back to our world. We are to go back home tomorrow as well. But for today, we’re just going to do a bit of sight-seeing, not to mention that Panther has to tell Headmistress Faragonda of how she transformed into Fairy Form.
>In the penthouse of Arcangelo Corelli, me and Fox came here to check up on Kaz. He and Arcangelo was having what I recognized as Squid Ink Fettuccine.
Tumblr media
Oh hey, you guys! You’re just in time for lunch.
Tumblr media
Pasta that is made with squid ink. I wonder what that’s like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh my goodness!
Tumblr media
I’ll have to remember the recipe the next chance I get to make anything.
Tumblr media
(sorry if the picture is small, Arcangelo, maybe next time) I can see why. It’s quite fancy and it’s Kaz’a favorite.
Kaz: Well it is the most melancholy pasta.
Joker: I’m not exactly sure what that means, but I guess you really like it.
Kaz: So, what brings your guys here?
Joker: Just wanted to make sure you two were all right.
Kaz: Well, we’re doing fine. No big problems to report.
Joker: That’s good to hear.
Kaz: Although, I’m still a bit confused.
Joker: Well it’s no surprise. You find out that the Magistocracy are descendant from demons, you lose your home, and your aunt. All in one day.
Kaz: No doubt about it. When news of it came out, let’s just say it’ll be a long time before any Magistocrat is invited to a party. I’m surprised none of the Exorcists from the Order are not coming after us.
Joker: The Order will still keep this city on its radar. If anything happens, they can intervene.
Kaz: That’s good to hear. But I’m also worried about you. Do you think they can handle a Magistocrat in their world?
Tumblr media
As long as I don’t do anything that could call their attention, it should be fine.
Tumblr media
And if they do try anything, they’ll have to answer to me.
Arcangelo: I like that in a couple. You’re willing to do things for each other.
Fox: At first, I only had Ren around to help me out of an artist slump. But after spending time together for a year, I realized something...
Tumblr media
It was much more than that.
Arcangelo: Ah yes, nothing is more inspiring than that special connection. Something I speak from experience.
Fox: You mean that song you and Kaz sung a the Dream Festival.
Kaz: Believe me, I’m still trying to get my head around it... (Of course, I have Jaden to thank for rapping.)
Joker: (Yeah, Ryuji said the same thing about Max.) So, what will you be doing now that your exorcisms will be for free? Will you start pursuing music as a career?
Kaz: ... I’m thinking about it. I still want to do exorcisms, though.
Joker: I don’t see why not. It’s your life.
Kaz: I know I’m going to have to adjust to these new changes, but I think I can manage if I have my friends at my side... And maybe you could be there, too.
Joker: Really? Why so?
Kaz: Why not? After all... when will I get to befriend a couple of Phantom Thieves again?
Tumblr media
You know? How?
Kaz: Wasn’t that hard, man. Ren’s powers are too much like a Magistocrat’s. Then you fought that fake god thing with a Demon Lord, Satanael I believe. The rest was simply putting two and two together.
Joker: So what will you do now? Turn us in? Beat the crap out of us?
Kaz: More like help you. You get your powers from a Demon Lord. In some way, that really does make you a Magistocratic Exorcist.
Joker: Me? A Magistocrat?
Arcangelo: It sure does seem that way.
Kaz: But I think this is the first time you’re using those powers someplace other than the Magic Dimension. So I was thinking and I’ve decided... that I might train you on how to use those powers.
Tumblr media
Are you sure? You don’t seem to have a handle on your own powers.
Kaz: I know. That’s why I’d like to think of this as a learning experience for the both of us.
Joker: Well, it does sound like it would be helpful in a pinch. It we could both use the training...
Tumblr media
Alright, you’re on.
Fox: I think you’ve just gotten even more Charming, as if you weren’t already.
Arcangelo: That’s the magic of Kaz. He takes something and makes it batter.
Kaz: That’s a bit of an overstatement. I’m just trying to remember what Helena said. I need a change in my life. This is the first step.
Joker: Then I hope that your first step will be successful and will lead to many more.
Kaz: Then it’s a deal then.
>Me and Kaz shake on it. I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship.
I am thou, thou art I… Thou hast acquired a new vow.
It shall become the wings of rebellion that breaketh thy chains of captivity.
With the birth of the Aeon Persona, I have obtained the winds of blessing that shall lead to freedom and new power…
Confidant: Ichiban
Arcana: Aeon
Rank: 1
Ability: Neo Riche
Kaz will train you on your powers at a Beginner’s Level.
Tutorial
Joker is now a Magistocrat. When you attack in either Melee or Range, it will be charged with energy for a stronger effect.
Your Magistocratic powers are only available if you have equipped with Arsene, Sataneal, or Raoul. It will not work with other Personas.
Your Magistocratic powers will get stronger each time you train with Kaz. The strength will double if your Confidant goes up a Rank.
Kaz: Okay, now that that’s settled, let’s eat before our lunch gets cold.
Arcangelo: Right, let’s celebrate a new era in Neo Yokio history. It’s almost like we’re celebrating New Years twice.
>We enjoy our lunch with our new friends.
>I have now acquired the recipe for Squid Ink Fettuccine. If I have the ingredients, it’ll be available to make it in my (Joker’s) Kitchen.
Tumblr media
>The Stray Sheep. Me, Fox, Kaz, and Arcangelo came here. Kaz and Arcangelo wanted to see us off. When we got there, we found Mona, Skull, Panther, Queen, Noir, Oracle, Crow, Violet, Wolf, Lavenza, Iwai, Ohya, Beauchamp, Mutton, Roderick, Mephisto, Lexy, Gottlieb, and Charles there. Oracle and Sophie had managed to establish contact with Headmistress Faragonda and a screen was projecting from Oracle’s laptop.
Tumblr media
Hmm. It sounds irregular, but this wouldn’t be the first time something like this happened.
Tumblr media
Really? It has?
