thank you kindly to the 11 people who responded, none of whom liked 1c, which i only listed because merriam-webster's entry for "beef" includes
4 plural beefs : complaint
and i was like girl since when is it plural. thought i was going crazy. no the dictionary is just wrong lol.
which of these sentences sound(s) natural to you?
1a. I've got a beef with you. 1b. I've got beef with you. 1c. I've got beefs with you.
what about this sentence, does it sound natural to you?
2. I'm beefing with you.
this is for a crossword being published in the us, so i'm mostly interested in how usamericans would answer, but others can feel free to answer as well, please just tell me if you speak a version of english other than one of the american dialects!
#i actually kind of love it when the dictionary is wrong. idk why it's just nice. Lexicographers Are People Too#i thought about asking whether you can use beef as a verb in a non-continuous aspect#so like 'i beef with you' or 'i beefed with you' instead of 'i'm beefing with you' or 'i was beefing with you'#but ultimately it didn't matter for my current purposes so i was like eh whatever#'we've got beefs' <-merriam-webster no one says this according to my focus group N=11#also shoutout to gamebird who said that 'i've got beefs with you' makes it sound like we co-own some cattle. made me laugh
