yj fixes bc i'm an obnoxious pos who thinks they know better than professional showrunners

as always, nothing but love and good will to everyone who doesn't have any major problems with the plots/arcs/pacing of the show, i'm legit happy for you, go with god

buttttt there a lot of things about the structure of yj that don't work for me and i've got too much time on my hands so here's some things i would have liked to happen/not happen

foreshadow the howling

the biggest thing to take me out of it was the howling during hunts. both during the doomcoming travis hunt and the proper hunt at the end of s2 this just struck me as extremely silly. I think it would have worked much better if the idea of the yellowjackets howling at victorious moments was established. maybe we could see some of them howling after the states win, or maybe it could become a tradition to howl with joy whenever nat and travis bring home food.

2. no hunt in s2 finale

sorry but this felt so premature to me, like we've still got 2 or 3 more seasons left and we're already at the shirley jackson lottery phase? imo the core hook of the whole show, right from the first episode, is: how do we reconcile the regular teenage girls of the locker room scenes with the pagan cannibal cult of the pit girl scenes. That tension that is always in the back of your mind as a viewer was basically ruined for me by the hunt of 2.09. And it just felt so unearned.

my solution for this would be, instead of KILLING THEIR MOST DEDICATED CONTRIBUTOR to sustain lottie, everybody bleeds themselves into a bowl to make a blood punch for lottie (and the others) to drink. blood is actually pretty nourishing and the symbolism o this scene i think would be pretty powerful, especially if we see them doing all the normal lottie wilderness woo woo rites around it *even though lottie isn't' there*. i think this would be a much more measured beat in the arc of the yellowjackets.

3. adam martin lives

this is not related to the general pacing of the main storyline but i just think it was a creative misstep to kill him. it really cheapened his role in shauna's story for me, and i kinda hate how it ended up just being treated as a joke and how shauna doesn't even seem to gaf about it. plus it added a whole lot of unnecessary busywork to the adult timeline.

4. Laura Lee lives

This one i think just inherently makes the show more interesting, from the moment we met laura lee i was so excited to see how her faith would interact with the horrors of survival and whether or not she would eat jackie, and the fact that she just went boom and that was that really bummed me out. Like, imagine what an incredible friends to (lovers? to) nemeses story we could have had with her and lottie, with laura lee torn between her love for lottie/her desire to save her soul and the realization that she can't. killing laura lee so early seems like a really obvious missed opportunity.

5. show the fallout of doomcoming

i've been over this before and i won't natter on about it but, again, there was so much obvious interesting drama that was just ignored by the 2 month time jump between seasons 1 and 2. we don't really see anybody but shauna deal with jackie's death and their complicity in it (esp travis,), we don't see anybody apologize to travis for trying to fucking kill him (looking at you shauna), we don't see anybody confront misty over poisoning them. ig jakcie was right. we really are just gonna not talk about it.

I could probably go on but i'm sure you're all bored enough by now lol.

in memory of Jackie Taylor, i do want to say something nice as well. The aesthetic, costuming and production is consistently fantastic -- the antler queen is honestly such a fucking iconic design, i can't believe nobody's done it before. The cast are incredible, the music slaps and i think by and large the show's character writing and theming is phenomenal. In particular, the story of Jackie and Shauna is fucking PERFECT tv, perfectly paced, perfectly acted, not a scene or line or silent glance is out of place. For that plot alone yj deserved the emmy.

I hope I don't come off as attacking, bc that's not my intention at all. This all comes from a place of love and hyperfixation, and once again, i have nothing but respect for those who disagree. I just had to get this all of my chest ig <3

favorite thing about them

god i was hoping someone would ask aizawa for this but also. picking one fave thing is so so hard

this is kind of cheating but my fave thing might be...contrasts. like how in so much of his screentime he's lazing around, so languid and barely present, and then when needed he explodes into motion with this insane fighting style that's clearly the product of years and years of hard work. and how he has his whole strict teacher thing where he is harsh and scares kids on purpose, but is also capable of this incredible gentleness - the overhaul arc alone has so many examples, him with ochako & mirio & izuku...argh. his flat neutral monotone that then makes it so impactful when it breaks, like when he finds out about shirakumo/kurogiri and there's this incredible rage. i love that he's easy to interpret as kind of a hypocrite! it's extremely fun to play with in fic. i love that iconic all might line in the ep where aizawa's introduced - in your own strange way you're a very kind man, aizawa - and like that's...that's the thing. the kind and the strange. you've gotta have both for it to feel like aizawa

hmmm i was gonna say the fact that he is a relatively minor character in this anime, but i wonder if he'd have quite the same impact for me if there wasn't that space to kind of read around the canon moments?

