Touchdown
*gif not mine, credit goes to the owner*
I just want to take a moment to say thank you for the love on my last fic! It made my lil ole heart swell to see that peopled enjoyed it enough to leave a like or reblog.
This is just something special I had in my arsenal that I wrote for a friend a few months ago. I touched it up a bit and added a few things here and there. It all started when we were talking about how much we loved when Chris' accent got heavier after he'd been drinking, and well, I couldn't help myself lol. I hope you enjoy the fluff! xoxo
I apologize for any grammatical errors, I tried to proof-read but am also a little exhausted lol.
Pairing: Chris Evans x Reader
Word Count: 2844
Warnings: I don't think there's anyway? Mentions of being drunk/drinking alcohol, cursing, and illusions to sexy times, but that's about it.
You hadn’t noticed how furiously your knee was bouncing up and down until the person sitting next to you on the subway got up to move seats once the train squealed to a stop. You sighed and ran your hands down the front of your thighs. Normally being a little late didn’t bother you as much, but tonight you were meeting him.
You flipped your wrist over to check your watch. 8:30pm. In all honesty, it had probably been only thirty seconds later than when you checked it the last time. Another deep sigh escaped from your lips as you started to become hyper aware of the train remaining still at the current stop. What could possibly be taking so long? You knew he wouldn’t care if you were running late, but the time the two of you had together already felt so minuscule. You wanted to capitalize on every second you could.
The train began moving again and you slumped back into your seat, feeling only a small amount of relief. It was becoming painfully apparent that you needed to try and relax. You could feel the sweat building up on your body, the sting on your palms from where your fingernails were pressing in with a vengeance moments ago, and you could hear your heart thumping in your ears. Your hand dug around in your purse for a few moments before finding the small case you were looking for. Opening it, you slipped your headphones into your ears and let your head rest on the window behind you as music intertwined with your thoughts.
Once upon a time, you made fun of people who decided to go to grad school. What kind of a clown would spend thousands of MORE dollars and go BACK to school?? Not to mention the stress of the assignments, the due dates - it was not for you...or so you thought.
Now here you are, a regular booboo the fool.
NYU’s graduate program for design and merchandising wasn’t necessarily part of your 5-year plan, but when the opportunity landed in front of you it was difficult to pass up. NYU was a school you had only dreamt of attending back in high school. When you were a senior in high school you were able to tour the campus and fell in love immediately. Hours upon hours were spent researching grants, scholarships, and all sorts of ways to try to make it happen. However, the dream ended as most teenage dreams do - crushed. There was no way you or your parents could afford the loans that it would surely wrack up to attend the out of state university, and there was no way you could ask your parents take on that kind of debt just so you could go to college. UMass was the way to go - close to home and familiar. Not to mention you were able to obtain several scholarships and grants that helped bring down the cost tremendously. Little did you know, boring ole UMass would bring you one of the most important things in your life.
Applying for graduate school wasn’t an easy decision and one you couldn’t really take all the credit for. A smile crept across your face as you reminisced on the night you nervously brought up the idea to your long-term boyfriend.
“I think you should do it,”
“I know, right?” you scoffed, “it’s insane, why would I do something so stup...wait, what? You do?”
“Of course I do. This is something you love and that you’re passionate about. Do you know how many hours of my life were spent listening to you ramble about NYU?” he questioned with a grin.
“It will open up so many doors for you. We can make things work,” a chuckle escaped from those beautiful lips as he saw your dumbfounded expression. He wrapped his fingers around your waist and pulled you close, “What? Did you expect me to forbid it? Cmon, baby, what kind of guy do you take me for?”
You didn’t have a lot of wins in your life, but you did have Chris.
When you got accepted, he took off a week from work to drive you 3 and a half hours south to help get you settled and moved into your temporary new home. The two of you ate a disgusting amount of pizza, moved a ridiculous amount of heavy furniture in the middle of a summer heat wave, and enjoyed each other’s company before the long-distance thing would set in. Chris spent that week encouraging you every step of the way, talking you off the ledge when you were convinced you had made the wrong decision, and made sure to help you christen every possible surface of your new place in the most deliciously sinful way.
You bit your lip slightly at the thought and a warm feeling spread across your face. Chris was one of the most incredible people you had met in this world. Kind, caring, funny, intelligent, passionate, and god was he sexy. The connection the two of you had was scary at first, but now you just couldn’t imagine spending your life with anyone else.
The robotic voice came over the loud-speaker in the subway car and you were rudely ripped back to reality as it pulled into your stop. You hurriedly scooped up your bag and jogged off the train.
It had been a promise between the two of you when you moved that there would be equal effort when it came to visiting and keeping in contact while having good, open communication. Long distance was hard but the two of you were determined to make it work. FaceTime calls, hours upon hours of texting, and even as far as writing the occasional letter back and forth (because your boyfriend was a hopeless romantic and you loved it so much). This weekend was your turn to come home to visit, and of course your last class had to go longer than anticipated. Fuckin’ Tiffany and her stupid ass questions.
The muscles of your calves burned as you kept up your hurried pace, weaving through the crowds of people gathered on sidewalks outside of various clubs and restaurants. It was a weekend night and the Patriots were playing, which meant the city was more alive than usual. New York was it's own beast, but it was a different type of hustle and bustle. Nights like these made your heart ache for home - the thick Massachusetts accents, the rowdy voices of bar patrons arguing about the game, the hugs shared between family members as they parted after dinner, and the faint smell of nicotine and alcohol that hung in the air.
As the neon sign that hung in the pub window came in to view you felt your heart dip down into your stomach. Last weekend’s visit had to be cancelled due to some stuff coming up with Chris’ work and a surprise assignment for you, so you hadn’t seen your boyfriend in 2 weeks. With a deep breath you swung open the door and scanned the crowd for him. He told you that he would be there promptly at 7:15pm for pregame shenanigans with his friends - which actually translated to how many pitchers of beer could they suck down before kick off.
“Aw, come ON! That is such a bullshit call!”
You heard him before you saw him. Of course. A grin spread across your lips as you shook your head. The thought of leaving to avoid secondhand embarrassment crossed your mind briefly before you picked up your feet and made your way through the crowd toward the sound. A room full of people from New England and you would still recognize that voice anywhere.
Everyone else seemed to fade away as you saw the outline of the tall, dark haired man standing at the bar. The slight freckles that spattered the back of his neck, the Brady jersey that he spent WAY too much money customizing, and the signature backward ball cap were ingrained in your subconscious memory. Not to mention if you didn’t recognize his outline or his voice, you would definitely recognize that ass anywhere.
You loved how passionate he got about sports and the way his Boston accent seemed to get thicker with each beer he consumed. Growing up in the area, you wouldn't think the accent would send a tingle down your spine the way it does, but it was different - it was Chris. Not to mention the sparkle in his eye when he would watch his favorite team or the way he would get in to arguments whenever someone tried to say something negative about them. You loved your big, handsome, over-sized toddler man so damn much.
A light tap on his shoulder made him whip around, his slightly opened mouth from his interrupted conversation curved upwards into a wicked grin as he made the connection of who was finally standing in front of him.
“Hey there, handsome. I don’t see a ring on your finger. You single?” You grinned, feeling your entire body fill with warmth as Chris leaned back and grabbed his chest as he erupted in laughter.
“Nah, nah, nah, unfortunately for you I am taken” he responded as he snaked his arms around your waist, sliding his hands into your back pockets as he pulled you into his figure.
“That is too bad,” you tsk'd, running a finger down his toned bicep, “she’s one lucky girl.”
“I think I’m the lucky one,” he grinned. He leaned down to meet your lips in a kiss. You sighed into it, allowing your body to mold itself so perfectly into his. The taste of beer on his lips and the smell of his cologne was intoxicating - it was home. You immediately allowed him entrance as you felt his tongue glide along your bottom lip. Your body felt small in his strong grip and you couldn’t help but laugh a bit as he gave your ass a firm squeeze. Normally, this type of bold, public display of affection would make you cringe away but at this point you were lost in Chris that you had absolutely no shame. Each time the two of you embraced had always felt like the first. Your heart still fluttered and your knees still got weak, like you were a 16 year old being kissed for the first time.
