An Imagine for AU night!
The Gang x Reader
Dally x Reader
BE WARNED: This is probably super long and shitty lol + I tend not to proofread so there may be errors.
Dally is lowkey a sweetheart he’s not a cheating asshole in this either.
Secret AU under the keep reading line (Unless you’re on mobile lol) and I may or may not have used a name from Assassin’s Creed
Tulsa, Oklahoma. That was your home for the next few weeks. Papers were scattered on your desk from the opened file. Your next victim, Bob Sheldon. There were reports on top of reports about him mistreating the greasers. Normally your boss would let little things like that go, but not this time. All you could do was think to yourself, “What the hell did he do to piss off the boss this much?” You sipped some of your coffee before tidying up and going over to your stash of guns. You had snipers, knives, grenades, handguns, basically the works. You weren’t one to toot your own horn but you were highly respected in the assassins industry. Your look of innocence is what brought the targets in and your wit made them stay around before you took them out. Sherri Valance was Bob’s girlfriend and she was gorgeous. After a couple of moments you had the final plan in your mind. You’d dress up as a soc and do your makeup to resemble Cherry’s but made sure to add some flare. You wanted to grab Bob’s attention, he had to want to be involved with you. The mission began in a few days and you needed all the sleep that you could get.
You moved to Tulsa on a Sunday and it was now Friday morning. It was only 8 and you had already friended a group of greasers. They varied in ages but they were all fine as fuck. “You do realize that it’s not safe for a soc, such as yourself, to be seen with greasers, right?” Ponyboy questioned as he raised a brow. You nodded and told him, “I don’t have a rich mommy and daddy who tell me what to do. I can handle myself and I can certainly fight off some bad guys if you need me to.” You threw a wink his way as you laughed to yourself.
“I like your moxie, Shortcake.” Dally threw his arm around you before giving you a noogie. You grabbed his wrist before twisting his arm behind his back, “I suggest you don’t do that if you want to keep this arm.? You released your grip and matched your pace to Darry’s. “What’s your story?” You hit your shoulders together and he gave you a hesitant look that made you feel the slightest uneasy. “I take care of my brothers,” he gestured towards Soda and Pony before continuing, “and we all pitch in to pay rent.” They all pitch in to pay rent? From what you’ve learned, Pony only went to school so he had no income. Darry said all of them though, not just him and Soda. You shook the idea out of your head and asked, “What do you guys do for work?” Two-Bit and Steve shared a glance before saying, “We’re in a fight club” in unison. These boys were suspicious but you chose to ignore it for now, focusing on the mission. You were going to let them lead you to Bob because as Johnny put it, “His parents let him run wild so he’ll probably be around sometime soon.” Johnny’s little drawl filled your ears as Dally kept stealing glances at you as if he was trying to piece something together. “What did you say your name was again?” You had to make a one up on the fly and let me say, it was NOT your best. “My name is Altair Melrose, like the color.” Rule #1 of being an assassin, never reveal your true identity. Your real name was (Y/N) and you were (Y/A) years old. Your parents were killed in the because they weren’t very careful. The only reason you survived is because they hid you in a secret room under the floorboards. “You’re thinking awful hard Altair, wanna share what’s on your mind?” You shook your head no as a response to Soda’s previous question before realizing where you were. The gang brought you to the drive in. Supposedly it was the best one in all of Tulsa and where Bob hung around. Just as you were finding your seats you head a girl yell, “I DON’T LIKE BEING AROUND YOU WHEN YOU’RE DRUNK!” That’s when you saw the two people from your files, Sherri Valance and Bob Sheldon. You noticed that Dally was keeping an extra close eye on Bob, you decided to investigate. “If you glare any harder, they’ll be dead.” It’d also make your job a whole lot easier you thought to yourself and chuckled. “Don’t sneak up on me like that, man.” You grabbed his hands and pulled him up on his feet. “Introduce me to Bob.” Dally looked at you like you were the biggest dumbass on the planet. “Why the fuck would I do that? Me outta all people, you’re fucking crazy.” You put on your best pout and he rolled his eyes. “I’m not doing it, man.’ You let go of his hands and marched straight to Soda, making sure you swayed your hips in the process. It was evident that you were trying to make him the slightest big jealous. You had just met the guy but that didn’t stop you from taking in how gorgeous he was. If Dally was a cartoon character he’d have smoke coming out of his ears. The guy was fuming as he walked over and grabbed you by the arm, dragging you towards your target. “Bob this is Altair, Altair this is Bob.” The soc reeked of alcohol and it was clear as day that he was drunk off his ass. “Heyyyyyyyyyy Altairrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr” The man literally sounded like Ram from the Heathers Musical when he was saying hi to Veronica in the number ‘Blue’. “Hey Bob. If you ever want to get rid of your girlfriend, you should give me a call.” You licked your lips before seductively slipping him a piece of paper. He laughed darkly as he replied with a, “Definitely.” Man oh man was Dally pissed. It was funny really because this was all an act, if you weren’t in this line of work you would’ve asked him on a date already. The playboy seemed like he didn’t give a shit but you could tell that he was very loyal when in a relationship. “Do you wanna get hurt? Do ya have a death wish, kid?” You smirked and crossed your arms over your chest before you said, “Wow! It’s almost as if you’re my father or something!” He gripped your waist before letting out a low growl, “Far from it, Doll.” The rest of the night was rather uneventful but fun nonetheless. You guys hung out and stargazed at the lot after the movie was over and then they walked you home. “I had a really great time with y’all. Thanks for welcoming me with open arms.” You gave them each a hug before you backed into your house. Your life was a complete mess and it was about to get messier.
