I’m gonna talk about prophecies again! (I also did, in fact, make that graphic just for this! I love it.)
So I’ve mentioned before how Charmed’s prophecies are... unique in that there doesn’t seem to be a specific goal or outcome laid out for any of the prophesied characters. To quote myself, “The point of the prophecies seem to basically be warning, “hey! we’re gonna make a super special, powerful witch so uhhh, try to kill/turn them, thx!”” And like. what if that is the point of prophecies?
More specifically, what is prophecies are a warning that a witch/collective of witches with enough power to alter/break the Grand Design are coming? Hear me out! As always, our main three prophesied characters/groups are: Charmed Ones, Twice-Blessed, and Ultimate Power. What do all three have in common? Unmatched power. Let’s take a look here.
Charmed Ones - let’s see if I can word this right, but the sisters successfully rewrote the Grand Design to save Leo. You can make the argument that they had to convince the Angel of Destiny, but I think that it’s pretty important that the Angel of Destiny literally had to compromise on this with the sisters. Furthermore, they literally stopped the Angel of Death twice. The first time, they outright stopped him from taking a soul by saving Arthur Casey (albeit temporarily). (Also, the deal to save Paige? Counts.) The second time, they cast a powerful enough spell that it affected the entire world, outright hiding Leo from the Angel of Death before aforementioned compromise with the Angel of Destiny. Furthermore, the sisters drastically tipped the scales of Good and Evil, singlehandedly dictating who would be in control for at least the near future. I mean, their collective power is strong enough to impact the entire world with little to no issue and they regularly went up against beings that other witches had no chance against (both as outright enemies and extremely powerful Good/Neutral beings).
Twice-Blessed Child - canonically managed to disrupt the Grand Design enough that magic is exposed and Chris had to travel back in time to even try to fix it. I’ve said before, but that is pretty clearly not what the Grand Design was supposed to be and I think that Wyatt was able to kill some pretty powerful beings to do so.
Ultimate Power - frankly, very young and untrained (Billie didn’t even have her powers for a year by the end of the show) but were strong enough to take on the Charmed Ones. They vanquished an unvanquishable demon when even the sisters couldn’t. (Admittedly, they didn’t try to push it but still.) Billie traveled through time under her own power, something we saw no other witch do. (Even the sisters used spells, potions, and help from other beings.)
All three were also able to circumvent the protection that forces of Good and Evil placed on the Hollow to summon it without members of the opposite side helping them. By relying on their own magical abilities, they overpowered all of that to summon it to themselves. Just. Over and over and over again, we see all three collective/characters demonstrate extraordinary power that no other witch we see come even close to matching, much of which causes direct problems for literal agents of the Grand Design. Each one of them have the power to directly tip the balance one way or another (which is more mitigated by the fact that there are three different prophesied characters/collectives at the same time).
The thing that I feel best supports this idea is the unchanged future honestly. The Charmed Ones were self-taught and trying to learn everything by themselves while dealing with demons and losing people and everything. (I also headcanon that they never reach the full depths of their power during the show, but that’s a different theory that includes comparing the sisters’ powers to when they were kids.) Billie is young, similarly untrained, and then has half of her collective gone with Christy’s death. Wyatt is. a baby. There’s also the fact that by virtue of being good witches, the sisters and Billie have a limit on exploring their power to avoid harming others. We see what happened in the unchanged future when a trained, experienced witch who didn’t care about harming others decided he didn’t like the way the world was. It was something that was definitely against the Grand Design that even Good and Evil worked to uphold. (As always, he exposed magic!!)
It also adds layers to why the Elders are so wary about the Charmed Ones and why the Triad treat the Ultimate Power as puppets instead of partners. If you cannot keep them under strict control, it’s not just your side that’s in danger but the very world.
Just. Prophecies as a warning that witches who can shatter the world are coming and be prepared. (if you cannot make them join your side, kill them because they will tip the balance. but be prepared even if they are on your side, because they’re still an uncontrollable threat.)
