np! i think there's this like....feelings of playing w/ dolls, where like, you're handed these characters and it's feels like play, and esp play that can done w/ other ppl. one the things abt fandom is that the hardest steps, investment and base content/framework, are already built in so it's a lot easier to hook ppl into whatever your ideas are.

like, an analogy i'd use is the difference between using boxed mix to make a cake and making a cake from scratch (making ocs and your own original content, even if it's the same tropes as an au or whatever).

so I kind of get why but ultimately, that's why I'm generally not an au person (though I've read some I do like), there's too much distance often from what's appealing in the first place and values that only make sense in the original narrative/canon.

that's also why I think fanart is a lot better for the more distanced aus/thought experiments as you put them. fic, even when plotless and short, requires a diff level of engagement vs. someone drawing what are mostly outfit swaps and character design takes.

In Name Only? Like everything about the characters changed and the things that remained from the original were pretty much just the name of the characters so I was like ok what the fuck is the point of this these aren’t the characters I like and I don’t like these new ones either

As you say I think visually can be interesting because it’s a nice design exercise and I feel it has the benefit of leaving things up to the imagination of the viewer which feels like a big advantage to me over fanfic and I think that’s part of why I interact more with visual stuff than fanfic.

Olds Rocket Powered 1932 Ford Roadster Built by College Kid in Storage Unit

Let’s get the issue of the man’s name out of the way first. As best as he knows, Austin Grabowski is no relation to the T-bucket–building, Ivo-racing, sometimes actor and all-around-character Norm Grabowski. Norm did once “adopt” Pat Grabowski, Austin’s dad, at a car show. As Austin tells the story, Norm spotted Pat wearing a shirt bearing the Grabowski name, wrapped an arm around his shoulders, and became family just long enough for Pat to buy him a beer or two.

Some of Austin’s earliest memories are of riding around with his dad in his dad’s Deuce three-window, a car he’s had since he was a teenager. When Austin was in his late teens, Pat undertook a major revamp of the car, tearing it down and rebuilding it as a fenderless hot rod. Tinkering with the Dodge Red Ram-powered Ford is “his stress relief for the day,” says Austin

We didn’t have to go far to find a great location for this photo shoot. Grabowski Speed Shop provided all the atmosphere we needed. Austin Grabowski is a member of the Kingsmen car club; the cars in the background belong to fellow members.

Austin has been “into speed” since he was about 6, he says, and he still has the tiny quarter-midget race car he drove back then. It is stored on a pallet rack in the spacious shop he shares with his dad, on a large plot of rural Southern California land that’s been in the family for decades.

(Quick trivia detour: This shop is where Forrest Lucas, at the time a tenant of Pat Grabowski’s, started formulating the blends that laid the foundation for what is now Lucas Oil Products Inc.)

Austin’s love of fast cars, and the inspiration of his dad’s Deuce, set him on his life’s path. He attended McPherson College in central Kansas, which offers a four-year degree in automotive restoration. Austin chose to get a business degree with a minor in auto restoration, to “have something to fall back on.” Knowing how to run a business comes in handy with the operation of Grabowski Speed Shop, which Austin opened about 2 1/2 years ago.

Austin made the frame table he used to build the roadster’s chassis. The framerails are 1932 issue, fitted with a Model A front crossmember, a Ford X-member, and a ’32 rear crossmember. There’s a half-stack of springs on the ’32 front axle and a similar setup on the ’36 rearend. Front shocks are ’36 Buick (“Delco Lovejoy” is visible just behind the arm), while the juice brakes from a ’40 Ford.

The seeds for the Speed Shop, where Austin turns out “only American hot rods and era-correct customs,” were planted with this roadster, something of an extracurricular activity while he was at McPherson. “I built it in Kansas, but it has a lot of Southern California attitude. I wanted it to look like a guy in high school built it in 1957. Other than the Brookville body, there’s nothing on it newer than 1957.”

He had hoped to use a gennie Ford body, “but when I looked at original bodies, the best one I could find was $15,000, and all the metal from the beltline down needed to be replaced.” So he did the next best thing: He mounted the body to a real ’32 frame and added ’32 parts to the reproduction body—the firewall, grille shell, gas tank, headlights, spreader bar, and more. Several of those parts were graciously donated by his dad, who had at one time run them on his coupe.