Today was the day when you went over to Bob’s house and murdered him. Murder sounds so harsh, you were just putting him to sleep..... eternally. You let out a loud sigh before grabbing a pink duffel bag, trying to throw him off as much as possible. You threw in several weapons and yards of rope. You ran to the bathroom and threw open the little compartment in the back of the medicine cabinet. You took out the sleeping pills and chloroform, throwing it in your bag. Next came the outfit, you threw on a tight leather fit that resembled Catwoman’s. You wanted to look appealing to Bob but at the same time you wanted to be safe in case he decided to fight back. Time flew by as you were trying to perfect the plan and then your alarm went off. There was a text from Steve and a notification reminding you to get going. How the fuck did Steve get your number and save his contact info? He asked if you could hang with him and the gang after 10 and it was currently 7. You quickly texted back and let him know that you would be there. The boys didn’t know about this secret rendezvous and you definitely weren’t going to drag them into it. You just needed them for a quick introduction and that was it. This line of work was crazy but it paid well and the people that you worked with were like family. You pushed your hair out of your face as you got to stepping because walking was better than pulling your car up to a soc’s house, especially when it’ll be a crime scene in an hour. Bob didn’t live very far, maybe about 5 blocks since you were in the middle of both the south side and the east side. Before you could knock you heard a glass break inside of the house. Bob told you that no one was home and there weren’t any cars in the driveway. You rummaged through your duffel bag and grabbed a switchblade and hid it in your hair, sounds impossible but you learn things when you kill people for a living. The good thing was that the door was unlocked and the bad thing was that you didn’t know who or what was inside of the house. All of a sudden you got hit in the back of the head, Bob towered over you. “Altair?” Bob scrunched his face together as you pulled out your switchblade as an answer. “Pony? Where the fuck are you, man?” You heard a recognizable voice say. Bob looked around in shock, many different people were here to kill him. While he was looking around the room you took the chance to grab a gun. You pointed the laser at the back of his head before saying, “You move, I shoot. I’m going to kill you either way but you’ve gotta answer some questions first.” Darry ran into the room before yelling, “Altair? Wait, you’ve been hired to kill this guy too?!” You already knew that Dally and Pony were in the house, not the whole fucking gang. Since when were they assassins? This must be the elite fucking fight club that they were talking about. While you were lost in your thoughts, Bob moved and got on top of you with a knife to your neck. “They never told me that the target was also a trained killer. Did they tell you?” You asked Darry and he shrugged before tackling Bob off of you. The duffel bag was gone. You grabbed your gun that had slid across the room before going upstairs. You turned left and glanced in the first room, it was spacious and evident that his family had money. You looked at the portraits as a pair of arms snaked around your waist. The gun was cocked fast as fuck and you spun with the barrel connected to the man’s forehead. You were met with Dally’s big brown eyes, “I could’ve fucking shot you man, don’t sneak up on me like that!” You lowered the gun before you pushed him off of you. “Who are you working for and why are you guys here on my mission?” He smirked before saying, “Tim sent us and I’m sure he sent you too.” You nodded before stepping closer and whispering, “Let’s talk about this later. I left Darry with an armed killer and I need my duffel bag right now.” Tweedledee and Tweedledum came in view right on time, “Hey Dally, we got the duffel- oh shit hey Altair.” Johnny and Pony had my bag open, exposing my weapons. You walked up and snatched the bag from Johnny’s hands before demanding, “You guys should distract Bob while I put this cloth over his mouth, he’ll knock out and we’ll tie him up. We ask him why the boss wants him dead, kill him, and get the fuck out of here.” You jumped when you heard Two-Bit scream, “This fucking bitch just bit me!” You all agreed upon the plan and informed Soda and Steve who were in the other