Monthly Media: May 2017
I’m running late on this one thanks to GRADUATION BABY. This also means my media consumption has been less than average, which I am openly proud of myself for. But lezgo.
(Also, realising that I am an illustrator, I thought why have I not illustrated these blog posts? So gonna try do that from now on. Cool.)
MOVIES
Again, shout out to the most underrated app ever: Letterboxd. (You should sponsor me for these blog posts Letterboxd)
2017 - Louis CK (2017)
This is my first experience of Louis CK’s standup, and instantly I could see why he is seen as one of the kings of the craft. He is so practiced at it, and his routine just played to his strengths.  Took me a while to warm to it, with minimal laughs in the first half hour, but his observations are so good and fresh. The unfolding willy joke made me choke on my lunch. Loved his use of voices and sound effects and movement to create this almost theatrical atmosphere with just himself.
Verdict: ★★★½

Role Models (2008) - rewatch
I took a risk. I rewatched a film that was remembered as a comedy classic from my youther youth. The bits that are funny are super funny, but the padding around the funny bits are pretty darn crap. Like just badly made and crap writing. I probably liked Sean William Scott's character when I was younger cause of boobs and sex and fun willy jokes (which I obviously 100% am too mature to partake in now). Willy jokes were still good but the Stifler character he always plays is pretttttyyyy laaaaaame. Paul Rudd was good but he's better when he's being likeable instead of dislikeable. Jane Lynch crushes it though. Maybe my favourite performance of hers.
Verdict: ★★½

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006) - rewatch
Rarely do I rewatch fav comedies from my teenage years and they live up to the memory, but I did it THRICE this month. Maybe I didn’t have room in the cranium for a new film experience due to final year woes. However, Borat is one of the best mockumentaries I've seen, just riding that perfect line of shock vs. actually funny jokes and writing. Loved the second watch. Hilarious watching it in the social context of 2017 vs. when it came out. The least P.C. film ever.
Verdict: ★★★★

Superbad (2007) - rewatch
This movie stands the test of time. Cut from a different cloth from the other US comedies of my youth. The style is on point. The music is great. And the jokes are unapologetic and sharp. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Verdict: ★★★★

GAMES
Battlefield 1 (2016)
Not yet completed the campaign, but holy smokes this game is great. Made me enjoy online multiplayer again, because running around is fun even without doing well. Flying planes is even fun even though I crash within 30 seconds every time. Cavalry swords are SUPERBLY fun.
Verdict: ★★★★

TV
Master of None: Season 2 (2017)
Aziz’ returns with the uber-modern and s’relatable and s’progressive series that is charming and nice to watch. My only downside would be his acting (just not very good sorry Aziz although still very likeable) and maybe how hard it is trying to be relatable and as modern as possible. Upsides though are definitely the cinematography and music and Arnold and the ambiguous heart-wrenching ending. Also the ‘I Love New York’ episode was award-winning short-film worthy.
Verdict: ★★★½

READING
Pass.
PODCASTS
Creative Pep Talk
I’ve been listening to @andy-j-miller’s wisdom-filled podcast for almost a year, and listened to every episode that has been made. It’s been great to see and hear him progress as an interviewer and a monologuist and just all round inspiring guy. His most recent episodes have been big powerful chunks of inspo so check them out and then get stuck in to the oldies.

Alrighty! Not a great month for media, but there are times for media, and times for actually doing work. Sorry to get all ecclesiastical on your collective bumbums, bu’strue.
All suggestions for media consumption are much appreciated.