Headmistress Faragonda: Of course, it was Bloom willing herself into her Enchantix. This is probably the first time I’ve heard of a Fairy, though not possessing Fairy Blood, will herself into having any Fairy Form. Particularly the basic Winx Form. But this just proves what I said was true. The stronger you get, the more likely you would transform.
Tumblr media
Does this mean Ann chan will be able to transform into other Fairy Forms?
Headmistress Faragonda: Only time will tell. But I would like to think so.
Tumblr media
Sweet! I can’t wait to see ‘em. I wonder what kinda sexy outfit she’ll be in.
Tumblr media
I’ll claw your eyes out if you continue to think pervy thoughts like that...
Tumblr media
Though now that you mention it, you’ve got any idea what size it would be?
Tumblr media
(forming fire in her hand) I will roast you both alive!
Skull and Mona: Eep!
Tumblr media
Look, all joking aside, what will this mean for Ann? She’s just completing her first year of college. I’m not sure if she’ll be able to transfer to Alfea or Tir Nan Og College. Nor let her go of bring COVID.
Headmistress Faragonda: True, Tir Nan Og is still reluctant about opening its doors since even Fairies are not exempt from this virus. And Queen Nebula is still trying deciding on whether or not to teach online with help from Tecna. Also, we cannot risk the virus being brought to Magix. But I will see what can be done.
Tumblr media
Congratulations, Ann chan. I think your parents will be proud.
Panther: Thanks... Now the only problem left is how to tell them.
Tumblr media
Really, you haven’t told them yet, Senpai?
Panther: I was getting around to it. But I will once we get back.
Tumblr media
I think you’re all missing the bigger picture here... Which school will she be going?
Panther: I guess that would be a problem. I could go to Tir Non Og because it’s on Earth so it’s close to home. But then again, Bloom and the Winx are at Alfea and I could learn a little more from them. I still need to think about it.
Tumblr media
You still have time before then. You’ll decide then.
Panther: I know. Thanks, Sophia.
Tumblr media
So, even the Fairy Schools are having problems with the coronavirus. It looks like True Cross Academy and the Cram School are no longer the only ones having problems with continuing operations.
Headmistress Faragonda: I hardly think this is any reason to rub it in, Sir Pheles. And it is not just our schools of the supernatural and the mystic arts.
Tumblr media
Like what? Hogwarts?
>Headmistress Faragonda and Mephisto were silent.
Tumblr media
Are you serious? That school’s actually real?
Tumblr media
Wait until my friend in Inaba hears about this. She’ll be laughing so hard to know that schools like that exist.
Tumblr media
Yeah, we were surprised too when we learned that Ilvermorny was real.
Tumblr media
That’s true... But I don’t think it would be wise to tell everybody. Some of them prefer to keep secret.
Ohya: Really? Well that sucks.
Tumblr media
Yeah, makes me wonder if there’s a school like that in Neo Yokio.
Tumblr media
Yeah. Hey, Kaz, is there a school for magic homies?
Kaz: Not really. We usually learn on the job. But I do wish there was a school like that.
Mephisto: I believe that can be arranged. Some of the Exorcists who are staying here are establishing a chapter here, despite that there will be no inquisition. The Grigori thought it would be best to have a place where the Magistocrats, young and old, can learn to better harness their powers. Without having to join the Order unless they desire to. So what do you say, Kaz Kaan? Would you like to join in this new Magistocrat Academy?
Kaz: ... I’ll think about it. For now, I’m just going to keep doing what I do.
Tumblr media
Good for you. Sometimes you need to keeping doing things you do best before you can find your path.
Sophie: That sounds good... Of course, it could just the filter.
Charles: I would like to believe that even Sadie would agree.
Skull: (confused) Sadie? Who’s that?
Kaz: You’ll meet her someday. Right now, it’s best that you don’t. (Mostly because I think this post already has enough characters.)
Tumblr media
Well, it looks like it’s finished.
Kaz: What do you mean?
Lexy: Me, Gottlieb, Boss, and Roderick have come up with something.
Tumblr media
Kaz: So? It’s a can of Caprese. See you’ve taken inspiration from Charles’ story.
Lexy: It’s not just any Caprese in a can. It’s non-alcoholic Caprese for underage drinkers. Boss and Roderick says that if we can get everyone to join in on this drink. Here, try some.
>Lexy opens a can and pours some in a martini glass. Kaz then takes a sip of it...
Tumblr media
It’s delicious! It’s almost as good as the alcoholic ones.
Lexy: (happy) You see? We also have the alcoholic ones, but I’m sure the non-alcoholic ones will sell, too.
>Are they really that good? I take one of the cans of non-alcoholic Caprese, open it, and take a huge sip...
Tumblr media
Whoa, you weren’t kidding! This is great taste! It really is like drinking a salad.
Tumblr media
So glad to hear that. It’ll be one of the crowning jewels here in the Stray Sheep. Even though most of everyone who’ll buy it will be from other worlds, you two will still get your cut.
Gottlieb: I’m sure it’ll be fine. We don’t care about the money anymore. Though we still need it, we won’t let it drive us from what is really important.
Lexy: He’s right. We’re not sure if it’s the change of heart speaking, but you have our word.
Mona: (whispering) Now that I think about it, this Caprese Martini could also be very useful.
Joker: (also whispering) I agree.
Mutton: (also whispering) I heard that. And I think I might arrange for that.
Joker: Can you?
Mutton: (adjusting his sunglasses) You’d be surprised.

Divorce Advice For Women

Get the advice of a divorce coach for the price of a book … and save yourself lots of time and frustration!
Imagine being able to calmly and confidently face the divorce process, knowing what to expect each step of the way so you can make the best decisions for your future.
When you’re facing a divorce, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by everything. You know you need reliable information before you make any major decisions. Where do you get it, though? For most women, advice from friends just isn’t enough.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi, my name is Tracy,
I went through a divorce myself, and have worked with divorcing women for several years. I know from experience what an impact divorce can have on a woman’s life.