In the middle of your reunion moment, however, something happened in the game that made the entire bar erupt in boo’s and curses. Chris lifted his lips from yours to look over his shoulder and inspect what he had missed. You laughed and shook your head as you pushed him back towards his friends and took a seat in the bar stool he had been standing behind initially. His large hands found a natural place on your shoulders. While his eyes remained glued on the TV he began applying a moderate amount of pressure to your neck and shoulders. You didn’t realize how much your body craved that touch, his touch, until you immediately melted back into him.
The bartender slid a beer in front of you with a wink and you mouthed your thanks. You felt a twinge in your heart as you looked around, taking in the atmosphere of the bar. This was a typical weekend night for the two of you whenever you were living together. Football, drinks, pub food, and friends. If it wasn’t this pub it was your living room, just a couple blocks away. You didn’t even mind that it was your first night back and you weren’t alone, spending it immediately wrapped up in your satin sheets. The atmosphere, the people - it was so warm and familiar that you really wouldn’t rather be doing anything else. Plus, being wrapped up together in the sheets was sure to follow.
“I missed you,” hummed a pair of lips as they placed a kiss on the shell of your ear. A shiver shot down your spine at the sensation of his warm breath fanning over your neck. You reached up a hand and connected it to the nape of his neck.
“I missed you too,” you replied, turning your head to plant a kiss on his stubbled cheek.
His arms changed position as he wrapped them in front of your shoulders and crossed them, resting his chin on the top of your head. Your hand absentmindedly rubbed his forearms as you nursed your beer and placed your focus onto the game for the first time tonight.
The laughter seemed to escape from your chest naturally and effortlessly the entire night, as it always had a habit of doing when Chris was around. The camaraderie between him and his buddies during a game was something you’d grown to enjoy over the years. Chris’ competitive nature and the way his jaw clenched when something wasn’t going the way he wanted was always kinda...hot. All of his friends were huge assholes, but in the best way. It was always entertaining to hear them jab at each other and do what they could to rile someone up. They were the life of every party you had ever attended and they had a way of making a boring night a lot more interesting.
Thankfully (for the integrity of the bar) the Pats won the game with a surprise touchdown in the last 30 seconds of the game. Chris, being the guy he is, bought a final round for his friends and a nearby group they had been going back and forth with all night. You couldn’t help but laugh as he drunkenly leaned across the counter and slurred his order to the bartender.
“I need a round for m’friends and for these assholes over here who thought Tom Brady was anything but a winner!” the group started yelling in protest and he simply waved them off and started sliding beers down the bar.
The group eventually moved to a bigger round top so everyone could shoot the shit and banter about the outcome of the game. You were tucked into Chris’ side, hands intertwined as he was passionately discussing the importance of Brady’s legacy with a stranger who made the mistake of stopping to talk to him. Your eyes followed the motion of your thumb as it traced small circles onto the back of his. Your other hand under your chin, holding up the weight of your head as your exhaustion started to catch up with you. Chris, although slightly drunk, picked up on your body language and raised your hand to his lips for a kiss.
“Alright, fellas,” he said as he stood up from his seat, pulling you up with him, “the lady and I are gonna call it a night. See you boys next weekend”.
“Chris, we don’t have to go,” you began to protest as he tucked his jacket around your shoulders.
“Mm, ‘course we do,” he replied with a soft smile, “you’re so tired, baby. I can see it in those beautiful eyes”.
You could feel your cheeks turn a light shade of pink as you rolled your eyes at his attempt at laying it on thick. After what felt like a proper 10 minute goodbye session, the group said their final goodbyes, hugs included, and you walked out of the pub hand in hand.
The walk home was filled with the sounds of cars passing by and conversation of what each other had missed in the week prior. Small talk typically felt like such a chore, but with Chris every conversation came naturally. Even when he had absolutely no idea what you were talking about, he would listen intently and ask all the questions as if it was the most interesting conversation in the world.
The lock on the apartment door clicked as you pushed it open and entered. You smiled as you stopped into the middle of the living room, taking in the home you missed so dearly. A soft tapping of toenails against the hardwood made your heart soar as you met the eyes of your sweet pup, Dodger. A squeal left your lips as you squatted down to give love to the sweet boy. Chris always made fun of you when you came home, saying that you always seemed to miss Dodger more than you did him and I mean, he wasn’t entirely wrong about that statement.
Once again lost in your own world, you didn’t even notice Chris leaned up against the wall watching you with a smile.
“Oh my god,” you gushed, standing up, “do you like...like me or something?”
Chris grinned as he crossed the room and caught your belt loop with his finger, pulling you into him slowly.
“Yeah,” his voice had dropped down an octave, “you could say that”.
“Mm,” your tongue swiped across your lower lip and you wrapped your arms around his neck, “care to show me how much?”
The look in his eyes made your core burn. The tension building between you two became too much to handle as you crashed your lips into his. The kisses were messy and you could feel the sense of urgency between you two. His beard scratched against the column of your throat with a delicious burn as he left wet kisses across your jaw and down the side of your neck. Chris’ hands found their way back into the ass pockets of your jeans as he started walking you back towards the direction of the bedroom.
Soon, there was a trail of clothes leading to your bedroom and you felt very sorry for your neighbors. It had been a long time, but Chris always had a way of welcoming you home.

(Overdue) Media round-up (January 2019)
Feb’s almost over and I was gonna write about what I’ve processed when I realized I only posted about the anime I watched, I think? So this is a catch-up post for manga and games, before the end of this month in a few days. If you want to read the January anime round-up, it’s in my “curry watches anime” tag.
Games:
Puresabe’s 2019 New Year Rockman Hack (NES): Puresabe does one of these every year and they are always pretty hard! But I think the last few years have been much more balanced than their older projects. They are always just boss fights, but with complex patterns and sometimes multiple phases. Being just a boss fight (or two) means they are super short, but you will spend most of your time learning them. Also there are no checkpoints, so every death means you’re back to phase one. It’s very fun when it’s a good hack, and this was a good hack. I had a very rough start to the year and considered giving up, but went back and beat it, for good fortune in the new year. (Beaten 1/2/19)
The 2nd Super Robot Wars (NES): I decided 2019 would be the year I got into SRW, and so I started here, because the first game actually has no hard plot. I enjoyed it to a point, but the difficulty climbs to an absurd degree, and I wish I’d cut my losses and just youtubed it. The game allows you to save at any time during a turn, and resetting the console means it recycles the RNG and you can get different luck. This is...required. Most of the way into the game, I was having to reset twenty times in a row per unit action, just to make sure I could survive an enemy attack, or successfully hit an enemy. The funniest thing is that when I finally beat this, I almost immediately started up one of the later games, so clearly the kernel of value was visible to me through all that bullshit. (Beaten 1/13/19)
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: World of Light (Switch): I had been chomping at the bit for what felt like forever just to play this mode of this game, and not only was it good, it surpassed my expectations multiple times. This mode has a lot of twists for something that mostly implies narrative, or otherwise ignores it. I’m the rare person who mostly plays Smash Bros solo because I have NO FRIENDS, and this was worth the price of admission for me. I don’t consider Smash Ultimate itself beaten yet because I haven’t beaten Classic Mode on 9.9 difficulty yet. I have finished with 9.8, like, four times. Please kill me. (Beaten 1/18/19)
PaRappa the Rapper (PSP): While taking care of my cat, I found an opportunity to actually use my PSP for the first time since...2008 or 09? When I bought it secondhand? Jesus. Anyway, it turns out that PaRappa actually has absurd input detection and an equally hard to parse system for what counts as “freestyling”, which ultimately results in a final stage where you’re...required to play notes that are completely unrelated to what it says to do on-screen? I still beat the game (in a single sitting, too. it’s short), but I was pretty frustrated. Greenblat’s aesthetic is iconic, and the songs are very fun to listen to (this game has maybe the only potty humor I actually enjoyed), but the game part is actually the problem. (Beaten 1/25/19)
Patapon (PSP): I played PaRappa spontaneously, but I’ve actually meant to play the Patapon series for quite a while. This is less a song-performing rhythm game and more of an action/strategy type of rhythm game where you consistently keep a beat to keep morale up. It’s pretty good, but missions can be 3-6 minutes of consecutively hitting four notes and then waiting four notes, and while that itself sounds doable, I am just terrible at rhythm and messed up a lot of good opportunities. The difficulty curve in this is high in the beginning, lowers over time, before hitting a huge spike and then being a cakewalk for the last four or so missions. There’s also a lot of grinding, which means this rhythm game came out to almost a 16 hour run. A bit tiring. Not sure when I’ll jump on Patapon 2, but I hope it’s easier to play, since my impetus for picking up the series was the intro FMV for the third game. (Beaten 1/30/19)
Games beaten in January: 5 Games beaten in 2019 thus far: 5
Manga:
Getter Robo Vol 2 (Finished): I didn’t feel like plowing through 51 episodes of the old 70s anime, so I decided to just read the much shorter, and somewhat unrelated manga. In the show, the heroes are what they are, heroes. Likable mains for kids to watch on Saturday mornings. In the manga, as per Go Nagai’s influence (and the main author, Ken Ishikawa, who I LOVE and who was Nagai’s assistant), the heroes are violent asshole moron sociopath terrorists who gradually become more unhinged as they are exposed to the very radiation that powers the machine they use to fight dinosaurs (though said gradual descent is more of a thing in the later manga/OVAs). Also, the villains are dinosaurs. Turns out they had the original ancient civilization and Getter Rays chased them into the Earth’s core and they want to planet back. That’s Getter Robo! It’s very good.