so i guess maybe the ways he falls victim to other flaws in the logic of the show, its biases and faults...mineta is a big one. i actually kind of hate the scenes where aizawa kind of offhand scolds/warns mineta for stuff bc it's so...inadequate. and kind of more damning than if he was never shown responding to it at all. but as with everything else concerning mineta i find it's best to just ignore it entirely

i just adore this encapsulation of the strange kindness embedded in his weird teaching philosophy. and maybe my favourite thing in this show is how it grapples over and over again with the intersection of self-sacrifice and self-destruction (even if for me it's maybe better at asking these questions than answering them).

it's also just very satisfying to have been writing aizawa having this exact perspective for years and then seeing it laid out so simply. there is a difference. and he's dedicating his life to trying to teach it to these kids.

uhhhhhh. i don't know how many of my aizawa opinions are truly unpopular. i guess...i often see in fics him referring to his kids as stuff like hellions/hell class to their face. which i get bc i think it probs started out in more lighthearted crack fics etc and then spread through fanon. but I was surprised in rewatch by how formal and at times polite he is to the kids, like he's blunt but I think his variation of strictness precludes that kind of thing. behind their backs...possibly

i accidentally scrolled really far back in my notes app the other day and found a bunch of notes-form fic from 2018ish, one of which included a note at the end reading "loving present mic is lgbt culture bc complicated relationship with self-performance and artifice and also have you seen the way he dresses" and honestly. i stand by it

hmmmm i think a lot of the time he gets kind of morphed into this profoundly well-adjusted dude to play off aizawa, and i don't necessarily object to that! i've arguably done it myself. and it's part of the comedy of taking these two weirdos and deciding they have a profoundly functional domestic relationship off-screen.

but i find it interesting to consider the inverse too - with his rage, especially. one of his earliest scenes is him suggesting using his quirk on a bunch of random journalists (maybe as a joke but...hm). and there's a line about what he's gonna do to the people responsible for making nomu that made me go "MIC. BUD" out loud to my screen. i think it's entirely possible he has dealt emotionally with...nothing, ever.

aha this one might be very unpopular, but of all the stuff all might gets criticised for from the early eps, i actually get him telling mido he can't be a hero the most...it's definitely still bad! but i can really see it from his POV...like he's basically been fighting a war for decades. and for like 5 years he's been doing it basically alone, the people in his life unwilling to watch him do this to himself anymore. and it feels so necessary and vital and also he can feel his ability to do it draining more and more everyday, this awareness that any day now he might fall and leave a space for all that darkness to sweep back in...i feel like if any teenager, any child, looked at you and asked if they could head out onto that battlefield too, without even the weapon you've relied so heavily on...no is a really understandable answer! not a good answer, but very explicable in character terms at least

hey, i don't mind!

first off i think boy meets world in the context of just a purely heterosexual show makes it age pretty poorly, and that all stems from cory and topanga. i know one of the writers said a while back that the writers room was torn between shory and corpanga, and tbh, rewatching as an adult, that's extremely evident. i'm not gonna make this post all about shory bc that's reductive but i am first and formost a shory girl and a firm believer that cory matthews is a gay man

so let's get into it.

i really really love s1/2 corpanga. idk if it's just bc ben/danielle felt more natural back then or if it's bc they actually allowed cory to be wrong and topanga to be right, but it's just so sweet. one of my all time fav ship moments from the show is the frickin sock basketball scene where they touch hands and he giggles. so adorable! but i think what really makes them suffer after s1 (and kind of s2) is just that they clearly made topanga a normal, kelly kapowski girl-next-door type to make her more "desirable" for the male audience. that could be an entire separate post, but it's so fucking obvious that that's what the change was and it sucks because topanga was great the way she was.

they're not like hatable in season 3 exactly, but the "old married couple haha look how old gross and boring they are" trope when they were legitimately sophomores was just weird? and this is a retrospect thing but i hate how the show just kept retconning shit and pretended they never broke up in season 3, as if a HUGE storyline and one of the most iconic episodes (the happiest place on earth) wasn't about them getting back together? and for me just the concept of the ~universe wanting them to be together~ over and over again is just so fucking lame when they were so toxic. (great video on this here)

they really don't do anything wrong in season 4 either, but a long walk to pittsburgh is honestly so beyond ridiculous LMAO. i know everyone talks about how romantic it is, but i hate it because topanga literally runs away and moves back to philly just for cory. i know they claim it's to finish at john adams too, but i would find that much more believable if they had developed topanga AT ALL outside of cory. we know almost nothing about her home life and they wrote trini out so we never even see any friends of hers! the trend of them fighting and talking down to amy about their love is so fucking stupid too. like you are sixteen. it is fine to love someone and want to be with someone, but amy is right that it's not healthy for them to be as obsessed with each other as they are. like cory literally doesn't know who he is outside of topanga and that's NOT healthy.