When I went through my divorce, I was emotionally raw, worn down by all the decisions to be made, and frustrated by the lack of good information.
Consequently, I made my fair share of mistakes. Having learned my lessons the hard way, I made a promise to myself that no woman would ever have to face this journey alone.
As a result, I started the WomansDivorce website in 2001 to help other women going through a divorce in the United States, and have done so ever since.
The Facts You Need About Divorce!
Divorce is complicated. Every day I see the sad outcome of what happens when women go through a divorce unprepared. Unfair property settlements, outrageous attorney fees, and months (or even years) spent battling it out in court.
To help you get the best outcome from your divorce, I created a comprehensive guide based on the actual questions and concerns of real women just like you. Organized in easy-to-follow chapters, this manual will help you understand the basics of divorce and identify what needs to be taken care of before, during, and after your divorce.
“Thanks for publishing this…”
It reads like a labor born of love and concern for women and it comes through brilliantly. I’ve documented over $400 worth of books that I’ve bought about separation and/or divorce, but Divorce 101: A Woman’s Guide provided perspective that was more valuable to me than those put together. PSL
Helping You Meet the Challenges of Divorce
When you’re dealing with mixed emotions, upset kids, and an uncooperative spouse, you don’t have the time or energy to spend hours searching for the answers to your questions.
Let’s face it, it’s easy to get distracted, confused, and overwhelmed by all the information available on the internet. You can avoid this needless frustration by getting everything you need in one place, leaving you more time to spend with your children (and maybe even catch up on a little sleep).
“The information in this book is so valuable”
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! I am at the beginning of a divorce which I am filing against an emotionally abusive and controlling husband. The information in this book is so valuable to me as I am uncertain of my rights and of future consequences of decisions made during the divorce. This is the best $20.00 I have spent! Shelly R.
Practical Steps to Get You Started
Even though you’re probably struggling with your emotions right now, you need to start thinking about the actual divorce. Don’t worry though, everything is laid out for you so you can take it step by step. To help you prepare yourself for a divorce, you’ll discover:
What you need to know before you ever hire a lawyer or file for divorce
Financial precautions you can take so you’ll have enough money to get through your divorce.
How to find the right lawyer, and what to ask during the initial consultation.
Steps to protect your credit so you can start over after your divorce.
“Very clear and useful information”
Divorce 101 had very clear and useful information regarding the many things a woman needs to know before she sees a lawyer, and good advise for abused women. It was an excellent resource with information I have not read elsewhere and there forth do not know. I’ve kept it on my laptop to refer back to as my divorce progresses. Thank you for writing this book. Patricia C.
“The worksheets alone were worth the price of the book” ~ Jeanne
With Divorce 101, you’ll get handy worksheets to help you:
Organize the information you need for your divorce, saving you time and repeated trips to your lawyer’s office.
Determine your current living expenses to get a realistic picture of your situation.
Provide the documentation needed so you can get adequate support to survive afterwards.
Calculate the bottom line on assets and debts so you can get a fair settlement and have something to start over with.
Tracy,
I liked the worksheets you included. They gave me a complete idea of what I was going to be working with in regards to money, and especially my living expenses as a divorced woman as compared to now, where my husband pays most everything. Dee Ann
Discover Techniques For Negotiating
Because you were an equal partner in the marriage, you deserve your fair share of the marital assets. By understanding the issues and knowing exactly where you stand, you can negotiate confidently and ask for what you deserve. Plus, this woman’s guide to divorce” outlines different negotiating strategies to help you split everything as painlessly as possible.
I really liked the information that gave you, step by step, on what you need to do to make sure you get your fair share financially. It helped me be strong and stand up for my rights. Connie
What About the Kids?
When you have children, there is more to consider than just who gets the house and how everything will be split. Divorce 101: A Woman’s Guide will help prepare you for the various custody arrangements and visitation issues so you can decide how your children’s lives will be handled, not some judge.
The included worksheets serve as a tool to help you draft a parenting plan that fits the needs of your children and your unique situation. Having this well thought-out parenting plan will help avoid future conflicts with your ex and make life easier on your kids.
“This is a must have…”
This book is a must have at the beginning of a divorce. Things don’t always go well for women as we often aren’t as knowledgeable about the law and what can happen in a divorce. There was a lot of information regarding the children, which was excellent. P.C.
Understand How Support Issues Work
It’s common for a woman’s standard of living to go down after a divorce, but you can take steps to make sure you receive the amount of support you and your children deserve. Lets face it, raising kids is expensive, and both parents should share the financial responsibility. Divorce 101 can help you understand what’s important in determining both child support and alimony, as well as what your options are when the support payments aren’t being made.
“A woman must fight for her future”
Women must take an active role in their divorces. Hire the best family/divorce lawyer you can afford, snoop into everything you can. If your husband is stalling the divorce process keep track and have your lawyer demand attorneys fees for the stonewalling. I did it and won my retainer back, $7,500. Most women’s standard of living goes way down after a divorce whereas a man may suffer for a year or two. Therefore, a woman must fight for her future. JB
Won’t My Lawyer Handle Everything?
Here’s the truth: Not every lawyer has the time or inclination to hold their client’s hand through each step of the divorce process. In fact, most lawyers have many cases going at the same time and often use a legal assistant to do the majority of their work.
You are the one who is ultimately responsible for the decisions made in your divorce. By getting the information you need beforehand, you can understand what your options are, gain confidence, and do what is right for you and your children. Aren’t you worth it?
“Wow, like having your very own lawyer in your living room.”
Just open the book look for the answers. Don’t try to read it all at once, but keep it as your bible to refer back to. Very good work. Kathie

Clout and Conscience
A Practical Application for Using the Aristocratic White-Lady Voice in Real Life
I've joked for years that my porcelain complexion is really just brilliant, aristocracy white. Until about a year ago, that would have been the extent of discussing my race amongst mixed company, or even in the presence of other whites. After finding the alt-right in the wake of C-ville, I've learned a tremendous amount about what internalizing and projecting white identity really entails. This knowledge has motivated me to do my best to change what I can when I can for fellow whites who aren’t consciously aware of the calculated demographic displacement that has been accelerated since the Obama-Era.