Getter Robo G Vol 1-3 (Finished): This is kind of more of the same as the first, and again, I didn’t want to watch the 39 episodes, I wanted the primer so I could play SRW. As I’ve approached the later games, it turns out they prefer to take influence from the shows, not the manga. Oops! Whatever. In this sequel, it turns out the Dinosaur Empire was a pawn or something to It Was Aliens, the Hyakki Empire, and it’s...more of the same. In both the GR and GR G mangas, I found the occasional chapter with wildly different art, and I figured that those were Ishikawa’s gorgeous art, and the majority was Nagai’s. But, I’m not sure, and I wonder if those were revised or extra chapters done years later. Idk. Anyway, they are both very fun reads, even if they serve more as primers of the lore.
Shin Getter Robo Vol 1-2 (Finished): HERE’s where things start to get really good, and surreal, and bleak. This manga is not adapting a tv series (though later OVAs would reference it. This manga is actually I think where a lot of the inspiration for Gurren Lagann came from, and if you like that series, you should read this to see the connection. I can’t really explain without spoiling either (though if in 2019 you don’t know what happens in Gurren, you are super lucky and need to go watch it all asap). NOTE, this takes place after the 7 volume Getter Robo Go manga, which has a show but I think is unrelated, but more importantly is probably the BEST Getter Robo series. I read that before knowing a thing about Getter and still loved it (though I think having context will really benefit it). GR Go is the biggest justification for getting into the series. If any friends of mine want to look into this series, I’ll actually help give them a guide. Interestingly, the most modern Getter series (of which the most recent was in 2004 (please come back)) all take reference from the darker mangas, not the old 70s show.
Mazinger Z Vol 1-5 (Finished): I think Go Nagai’s works are weird, melodramatic, gross, and just kinda badly drawn. They are great experiences, if you go in with a grain of salt and also avoid the *most* transgressive ones. Don’t google Iron Virgin Jun. Just. Don’t do it. Devilman is probably his best work, but Mazinger Z is another series with a much more famous long-running 70s cartoon (92 episodes!!!) and burned itself into the nostalgia of Japan. Whereas Devilman eventually becomes traumatizing, Mazinger Z is pretty laid back and goofy, while also being Nagai’s brand of The Most Dramatic Thing Ever. If you follow me, you might’ve seen me post pages in my manga tag. It’s a LOT. Though, actually, I don’t think this manga is all that great. It can be *really* funny, but I don’t even remember if the series actually ends. If you read one or two volumes and want to put it down, I think you’re safe to. You got most of the lore. The biggest events seem to take place in later series that I haven’t delved into yet.
UFO Robo Grendizer Vol 1 (Finished): I actually haven’t been able to find anywhere to read Great Mazinger, the sequel series, so I skipped to Grendizer, which is the second sequel. It’s pretty unrelated continuity-wise, so it’s easy to pick up. This is only one volume and yeah they really just want you to watch the 74 episode show, but I’m good. Still, this is a fun book, and Nagai throws in his batshit ideas. The main character is an alien prince whose tragic backstory is literally that the villain kidnapped his younger siblings and all the country’s children and just! Dropped them all from the sky to their death in the middle of the city! And they don’t censor it! GO NAGAI! I really need to read the autobio manga Gekiman because of what snippets I’ve seen, Nagai is actually a super mild-mannered dude who doesn’t really get where his ideas cross lines. If you want to say “oh that’s just wacky Japan”, it’s really not, he was public enemy #1 with parents all over the country for a long time.
Super Robot Retsuden Vol 1 (Finished): This is a single volume crossover of Nagai super robot IPs including Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Great Mazinger, Grendizer, and Steel Jeeg (a guy who’s more Ultraman-adjacent than super robot), and there’s no real plot beyond “oh no new bad guy! buy the toys, kids!” It’s throwaway, and I mostly read it to see who Jeeg is without getting into his own series. Also, it was drawn by Ishikawa, so I felt a bit obligated. His art is just so pretty.
Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer Vol 1 (and maybe 2?): Satoshi Mizukami is a godly storyteller who uses the language of shonen to tell deeply mature and introspective stories for adults and if you follow my posts you might remember me gushing about Spirit Circle and Planet With. I actually haven’t touched this series since February started but I need to get back in because the first two volumes out of ten are amazing (warning, though: there’s a pet death and it’s real sudden and was hard for me to handle). Please read Mizukami’s works.
Manga volumes read in January: 14-15 Manga volumes read in 2019 thus far: 14-15
---
Okay that’s everything. I wrote a lot more than I expected to. If you read all that, thanks. If you are interested in any of the things I wrote about, great! If you decide to play through SRW2, don’t, stop, don’t do that. In a few days I’ll be writing about a much better SRW game.

“ AKIHABARA, JAPAN”
“Mina, Ohayo gozaimazu!”, “Konnichiwa”, “Arigato”, “Doitishimaste”, “Sumimasen”, “Hai Hai”, “Konbawa”,
Apparently, these are the common Japanese words you can hear from this place which is Akihabara, Japan. As far as I know, Akihabara is known as the world's leading electric city and home to the Otaku culture. It's a great place to shop for Japan's underground culture and high-tech gadgets.
I have longer wanted to wish that I will be here in this place, so that I can experience the good quality of anime books and series and especially to join their celebration and tradition. Akihabara, Japan is famous because of the great number of otaku people living in here and due to the fact that this place is also called “anime world”, where products and equipment mostly displayed are about two-dimensional characters made by three-dimensional creators.
Akihabara, Taito City, Japan is the complete name of this place where you can find different personalities, good, creative and imaginative people. People in this city tend to invite people who has interest in anime and manga to buy their products and to make those people happy.
The restaurants, the cafes, the amusing stores are filled with anime and manga characters and also there are people who are dressed up as characters which we basically call them as “cosplayers”, their main purpose is to dress up and invite people to go to their store or café in order to buy their products and also to entertain them with their charismatic aura, like they will act as the real two-dimensional character so that the customers will enjoy buying their satisfying products.
Usually the seller there are displaying figures, figures that simply look like a doll of an anime or manga character even the materials used to made it are unique and high quality and people are amused by how people and what process they actually made the figure. They are also selling books filled with beauty and imagination, you can really enjoy just by reading it. They also sell costumes and foods to be able to feel the newcomer that he or she is at home and really belong in this particular place, and the newcomer will be able to like Akihabara, Japan.