Split wishbones and steering are stock ’32 items, as are the steering column and drop.

It took Austin a little over a year to chase down all the parts and assemble the car, all while taking a full course load at school. He did everything himself: machining, bodywork, paint, even the upholstery. Most of the work was done in a storage unit.

Originally he was going to put a Cadillac flathead in the car, but that plan changed when he took the engine to a machine shop and found the block was cracked around the lifters and oil gallery. There was a silver lining. Austin befriended the shop’s owner, Jerry Phillips, and wound up with a job there.

Austin built his Rocket V8 when he worked at Phillips Motor Sports in Galva, Kansas, with the help of his then-boss, Jerry Phillips. He bored the block 0.060 over and decked it 0.030 over, and also decked the No. 8 Olds heads 0.030 over. The heads breathe better thanks to small-block-Chevy Vortec valves actuated by Pontiac pushrods and a vintage Chet Herbert 3/4-race cam.

Plan B was the Olds Rocket engine, which he got in a trade for a set of small-block headers. Seriously. “The guy had two Olds motors, wanted to get rid of them, and needed a set of headers,” Austin says of his score. When Pat found out Austin had a Rocket V8, he told him, “You gotta call Grandpa Herbie.”

Funny story: Grandpa Herbie isn’t Austin’s grandpa—he’s an uncle by marriage. And his name isn’t Herbie. It’s Bud Reese, who raced the Porter-Reese Olds-powered slingshot in the early days of organized drag racing. Grandpa Herbie happened to have a Chet Herbert 3/4-race cam sitting on a shelf, and that cam went into Austin’s Rocket. (When asked about the cam’s specs, all Austin would say was, “Top secret.”)

Other than the repro body, the newest pieces on Austin’s Deuce are these valve covers, which date from 1957. “I needed them for the knuckles to clear the Isky adjustable rockers.”

Being a mostly broke college kid, Austin worked hard to find deals for his project car. He paid “$400 for the entire ’32 front end, spindle to spindle, plus wishbones.” The repop Firestone tires came from a Cyber Monday sale at Lucas Tire. The Lincoln Zephyr steering wheel was found “at a boneyard of parts at school.”

Austin was just 21 when he finished the roadster, and it became his daily driver as he completed school. “I even drove it in the snow—twice—after a surprise storm. That sucked.” It came home with him to California, and he’s still driving it. He figures he’s put some 30,000 miles on it in the last eight years. He hasn’t collected any timeslips, but he says he got it “to over 140 chasing a buddy in a ’54 Ford with a built Y-block in it.

“It’s a nasty little roadster.”

Stock cast iron exhaust manifolds are hooked to 1 3/4-inch straight pipes, giving the Rocket a distinctive sound. The mellow burble at idle gets snarlier as the revs go up.

A 1939 Ford gearbox peeks out from the floorboards. It has survived just fine behind the torquey Rocket. Austin can’t say the same for his ’32 rearend, which blew up several times. He replaced it with a stouter diff from a ’36 Ford. Note the vintage Offy gas pedal.

We’re sure this Ward heater came in handy during cold Kansas winters and was worth every penny of the $30 Austin paid for it at the Wichita swap meet.

Originally Austin painted the roadster black. “But I hated it,” he admits. “It was a pain to clean and take care of.” The car’s maroon color isn’t a specific factory shade, but one he picked out of a paint book. “I just wanted to have the look of a 1940s/1950s color.” He repainted the car during one of his winter breaks from school.

Take Five with Cory Coauette of Lunch Money Garage

Cory Caouette is a SoCal native and Huntington Beach local who suffered a severe injury eleven years ago that would put many people out of commission or deflate them to the point of depression. Cory however, didn’t give up. He’s the owner and builder of a 1927 Dodge pickup truck that is as true to hot rodding as possible, and also runs Lunchmoney Garage in Huntington Beach, California. We had a chance to catch up with him and get some insight into what happened to him years ago and how we was able to maintain interest in building and racing cars.

How did you end up in a wheelchair?

In 2007, I was right here by Main Street, (in Huntington Beach) at a friend’s condo, on the fourth story, leaning over a balcony on my cell phone. I was talking to my buddy who was on his way there, and then I woke up in ICU. It was the most freak accident that could happen. I immediately knew that I was paralyzed. I broke all of my ribs, my collar bone, shoulder blade, my back, and collapsed my lungs.