Most notably, in the last 6 months or so, I’ve started leveraging my woman status and utilizing what I call “my aristocratic white-lady voice.” I have found that it is an effective way to challenge friend, foe and stranger alike to think outside of the safe zone they’ve been duped into believing is truth and in turn, shed light on where they can really find safety.
(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10817585113717094,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-7788-6480"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//cdn2.lockerdomecdn.com/_js/ajs.js";j.id=i;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");
I have some insights to pass along to others in our movement who want to adopt the challenge to make IRL outreach a daily goal—to constantly have that sense of agency at the forefront of our minds and for our people. . .
Here's my story.
My first bit of advice is to become known as a source of information for normal people around you, even if you think you can’t possibly keep up with everything relevant (let’s face it, you can’t, but try, and don't make excuses).
Being known as someone who is well-informed (with regard to often misconstrued historical “facts,” as well as current events)—someone people ask questions of, seeking answers about what is happening—sets us up to be people that, by nature, can be very un-confrontational in low-key redpilling.
When I say I leverage my woman status, I mean people naturally find me less threatening when venturing into topics that may otherwise come across as taboo. The reason for this may be that—either by their perception that I am not likely to be well-informed, or that I am not a confrontational threat because I do not have a vested interest in politics or current events—the bias exists even with other women.
Either way, I use this leverage—whatever the reason I find it in my tool kit—to my advantage and always think of myself as starting with the upper hand. However, this same leverage is the very reason why I have taken a keen interest in helping others—women in particular—see things in a new way. It is also why I am so careful to view this as a process. Most importantly, it is a process that can be used by both women and men in our movement to reach out to our respective normals.
Ultimately, if we can start discussing topics inside of the mainstream media, the NPC media, or even those that make it to the proverbial “water cooler,” and push the conversation outside of those basic talking points to begin providing alt-right takes on them, we have the opportunity to start doing real footwork in our daily lives and making inroads with people we can pull over to our side.
A real-life example of this in my recent daily life was with a co-worker who mentioned they saw something about the leave statement from Gen. Mattis. This person hadn’t made time to read all of the article but had only seen the headline. They asked me what was going on “because they knew I would know” - so a sense of trust had been established with this person, giving me the opportunity to break it down into manageable parts and with a viewpoint they would not have gotten from any news article - but a viewpoint that doesn’t immediately alarm this person that I’m a white nationalist. In this case, we talked through, but ultimately the bottom line they walked away with was knowing that Mad Dog was pissed Trump withdrew from Syria.
I was happy I had been able to get those thoughts out there and have them received so well because it opened up a decent conversation about why that was a good move and why we need to continue to withdraw from the area and let (((our allies))) manage their own business.
2018 gave us several prime opportunities to open discussions in this way, and I think one of the best had to be the NPC meme. It was great for a number of reasons, but one thing it's helped me to understand is that even we have over-generalized normies. There's a sort of caste system inside of the normie world. NPC has helped corral some of those sheep from the flock, and better identify whites that are open to finding white identity for themselves - but there are some that are on the precipice of being "minutemen ready” while there are others who are just frustrated and realizing this nice normal PC world they have always known is gone, and it disgusts them. Others are so low-info that they don't even have any idea just how much danger they are in, or if they do suspect it, they are choosing to live blind.
These are some very basic-bitch points to explore in a deeper delve later on, but to be really effective, I think we have to know what approach to take with each one of these types of people. Some in our movement have just blanketly said that we need to be more direct without caution. While I understand the urge to “confront” these people, I think it is more important to keep in mind that the message of the left is now explicit incivility, and even a mild perception of pushing a little on these people isn't going to resonate well with them (this may be where we saw a decrease in the white women’s vote in the midterms). We ought naught fight fire with fire in that way; at least not with those that will be most effective in increasing our numbers. The fact is, these folks are not likely to confront the fight on their own, so we bring the fight to them and give them the confidence and knowledge to know how to fight back and most importantly, permission to do so.
Let's talk about confidence first and how that relates to knowledge in a symbiotic way . . . This, of course, requires an honest examination of one’s own strengths and weaknesses. We need to play to our strengths and counter-balance our weaknesses. What I specifically mean by that is recognizing that there are 2 primary types of intelligence; those who are knowledgeable and those who are logical. These two are not mutually exclusive, unfortunately, as I am sure most of you already are aware. . . .we all know people who have a vast accumulation of knowledge but really lack the ability to apply that knowledge practically or in any meaningful way. There is a good majority of people who aren't big brain intellectuals on politics, history, or current events, but most whites have street smarts, common sense, or whatever else can be said of being able to think and reason.
There are a select few people who have a high degree of both, and in my experience, these folks also often have a third component that comprises of high emotional intelligence. They are naturally confident, active-listeners and intuitive in understanding the thoughts and actions of others. These are our movers and shakers. These folks have energy and a lot of it. Think Ann Coulter, Tucker Carlson.
Of course, the daily reality we encounter consists of people who are made up of different combinations of these types of intelligence to varying degrees on the spectrum. However, raising our self-awareness and knowing where we fall on that spectrum can provide us with motivation to not only become more knowledgeable through independent study, but in dealing with others, it is vital to find common ground and not let ourselves venture in to arenas we aren’t as well-equipped to handle (namely, because it is counter-intuitive and can actually deal damage by taking non-confrontational talking points and making them forced but unsupported – with regard to voicing alt-right tenets in daily interaction or as commentary).
I always like to keep in mind a phrase my dad began telling me when I was very young: "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt." My point being, that once we zero in on those individuals we need to engage with in order to keep the collective “us” moving forward, our credibility will remain delicate while trust is being built because of the doxa that surrounds a very new and “mysterious” movement to people who are just becoming comfortable with being conscious of white identity as a concept. We must manifest and/or amplify confidence to accurately represent our ideology, and that starts with knowing, accepting and profiting from our strengths and deferring our weaknesses to resources that can cover our personal deficits. That is how we will pass along our knowledge of the truth.