Top places you must visit in Akihabara Japan! (Otaku Version)
1. Yodobashi Camera!
It is one of the best electronics stores in Japan to buy the latest electronics products, the 9 storied department store “Yodobashi Camera” is where the widest variety of electronic gadgets can be found. 10 Questions from Scribble-dee-vee
I got another tag from @scribble-dee-vee a bit ago, thank you so much!
I love getting tags, it makes me feel warm and soft honestly, thank you everyone that’s tagged me in these games. I’m not used to being an active participant in a tumblr community and it really means a lot to me.
I’m gonna answer the questions under the break.
For the general OC questions, I’ll stick with Breaking Furnace-verse Connor, and V because they’re the ones on my mind right now.
1. How do you feel about snow? How do your OCs feel?
I love snow. I love looking at it, and I love temporarily being in it. Once I’m cold and wet, I suddenly hate snow, but I like watching it fall and I like eating it and running around in it. Snow is great.
Connor has more mixed feelings. He likes to visit it, knowing that when he comes home he can walk around without almost dying. He’s a ground boi and likes it when both of his feet are firmly on the ground without sliding.
V has never actually experienced snow firsthand! They’ve seen it and manipulated it secondhand, but they’ve never seen it up close or touched it. I can’t wait for that to change.
2. Hot drink of choice?
Apple Cider, 100%.
3. What winter holidays do you celebrate, if any? How about your OCs?
Connor and I both celebrate Christmas and, to a lesser extent because of money and time, Yule.
V doesn’t celebrate any holidays, not now anyway. Maybe in the future, they’ll find something they fit into.
4. Favorite activity for a snowy day?
If I’m home with family, I like to go sit in the car and experience the snow around me while I read so I don’t have to be in the snow to be in the snow. Back in the city, I’m not sure. I haven’t really had any snowy days up there yet (which will probably change when I go back next week). I’ll probably just write and stare at where the mountain should be outside the window (I can’t see her when it’s cloudy, sigh)
5. If your OCs wore ugly holiday sweaters, what would they look like/say on the front? (Feel free to include pics!)
My (Sawyer’s) one and only ugly holiday sweater has a reindeer on it (Rudolf, sequined red nose and all). The rest of it is green, and the reindeer is wearing a Santa hat and a scarf.
Okay, Connor has this dumb sweater that he basically lives in for most of December and I can’t take him seriously when he wears it. It’s pure white, and I’m almost certain that he uses magic to keep it so clean and bright but that’s a whole other thing. It’s covered in white puffs and Christmas lights with actual ornaments hanging off of it. Sometimes he’ll try to go hang out in The Lounge to hang out and he’s been told to straight up go away until he changes out of it because it’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen. I hate it, and I wish I knew where in the Cube he was hiding it so I could burn it.
While V does not celebrate any holidays, Jesse (the vampire), gave them a simple sweater with sequin ornaments on it because they threw a party in the Lounge and had extras for people without hideous sweaters to take. V kept it and has worn it a couple times.
6. What would your perfect present be this year?
Okay, my perfect present, the only thing I really asked for, was a clarinet. And I got it. I think my stepmom thought she was being sneaky by asking my sister for details about what I wanted, but Sam and I have pretty much agreed to just tell each other whenever she asks us about our gifts lmao.
7. Your snowman has come to life thanks to a magic hat! What will you do together for a day?
The concept of living snowmen terrifies me because if a snowman comes to life, it’s surrounded by the flesh of its people. I would probably take the hat off its head because i can’t handle that kind of responsibility.
I probs overthought this questions but Frosty the Snowman scares me.
8. Any OCs with ice powers? Any OCs who might have ice powers in a winter wonderland AU?
None with specifically ice powers, but Connor and most of my daydream selves have a lot of control over the environment in my daydreams. So, they theoretically could use ice powers. I think the one I could see having specific ice powers in an AU like that would be Jordan. It would be offset by Connor having heat powers (not fire, just heat), because they’re two sides of the same coin.
9. Favorite holiday food?
Idk if this counts as an actual holiday food but DEVILED EGGS are all I care about at family dinners.
10. Fireside cuddling or playing in the snow? Why?
Can I choose both? Like, playing in the snow and then coming back in all cold and stripping down to the bottom layer of clothes to get dry, huddling under a blanket, and sitting in front of the fire to warm up. Ahh, it just sounds nice.
Makes me wish I had a fireplace.
If I have to choose between the two of them, I’d say Fireplace. I like being warm.
I’ll tag @breakeven2007 and @aureumtheory!
And here are my questions! I’m gonna generalize write/draw/makE ART to create for inclusivity.
Where’s your favorite place to create?
When did you start creating?
If there was a fighting tournament between your OCs, who would win? Who would refuse to participate?
Any New Year’s resolutions? How about your OCs?
Do you have a list of books you want to read? Is it long or short? What’s the next book on it?
What piece of work are you most proud of? If you can and want to, include and excerpt or picture!
Do you get any inspiration from music? If so, what kind?
Do you create better with or without caffeine in your system?
Have you ever spent a whole day creating, then looked up and realized you haven’t done anything else (including eat and drink water) in hours?
Do you collect anything? What? If not, is there anything you’ve thought about collecting?

11 questions
RULES 1. Always post the rules 2. Answer the questions given by the person who tagged you 3. Write 11 questions of your own 4. Tag 11 people (or however many you want)
my wonderful dad @somebodythinkoftheunicorns tagged me so here we go:
1. what is a field of study that you find unspeakably boring?
chemistry,,, that might just be my teacher tho,,, but yeah i give no shits about molecules,, also trigonometry,,,, blegh
2. what colour does your favourite song make you think of?
hmm well my favorite song is probably either thrash unreal or mama and both of them make me think of black??? sort of in a colorless way tho idk,,,
3. whats your favourite activity to do while on holiday?
I'm assuming this means vacation in american,,, my favorite part about trips to anywhere is always the long drive there,,, staring out the window watching the scenery flow and change while listening to my music is literally the perfect way to exist,,
4. do you like secondhand books?
yes ultimate aesthetic omg
5. do you believe in ghosts? do you wish you believed in ghosts? do you wish you didnt?
i don’t believe in ghosts but i don’t not believe in them either,, i believe in the Possibility of ghosts but i can’t truly believe anything like that until i see proof. love the idea of them tho
6. would you rather have a pet frog, a pet lizard or a pet kiwi (the bird)?
hmmm,, lizard? i know nothing about the care of any of those boys,,,
7. can you sew? if so, what do you make? if not, what would you make?
i’ve sewn in school before, i made a stuffed elephant and a messenger bag lmao,,, if i could focus enough to start sewing projects of my own i’d probably want to make my own clothes cuz i have super cool ideas for outfits,,, or less ambitiously i’d want to make embroidered patches.
8. whats a specific thing were you interested in as a child?
hmm,, i had a lot of weirdly specific phases of interest but probably the most influential on my later life was my obsession with norse mythology,,, i started drawing comics about the norse gods in fourth grade that continued for Years after and remain probably my most impressive body of work to date.
9. gold or silver? (colours, not metals)
hmmm,, both are good and they both go well with black so i dunno how to choose,,,
10. do you think visiting graveyards (i.e. not visiting a specific person’s grave) is disrespectful?
in terms of like hanging out in a graveyard,, logically, some people’s ghosts would think it is and some wouldn’t. i know if i was dead id totally want my grave to be the site of lots of adventures, but i bet there are some musty old dead people who wouldn’t like it,,, as far as the opinion of the living goes i don’t think it matters much and if the only thing stopping you is what some alive nobody says,,, then go for it, break into that cemetery,,, but also I'm pretty sure no ghost would object to a respectful, somber visit if you’re there to feel spiritual not just to chill. ,,,i dunno if any of that makes sense but,
11. if you were to receive one of those latex masks (like the horse head? you know the ones hopefully) for free, which one would you pick?
I've only ever seen the classic horse one and the unicorn,,, which is again, a hard choice. maybe the horse just for its Meme Power jdsjsdkj
hmm i’ll tag @qcrip, @inventingsongs, @metallicdeceiver, @midnightpunk, @parachutesfrank, @hauntedhousemd, @shiverpunk, @weenhand, @goodnaruto, @ghostparachutes, @spaghettilimbs if y'all want to :)
here’s 11 more questions:
1. do you like horror movies? if so are you more a fan of cheesy bad ones or do you try to find ones that are actually good?