room before walking down the stairs. Dally went to grab Bob’s arms but his attempt proved to be unsuccessful when his fist collided with your eye socket. Your eye stung and you could feel it throb knowing that it would be a nasty bluish purple color tomorrow morning. You jumped on Bob and the action made his head hit the floor with a sickening crack. You put the cloth over his mouth and held it there while tears blurred your vision. Dally pulled you off of Bob and cradled you in his arms, “Let’s get you home.” Only then did you notice that you were crying. The mission was compromised and you’d gotten a black eye out of it. You were untouchable, you were good at your job and this sort of broke you. “Hey you guys, I’m gonna take Altair-” He was interrupted when a quiet voice said, “(Y/N)” Your hair was brushed out of your face as he finished his sentence, “I’m gonna take (Y/N) home.” The boys nodded before they gave you a hug, Johnny being the last one and he gave you your duffel bag after. You thanked him before Dally scooped you up and began the trek to your house. “I can walk just fine, Dally.” You sassed and he smiled genuinely, he was happy to know that your happy demeanor was returning. ‘I know but you’re royalty and you should be treated as such.” You threw your head back in laughter before snuggling into his chest and drifting off to sleep.
You woke up due to Dally walking up the porch stairs and you gave him the pass code. He carried you all the way up to your room before asking what pajamas you wanted. The boy let his eyes drift over your entire being, drinking in the thought of you. The boy was absolutely taken with you which rarely ever happened. He was so angry at himself for falling in love at first and now he accepted it. He wanted you to hold him in your arms while he peppered kisses all over your face. He wanted to scare off anyone who came within 20 feet of you. He wanted to be your partner on missions just to make sure that you’d be okay even though he knew that you could handle yourself. He liked that you cared about the boys since they were the closest thing to a family that he had. He was so lost in thought that he didn’t even notice you got up until he heard the rustling of your hangers and drawers being moved around. “I could’ve gotten it for you, shortcake.” You turned and cupped both of his cheeks, “You took to long, my love.” Dallas Winston fucking melted right then and there, his tough exterior diminished because you kept matching his wit. You were literally the girl version of him with little quirks that you shared with other guys in the gang in you. “What the fuck are you doing to me, (Y/N).” You gave him an innocent but genuine smile, “The same thing that you’re doing to me, sport.” You got on the tip of your toes, just inches away from his lips. He could feel your breath tickle his face as you said, “Stay the night, please?” You bat your eyelashes before letting them flutter closed. Dally stared at you, not even noticing what you were trying to do, he was just looking at your beautiful face since the two of you had never been so close before. You let your eyes open up a bit before adding, “I was trying to kiss you but I won’t until you stop staring at me, dork.” He did his signature, “hahahahahaha” laugh before closing his eyes and meeting you halfway. Your lips collided and you were overwhelmed with a flurry of feelings, you were especially shocked when he kissed you quite softly instead of rough like you’d expected. It was a soft kiss but filled with passion, you were experiencing feelings that you didn’t even know existed. You went to slide your tongue over his bottom lip before tasting that metallic taste, his lip was still bleeding from earlier. You pulled away and covered your mouth, “Why would you let me kiss you when you slip your lip open?” He smirked and told you that it was worth it before letting you get dressed. He didn’t even notice that you took his shirt since the guy sleeps in nothing but his boxers. “Shit. You look so fucking fine. I hope you know that you’re mine now and I don’t intend on letting you go.” You crawled into the bed and settled into his frame before kissing him quickly. “I’ll think about it.’ With that said, the two of you drifted off to sleep and would later experience many amazing memories together, becoming the new Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

So, uh... that FFXV was a thing, wasn’t it?
It sure was, Bill... it sure as shit was.