Knowing and accepting where we fall short also allows us to line up people in our corner who are made for those tasks, and we can point our friends in the direction of those people (and their works, ideas, even something as simple as sharing memes - thanks to @petercozy for all the great Graham clips during the Kavanaugh hearings).
The second thing is to keep a healthy perspective on where we ourselves started and where we have progressed. I think most of our alt-right leaders do an excellent job of reminding people to not be too judgmental or black-pilled about those still not awake. . . give them a little bit of rope, so to speak. But rope to tie around their waist so we can pull them out of the well of shame they no doubt have been cast in to.
What we want to be always leading up to, is permission to think outside of the conformed safe zone . . . I was always right-leaning growing up, and I cast my first vote for DUBYA, but by the time he finished his first term, I described myself as a "registered Republican, who could really better be described as more of a Conservative” . . . AS IF there were really a distinction to be made. This was my own intuition subconsciously recognizing I wasn’t all the way in with the GOP, but still too low-info/energy enough to not yet know that the neo-cons, paleo-cons or civ nats weren’t really going to offer me anything better.
I had a very brief period as a Libertarian and even considered voting for "what's his face"** but ultimately made my way to the Trump train and in-line with the rest of my cohort, the 53% of college-educated white women. (**I intended to look up the name of this candidate but I have decided to leave it as is because it is a literal testament to how low-energy and ineffective the Libertarian movement is).
I started looking in to the alt-right after C-ville, mostly as a morbid curiosity (how could I have NOT known about these horrible, monstrous people) and then the more I listened, the more I read, I eventually stopped fighting the notion that there wouldn’t be “just one more podcast,” but rather, maybe this was where I belonged. I remember hearing certain things about race, IQ and especially the JQ that left me with a physical feeling, a burning feeling almost.
Looking back on that now, I consider it my “un-shaming.” A literal shedding of white guilt. At times I disgusted myself, I worried what it meant for my soul to find refuge, relief, a sense of homecoming and purpose in ideals I had always been taught were inherently evil. This must be reconciled before we make the choice to be open with our beliefs or try to bring our people to our side because we will continue to be told that, and it takes great resolve to not only know that you are still right but to still like yourself at the end of the day.
I share my experience because as part of the 53%, I feel a keen sense that there are even more women in my position who agree but haven’t recognized that the consequences of the outcome of NOT trying to progress the white identity agenda are far worse than that first time of being called a racist or Nazi. Again, the first few times this happened to me, it stung, and I use that word because in terms of a physical feeling. That is literally what it felt like. I’m not one to kowtow easily, and I recognize that can be uncommon, but I don’t think I would have the fortitude to withstand this fight confidently without the alt-right as a movement, the knowledge it's given me, and the hope in knowing that I have a people behind me. My people. My white people.
I also want to be clear that I'm not making the case that swinging all of these women to the alt-right is going to be what takes us to the next level, but I am pointing to my experience because as a woman, presumably, we are raising the next generation (if the better part of this number haven’t bought into the fun, hip childless lifestyle). I also think that we don’t need all of these women to go all the way to the right in order to see success more clearly defined, but they do need to internalize the risks and promote the benefits that can be gained from a mindset rooted in white identity, if only in the periphery.
We will make great gains if they are on board with the idea of a perfect symbiosis. Then, if they aren’t willing to risk IRL outreach, we need them at least to support the men in their lives, so that they can return that to us - confidence, knowledge, and permission, which are all facets of safety. Women inherently need to feel safe, and we need our up and coming generation to feel safe and embody these same traits. Unfortunately, most of them just don't know how dangerous the circumstances have become. My desire to push the alt-right mindset into the mainstream is a direct result of exposing the danger of the current path for our young men and women.
I’ve accepted that a good portion of my white friends are not going to make it all the way across the Rubicon, but I nonetheless will never tire of leading the fight to them and helping them to unshackle themselves from the chains of white guilt.
Lastly, I would say that we cannot be bound too tightly to rules of engagement, in terms of tact. For example, to make an effect, we don’t always have to directly call out race, but can do so implicitly. There was a cute, young, white couple in the grocery store last week who saw some crazy group of kids running and blocking the aisleways, bumping into display kiosks while their grippos-and-gubment-cheese mother loafed casually on her phone. She was also obviously holding up the aisleway. We were about 10 feet away, and the guy turns to the girl and says, “We ARE NOT having kids.” As she was laughing and agreeing with him, I leaned in, put on my aristocratic white lady voice and said,  “Oh come on, don’t let poor choices and bad parenting from our neighbor here scare you off from the joy of becoming a great mom and dad.”
They were taken aback a little, as most people I encounter are when you even say the word “white” or “black.” In those instances, they immediately bristle and look around to see if anyone else was listening, and this wasn't any different except that I didn't say anything about race explicitly. They still seemed to understand knowingly, and ultimately they light-heartedly laughed, smiled politely and continued to shake their heads in a sort of dumbfounded way as they went around to another aisle to bypass the chaos.
I would never have been so bold a year ago. But today, I know what is at stake. Today, I accept that if I sit back and just watch, the great world my white ancestors built will crumble and burn - more than it burnt inside to know that the bitter lies I had been lead to believe were just a cloak of shame. Today, I know where I stand in my abilities. I am confident with the resources I have at my disposal in the areas where I am weak. But most importantly, today I have permission to have pride in my race, culture and to succeed in promoting the real values we want. Even when I fail, even if we all fail, I know where my people are and who really has my back.
