Hello! Firstly I wanted to say how much of a fan I am of your blog! I'm someone whose very interested in the Moomins, and especially Tove's work! I enjoy and cherish any and all adaptations, but Tove's version of the Moomins will always be dear to me.
I have to ask, because you seen very knowledgeable about Tove, but is there any instances of Tove talking about the characters? Like, who the characters are, according to her?
I really like hearing about the author's own opinions about their characters, so I'm really curious about what Tove thought of the Moomin characters.
I'm looking for insight on specifically Snufkin, but I am also welcome to other characters! It's actually been pretty hard to find Tove's own opinions of the characters. I can find a lot of information on what other people say Tove thought, but not much from Tove herself.
You're in luck because very recently a new edition of The Moomins and the Great Flood was published that includes newly-unearthed notes from Tove herself on the characters! I posted a few extracts on here, including Snufkin's section.
There's also been numerous interviews with Tove where she discusses the characters; there's this one on youtube, and a bunch on yle, which I collated a list of here.
In terms of Snufkin specifically, here's her talking about the inspirations for him (and link to my translation of the entire book if you're interested. she also mentions the snufkin-atos link in an interview that's quoted in the mumintrollet och jordens undergång publication), and here's an interesting later interview where she's a little more critical of Snufkin's character.
I feel like there's TONS of times she's discussed her characters that makes it hard to give a definite list of those moments lol, I guess I'd recommend just reading her biographies and interviews etc. and you'll end up coming across them.