So, yeah, I finally played and, just a moment ago, beat Final Fantasy XV.
I’m about to sum up my feelings on the game, many of which are shared with the general gaming community, so I might have nothing new to add at this point... But I feel strongly enough to keep writing, anyhow.
If you’re bothered by that sort of thing, scroll on.
Sometimes, in grade schools across the world, teachers feel the need to give every single child an award. Usually there’s nothing to it. Some might spring for a ribbon, others might give out trophies, and even fewer might elect to have other students create rewards for the recipients. The latter was my personal case in middle school. A boy, whose name escapes me because the entire affair was almost forgettable except for the reward, gave me the Most Potential award. Every other student made small bundles of candy or bought some small token for their reward recipient. I got... A small piece of notebook paper cut into the shape of a ribbon.
Most Potential.
I’m not sure if a more insulting award exists in the entire world.
What does this have to do with anything? I think you’re smart enough to see where I’m going.
Final Fantasy is quite possibly the franchise that made me a gamer. I played the first one the NES when I was a child, and I’m certain it was one of the first RPGs I had ever played. By middle school, when I was playing FF3 (really VI), I was knee deep in love with the genre and carving my path with a shovel made out of Blockbuster rental cases.
What I’m getting at is that my opinion on the franchise carries weight because I’m getting to be an old fart. I’ve seen the good, the bad, the ugly. I started out as Relm, and now I am becoming Cid (pick one).
When the game loads, the screen tells you that XV is for fans and first timers. My gut reaction to this was a big, fat, pessimistic, “Yeah, we’ll see.” XIII left me feeling like someone clipped my purse strings and ran off cackling into the night. Must stay on subject.... must... not... rant...
Well, I saw. I came, I saw, I conquered.
I didn’t hate it.
I didn’t love it, either. And here’s where the award comes in.
You, Final Fantasy XV, are the proud recipient of the Most Potential award. I’m even going the extra mile and writing this in a digital format rather than on notebook paper, so you can cherish it forever... as long as you have electricity.
What a hot-ass mess. Here are my beefs in broad strokes:
The combat feels sloppy. I know SE is trying desperately to get into the action RPG thing with FF because they feel like turn-based games are archaic and no one wants to play them. Fine. Whatever. That’s what made you a thing... but whatever. The problem is that they didn’t do a very good job with this. Kingdom Hearts does it amazingly well. Any Tales game puts it to shame.
Can I tell you a secret? You can laugh at me; it’s okay. I didn’t know you could just hold O to fight until I already had 80 hours on the game. Yep. I played that much just mashing O and square and warping. I spent untold minutes grinding my teeth during the Leviathan fight because nothing was happening. I kept missing an invisible quick-time event, apparently. IDK. (I researched it and others had the same problem? No clue.)
As a whole, the combat just felt very clunky and almost as if the AI was too smart. Maybe I should have played all the tutorials at the beginning. Who knows!
And magic sucked. So much suck. Friendly fire? REALLY? REALLY? THAT’S THE ROAD YOU CHOSE?
Hmm. what else.
Oh, you know how in some console RPGs, you can change the tactics in the menu to control the behavior of other characters in your party? Or you can switch who you want to play? None of that here. The other bros forget they have a spell equipped most of the time. But when they remember, you can be sure it’s when you’re in the thick of things so you can take that friendly fire. MMM Mmm. Good stuff.
Speaking of bros... the male gaze stuff was gross. They changed Ignis’ outfit so hit butt wasn’t hanging out, sure. But Cindy... the mechanic... boobs. Does not compute. Girl, get you some damn overalls so you don’t get burned.
I guess this Fantasy includes spark free machines.
So, then there’s the story. I won’t spoil what little story there is for folks that haven’t played it. I might spoil your urge to play it if you haven’t been able to yet. Sorry.
The game has some pretty amazing world-building. That’s not the same as the story, so don’t get excited. You get a general sense of history and a little bit of mythos. But it needed so much more to aid the story. People are so damned thirsty for lore that they’re theorycrafting THE FUCKING STORY for XV. It’s not in the game. They’re pulling shit out of thin air. Check Youtube, and you’ll get lost in a sea of “Ardyn’s TRUE name,” “The meaning of the true ending,” or “Eos Explained!” Yeah, okay, reeeeeeach for it.