oh lordy. s5. i'm not going to get into how much i hate that shawngela (a MUCH happier, more interesting relationship) was reduced to "wanting to be corpanga" in both their intro episode and then fucking gmw, but even the "old married couple" stuff in "chasing angela" at the restaurant is so annoying. "last tango in philly" is one of my fav episodes, but it's the perfect example of how cory can never accept he's wrong. shawn tries to tell him they should stop, and he just tells shawn he knows nothing about relationships and keeps being a dick about topanga and her (obviously gay) friend. but obviously, you're here to hear about how i feel about the cheating. yes, cory cheated and he genuinely liked lauren. for the show to act like he didn't is just gaslighting their audience. and tbh? i think ben and linda cardellini had excellent chemistry (certainly more than he and danielle did at that point . . .) and i think it's completely healthy to date more than one person! it was nice seeing cory be able to open up and bond with someone else, and yes, what he did was cheating. just bc he changed his mind and decided he "couldn't live without topanga" (bless u probably queer writer for what u did w that line :') ) doesn't mean that it didn't happen. topanga had EVERY right to break up with him. it does piss me off that we barely saw topanga's reaction to the breakup when there was a whole ep dedicated to shawn's reaction (and i say that as the #1 shawn stan), but that show hated women lbfr. AND WHY TF WAS IT BAD FOR HER TO KISS JONATHAN JACKSON WHEN SHE AND CORY WERE BROKEN UP????? bc cory can't accept things not going his way and not having control. the "we are a masterpiece" scene makes me so fucking angry omg i cannot

and i mean, bro, the yale shit has been talked about to death, but topanga lawrence going to the same college as straight d-student shawn hunter has got to be the dumbest, most woman-hating shit the show ever did. love can survive long distance if you put the effort in, trust me. (yes i am aware that the show prob didn't want to separate their main couple, but s6 was almost entirely about shawn anyway so????)

then in seasons 6 and 7 we get into the "cory yelling at and publicly humiliating topanga" trend. "undapants" is iconic so i'm not gonna go into that episode (fuck you "take her back to your tornado infested trailer park" line!), but i can name at least seven occasions where cory pressures her into sex. and rider strong is right. it was extremely holier than thou how they constantly made it seemed like corpanga was better than shawngela for not fucking before marriage. like isn't there a line where they call shawngela sluts in s7? the whole honesty bit in "the truth about honesty" (admittedly one of my fav eps) is also just ridiculous bc both of them always get pissed off at the other one for being honest, even in the past. i've seen people get mad at topanga for throwing yale in cory's face but lbr, who didn't see that coming? i guess maybe it's a little weird bc she'd never been resentful about it before, but that's a HUGE thing in their relationship. and yes, it is weird that she's using his razor without his permission but again just the pressuring her to show him her ass is also fucking weird (it's also weird imo that they've been together "their whole lives" but they've only ever kissed, but again, holier than thou bullshit)

He's trying to ween his way in appealing to Vox again, but RR!AU Vox is just so tired. Alastor keeps bringing up the past....This was kind of a wacky scenario to write because it does skip/make you infer a lot of stages of development, but the AU is close enough to canon that I think it's not far to imagine filling in the gaps hhh....

9. What are your file name conventions?

I have terrible file organization. Many of them are named "a", "aa3", "asgv", "fhgh", or other random keyboard smashes. Recently, I have a bad habit of naming files "sketch1", "sk1", "skht1", or some misspelled way-- it's gotten so bad I'm up to "sketch22".... I find things by icon only.

14. Any favorite motifs?

Straight edges and shapes, maybe? I started drawing with an anime style though I'm mostly into western media-- I think it's very satisfying to have nice shape design/silhouettes though, but I don't draw in a super cartoony or exaggerated style so it's kind of hard to tell that I like and have fun doing it. I'm kind of scattered and like to dip my foot into everything unfortunately.

30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated?

None really, but if I had to pick one for HH, maybe this one.