2. if you had to come up with any random act for a talent show what would you perform?
3. do you have a go-to “fun fact” about yourself that you always use when you’re forced to play awkward ice breaker games?
4. do you have a more scientific, spiritual, or philosophical view of the world? or something else entirely?
5. do you like smaller or bigger venues better for concerts? assigned seats or GA?
6. if you became famous for one specific thing what would you like it to be?
7. if you had endless money to buy either clothes, makeup (including stage makeup, body paint, whatever), or haircuts/hair dye/hair products which one would you choose?
8. if you had to switch lives with a fictional character who would you switch with?
9. were you a gamer kid, a book kid, an outdoors kid, or something else?
10. would you rather have the ability to change the length of your hair at will, or the ability to change your height at will?
11. if you had a piece of paper with your death date written on it would you look at it? would you have someone else look at at? or would you just burn it?

2019 Ahead // It’s Twentybiteen, You Ready?
I’m back! Again!
Your fave chaotic disaster queer took time off once again to get her shit together! Did I???? Kinda???
I’m glad I took the time off, I needed that time and space to sort out and find balance in my life and did I???? Kinda???
So now I’m back! There are going to be a few changes! But I’ll go through that a little later in this post.
2018 was fucking hard man. It was maybe the worst year of my life so far which is not an easy feat, let me tell you!
I’m glad it’s over, I’m thankful for the lessons it gave me but more than anything I’m grateful for the foundation in providing for the next chapter of my life.
2019 so far has been just getting through the delayed effects of the last part of 2018 honestly. But I’m hopeful it’ll only get better from here.
TBR
So what are the books I plan to read this year?? Honestly too many but here are the books I definitely want to get to in 2019.
I was going to talk about my anticipated releases BUT literally, everyone has done that so it’s not like I’d be sharing new information with anyone. No shade! Y’all those lists are amazing and I love them because I am always behind on what is coming out. Those posts just aren’t for me personally to write. But mostly it’s because this year I am focusing on books I actually own and neglected all of last year while I was busy having a love affair with my library.
│The Raven Cycle│Maggie Stiefvater│
│
│
│
I read the first book in 2017 and then my mum bought me the whole series for my birthday in 2018 and do you think I’ve read them yet??? Of course not! So I want to this year for sure!
│Shadow and Bone Series│Leigh Bardugo│
│
I loved the Six of Crows duology and now that the Grishaverse is getting a Netflix series I have to read the first series! Undoubtedly I will probably reread the Six of Crows duology after.
│The Conqueror’s Saga│Kiersten White│
│
│
│
I loved the first book in this series and I’ve bought the other two books as soon as they came out but did I read them??? No.
│Montague Siblings│Mackenzi Lee│
│
│
│
I really enjoyed the first book in this series even though I was in a major reading slump and it heavily dampened my experience but I still enjoyed it so I’m looking to rereading it and then following it with the last book!
│Villains│VE Schwab│
│
│
│
I loved the first book and I can’t wait for the second one to come out. I ordered it in December but I entered my address wrong so I ended up going to my neighbour’s house to ask if they had it and they did!!!! Thank god for that!
I think I’ll wait to read them until I can get the paperbacks though since I like to annotate but not in my special editions.
│The Dark Artifices│Cassandra Clare│
│
│
│
I loved the first book so much and I meant to read Lord of Shadows asap but then didn’t??? Now I’m just waiting for the last book to come out in the small paperback so I can read the series start to finish.
│Harry Potter Series│JK Rowling│
│
│
│ I’m not putting LGBT rep because it’s not actually in the book and JK’s intentions don’t seem genuine to me.
The first time I read this series was 2011. And I didn’t finish it. So I’m gonna try again and watch the movies as I go to compare as well! And every time JK does some dumbass shit I am thankful I bought my copies secondhand.
│Sharp Objects│Gillian Flynn│
│
│
I fucking loved the TV series, it was so intense! I’m looking forward to reading the book!
│Sadie│Courtney Summers│
│
│
I’ve heard such good things and I need to read it but there’s a huge wait at the library and they do not have enough copies across the state library network so I might just end up buying it??
│Sawkill Girls│Claire Legrand│
│
│
I’m planning on reading this one this month if I can get a hold of it from the library!
│The Hate U Give│Angie Thomas│
│
│
I neeeeeed to read this one pronto!!!!
│Rejected Princesses│Jason Porath│
│
│
│
│Bygone badass Broads│Mackenzi Lee│
│
│
│
So I decided on my new Structured TBR each month (More info in my Month Ahead post!) I’m going to read a certain amount of entries in these each month over the year.
│Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda│Creekwood Series│Becky Albertelli│
│
│
I need to read the book for my fave romcom guys, I just have to.
│Children of Blood & Bone│Legacy of Orïsha #1│Tomi Adeyemi│
│
│
I literally bought this the day it came out and so, of course, I haven’t read it yet.
│City of Ghosts│Cassidy Blake #1│Victoria Schwab│
│
│
I have to read it, it’s a Schwab book. But I am pumped for it!!!
│Percy Jackson and the Olympians│Rick Riordan│
│
│
A childhood classic I never fucking read as a child. Also, I now own almost all or Riordan’s books because they were super cheap secondhand and so I have to read them.
Past Grey Reads
Book Review // Girl Made of Stars – I Am Broken
Book Review // Everything Leads To You – A Quite Love Story

Suki Waterhouse, Ryan Reynolds, Kathryn Newton│
When I first saw the trailer I legit thought it was a very cleverly put together fan trailer and died when I realised it was real.
│Aladdin│
│May 23│
Guy Ritchie│
Will Smith, Billy Magnussen, Naomi Scott│
I am so excited, it’s gonna be so magical!
│Rocketman│
│May 30│

I never knew I needed it but then I heard of it and then I watched the trailer and now I’m already a fan.
│Men in Black: International│
│Jun 13│

Rebecca Ferguson, Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson│
This movie is for the bisexuals.
│Spider-Man: Far From Home│
│Jul 4│
Jon Watts│
Zendaya, Jake Gyllenhaal, Cobie Smulders│
Okay blogging secret, when it comes to the directors, creators and stars of this segment I always just copy and paste from IMDB because I’m lazy and can we just appreciate the fact that Tom Holland—the literal star of the movie, the person who plays the main character—isn’t even listed at the top as part of the top stars.
Also, I’m very excited to watch this. Tom and Zendaya are my children and they must be protected at all costs.
│It: Chapter 2│
│Sep 5│
Andy Muschietti│
James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Bill Skarsgård│
I’m ready for adult loser club thanks.
│Star Wars: Episode IX│

I’m always happy with a new Star Wars film.

│
Susan Johnson│
Lana Condor, Noah Centineo│
YES YES YES YES YES.
│Brooklyn Nine-Nine│Season 6│
│Jan 10│
Daniel J. Goor, Michael Schur│
Andre Braugher, Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz│
I’m so glad NBC saved this!!!!
│One Day At A Time│Season 3│
│Feb 8│
Gloria Calderon Kellett, Mike Royce│
Justina Machado, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez│
This is probably mine and mum’s fave sitcom that makes us piss ourselves laughing but also makes us sob.
│Game of Thrones│Season 8│
│Apr 14│
David Benioff, D.B. Weiss│
Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington│
I won’t make it to the end of 2019, not because of depression
but because I’m going to die while watching this, I know it.
│Stranger Things│Season 3│
│Jul 4│
Matt Duffer, Ross Duffer│
Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Winona Ryder│
I just want the gang together and happy.
│Mindhunter│Season 2│
│
Joe Penhall│
Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, Anna Torv│
I gotta watch it and live text my thoughts to my aunt who is hugely into true crime (so much so that she is studying criminology). Because I’m hilarious and also I know she’ll appreciate it and also I no longer have a best friend to do this shit with.
│Big little Lies│Season 2│
│
David E. Kelley│
Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley│
Big Little Lies rocked my world and made me realise I actually like thrillers.