I never had to deal with the emotions that affect a lot of people after an accident, I was just motivated. This was odd because before the accident, that was not me because I was always a negative person. To have such a positive attitude was a shock even to me.

Once I knew there was a checklist of things I needed to do to get me out of the hospital, I was game. I was like, I can knock most of these off today if you want! I was really motivated to get the hell out of there.

What is your truck?

It’s a 1927 Dodge three-window coupe. Initially I thought I would build a Volkswagen Bus, with barn doors, make a ramp that came down, and have a captain’s chair that would swivel. I’d put a Subaru motor in it, automatic transmission. After I got out of the hospital though, I had zero money. I had bought a chassis from my buddy Ari, to build something, and my other friend Jake knew someone that had a cab which ended up being the Dodge. I had to have it because the door was so big I could easily get in and out. It also had a 1935 bed to go with it. I threw the guy a couple hundred bucks and said, “I’ll be back in a couple of days with a trailer.”

I built the truck in nine months in my garage. A good buddy that I worked in a dealership with out of high school sold me an iron-block, Vortec 350 for 200 bucks. Craigslist was great at the time I was building this thing. I’d go to swap meets and meet people and end up digging through their stuff at home, and slowly pieced everything together. It was done in a two-car garage with a welder, grinder, and a tool box. I don’t have anything fancy. Originally the whole build cost about $6500.

How did you come up with “Lunch Money”?

I’m not sure what triggered the idea for the name but it basically came from being in junior high school, literally not eating lunch and saving your money so you could go buy new skateboard wheels or whatever. This is the adult version of that for sure, and my buddy Josh who’s been a tattoo artists for years painted it on the door.

What’s the next version of the truck for you?

I’ve always wanted to make it an all-around vehicle. I want to drift it, road-race it, and drag race it. I love off-road-style fabrication, so a coilover-type front end. I’m already really happy with the rear. It’s a ladder-bar set up and I bought some coilovers temporarily and then four-linked it and threw in a Speedway Engineering sway bar. A twin turbo LS3 is for sure the next step for the motor.

Did you have to figure out the hand controls yourself or was there a kit out there that you could use?

I’m a fabricator with no budget. I pieced together a lot of bolts, and Heim-joints, and master cylinders. I also don’t have my legs or abdominal muscles to brace myself and pull back on the brakes lever, so I wanted to push, so when I’m stopping, it helps apply the pressure. That’s why I did push for brake, squeeze for gas, and keep it really simple. I always wanted a Powerglide transmission because I used to watch Past Time and all of the fast cars had ‘Glides. I spent a couple hundred bucks on it with a trans-brake already on it. It has a 9-inch rear end in it too. I put a used set of 4:11s in it and welded the diff and it lasted for two years. I ended up putting some Currie axles, new bearings, and a spool in it later on.

Tom Derych’s Blown Hemi Charger Is The Mopar Muscle Car He Always Wanted

Beginning in the mid-1970s Tom Derych tore around town, and was a regular at New York National Speedway, in a 440 powered 1974 Dart Sport. “The car was fast and a lot of fun, but to me it was never a true muscle car,” he explains. “I really wanted something earlier, from 1969 or ’70.” Derych was always on the lookout for the right car, but as time marched on it became increasingly difficult to find something really nice.

Then one day in the summer of 1989 he came across a stunning, Sublime Green 1970 Charger at a show. It was born as a Charger 500 with a 383, Torqueflite, and air conditioning, and the original owner babied the car for the first 9 years of its life. The second owner swapped out the factory 383 for a 671-blown 440 that looked cool but never ran well, which was something of a blessing because the car wasn’t driven much, thus helping to preserve its excellent condition. Then the starter died and the car sat in the garage for a full year before Derych was able to buy it. He replaced the starter, got the Charger running again, and enjoyed it as is for a little while. It was way more fun than the Dart, but something was still missing.

“The car was beautiful, and the 440 was nice, but it wasn’t a Hemi, which is what I always wanted.” Derych spread the word far and wide that he was in the market for a 426 Hemi and before long a friend turned him on to a one advertised for sale in National Dragster. The seller just happened to be Carl Olsen, vice president of the IHRA and the blown 426 had an interesting back story. The block and heads were high nickel castings from 1966 and it was built by Keith Black for a well known drag boat. After the boat was damaged in a crash the engine went back to Black for freshening but the customer never retrieved it and it ended up in blower legend Mike Kuhl’s shop, where it sat quietly for 25 years.

