If I could be arsed to learn how to edit videos and had some kind of mic, I would 110% make a two part video essay series on the politics of Jurassic World because MY GOD, there's so much to dissect.

The first part would be about how the park is the epitome of neoliberal futurism for techbros, including the way the park so easily falls apart though I doubt that aspect is purposeful. Everything is aesthetic first and function second, and we can't possibly use any of the reliable infrastructure we've already come up with because a train is not gonna get us to Mars, but a monorail might.

And the second would be about the buckwild terrible gender politics going on. The movie is deeply unsympathetic to Claire seemingly because she's a woman who prioritised her career as it's both centre to her character arc and also an inciting event of one of the plots. Not to mention the whole Zara thing or the Owen and Claire thing or the stupid "him, I meant him, line. The movie is rife with misogyny, but it feels like that specific misogyny was isekaied over from backlash to second wave feminism.

I could talk about it all for so long because in a way, it feels like a perfect time capsule for 2015. Back when people took Claire running in heels to be this feminist statement to be made fun of and not just a deeply misogynistic movie trying to sell you feminism. And back when Elon Musk managed to get away with his "I'm the real life Iron Man" shit, and people believed he was smart and all his plans would come to fruition. 2015 was a great time to be a tech bro in Silicon Valley with people just throwing money at all your fake promises.

yknow i really really try to see where people are coming from, usually. as in i try to understand why they do the things they do. but. when it comes to my country's politicians. i just can't seem to figure out how a person can disregard human life so much. like man it's one thing when you look at monarchs centuries ago who literally did not understand that other people are just like them bc they were born to think so, but these politicians supposedly all started as normal people, yet it feels like they don't see anyone but themselves, and that's just insane to me. like i have met selfish or self centered people in my life but never at this level. i can't comprehend this. they are literally like evil cartoon villains it's actually insane

it’s not that you can’t understand it’s that you won’t because what its saying is a challenge to you, or that your context overwhelms you.

the best low stakes example is the post that was like “you guys put a lot of effort into fandom that is just absolute dog shit,” and everyone reblogged it as if it was saying fandom’s efforts reproduced good results.

however i would like to return to the scope of the extremely not politically important but that which is dear to my heart: starship troopers a satire that was read wrong because the 90s were a deeply deeply conservative time of loving the us military.

in the wake of helldivers 2, people have been like. gently wrong or confused, when they revisited it and i just want to say my little bit.

the gender and racial unity presented in the film are demonstrating the perfect unity within to defeat the threats without and this is highlighted vs the dissenters depicted in the film who are summarily executed.

it is also another dazzling kind of propaganda. that kind of imaginary integrated society is, by virtue of fascism being fascism, impossible.

and as a side note this works the other way as well, i’ve had two people influenced by the context of the film tell me the book was good. baby, no it was fucking not.

also revisiting what counts as looking at the audience and saying “this is bad and i do not agree with it,” because that’s demonstrably not enough 💖