│RuPaul’s Drag Race UK│Season 1│
│
I’m just excited to see what a season would look like that isn’t hosted and judged by RuPaul.
Past Grey Watches
Grey Watches // I Wanna Bone Jude Law and Kate Winslet – The Holiday
Grey Watches // It Has To Be A Shit Show – A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding
Grey Watches // I Hate It So Much I Love It – A Christmas Prince
Yes I know I said I wouldn’t change the appearance of my blog while I was gone but we all know I’m a dirty liar.
Besides, it’s only some small tweaks here and there and I won’t be going back through my past posts to edit everything to match. A year of posts is too many. I promised myself and my mum I wouldn’t do it again.
This year I’m going to be posting less! Like half the amount I did last year.
Last year I eventually got to a schedule of four posts a week and this year I will be doing two.
I’m doing this for a couple of reasons.
I exercise and eat healthy now and it turns out those two things take up so much time.
I wanna start actually dedicating time to working on my new WIP and maybe have a draft by the end of the year????
I’m planning on doing more Grey Watches post this year, and my book review posts will now be called Grey Reads and I might try and do more discussion posts called Grey Speaks and maybe WIP writing updates in Grey Writes??? It’s all about that branding.
But who knows what I’ll do, honestly I don’t even know myself! I’m terrible with follow through but we’ll see!
My Ancient Archive posts will be moved to once every two months as well because those posts take ages and as much as I love them I just don’t have that kind of time. And they’ll also get a rename—Grey Learns
I was also going to start requesting physical ARCs from publishers but ahhhh turns out I don’t actually enjoy writing reviews??? And there’s always the risk that I’m not gonna like it and I’ll feel obligated to finish it and I don’t have time for that either so I’m not doing that, I’ll be requesting far, far less from Netgalley.
I’ll be posting book reviews roughly once or twice a month, instead of once a week. I’ll still be writing reviews for all the books I read but they’ll be a lot shorter and I’ll mostly just post them on my Goodreads.
If you notice I am reading a book you wanna see a review of over on here, let me know and I’ll be sure to post it!
Past Month In Review
Month in Review // Christmas is Over Thank Fuck – December
Month in Review // November – I Already Hate Christmas
Month in Review // July, August, September & October – New Post Series!
Goals
Get to a point where I walk 10000 steps a day.
On the reg, like every day for the most part. At the moment I just have my step goal as 8000 a day because small steps literally.
But I hit my first 10000 steps on the 16th of last month so that was very exciting for me especially since it was on the day I don’t go for a walk and proved why that is my day off because it’s my shopping day so I’m clearly walking plenty, to begin with!
Find a way to be more financially stable somehow.
Whether that be by a full-time job or maybe work out a way to get paid for doing what I love??
I don’t know. I’m trying to be more open to different paths to get to a place I want to be.
Also, it seems like I may be forced into this sooner rather than later thanks to things out of my control so that’s exciting but also terrifying because ANXIETY.
Finish a draft for my WIP.
Have I started writing it yet? Absolutely not but I’m gonna try!
And I’m very excited about the concept. Think queer banshees and witches and strong women and girls supporting each other. That’s the plan.
Read 50 books.
I read 100 last year and 130 the year before that but with focusing on writing and my health I feel that trying to keep reading that many books is just going to stress me out so I’m not doing it!
Also, I’m already struggling to get through a book a week right now and I need to if I have any hope of just reading 50.
Legally change my name FINALLY!
And guess what guys that one is very close to being complete!
I’ve submitted to the paperwork and now it’s just the waiting for it to get approved and then I can pick up my new birth certificate!
I’ve been waiting for this moment for years so I’m very excited!
Continue going to therapy.
I’m in a much better mental space than I was last year but I still need therapy. Especially since last year was basically just me venting about how fucked up my family is and this year is about me so I want to use my therapy to focus on my shit, get official diagnoses and maybe testing out medication???
Also find a better way to deal with my paranoia because guys, it’s been especially rough lately.
Take regular mental health days
This is much needed!!!!!
And by mental health days I mean spend one whole day doing nothing but maybe watching Netflix and reading and crying if I need to.
My mum and I don’t really stop and so we get hit with emotions at really inconvenient times so I’m hoping that if we schedule a day where we can allow ourselves to be emotional then it might help?
I want to aim for once a month but we’ll see.
Play more video games.
Because they’re fun and I like them and I keep telling myself I don’t have time because it’s not important but fuck important, sometimes you just gotta do shit because it’s fun and pointless.
Past Month Ahead

How To Build A Better Feedback Culture
If you’ve ever felt your blood pressure rise at the mention of feedback, or felt stressed out at the prospect of delivering it, then you’ll realize how feedback has become a dirty word. Too many of us associate it with punishment, self-doubt, awkward conversations or office power plays. And even when feedback is positive, it can be frustratingly unclear or unhelpful. As a result, our brains have been programmed to have negative psychological and even physical reactions to feedback situations.
But it doesn’t have to be that way! At its most basic, feedback is information and insights that should help us grow. Understanding how others see us and taking advice from our colleagues and bosses are both crucial to our development in the workplace.
So the time has come for us all to make an effort to build a better feedback culture. And, thankfully, it’s relatively easy to do so, once you understand why you have a negative reaction to feedback and can arm yourself with practical tips for a better approach. To find out how to shift your mindset, and to learn how to seek, receive and give feedback better, read on.
Feedback’s brand has taken a hit, but it’s an invaluable source of improvement and growth.
You stroll into work, ready to face the day. Just as you sit down, your boss pops her head out her office door: “I’ve got some feedback for you. Please come into my office.”
For lots of us, just hearing this is enough to set our hearts racing. Our palms sweat and our legs feel numb as we cross the floor to the boss’s office. Thoughts race through the mind: What have I done? Did I screw something up?
Of course, it’s likely that the feedback is innocuous or even positive. So why do we have such an anxious, immediate and forceful reaction to the offer of it?
Feedback has been consistently mishandled. Bad leaders use it to punish or manipulate staff, using brutal frankness with no regard for employee morale. Even good bosses hoard feedback, positive and negative, and then dump it all at once on unsuspecting employees at annual performance reviews.
And it’s not just givers at fault. There’s probably been a time in your life when you’ve gotten defensive in response to feedback, argued the facts, or fought back with a tirade about someone else’s failings.
But this is unfortunate, because feedback, effectively delivered, drives meaningful improvements in business performance.
A 2018 study explored the impact of multiple techniques used in 57 companies in the US to improve performance management. It found the biggest driver of measurable improvement in performance was building a Performance Feedback Culture, in which managers are trained in how to give feedback and incentivized to do so. Unsurprisingly, managers in such cultures provide regular and attentive feedback. The financial gains of the one-third of companies that were best at giving feedback were double those of the one-third that was worst for feedback. Furthermore, the study found that good feedback was the management practice most strongly correlated with employee motivation.
Still need convincing of feedback’s value? Consider that, despite feedback’s bad rep, the most common complaint that experts hear in their lives as management consultants is that people don’t get enough of it. A 2018 global study of employee engagement led by Officevibe found that a full 62 percent of workers wanted more feedback, and 83 percent appreciated it, whether it was positive or negative.
People want good feedback, and developing a good feedback culture makes sense for any organization. But before we can build such a culture, we first need to understand why we are currently getting things wrong.
Feedback can seem threatening and often triggers anxiety and stress.
So why, exactly, do we get so worked up about the prospect of feedback? The answer lies in our brains and our evolutionary past.
If you’ve had negative feedback experience in the past, then an offer of feedback – even one that later turns out to be positive – will kick off what’s known as a fear response in the primitive part of our brain, the amygdala. That response is an evolutionary adaptation to perceived threats. It was helpful, even essential, thousands of years ago – if you saw a saber-toothed tiger coming, your fear response would trigger a wave of reactions. Your face would flush, and your mouth would dry out as blood was diverted to arms and legs, readying you to run. Your heartbeat would accelerate, pumping blood to fuel action.