First impression: I know that Matsui-sensei gives all his characters their time to shine, so I was excited to see how he'd treat her as the story progressed. Her deadpan delivery was really endearing to me.

Impression now: I really adore Shizuku!! Her arc is such a beautiful example of so many themes that are important to this story. I can't wait to see her grow into herself and become more outspoken, and fight for her desires...! and also just experience the pleasures that life has to offer!

Favorite moment: "I want to feed your eyeball to a snake ^_^" is one of the first things she said that really made me giggle hehe. Her gambling battle against Mima is so insanely iconic and I think about it all the time.

Idea for a story: If I had to write about her... her having a vision and talking to shige post-timeskip (similar to what happens during the mima boat battle) would be interesting. whatever i wrote would probably be very quiet and introspective. i do also want to keep working on the role swap au where toki is a god of a shrine and shizuku has known him since they were very small!!

Unpopular opinion: I can imagine people would get up in arms about her relationship to toki bc she calls him 'nii-sama' lol. It's very clear that she does have romantic feelings for him. unpopular opinion i suppose is that i love her love for him, and i think it's as beautiful and valid as mima and ayako's, too, but it's also important to me that they do NOT end up together. the only answer is for him to marry all three of them or none of them tbh, lol. this is an opinion that is exclusive to nigewaka and matsui's writing bc i literally detest harem/love triangles in any other media.

Favorite relationship: I like her and Ayako trying to navigate both having crushes on waka tbh, lol. which again is a testament to how good matsui-sensei's writing is because as I said before i usually Hate this angle.

Favorite headcanon: she's weeeeeeird bro. let her be weird. i can't remember if they actually make this joke in the manga or if i made it up but she's a kid who would sit and squish ants or drown them a little bit fr (sob). i think we need to let her say strange unknowable and slightly unhinged things more often

Tokitsugu

First impression: tokitsugu freaked the hell out of me when i first saw him because at the point where he showed up, i still hadn't been able to figure out if shizuku was shige's biological daughter or not, lmao. so i was like WTF DO YOU MEANNNN HE HAS ANOTHER KID. he sent me into a tailspin trying to figure out how old shige was, too, lmfao.

Impression now: I LOVE HIM. i love him. i freaking love the suwa family so much. beautiful man and his horrible son. i love them

Favorite moment: I love when he cries a little bit and blurts out that everybody ignores him when his dad is around. it's so freaking funny. more poignant answer is when he admits to yorishige that he snuck into his bed as a child... cries forever.

Idea for a story: I really really REALLLY wanna write modern AU answer to the 'kunitoki meets shige' fic where shige introduces tokitsugu to tokiyuki. i think he'd want to be supportive. but he also is like. this is..... unusual...

Unpopular opinion: More people should pay attention to him. GIVE HIM ATTENTION!!!! I love you forever Tokitsugu

Favorite relationship: I think about him and Yoritsugu a lot. i can't imagine it was easy raising a kid like that, haha...

Favorite headcanon: in modern AU i headcanon him as not being fully blind, but having a degenerative eye disease that has been slowly getting worse as an adult :( he's a single dad and lives with yoritsugu in a rural little area maybe 45 minutes away by train from where shige lives, but his health problems have been making it harder for him to come and visit his dad.

Five comfort characters

Thanks for the tag, @yoellglia ! Here’s a list of characters that I’m way too attached to (probably bc I can relate to them in one way or another) and love very, very much. In no particular order we have:

Neal Caffrey (White Collar): He’s an artist! Okay, a con artist, but that only makes him more fun! I love when he drags everyone (this inculdes his bff, the whole FBI team and his boss’ wife and dog) into being a part of his shenanigans. He’s also one of the reasons I got into art (my love for Monet started with this show). And he always did a cute little trick with his fedora, which had me obsessed to the point I took a hat and practiced until I could do it. Though I don’t think that skill has stuck with me lol.

Will Graham (NBC Hannibal): He is heavily traumatized and spends a good part of the show haunted by nightmares, drenched in sweat and in need of a hug (and proper medical treatment). He loves fishing with a passion and has a tendency to collect stray dogs (and actually cares so much for them, which is sweet if you ask me). Also, his style goes from scruffy and adorable to neat and sexy and it shouldn’t be possible but he looks great in both.

