my rats have not yet been especially affectionate to me in a way that I can easily recognize, but I am strangely deeply touched by the fact that they love to chew on my toenails but are extremely gentle with the fleshy parts of my feet.

1. What’s the first thing they usually do to get the other’s attention?

In most scenarios, LXC can just say "Wangji" and LWJ will stop whatever he's doing immediately. And LWJ just stands somewhere around LXC and LXC knows he wants to say something.

But if they want each other's attention without other people noticing it, they can just Pointedly Glance at each other and they'll get the message. Actually, they can just have entire conversations like that.

2. How comfortable are they with touching/being touched by the other?

Okay, so I have unnecessarily specific headcanons about this, actually. I don't think LWJ Secretly Likes Touching but is just Repressed - I think he doesn't like touching 95% of the time. And while I think LXC is more physically affectionate, the appeal for him is to make the other person feel loved, so if that's not LWJ's love language, then he doesn't see the appeal of it in this particular relationship. But if, say, one of them is injured and there's wound-tending to be done, they're not at all uncomfortable about it and would be very confused as to why people might assume they would be. So basically - they're very comfortable with it, but don't do it often.

Also, I feel like baby Jades were more touchy feely than they are as adults, because that's how children work, but they were never particularly physically affectionate; I can see baby LWJ toddling along holding gege's hand everywhere he goes, but I don't think he'd be one for hugs and kisses, for example. LXC on the other hand probably was cuddlier, but other than his mom, I don't think he had many outlets for that; not because LQR would scold him, but because he figured out at an early age LQR doesn't enjoy this kind of thing and his eldest daughter syndrome is very strong, so he stopped doing that. (Which may or may not have worried LQR a lot, but he simply doesn't know enough about children to figure out how to fix that so he just... doesn't.)