Today, however, it’s profoundly unhelpful when it kicks in in response to something like an offer of feedback. Recalling past negative experiences of feedback, your amygdala responds. Suddenly your body and mind go into overdrive. Primed for survival, reason and emotional control go out the window. The result? You are unlikely to recognize, appreciate or properly process any of the feedback your boss tries to give, however reasonable it is.
So if you find yourself with heart racing and palms sweating, what can you do to keep yourself level-headed and ready to process feedback properly?
Well, one great way to stay calm is to give attention to your body. Our brain can only be active in one of its parts at once. Onset of the “fight, flight or freeze” mode comes from brain activity in the amygdala, or the primitive brain. However, focusing consciously on your physical sensations, like the feeling of your feet on the floor, requires your prefrontal cortex, or your wise brain, to be engaged. Deliberately focusing on your physical body is a great way to dampen that primitive, scary brain behavior.
So if you find yourself getting stressed out, try the relaxation technique known as 4-7-8 breathing. Inhale silently through your nose, counting to four. Then hold your breath for seven seconds, which will slow your heart rate and help you relax. And then exhale for eight seconds.
Of course, while helpful in the moment, this technique won’t solve the problem in the longer term. For that, we all need to embrace better approaches to feedback.
To grow, we need clear and specific feedback and a growth mindset.
If we want to change feedback for the better, then we need a new definition – a vision, even – for how feedback should be.
Feedback should be defined as information that is both specific and clear, and that is either given or sought exclusively to help people or groups grow or improve.
Let’s unpack that a little. Firstly, feedback needs to be specific and clear. Feedback like, “Just keep doing what you’re doing,” or “Watch what Janie in sales is doing, and follow that” is no real help to anyone. Clear information is the best way to inspire action.
Secondly, feedback should not just be given, but also sought out. To benefit from feedback truly, we can’t just wait for it: we need to ask for it. And finally, feedback should be entirely focused on aiding growth. Why bother offering it if not to help someone develop or change? Feedback should never be used as a weapon, or to demonstrate power, but always with the purpose of helping someone improve.
Something that can help you change your attitude to feedback is to adopt a growth mindset. Dr. Carol Dweck, a psychologist at Stanford University, has written that people with a fixed mindset believe their inherent qualities, like intelligence or talent, are fixed traits, and as a result, they don’t invest in developing them. Those with a growth mindset, however, see talent just as a starting point, and embrace both a passion for learning and mental resilience. Dweck’s research found that those with a fixed mindset ignored negative feedback, even if it was useful, whereas those with a growth mindset sought feedback, and regarded criticism as a learning experience.
The more you can adopt a growth mindset, the more likely you are to be comfortable with feedback, and the more you can learn from it. So try to be alert to how you are responding to challenges in the workplace.
If you find yourself saying, “I cannot do this,” try to remind yourself that you just can’t do this yet. Comparing yourself negatively with your colleague Sarah’s people skills? Make a commitment to ask Sarah for some networking tips, and remind yourself that improving in this area could bring real results.
Connection, trust and taking notice are the essential foundations of a positive feedback culture.
To build anything that’s durable, you need stable foundations. A positive feedback culture is no exception.
The first step to building the foundation of a better feedback culture is to connect with people, since listening to them and understanding them drives trust. And trust is vitally important to feedback. We pay little attention to feedback from people we don’t trust, and a lot of attention to feedback from people we do. So invest time in really connecting with your colleagues. Spend focused time with them, and when you do, make sure your head is in the game, and make an effort to consider their viewpoints and their ideas positively, without judging them.
If you need a little nudge in the right direction, try to follow the 5:1 ratio established by renowned marriage therapist Dr. John Gottman. He found that the key to a happy, stable relationship was for a couple to have at least five positive interactions with each other for each negative interaction. Translating this to the workplace, consider how much better your coworker relationships would be if you dramatically stepped up the ratio of positive connections with each other.
The next step is simple, but hugely important. It’s noticing. Noticing is observing things or people as they are, without judgment or emotion. What does this mean in practice, and in the context of feedback? Well, it means that instead of waiting for an annual performance review to gather observations secondhand, we are always tuned in and paying attention. It means that we focus on the present moment, and as a result can always share clear, factual insights with our colleagues. As a result, the quality of our feedback conversations will be transformed. Previously you might have said, “Hey, I’m pretty disappointed. We had an agreement to get that done on time.” But when you practice noticing, you focus simply on details that you have observed, instead of focusing on blame or judgment. So instead, you might say, “So the tracking details show we were four hours behind on Friday. I believe we had an agreement that you would give me a heads up on any delays; is that correct?”
When you practice noticing, your ability to give helpful, regular feedback will increase dramatically. Do this, and you’ll notice the true, positive power that feedback can have. But some of us will need to go and actively seek feedback, so let’s consider how best to do that.
Seekers of feedback should be specific, and seek multiple sources.
If you want your performance to improve, then stop waiting for feedback, and ask for it. If you do, it’s likely that you’ll see results. In a recent Forbes article, leadership consultant Jack Zenger talked about how research shows that organizations that embrace asking for feedback, rather than simply giving it, see better performance and stronger teams.
So why not kick-start a step toward a better feedback culture in your organization by seeking out feedback for yourself? Here are a few tips on how you can become a great seeker.
First, make sure that your ask is focused. Research shows that feedback givers are likely to get stressed out if we ask them something broad, like “Can you tell me how I’m doing at the moment?” A better approach is to be as specific as possible. If you have a big presentation coming up, and you know that sometimes your delivery can waver, you could say to your manager, “When I present to marketing today, could you keep an eye on my body language and audience eye contact? I’m a little concerned that I’m pacing too much, and not connecting.” That gives your feedback provider a nice, clearly defined request, and in turn gives you actionable and specific information, rather than some general comments about how your presentation turned out.
Second, think about how you can get your feedback from multiple, diverse sources. That’s because the more sources of feedback you can gather, the more you’ll learn. And if those sources are diverse, you are more likely to get a fair picture of your performance than if you’d just listened to one manager. Her perspective may be valuable, but it is just one perspective, after all.
So think about who else could give you useful feedback. A great but often overlooked source of honest feedback is our immediate peer group. All too often, when we seek feedback, we seek it from our managers or leaders. But your peers are probably the people who know you best, working with you day by day and seeing both your best and your worst sides.
A recent study by recognition solutions provider Globoforce found that peer-to-peer recognition is almost 36 percent more likely to affect financial results positively than manager-employee recognition alone. When we bring everyone into the feedback conversation, we benefit from a richer chorus of voices.
Ask the right questions and keep control of your emotional response to make the most out of feedback you receive.
Even if you’re the one receiving feedback, it doesn’t mean that you can just sit back and listen. You also have work to do if you want to get the most out of the situation.
The good news is that there’s an easy way you can make sure that every feedback session really works for you – you just need to ask the right questions.
For example, if you feel like you are getting too many vague, woolly statements, ask for specifics. Try asking, “Could you share an example of when you noticed this?” And don’t be shy to ask about the impact of the behavior in question. Asking, “Could you explain the impact that had on the team?” is a great way to get to the bottom of why you might need to change a behavior. On the other hand, sometimes feedback givers complicate things by covering too many issues at once. Asking, “What’s the single thing I should be doing more of?” is a great way to help your feedback provider gently come to clarity.
But often when we receive feedback, we let our emotional reaction to the feedback cloud our perceptions of the giver’s intentions. When your manager clumsily calls you out on a PowerPoint typo in front of the rest of the team, you assume she wants to embarrass you in front of your colleagues, because that’s how you feel. In reality, she probably had no idea it would touch a nerve, and just wanted to let you know so you could correct it for next time.
A great way of avoiding this trap is always to assume that your feedback givers have positive intent and that the person to whom you are talking is trying to help, not harm.
There will, however, still be times when feedback is hard to hear. And that can be really unhelpful, because one single negative thought can often take over our brains, pushing anything positive out of the picture. Psychologist Susan Nolen-Hoeksema has shown that when a single stressor kicks in, the resulting bad feelings unlock a wave of other, often unrelated, negative thoughts.