(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10817587730962790,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-5979-7226"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//cdn2.lockerdomecdn.com/_js/ajs.js";j.id=i;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");
I do not think we will fail. I think this is just the beginning, and there is much work to do. We've already won in so many ways. However, the last thing I would say (and it is something I still struggle with) is the extreme sense of loss and sadness that is inevitable once you’ve noticed things enough and felt the despair that comes with acknowledging the very real risks at hand. Very few things in life have been able to zap my joy, and I do still find happiness and love in my personal life; but after we reach a point where embarrassment becomes one of the last raw emotions we feel – I think the reluctance of some of our more capable people (to risk their reputations) stems from that progression of seeing the truth, being black-pilled by it, so jaded and dejected that anger is only a reaction in rare personal exchanges.
I know where this weed has sprung forth and exactly where we cut it at the root. I’ve lived long enough to see “political correctness” morph from a mere zygote of the last era of civil discourse to the fully fledged rebellious teenager that screams “silence is consent, and you should tell everyone of your racist, bigot Trump supporting relatives that over Thanksgiving dinner.” But it scares me that our women aren’t afraid that this is the kind of thing their sons and daughters will hear. The kind of world where this is the new normal. Women who don’t fear to break away from traditional mores opens the door for Woodrow Wilson’s dream of self-determination to take full root. These women will instead look to other women, emboldened with the centurion-like spirit of the Pussy Hat Brigade, instead of the men who were by the laws of nature designed to keep them safe. They will not raise men who, if they were that young man at Kroger, would have turned to his wife and said “We WILL NOT ignore our children and permit them to behave that way” and feel safe saying it loud enough for anyone to hear.
I propose that our stance as a people, a new people, be that of the New Aristocrats - not a reversion back to the pre-1900’s world of Aristocracy. There were obviously problems with that particular era of sovereign rule, but I find divisions in our movement most apparent when we argue about which past history or ideology we ought to seek to resurrect. None of them, in their entirety . . . perhaps we borrow pieces here and there, but we are in a brand new era of technology and that means we need a new era of sovereign rule - New Aristocrats. All of the previous ideologies are but pieces of yarn, for a new tapestry that must be woven to represent a new age, but with a proven mindset and insights gleaned from generations before our time.
I am not a policy, ethics or philosophy scholar, so I leave that debate to those who have invested more time in exploring those realms (challenging both myself and others to become more well-versed in those areas). For me personally, I think in terms of the front line I am capable of dealing with - the logic to be had with people like myself, who are just now awake, raising families, slaves to jobs they hate and so with that, perhaps my main point is that it just starts with a daily attitude. A uniform of personality, if you will. Encouraging the meek to not bow their heads down and try to engage a warm and fuzzy smile to be returned when they see a POC looking down at them, dead-eyed - instead, return that cold-blooded stare with the Aristocratic and strident flare that emanates a position of authority - one that is a result of knowledge, confidence, and permission to embrace white people, white culture and white identity politics.
It is the same in love as in war; a fortress that parleys is half taken. ~Margaret of Valois

Nell Minow's Top Ten Films of 2018
It is remarkable how often movies, which can take years to make, seem to arrive at exactly the right time. This year, I was especially moved by films from black and female directors. As usual, my top ten list has a number one, and then everyone else tied for second place.
THE SECOND PLACE NINE
"Black Panther"
Superheroes are fine, but it is the supervillains who make all the difference in comic book movies, and Erik Killmonger is the best supervillain ever, making Thanos, who knocked off half of the Avengers, look dull by comparison. Of course he was played by one of the most charismatic actors in Hollywood, Michael B. Jordan, who enters his first scene with such confidence, such sheer joy in his sense of who he is and where he is going, that we cannot look away. Co-writer/director Ryan Coogler gave him a backstory so compelling it inspired a #killmongerwasright hashtag. And he wasn’t wrong about what was wrong; he was only wrong about what to do about it.
There was a nice parallel to that dichotomy in the scene Coogler says was his favorite, between Nakia, who is loyal to the royal family, and Okoye, who is loyal to the rules. Two of the film’s strong, brave, brilliant female characters have a loving, understanding disagreement about what to do when a tyrant takes the throne. Every element of this movie was thoughtful, nuanced, illuminating, and meaningful, words we don’t often use about comic book movies. But thanks to this one, we know we should expect that from now on.
"Blindspotting"
Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal had me holding my breath several times as I watched this funny, sad, scary, brave, wise, film about a man in the last days of his parole, trying desperately to stay out of trouble in a world that keeps throwing trouble in his way. It’s tough to make a movie about ideas that does justice to its characters, and it's just about impossible to do that and throw in discussions about art, gentrification, race, and parenting. Now imagine that it’s also going to have a confrontation that includes a rap monologue. That is a very high bar, and this movie clears it easily.
"Sorry to Bother You"
The title of this film is just the first lie that call center employees tell the prospects they are trying to sell. But even before he gets to that fake apology, Cassius “Cash” Green (Lakeith Stanfield) is lying about who he is. On the advice of his cubicle neighbor, he is using a “white voice” (provided by David Cross) to ingratiate himself with potential customers. And it works so spectacularly well that he is soon getting promoted. His activist/artist girlfriend (Tessa Thompson) does not approve. Writer/director Boots Riley spent time as a telemarketer, and he knows how to entice his audience to stay with him, even to “buy” something we were sure we could resist. The “white voice” switch-up is just the easy provocation that leads us to a place we never thought we would find ourselves, engaging with fundamental ideas about capitalism at the wildest party in any movie this year.
"A Star is Born"
Depending on how you count it, this is either the fourth or fifth re-telling of the real-life inspired story of the broken down star who helps, then loves, then almost destroys a talented newcomer. And yet writer/director/lead actor Bradley Cooper found a way to make it new again, with life imitating art as a movie star is born with Lady Gaga in her first dramatic role. She is compelling and utterly believable as a pop star, of course. But what we have only glimpsed before in the performer known for her brash videos and outlandish costumes (that meat dress!) is her ability to be completely natural and vulnerable. I love the way that, like in a classic Broadway musical, every song in this movie carries the story forward and tells us something about the characters.