Nick Nelson (Heartstopper): This boy is indeed a golden retriever. He’s probably the fluffiest character on this list and I basically would’ve loved to be him in my teens (this sounds like it was too long ago, but I’m just about to turn 23 lol). He loves sports, sucks at Mario Kart, has a dog called Nellie and the best part: I’m positive he gives some of the best hugs in the whole world. He’s also the best bisexual rep I’ve seen so far and I’m glad he exists.

Crowley (Good Omens): David Tennant is him, I can’t imagine anyone else playing this demon who’s been in love with an angel for over 6k years (they’ve seriously taken slow burn to a whole other level, but that’s another topic). I absolutely love how much the character plays with style. His snake tattoo is my favorite and his glasses are iconic (tho I must say I very much like his snake eyes). If I was to cosplay a character it would be him. There’s also something about the way he moves that’s so compelling to me. I love his mannerisms. He’s also a plant dad!!! And by now I’ve associated half of Queen’s discography with him and well, Queen is one of my favorite bands ever so yeah.

Sherlock Holmes (ACD Canon): I’m specifically talking about Sherlock from the original works/novels. He isn’t an egotistic, arrogant asshole that seemingly has no emotions or compassion for others. No, no, he’s actually just a nerdy, kind weirdo with too many feelings. Seriously, just read one of the many stories there are and you’ll see the difference. And before someone comes at me, I’m not hating on any adaptations here, I’m just stating my point of view and personal preference. Anyway, one of my favorite Sherlock moments is from The Musgrave Ritual. Sherlock was supposed to be tidying the apartment bc it was littered with his stuff, then Watson asked him about the contents of a wooden box and ofc it ended in story time. And well, I don’t know about you, but I find his getting distracted with old stuff while cleaning very relatable.

and Nina will once again be on the outside of everything, demonized and hated again. bc she wasn’t able to fight against her internal impulsive nature, her need for revenge. she disregarded any possible negative consequences and instead gave into her momentary desire for cruelty. and at the end of all that, there’s no satisfaction to be gained from Carly going off to jail, due to how important she is in her family’s lives, including sonny’s life. Carly is essentially Willow’s new mother figure, and Willow is not going to forgive Nina for taking Carly away. Nina’s little breakdown as she realizes the full severity of her actions, how she’s made herself into the bad guy again and made carly the martyr, ironically Nina’s regret at her own selfish actions just makes me even more of a nina apologist sorry 😅 something is very DEEPLY wrong with her and she knows that but also she should really seek therapy instead of trying to one up Carly bc with the way the narrative is setup in GH, there was never any chance nina could come out of this victorious. Kon is nonbinary and transfem to me and i do have a more specific way this happens in mind which is he starts questioning his gender after already figuring out hes not straight, and this is a few years down the line post sb 2011, so hes getting comfortable living on the farm and having a group of friends there, being a part of the kent family (hes never had a family before!!) and its because of that new personal comfort and safety that he can think more about himself as a person and not just. An icon with a role.

I read his tt03 era as his big Repression Period (along with cassie) where he figures he has to be a Normal Real Boy so he ditches the 90s superboy charm for a more traditionally masculine look, which maybe works for his secret identity but isnt what he actually enjoys. So later he starts growing out his hair and tiptoes around more flashy costumes which are daunting now, because kon has a lot of hate for his younger self for being foolish and a try hard, and this all reminds him of himself back then.

Its a slow process but he will get there eventually and i think living with ma helps a lot. Being away from the public eye and with someone who wouldn't judge him for not wanting to look as masculine would do kon wonders. Also he hangs out a lot with the yj girls, and i imagine cissie would eventually she starts putting makeup on him for funsies (and bc cassie doesnt let her) which kon has many feelings about. No worries! Anita braids his hair like she did cissies so many times and kon goes haha does this mean im one of the girls now as a joke and then has many feelings about that too bc what if he Wants to be one of the girls? I have less of a specific timeline for tim so some scattered ones are:

It would take her a long time to make peace with being trans and to come out, bc imo tim would not be a fan of the Coming Out Process. Would hate to do it. Would only do it once its the last feasible option bc shes sick of lying (again) and being seen so wrongly by everyone. I think she just writes cassie a note or something like it would be funny.

Jack having been so obsessed with tim being his perfect masculine son would make all of this especially hard but also make certain stuff make more sense in retrospect. Its impossible to think about tim being queer in any way without thinking back on jacks behavior.

Theres a v sweet image in my head of helena braiding tims hair bc once she lets it grow out tim does not know what to do with it and helena has to do something about that (set in a future where helena knows tims identity. The cowl doesn't really show hair. But boy it must be sweaty gross in there).