So if one tough piece of feedback kick-starts a downward emotional spiral, regain control by asking yourself a few questions. What is true about what you heard? What do you think is biased? And, crucially, how can you use this to progress? Reflecting carefully on these questions will help you shift from punishment to progress.
Knowing yourself and focusing on frequent, bite-sized bits of information is the way to give truly valuable feedback.
Maybe you pride yourself on being straightforward and frank. Well, that might feel like harshness to someone more sensitive. So let’s take a look at the last step of a good feedback process: getting to know yourself. Because your own personality, approach to working life and communication style influence the feedback you give.
So make sure you reflect on how you do things, and understand that sometimes you might need to adjust your tone or your approach.
You should also make sure you are absolutely clear about your intentions when you go to give feedback. That’s because sometimes our reasons fall short of our goal: to help other people. If you are feeling angry about a missed deadline, or bruised from a badly performing project, and wanting to share a little blame, stop for a second. Ask yourself, Why am I really giving feedback? Is it to help this individual’s growth? Or am I really doing this for my own purposes?
So now you’ve got the right attitude. What practical steps can you take to make your feedback top-notch? Well, a good way forward is to focus on giving frequent, bite-sized insights.
The more frequently we share, the more all of us learn. A study of schoolchildren showed that their learning was more effective, and their performance better, when they received feedback before, during and after a learning process, instead of just afterward. It seemed to give them time and space to reflect on their new learnings as they absorbed them. Well, we adults are no different – and, according to experts, research suggests that giving informal feedback at least every two weeks is best.
Maybe you are thinking, “Heck, I don’t have time for feedback sessions every two weeks!” Well, the good news is that you can keep things bite-sized. Try to give just one suggestion or goal that the receiver can focus on. All of us are bombarded by millions of pieces of information each day, so our processing capacity is at its limits. Keeping things small and manageable seriously increases the chances your feedback will be acted upon. And remember that the easiest way to start is by simply noticing all the great things that are happening around you, and feeding back to your coworkers what a positive impact they are having.
So here’s one final piece of advice: spread more positive feedback. According to leadership consultant Jack Zenger, research shows that managers are actually less effusive and have less impact when it comes to sharing good feedback than they think they are. So even if you think you are giving out positive feedback, give a little more.
For too many of us, feedback is a dirty word. When we think of feedback, we think of something gruesome. But it doesn’t have to be. When it’s done right, feedback can be the best driver of personal and business growth. By learning to make feedback frequent, fair and focused, we can minimize the fear and anxiety we feel about it, and turn it into a positive force for improvement.

The Strix is the 1st of this breed to land on Engadget's review desk. With a score of 6,135 in VRMark's "Orange Space" benchmark (and 1,640 in the more intensive "Blue Space" encounter), the GL502VS is certainly a VR-capable gaming Pc. It can run pretty significantly every little thing obtainable in today's customer virtual reality market. It can not, nonetheless, play all those VR games at their highest fidelity. Well, even although, your old laptops are not employed any longer, you never have to throw them away. Why do not you provide them to people, who repair laptops? Possibly, they will want any repair components? This is, of course, if you never plan to use them any longer and require to figure out one thing to get rid of them. 5/25/17
hold on i need some motivating tunes before i type this blog out.
okay got’em.
today i finally decided to write a blog. i really should have the past few days but just didn't and that makes me a bad person but I'm okay with that.
quick summary of past few days: hung out with besties, left reno, came to vegas, played with puppies, hung out with joey, talked the past 3 months of soccer with my dad, watched manchester united win the europa league final, was stoked, watched logan and gera play indoor at longevity, got a smoothie, played basketball at sunset park, missed the hoop and obliterated my smoothie with the ball, was sad.
okay so so so today.
I finally turned off my alarms that i had set for school all semester. like it took me a whole week and then some of having my alarm wake me up at 7 am/8 am. but tbf the reason i hadn't turned them off yet is because I was usually up anyways by then lol. whether it be by my internal alarm clock or rocky licking my face or having to pee or whatevs.
i had a bagel this morning. an asiago bagel. asiago (or other cheese variation) bagels are forever the best don’t @ me. i watched first take and listened to tv personalities say the same secondhand opinions they say every single day about LeBron and Steph Curry and Johnny Manziel and Odell Beckham Jr. and Chris Paul and etc etc. Also, it just began to hit me how gross it is that they don’t discuss soccer at ALL. Not a single mention of the 5th most valuable sports franchise in the world winning the Europa League and making it back into the Champions League. Not a single word about the final of this years FA Cup, the 5th oldest current sporting competition (only behind an archery thing, two boating competitions, and a golfing thing). I actually didn't know there was four older competitions, but c’mon, 1871, that’s fucking old. Or the Coupe De France, DFB Pokal, Copa Italia, Copa Del Rey. Or god forbid they talk about that one lil thing that has just a couple (try 2.5x) as many viewers as the super bowl, the Champions League Final?????
idk im salt. i should chill. where’d my music go
vegas is hot
satans butthole is hot
same thing
i went to town square with bags and kyle. they made me drive, fuckers. jk I'm fine with driving cause that means i get control of the aux and that’s my rightful place in life. bags broke the screen of his iPod this semester (okay but rly who owns iPods anymore) and he was gonna try to get it replaced. they didn't replace it. they needed like $99 from him to replace it. he said “fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucc no.” I went iPad by iPad, iPhone by iPhone, and loaded up my YouTube channel and left it open. we walked around for a bit got bored, realized we weren't 13 anymore and couldn't legitimately entertain ourselves by just walking around a mall, and did what you have to do on any town square trip.
walked into guitar center and played around with cool, expensive music stuffs. starting with the keyboards, swiftly moving to the synths and drum machines. okay okay they almost never have the vocoder microphones attached to the synths, but they did and i had so much fun with them lol. then bags and kyle got bored and left me while they went to explore elsewhere. after a while this guy seemed like he was actually wanting to buy something (he said he was from brazil) so i decided not to be a hassle and went on my way. but i was dropping them hot beats before i left. tell kendrick to hmu. maybe even drake. not j cole. or big sean. or like macklemore. then i found my way over to the electronic drums and this dude was straight jammin. so i sit down at the one at the other end from him and start jamming along to the songs he’s playing. (he was playing these neat little instrumental songs of all different genres and kinda just jamming along) so i sit down, find a tone i like and just sit there drumming with him. (I'm actually not a horrendous drummer for someone who’s not a drummer, i just absolutely cannot do bass drum kicks with my foot while I'm trying to focus on my upper body) i have no idea how to get the hang of that.
then we got food. and i came home and spent the entire afternoon/evening watching the sports balls. first the cavs taking a polite dump on the celtics’ collective chest. and then watching Chivas play fantastically in the first 85 minutes, but throw the entire game away in the final 5 minutes in the first leg of the Liga MX final.
aw my fish looks like he’s dancing.
s/o to joey and mum for feeding him everyday when I'm gone.
glad he’s not dead.
i wore my pulisic jersey today. that kid is gonna be something special.
ALEX BOUGHT REAL SHOES. well kinda.
we’ve been roasting bags about not ever owning a pair of non-running shoes for a while recently. cause idk, i’ve always cared about what I'm wearing, but it’s gotten to an even higher level and i think i’ve rubbed off on my friends a bit. so yeah we’ve roasted bags and he finally bought a pair of vans. I'm proud of him BUT NOT TOO PROUD. They’re like the runner-style vans that kinda look like running shoes. You probably aren't supposed to run in them, but they’re styled to look like runners. Kinda like a casual runner. Like Roshes or NMD’s or other style/casual shoes that have the runner aesthetic but probably should not be run in. but yeah s/o bags. WAIT ANOTHER PROBLEM. instead of getting a nice black or navy or maybe even a shoe that pops a lil but can be matched with, he got some fucking olive, hawaiian floral thing that he will never actually match with and it just makes me cringe a tiny bit. i’ll be ok i promise.
i sound really douchey in that last paragraph. i promise i’m only half serious about all those things. well i mean i do think he needs to not wear runners, but i’m glad he got something he likes and is comfortable for him and fits his style.
i should vlog one of these days.
this blog was brought to you by, boobs.