Derych bought the engine, still in marine trim and fitted with a Carter AFB, Vertex magneto, and a 671 blower, and arranged to ship it from California to New York. After arrival, he disassembled the engine and brought it to Merkel Racing Engines for comprehensive machine work and cleaning. After Jack Merkel worked his magic Derych, who is a professional transmission rebuilder, assembled the engine himself. He began with a 4.25” stroke Kellogg crankshaft, which combined with a 4.25” bore produces a 472 cid engine. JE forged pistons wearing plasma moly rings anchor to the stroker crank with forged Carrillo rods and deliver 7.5:1 compression.

The engine’s matching 1966 iron Hemi heads were freshened with new 2.25” intake and 1.94” exhaust valves, stock Chrysler rocker arms, COMP Cams valve springs and solid lifters, and titanium retainers. A Cloyes double roller steel chain spins an UltraDyne cam that delivers .550”/.547” lift and 247/255-degrees duration @ 0.050”. To help insure longevity a Ray Barton oil pump was combined with a Milodon dual-swing external pickup 10-quart pan, and a stock Mopar high performance water pump sends coolant through a Griffin aluminum radiator.

When it came to the big engine’s induction setup Derych considered sticking with the 671 blower that came on it, but decided that if he was going to be a bear, he might as well be a grizzly. That meant going with twin Holley 4781 double pumpers reworked to deliver 950 cfm, a Cragar intake manifold, and a 15% overdriven 871 BDS blower that produces 13-pounds of boost. For fuel delivery, Derych relies on a Mallory 250 Series pump, MagnaFuel regulator, and Mallory Comp 500 Series filter.

For spark, Derych went with old reliable, an MSD Pro-Billet distributor, MSD 6AL box, MSD 8.5mm wires, and Champion plugs. To expel spent gases, he installed 2-1/8” TTI long-tube, ceramic coated headers, Borla mufflers, and 3.5” stainless steel pipes. The exhaust is finished with 4” chrome plated tips that he fabricated by hand.

For the transmission, Derych stuck with the car’s original 727 Torqueflite, but drew on his 40+ years of transmission experience to strengthen it sufficiently so it could withstand the modified Hemi’s output. To that end, he went with a Turbo Action full manual shift Cheetah reverse pattern valve body, bolt-in rear sprag rollerized with Torrington bearings, Hemi Direct drum and band, and 5.0 ratio lever for extra holding power. ProTorque was tapped for a 2400 rpm stall speed, 11” torque converter and Earl’s Performance was called upon for a transmission fluid cooler plumbed to an aluminum cast, deep pan.

The driveline was completed with a factory Dana 60 rear end featuring 4.10:1 gears and Dana 35 spline axles that measure 52.5” from flange-to-flange. The diff is spun through a 3.5” diameter driveshaft from The Driveshaft Shop. Weld Racing aluminum Draglite wheels sized at 15”x6.5” up front and 15”x12” at the rear wear Mickey Thompson Sportsman Pro tires measuring 28×7.50-15LT and 29×15.50-15LT respectively.

In keeping with the old school theme he wanted, Derych chose to leave the suspension largely stock. The front end was rebuilt with a Moog kit and fitted with Competition Engineering 3-way adjustable shocks and Mopar subframe connectors. Super Stock Mopar springs and Competition Engineering 50/50 shocks suspend the rear. Mopar subframe connectors and an adjustable pinion snubber were fitted at the rear, and the springs were moved into the frame rails at the same time that the factory rear wheel housings were widened 3” inboard. The stock brake system was retained, but completely rebuilt with Bendix parts. Discs up front measure 11” in diameter while the rear drums are sized at 10.5”x2.5”.

Because of the car’s constant indoor storage and easy life, it had a super sweet body when Derych bought it, making a high quality respray relatively easy. He stuck with the original hue and used DuPont Centari acrylic enamel, with the only body mods being the addition of R/T badging and door scoops, the hole in the hood to accommodate the blower, and a custom elephant-themed Hemi logo designed by friend Gene Schulmann and incorporated into the rear bumble bee stripes.