And let’s not forget Kingsglaive and Brotherhood. Kingsglaive is a CG movie that accompanies the game. I enjoyed it. I watched it before I played the game (months before oops), because I was gifted both as a package deal. Problem is, Kingsglaive has some precious story that the game so desperately needed, it should have been IN THE GAME. And Brotherhood, the anime, should have been in the game as well. Maybe as flashbacks while camping. Yet even with both of these optional purchases, it’s still missing a truckload of substance.
Sadly, I think they tried to make up for it by putting a pace car in the game. That’s not even a cute metaphor; they really physically put in crap to slow you down. There’s a stamina bar for running, there’s a stamina bar on chocobos, and the Regalia has a set speed it cannot exceed (unless you get parts like the turbocharger several hours into the game). You can fast travel to your car, and you can get in your car and sometimes fast travel to quests or destinations (which, after chapter 13 seemed to be much more frequent unless I’m imagining it). However, sometimes you are forced to sit through minutes and minutes of scenic driving. And even that gets interrupted by a certain bro with a camera fetish. It felt very forced, and I fast traveled everywhere when given the opportunity. I somehow still wound up with 100+ hours on the game. Curse you, gambling and fishing.
The DLC episodes for each bro could have provided the game with a little more substance, too, but SE decided to nickel and dime their patrons for those. It’s becoming a trend that I hate. It’s like selling a jigsaw puzzle and then charging extra for 2-3 pieces that would complete the picture. Fuck a bunch of that.
Another thing that I felt was intentionally annoying stretched out: maps. Lestallam, or however you spell it, was laid out like a street gang’s fantasy. Lots of dead ends, terrible mini-map... just... please.. where’s my car... why is the big market tucked into the ass end of of Satan’s colon instead of on the main circuit WHERE A MARKET BELONGS?
My final Final Fantasy XV beef: TIME TRAVELING! choo choo all aboard the-woops-we-can’t-fix-this-shit train. No, there isn’t actual time-traveling in the game. Not really. Beyond a certain chapter, there is no way to return to Altissia or Lucis. SE handled this the way a dog does when it has a dingleberry. They dragged their ass on the floor until... no, no, I kid. They put in a menu that let’s you zip back to those two places without any explanation. You can do quests and hunts and get exp and items. Then, you can zip back to the “present” with all of those rewards. Hahahaha makes perfect sense, right? Riiiiiight? lolno.
It’s not part of the canon. You’re not dreaming or having a flashback or pulling an Assassin’s creed. They just added it in because otherwise you could plow through several chapters with no way of going back. It would be impossible to go back to those places (for lolstory reasons). They put in a point of no return and then were like, “Just kidding?”
Imagine if in VI you could play all the way to Kefka’s Tower and then, with zero explanation, a save point gives you the option to return to the World of Balance. Bit of a head-scratcher, eh?
They had to do it, though. Remember that substance thing? A lot of it comes from the sparse side quests, fishing, hunting, optional junk-getting. If you’re not interested in any of that, you could skip returning to the “past” altogether.
It had a lot of potential. Unlike a person getting that award, it doesn’t get a chance to better itself. They continue to drop patches on it but nothing that can fix the story.
I’m not sorry I played it. I did put 100+ hours on it, after all. I liked the characters (even if Noctis appears to grow into a Caucasian man and his eyes change color... um... what?). I liked the world. It needed a lot more fine-tuning and character development, though. As I said to a few people already: it felt like a love letter to Final Fantasy rather than an actual Final Fantasy game.
It sort of suffered that same thing XIII did with FF mythos being tacked on but not nearly as badly. Throw in some chocobos. Bitches love chocobos. And a moogle. Just the one; don’t get carried away.
Bravely Default was a damn good Final Fantasy game (if you can get over the repetition) and it wasn’t even a FINAL FANTASY GAME.
Yeah, I’ll shutup now.

It’s kind of a given that the President of the United States should be pretty smart. Despite what hack comedians will tell you about George W. Bush, an idiot can’t just walk into the White House and run the country. But even by the standards of the office, some of America’s most impressive minds could do some pretty ridiculous things.