"Mary Poppins Returns"
We took it for granted that this movie would have visual Disney magic. No one assembles a more gifted collection of production designers, costume designers, and visual effects designers than Disney, and no studio has a better, more organic sense of its own history and culture. So when Disney decided to revisit the 54-year-old classic based on P.L. Travers’s novels, after having already mined its own history with a movie about the making of that movie, it was fair to expect that it would look and feel as though we had never left.
The magic touch is there, with gentle references to the earlier film, including an animated adventure that looks like the old-fashioned hand-drawn, cel-based animation that was Disney’s specialty, and an enchanting appearance from Dick Van Dyke, who played two characters in the original. Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins, and “Hamilton'"s Lin-Manuel Miranda as her lamp-lighting friend, are practically perfect in every way. And, as “Saving Mr. Banks” taught us, the real magic is not just about fantasy adventures but about healing the family. The songs, the special effects, and the imagination are a lot of fun but what makes this movie top ten-worthy is the heart.
"Green Book"
Maybe sometime in the future it will be possible to have a movie where a white person teaches a black person something important without being a white savior, or a black person teaches a white person something important without being a "Magical Negro," but it does not seem likely now. So this movie based on the real-life 1962 story of a sophisticated black musician touring the Deep South with a crude, provincial New York Italian white guy seemed like an inevitable cringefest (and, to be fair, some people do see it that way and they could be right). But for me the race/class/education/sensibility/sexuality divides are handled with nuance, sensitivity, and humor, and of course infinitely helped by Don Shirley’s music. There’s a reason the road story has been humanity’s most enduring narrative, going back to The Odyssey. Away from home, we have adventures. We find ourselves, and, if we’re lucky, we find each other.
"BlacKkKlansman"
There could not be a better match of director and story than Spike Lee and the real-life experiences of the first black cop in Colorado Springs, who went undercover over the phone to infiltrate the KKK and then, when it came time to attend meetings, sent a white colleague to impersonate him impersonating a racist white man. This film is so smart it crackles with the energy of its ideas. It is exciting, it is funny, and it evokes the style of the era perfectly with its clothes and filmmaking. "BlacKkKlansman" has a sensational brief appearance by Corey Hawkins, every bit as thrilling a speaker as the man he is portraying, Kwame Ture, and it has a tremendous breakthrough performance by John David Washington in the lead role.
"Support the Girls"
I am so glad that Regina Hall is finally getting some of the attention she has long deserved for her performance in “The Hate U Give” and in this film, a day in the life of the manager of a Hooters-style “boobs, beer, and big screens” restaurant. Dealing with constant problems ranging from trouble to catastrophe—from the hapless would-be burglar stuck in the heating vent to the waitress who goes back to her abusive boyfriend to the boss who insists that no more than one black waitress can be on each shift—she shows us the thousands of calculations she makes every day. This is a sympathetic, deeply human look at low-paid service industry people with no other options. Hall’s performance is deeply lived and vibrantly alive.
"Eighth Grade"
When author Anne Lamott was pregnant, one thing she could not stop worrying about was the "agonizing issue of how on earth anyone can bring a child into this world knowing full well that he or she is eventually going to have to go through the seventh and eighth grades." There’s a reason that even decades later, people still have nightmares about middle school. And in “Eighth Grade,” writer/director Bo Burnham and star Elsie Fisher evoke the terrible defenselessness of that stage of life so powerfully I kept having the sensation I was standing in the front of the school cafeteria, tray in hand, hoping anyone would ask me to sit at some table somewhere. This astonishing first film is so meticulously observed, and Fisher’s performance is so open-hearted, that it is easy to overlook just how smart it is, how carefully written, how well structured, how cinematic. Watch it twice, and you will see that Burnham is inviting you to sit at his table.
THE BEST FILM OF 2018:
"If Beale Street Could Talk"
I was enthralled and completely captivated by Barry Jenkins’ adaptation of James Baldwin’s novel about a devoted young couple caught up in an unjust justice system but still somehow able to hold on to their unbreakable connection. Jenkins honored Baldwin and his characters by bringing the full range of cinematic art to their story, impossibly beautiful actors with sizzling chemistry, performances of extraordinary sensitivity and precision, lush, beautiful cinematography and score, all of which gave the characters the dignity and understanding often denied people on the margins.
Honorable mention: "Capernaum," "The Favourite," "The Hate U Give," "Hearts Beat Loud," "Incredibles 2," "Leave No Trace," "Paddington 2," "Ralph Breaks the Internet," "Roma," "Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse," "Vice," and "What They Had"

The Virtues of Virtual Behavioral Health
By now, many of you have probably seen media (or social media) stories about telemedicine. Maybe you or a family member or friend are part of the 20 percent of the population that has already benefitted from “virtual health care.”
Even ardent supporters wouldn’t say telemedicine can replace all health care interactions, but I do believe that the increasing availability of virtual options — supported by advances in technology, more providers offering virtual services, and more insurance plans covering them — is good news for all.
I see the value of virtual visits every day as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Pennsylvania and an Energy Wellness Coach & Consultant who works with people all over the world. Since I am an in-network therapist for Highmark health plan members, I am glad that Highmark also sees that value and has been a leader in covering and promoting the use of telemedicine.
In my practice, virtual visits occur through secure videoconferencing technology that is compliant with all provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH). On the patient side, that means someone can connect with me from anywhere, through their computer, smart phone or tablet, and trust that they have a safe, confidential connection.
Virtual visits are convenient — no worries about driving or traffic, no need to reschedule appointments every time something comes up that would prevent you from getting to my office in person. Having a virtual option also gives you a broader pool of providers to choose from — if I’m the right specialist and “fit” for someone, we can work together even if you live hours away. And, regardless of location, some people just feel more comfortable getting mental health services in the privacy of their home or office.
