One of my coworkers is ex air force, and he says that some of the most highly educated people in the military are the people in the bands, for whatever that's worth. He also says that the air force has the easiest physical requirements, again, for whatever it's worth.

yeah i've looked into it. every semester in orchestra/band at some point we get a military musician in to give a lecture about it and try to recruit new players. plus i play with (or have in the past) multiple musicians from various military bands. they're fantastic players and really smart, and honestly some of the nicest people i've worked with. but they're honest about the Military Experience(tm) and i don't think it would work out for me.

i'd be lying if i said i wasn't tempted, but i also know that i wouldn't qualify if i went ahead and tried it. even the air force's physical requirements would disqualify me; if you're auditioning as a musician, you still have to meet the same physical requirements as anyone enlisting normally, and i definitely do not. and if i don't even make the air force's requirements i definitely won't make any of the other branches so

#on a whim i actually just looked up the air force concert band and they're actually auditioning for a new oboe/english horn. lol #but the application was due a month ago and i don't have the rep prepared anyway #sasha answers #i wanna talk about me #the-importance-of-being-wilde #i sit next to a flute in orchestra who's ex military #(idk what band. something in army i think. possibly also the fife & drum corps)#he's an incredible musician (won our concerto comp this year) he's the nicest guy so fun to play with #but he was military for like eight or ten years and decided to quit cause he said the social culture was. not very good #well i don't have all the details and even if i did it's not my gossip to spread #but based on that and what i've heard from a few other people i don't know if it's the environment for me #of course. again. even if i could hope to get in in the first place. which i cannot due to health reasons