Inside, this Charger is like a trip back in time, with the only deviations from stock being the addition of Auto Meter Sport Comp gauges atop the steering column and on the center console to complement the factory instruments. Derych installed new, correct reproduction seat covers and carpeting from Legendary Auto Interiors, but the remainder of the cockpit is original and remains in impressively good condition.

Since completing the build in 1992 Derych has added about 25,000 miles to the clock, and he’s loved every minute of it. “This Charger is the car I always wanted,” he explains, “and I enjoyed all aspects of the build and even after all these years, it’s still a thrill to drive. All of the vehicles I own are Mopars, including a pro-street Demon and a ’68 Barracuda S I’m working on now, and my wife Debbie’s 440+6, 4-speed GTX. Even our daily drivers are Mopars. They’re fantastic cars with such storied histories, especially the classic muscle cars, and Debbie and I love the cars and all the friendships they’ve helped create.”

The 9-inch Ford Rearend is the Strongest Rearend Out There—It’s All Due to “Hypoid Distance”

This third-member cutaway illustrates the 9-inch Ford rearend’s beefy internals and unique design features that make it and its aftermarket descendents the world’s most popular and widely used hot rod and racing rearend.

1] The 9-inch Ford has no differential case gear-ratio range restrictions; one differential accepts all gear ratios from the 2s through the 6s.

2] There are more gear ratios available for the 9-inch Ford than any other rearend out there. Particularly in the 3.0:1 to 5.0:1 range, there’s usually a gearset for at least every tenth of a ratio change, making it easy to tune for a particular track. “You will not find another rearend with more gear-ratio options in both the street/strip and drag-race Pro gear category,” maintains Quick Performance’s Brydon Papenberg.

3] A drop-out third member makes it easy to change gear ratios at the track as needed. You can have extra centers already setup and ready for installation (see Photos A and B, below).

4] A larger offset (hypoid distance) between ring-gear and pinion-gear centerlines is the key reason the Ford is inherently stronger—but also why it’s slightly less efficient.

5] A beefy bolt-in pinion support rigidly contains large, tapered roller bearings to support the pinion (see Photo C, below).

6] A third “extra” pilot bearing supports the back-end of the pinion to limit gear deflection under high torque loads. Opinions differ as whether this is really a design enhancement or a crutch (see Photo C, below, and section “Rear Pinion Bearing: Strength Enhancer or Band-Aid?”, below).

7] The 9-inch Ford’s adjuster nuts make setting ring-gear backlash easy: loosen one side and tighten the opposite side to move the gear back and forth. Most others use cumbersome, replaceable shims.

A] The Ford’s bolt-in third member (circle) that holds the gears and diff combine with bolt-in axles to allow gear changes at the track in as little as 40 minutes. The axletubes and centersection are steel, making it easy to simply weld-on different brackets to match any rear suspension, as shown by one of many ready-to-bolt-in Moser Engineering 9-inch Ford assemblies.

B] As seen at Currie, you can pull the axles and then slide the entire third member, including the differential case and ring-and-pinion, right out of the housing.

C] The bolt-in pinion support “capsule” contains two beefy tapered bearings plus a small extra bearing (arrow) at the rear. Some claim this helps securely cradle the drive pinion, supporting it end to end for less deflection.

Ford’s 9-inch rearend was produced from 1957 through 1986. At one time or another, it was installed in nearly every Ford passenger car and truck. In racing and hot rodding today, you’ll find these rearends and their aftermarket descendents in just about everything—not just Fords.

But what makes the Ford “better”? Besides an inherently large ring-gear diameter (bigger than all competitive passenger-car performance rearends, except the massively heavy and relatively rare 9¾-inch Dana 60), the Ford’s biggest strength advantage over competitive rearends is its greater hypoid distance. Hypoid distance is the distance from the center of the ring gear to the center of the pinion gear. Given approximately equal ring-and-pinion diameters, the greater this distance (or gear offset), the higher the ring-and-pinion assembly’s inherent strength. That’s because offsetting the gears results in more gear-tooth surface contact at any given moment. The advantage increases at lower (high numerical) axle ratios because, compared to milder ratios, the low-ratio gearsets have relatively fewer pinion gear teeth in contact—meaning less teeth to spread and absorb the load.