I’ll share two stories that illustrate how these advantages play out for real people — with names and locations changed to protect privacy. Both stories involve trichotillomania, one of my areas of specialty, but I’ll emphasize that I use videoconference visits successfully for a wide range of patients and conditions. People choose a virtual visit option because it makes it easier to fit therapy into a busy schedule, or allows them to work with a specialist far away, or eliminates practical or emotional obstacles associated with in-person visits, or because they travel a lot for work or are a student who wants to keep seeing a hometown therapist while they’re away at school, or many other reasons. But it all starts with knowing that the option exists and, for Highmark health plan members, is covered!
One advantage of virtual behavioral health is that you can have your appointment in the comfort of your own home…or anywhere you have a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Kristi: Specialized Care and Convenience
Kristi is a busy young professional in northern Pennsylvania — hours away from my office in McMurray, south of Pittsburgh.
From an early age she struggled with trichotillomania, a disorder that causes people to pull hair from their scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, pubic area, beard, chest, legs, or other parts of the body. There is no known cause, but it is estimated that up to four percent of the population will experience this condition at some point in their lifetime. From age 11 to 36, I had trichotillomania; in fact, that experience was a primary reason that I became a counselor to help others.
An added frustration with trichotillomania is that it can be difficult to find counselors who specialize in treating the disorder. Sure enough, Kristi explained to me that when her condition began in childhood, her parents took her to provider after provider without finding much help. As a young adult, she began going to a counselor who was trained to treat obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), but wasn’t familiar with trichotillomania. She continued seeing that provider, but results were limited. For a while, she then gave up counseling altogether and tried to go it alone.
Fortunately, Kristi never gave up searching for specialized support. She finally found a practice in her region that specialized in trichotillomania. Although she was disappointed to find out that they weren’t taking new patients, they referred her to me.
Without virtual visits, our work together wouldn’t have been possible due to the distance between us. But because I offered that choice, and Highmark covered that choice, Kristi was able to begin seeing me on a weekly basis. No matter what else was going on in her busy life, getting to her appointment was as easy as pulling out her laptop and logging in to our secure videoconference portal.
Through therapy and my weekly “homework” assignments, Kristi identified the triggers for her hair pulling, along with ways to handle those triggers without pulling. We worked to understand her struggles and clarify her goals in a larger context, including a strategy for overcoming and then staying free of trichotillomania. I do try to have a first meeting with each patient in person before we go virtual, but the truth is that there is nothing I do in helping someone like Kristi where a videoconference isn’t just as effective as if they came to my office.
A Blessing for Parents: Anne and Emily
Think about the frustration Kristi’s parents must have felt being unable to find help for their child, and now I’ll tell a story of how virtual behavioral health eased that frustration for another parent: Anne.
Anne’s daughter Emily began pulling at her eyebrows and hair at age 8. Her mother also noticed that she was withdrawing from day-to-day activities and seemed distant, so she knew something wasn’t right. When she saw an episode of 20/20 on television about trichotillomania she felt like she might have the beginning of an answer.
But then what? Trichotillomania was only recognized as a disorder in the late 20th century, research is still somewhat limited, and many health care providers have little understanding about what it is and how to treat it. Anne couldn’t find a provider she was comfortable with in her rural region of Pennsylvania — and she wasn’t sure she could manage the logistics of traveling to one farther away.
She found me on the website of the TLC Foundation, a great resource for trichotillomania and other body-focused repetitive behaviors. Once again, the option of virtual behavioral health visits provided by me and covered by Anne’s Highmark health plan, made the difference.
Virtual visits also meant Emily could get counseling in her own home; many children feel more at ease and are better able to focus on therapy when they’re in a familiar setting. During our sessions, I’d sit in my office in McMurray, and Emily and Anne would be at their dining room table many miles away.
In just a few months of weekly visits, we made progress that Anne called “remarkable.” I give her much credit, first for finding a specialist who understood her daughter’s condition, and then also because, as an occupational therapist, she was familiar with sensory integration and quickly understood how to help with Emily’s exercises and homework assignments. Eventually we got to a point where we felt confident about Emily’s progress and reduced the therapy sessions to once a month.
Virtual Behavioral Health, Real Improvements in Care
Now, virtual behavioral health is not for everyone. Some people naturally prefer in-person counseling. And although I collect emergency information upfront for my virtual patients as an added safety measure, there are conditions, like schizoaffective disorder or severe depression, where I do not recommend a virtual option.
Still, as one choice within the nation’s larger system of health care, telemedicine has too many benefits to ignore. As is true in general, behavioral health doesn’t get as much attention as it should when discussing the virtues of virtual health care. But as someone who has provided behavioral health services for nearly 25 years, I see the ability to offer an insurance-covered, virtual behavioral health option as a major improvement to the total health care experience.
In all areas of health care, and especially in behavioral health, we know that some people fall through the cracks of the system and don’t get the treatment they need. Virtual behavioral health helps eliminate some of those cracks: lack of access to nearby specialists, challenges involving transportation or schedule, discomfort with being seen at a mental health services facility or practice. Virtual visits give you a broader range of choices for care — and the care comes to you.

Kathie
“The Woman’s Guide to Divorce” has it all!
By knowing what your rights are, you can make smart choices and avoid the potential pitfalls of divorce. This guide will take you by the hand and answer all your questions!
“For a comprehensive, step-by-step guide on the basics of Divorce, you simply can’t go past Tracy’s book …..a must read.”
“Divorce 101 is a refreshingly practical, hands-on guide written specifically for American women facing divorce. This highly informative book will leave you with a clear understanding of the options available to you when it comes to separation, preparing for divorce, the legal aspects of the divorce process itself, financial and property matters, family violence, custody arrangements, parenting plans, visitation and a whole lot more. Tracy takes the time to point out no-nonsense tips on the do’s and don’t of divorce. Post-divorce paperwork issues that are often overlooked (particularly the need to do a new Will) are also covered.
Barry Roche Author of “How To Win When Facing Divorce”
So What Does “DIVORCE 101: A Woman’s Guide” Cover, Exactly?
Not sure whether “DIVORCE 101” can really help you get through your divorce?

Kathie

Shelly R.

Kathie

Dee Ann

Kathie

JB