#1 Lyndon B. Johnson Could Find Out Everything about a Person At an impressive 6 ft 3 1?2 in (192 cm), Lyndon B. Johnson is the second tallest President in history. The tallest U.S. President was Abraham Lincoln at 6 ft 3 3?4 in (192.4 cm). Johnson was well aware of his height, and often used it to his advantage to intimidate or coerce both political opponents and allies. He used what became colloquially known as “the treatment,” where he would use his massive frame and dominating presence to get all up in someone’s grill before making them spill their guts. What made it so effective was Johnson’s incredible ability to find out exactly what made people tick. Johnson was able to find out basically everything about a person, from how they felt about political issues to their shoe size, and could recall all of it without error and with just the right tone of voice to persuade or bully someone to do whatever he wanted. This allowed Johnson to bring even staunch opponents who totally disagreed with him around to his way of thinking in a matter of minutes by overwhelming them with his intricate knowledge of their politics, ideas and flaws.
#2 JFK Knew How to Shake Hands Perfectly Considering that John F. Kennedy allegedly slept with more beautiful women than a copy of Cosmo, it’s not going to come as a surprise that he was known as a fairly charismatic dude. However, President Kennedy wasn’t just charming and handsome — he was a borderline hypnotist when it came to influencing people. For example, President Kennedy once commissioned an entire study on the art of shaking hands, all so that he could set the tone of a relationship from the instant he met someone. JFK’s handshake was so comforting and warming that it wasn’t uncommon for him to return after a long day of meeting people with a scratched up hand from the sheer amount of people clambering to grasp at his magical palm. When it came to talking to people, JFK was known to be able to sway an entire crowd with nothing more than his smile, as you can see in this video of him killing it in a question and answer session. What makes this more impressive is that JFK could reportedly turn on the charm at will, being able to influence people to his way of thinking even if they didn’t fully agree with it. We guess Magneto was right — JFK really did have a mutant superpower.
#3 Teddy Roosevelt Could Read an Entire Book Before Breakfast There’s little we could say about how awesome Roosevelt was that wouldn’t just be us repeating ourselves, but few people realize that Roosevelt was both an unflinching badass and a huge nerd. It’s estimated that Roosevelt read in excess of 10,000 books, many of which were in foreign languages because even when it came to reading Roosevelt liked to challenge himself. Roosevelt’s inhuman ability to eye-punch knowledge came about as a result of him teaching himself to speed-read, which allowed him to quickly gloss over a book while still retaining about 90% of the information it contained. This meant that Roosevelt could read a book or magazine in a matter of minutes or hours and hold detailed, lengthy conversations about its contents like he’d studied it for years. Roosevelt’s thirst for knowledge was so great that he reportedly read a book before he ate breakfast every single day. Kind of makes you want to finish reading that novel you’ve had sitting around for a month and a half, huh?
#4 Calvin Coolidge Only Lost One Election While Calvin Coolidge may not be the most well-known President, he’s noted as being one of the most electorally successful — in his entire political career he only lost once at the ballet box. When Coolidge applied to be a member of Northampton, Massachusetts City Council in 1898, he won. A year later he was re-nominated but applied to be a City Solicitor instead, and won. This trend continued for the next few decades as Coolidge went from being a member of city council to a State Legislator, to a Mayor, to a Governor, to a Vice President and finally to being the President himself, winning almost every time by a landslide. In fact, when he became President Coolidge won the vote in every State with the sole exception of the home state of the guy running against him. When the time came for Coolidge to run again he politely declined, saying that 10 years in Washington was too much, even though many agree he would have won again. He retired with an almost flawless political record. The only loss Coolidge ever suffered was when he campaigned to be a member of a local School Board, because he didn’t have kids that went to that school.
#5 James Garfield Could Write in Two Languages at the Same Time James Garfield is mostly remember alongside William McKinley as being one of the Presidents who was shot but didn’t have a cool hat or nice eyes. Which is a shame, because James Garfield is possibly the smartest man to ever hold office. Garfield had an exceptionally keen mind, teaching himself to be proficient in a multitude of disciplines and subjects. After just a year at college he was teaching classes on literature and ancient language, when previously he’d worked there as the janitor. Garfield was also known to be ambidextrous, which he would show off to friends and colleagues by asking them to pose him a question before writing down the answer in Latin with one hand and Greek with the other, all while maintaining unflinching eye contact.