Ironically, what became one of the Ford’s main strength advantages was not due to the design engineers’ desire to increase rearend strength. Back in 1957, Ford’s most powerful supercharged 312ci Thunderbird V8 put out 300 hp, with mainstream motors generally in the 200hp class at most. Instead, the large offset was a nod to appease the stylists who wanted a lower floorpan with less “center-hump” for the new Ford passenger-car body.

As it turns out, in the performance world, the Ford’s ‘old-school’ drop-out centersection is yet another design advantage. “It’s one of the easier rearends to work with,” Papenberg says. “The drop-out design allows for not only ease of swapping different ratios and carriers in-and-out, but it also makes it easy to rebuild and service, as you can place it on a bench directly in front of you, versus working ‘inside’ of a complete rearend.”

Taken as a whole, the Ford’s beefy ring-and-pinion configuration, strong bearings, stout bolt-in axles, ease of set up, and future growth potential only added to the Ford’s increased popularity in the hot rod world. Today, aftermarket renditions from Currie, Mark Williams, Moser, Hoosier Gear, Quick Performance, Strange, Tom’s Differentials, and others have vastly improved the basic overall soundness of Ford’s original design, making it the go-to choice in racing and hot rodding alike. Sums up Papenberg, “New and improved parts are continuously being released for the 9-inch, and its popularity will continue to grow as a result.”

This “parts-book-style” exploded view of a Ford 9-inch third member illustrates all of its major parts. Of particular interest—in terms of the design’s unique attributes—are the drop-out third-member housing (3), bolt-in pinion support (4), and extra pinion shaft support bearing (11).

Hypoid Distance: Advantage Ford

We know from long experience that a fully built 9-inch Ford is better and stronger than a Dana 60.” — Mark Williams, Mark Williams Enterprises.

With its 2.250-inch offset, the 9-inch Ford’s hypoid distance is greater than popular competitors, most of which are at 1.5 inches or even less. “The [Ford’s] hypoid angle gives it a huge advantage in the strength side of things,” explains Quick Performance’s Brydon Papenberg. According to Hoosier Gear’s Bill Vandevord, the Ford may have as much as a 10-percent strength advantage in certain cases, assuming equally sized gears. The strength advantage would be greatest as gears get steeper (higher numerically), because there are generally less teeth on the pinion to absorb and spread the torque loads. Over-5:1 ratios may have only five or six teeth. With a 1.5-inch hypoid distance, that comes out to just 1.3 to 1.4 teeth in contact at any one moment on a Chevy 12-bolt versus 1.7 to 1.8 for the Ford’s 2.250-inch offset.

But increased hypoid distance isn’t a free lunch: Theoretically, it reduces efficiency because with a lower contact point, the pinion must push harder against the ring gear. And there’s also more surface area in contact, which generates higher surface friction. “Greater offset increases the contact ratio and produces more sliding angle, reducing efficiency,” Vandevord says. “A 9-inch Ford is only about 93- to 94-percent efficient compared to a theoretical ‘on-center’ configuration.” Years ago, our sister publication Car Craft used a chassis dyno to perform a real-world evaluation, logging the power to the tires on a Chevy 12-bolt versus a Ford 9-inch. The Ford lost about 2.6 percent on average from a performance engine that made a peak of 326 rwhp at 5,800 rpm.

Nevertheless, most racers are more than willing to trade off such slight drivetrain losses for real-world strength. “The ‘inefficient’ complaint with the 9-inch Ford rearend is really not that big of a deal, and would probably not be noticed in 95 percent of the applications out there,” sums up Quick’s Papenberg. “Newer, lighter, and more efficient parts are becoming available, so any so-called gap is getting smaller. I would go as far as saying if you took the same car with the same exact setup, and put them side-by-side with the same driver in multiple circumstances, that driver would not be able to tell which rearend is in the vehicle.”

With its huge 9¾-inch ring gear, a beefy Dana 60 should be stronger than a 9-inch Ford. But as these Hoosier Gear photos show, the Dana 60 (left) has only a 1.062-inch hypoid offset, compared to the Ford’s larger 2.250-inch (right). Less gear offset means that, compared to Ford, the Dana has less strength-enhancing tooth contact, but slightly greater theoretical efficiency.

If a 9-inch ring-gear diameter isn’t enough, there are 9.5- and even 10-inch gearsets available. The 10-inch gears usually require a special aftermarket third member, but Hoosier Gear offers 10-inch gears that fit in “normal” 9-inch housings (clearancing may be needed). Compare a “standard” Hoosier 9310-alloy 4.57:1 gearset (left) versus the 10-inch version (right).

When a rearend gets really popular—like the 9-inch Ford—it spurs development of even better parts, which feeds on itself and creates even more popularity. Available from Quick Performance, this scallop-cut ring-and-pinion gearset is (depending on the specific ratio) four-plus pounds lighter than standard-weight gearset. The 8620 heat-treated alloy-steel gears are said to be suitable for street, drag racing, circle track, and off-road use.

Rear Pinion Bearing: Strength Enhancer or Band-Aid?

Ford 9-inch rearends have a third “extra” pinion support bearing located at the rear of the drive pinion. Other rearends have only the usual center two support bearings. The traditional view on the Ford’s extra bearing is that it’s a brilliant design enhancement that places the pinion in double-shear to prevent pinion deflection. But some consider it to be an add-on Band-Aid fix: To allow pulling all the internal guts from the front, the two main large bearings up front are closer together than they ideally should be to support the beefy drive pinion and prevent a teeter-totter-like wobble. Even in production, Ford realized the rear bearing was really too small, and increased its size slightly in the “Daytona” nodular-iron third member. The bearing’s size has become even larger in custom aftermarket racing third members.

As power levels increased, Ford realized that even the “third” pinion shaft support bearing was inadequate. In the early 1960s, it introduced the “Daytona” pinion bearing retainer, which accepted a slightly larger bearing. It’s still available from Ford Performance under PN M-4614-B. Even larger bearings and 35-spline pinions are available through aftermarket sources.

Shades of Gray

The 9-inch Ford is a great rearend—when properly built using modern aftermarket parts. Unfortunately, very few factory 9-inch Ford installations had all the good stuff, making scoring a bulletproof version in the salvage yard highly unlikely. For example, most versions have a gray-iron third member, not the desirable nodular-iron case. “They’re good only to 400hp max,” says Tom at Tom’s Differentials. “Anything above that should use today’s beefed-up, redesigned, nodular-iron aftermarket cases. They’re good to 800 hp, if built properly. The next step beyond that would be the high end, completely redesigned, Mark Williams billet-aluminum housing.

“It’s the same deal with common production 28-spline axles. I never use them if building from scratch. You need at least 31-spline axles on any decent street car, but today on scratch builds, I go straight to 35-spline axles.” And, yes, there are up to 40-spline axles available. Then there are larger diameter ring-and-pinons made from 9310 high-alloy steel; depending on the specific design, they may or may not require a redesigned and clearanced aftermarket third member.

The 9-inch Ford’s overall design lends itself to easy adaptation to all sorts of nonstock applications. Aftermarket rearend specialists like Currie have hundreds of housings on standby just waiting to find a home in your hot rod or race car.

Many high-end racers and professional rearend builders favor Mark Williams’ totally revamped cast-aluminum, heavy-duty, third-member case (shown). Says one authority, “I’ve never broke a Williams housing in 15 years. They usually last 100 runs in a Pro Mod car.” Strange also offers a quality billet-aluminum housing.

The supply of junkyard 9-inch rearends is drying up. Nowadays, the majority of performance 9-inch Fords are built up from entirely new parts—even the tubes and banjo are fabricated from scratch, as on this high-end Currie Enterprises assembly.

A wide variety of limited-slip differentials have been offered for the 9-inch. This is a typical Traction-Lok differential parts view. Completely field rebuildable, this limited-slip design uses clutches, somewhat similar to a Chevrolet Eaton-type Positraction setup.

Rebuildable Trac-Lok limited-slip differentials are still available directly from Ford Performance Parts (28-spline, PN M-4204-F28A; 31-spline, PN M-4204-F31A, shown).

Strange was the OE supplier to Ford for the 9-inch rearends used in 2010 factory Cobra Jet Mustangs. The same basic assembly will bolt into 2005–2014 Mustangs. An endless variety of options are available from Strange.

You might be fooled by the cover, but this is a bolt-in Currie 9-inch Ford Crate rearend in an early Chevelle. The optional inspection cover makes the beefy 9-inch Ford look almost like a stock installation.