#6 John Adams Had a Silver Tongue Even if your knowledge of American history is limited to whatever you managed to glean from Assassin’s Creed 3 in-between stabbing wolves, you can probably tell what happened at the Boston Massacre from the name alone. If you’re still a little fuzzy, the short version is that in 1770 eight British soldiers opened fire on a crowd of people in the middle of Boston, killing five people. When the soldiers walked into the courtroom, almost everyone expected the sentence to be death. But with just a few words the future President was able to convince the entire jury that the men were innocent because they acted in self-defense, resulting in six of them walking free while the other two were given the equivalent of a slap on the wrist. Just let that stew for a moment. John Adams managed to convince a jury to acquit a bunch of British soldiers charged with shooting people in the street at a time when revolutionary fervor was growing. We can’t even convince employees at Subway to give us extra ham.
#7 Lincoln Trumped a 13,000 Word Speech In Two Minutes The Gettysburg Address is one of those speeches that will never be forgotten, mostly because you could write it on the back of a napkin. Clocking in at just 272 words and delivered in a little over two minutes, Lincoln’s speech was barely longer than the previous entry on this list and yet it’s consistently ranked as one of the greatest speeches ever given. A fact that’s often overlooked is that Lincoln’s speech was never supposed to be the Gettysburg Address. That honor originally belonged to the two hour, 13,000 word long speech given by Edward Everett. His speech, which is regarded as a masterpiece of oration given by a man famed for his abilities as a speaker, was trumped by little more than an off the cuff utterance from Lincoln. Immediately after Lincoln gave his speech, Everett, who’d spent weeks crafting his magnum opus, knew that he’d been bested and the next day he penned a letter to Lincoln saying that he was happy to come close with two hours to what Lincoln had accomplished in two minutes.
#8 Andrew Jackson Managed to Pay Off All of America’s Debts Did you know that there’s only ever been one time in America’s history that the country’s been entirely debt free? It was all thanks to Andrew Jackson and how much he hated owing people money. When Jackson took office in 1829, he vowed that he’d eliminate America’s 58 million dollars of debt, the equivalent of paying off about 800 million today. Six years later, America was debt free — Jackson had somehow managed to pay off every cent through careful planning, frugal spending and telling creditors where to stick it. Jackson’s feat has never since been equaled. Even worse is that America was only debt free for a year before it once again needed to borrow money. Still, Jackson accomplished something many thought to be impossible just because he really didn’t like the idea of running a country that owed someone money.
#9 Thomas Jefferson Could Read Five Books at Once When it comes to smart Presidents it’s hard to top Thomas Jefferson. An expert in almost every subject he put his mind to, Jefferson could converse with anyone about anything effortlessly. President Kennedy once famously addressed a room filled with Nobel Prize winners by saying: “I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered together at the White House, with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.” Nothing sums up Jefferson’s intelligence better than this, an invention personally created by Jefferson so that he could read five books simultaneously. Jefferson was a prolific writer who liked to consult multiple books while penning essays and letters, so to make this easier Jefferson created a revolving book stand that would allow him to read and consult multiple texts. We really think these should still be made so that we can see what happens if we stick 5 iPads to it.
#10 George W. Bush Didn’t Need To Have Meetings Because He Already Knew It All Just to be clear, yes, we’re talking about the same President Bush who once said “Rarely is the question asked: is our children learning?” the same President Bush who coined the term “Misunderestimate” and the same President Bush who once tried to exit a press conference through a locked door. Although pop culture has painted Bush as a buffoon, stupid people don’t get to be President of the United States. Part of the reason Bush is often seen as inept is his strong southern accent, which studies have shown makes someone appear less intelligent regardless of their educational background. In regards to Bush, while he wasn’t an amazing student he was by no means a poor one. According to aides and people who’ve interviewed him George W. Bush is a remarkably smart man, with one interviewer describing him as “60 IQ points smarter in private than he was in public.” During his time as President, many commented on his ability to recall and absorb information with an extraordinary level of speed and comprehension. It’s said that Bush would often hurry people through presentations about complex policies because he’d already read through their notes and didn’t want his time wasted. On one occasion, Bush met with several of his advisers who were all advising him about a “thorny policy.” After three long meetings in which no agreement could be reached, an aide reached out to Bush to arrange a fourth meeting. In response, Bush meticulously listed each adviser’s key talking points along with a full and frank rebuttal before asking if a fourth meeting was really necessary. It wasn’t. Of course this doesn’t mean Bush was a good President or that he made smart choices during his time in office, as people smarter than us have discussed. It just means that he was smarter than most people gave him credit for, which considering how stupid most people think he is makes him pretty much a genius.