While i think kon would be big into makeup and all sorts of fun clothes and shoes i dont imagine tim being That much into it, is not as much of a makeup girlie, loves a nice dress but mostly for occasions and such.

One of the reasons why itd take her so long to figure herself out is she mostly didnt get body dysphoria until she thought of the possibility of Not Being A Man and then started noticing little things that bothered her, bc tim would be very aware of which traditional standards for being a woman she is not fulfilling. First off, it is still ridiculous to me that this is even a problem in this fandom. This is an adult show about characters in Hell, and the main characters are, respectively, assassins and the eclectic cast of the Hotel which includes a cannibal serial killer. (I am eternally both amused and completely baffled that like half the awful puritanical takes I see are from Val icons. Buddy. Pal. The fucked up fiction is coming from inside the house.) I saw waaaaay more fucked up shit on Zim nsfw twitter than I see on Hellaverse twitter and that show was Y7. Up your game, guys.

Personally, I don't really see Loona and Via as siblings/sisters as much as I think a lot of others do, more just friends (and honestly I think canon moved much too quickly to give them such a heartfelt scene together, they hadn't even met officially before that point?) so it's really only the age thing and even then, the plot of HB has seemed to imply that a fair amount of time has passed since the series started, probably around a year- so Via would be 18 or older by the time anything actually started anyway, especially if they became friends first. Setting aside the 'justification' though... they're not real. They're cute together, I agree, and I think you should be perfectly fine enjoying them just in the lens of 'they're similar, I like how they'd interact, and I think they're cute together'!

I was pretty much forged in my opinions about this from Invader Zim stuff, where people insisted that liking two characters that I'd liked together since I was thirteen made you a pedophile. Obviously, I could tell that wasn't true, because it had never been the case in all those years up to people starting to be bitchy about it in 2019. (Before that, it was that it was bad because it was enemies to lovers and, more importantly, gay. Great hater throne to inherit, guys!)

Unfortunately... as stupid as it is, this fandom is way more puritanical than it should be, so it wouldn't be wrong to engage through anonymity to protect yourself. Find the people in the tag who are using 'proship/proship interact' or something along those lines (I've seen a few, although some tend to lean more on hard/dead dove content), post on ao3 into the anonymous collection which removes your name, make a tumblr sideblog that doesn't connect to your main, find fellow shippers and interact with them specifically. Do whatever you need to do to keep yourself safe from people who can't understand that thinking something is cute or interesting to explore in fiction is automatically bad just because they don't like it. The more stuff that's put out there about the ship, the more likely you are to find kindred spirits, that's honestly part of how I gathered my mpreg weirdos to me in both this fandom and the last.

I'm pretty sure that the callout I got for Sunny was why several mutuals who were a friend group unfollowed (and likely muted) me on twitter. Unfortunately, it left me worrying that the other shoe was going to drop any day for about a week because it got just enough notes to make me worry but not enough to get to anyone with any real reach to spread and get it 'over with'.

At this point, I've sort of reached a state of 'fuck it', because if it happens, it happens. I know that I'm fine, and the people I genuinely care about know that too. I know that what I'm making is entirely separate from my morals as a person, if not from how dumb the IZ stuff was than from the fact that I was an English major. Literature is full of stuff that authors don't make as a 1:1 with their real-life morals! And the one you're thinking about isn't 'bad' comparatively at all.

I think the fandom is starting to see that being a dick about fictional content is bad through the backlash to Poison and 'hey, maybe telling somebody that they need to detail their trauma to the public to make fiction is bad?', but it seems to mostly be centered on dub/noncon, so I wouldn't necessarily hold my breath.

At the end of the day though, remember this: You, as a person, are completely fine, no matter what others might think. Octavia and Loona would probably be seen as a totally normal ship like ten years ago (except for people who'd be dicks about them being gay) and there is no judgement to be made on your character in any reasonable way for thinking they're a good ship. You're not a pedophile for thinking a fictional owl and hellhound look cute together, any more than I was for smacking together two Nicktoon characters, and frankly the IZ argument held slightly more water than 'the almost-18-year-old and the 22-year-old' because Zim's age was so ambigious. Try explaining this 'people think the young adult animals holding hands are bad' to any adult who isn't sucked into fandom discourse and they'd probably be baffled that it's a problem.

I know that the guilty feelings aren't always rational and it took a bit of time for me to unwind how I felt about creating certain stuff too, but try to remember that above all else- exploring things in fiction has been a thing people have done for a very, very long time. What matters is your actions towards other real people, not what you do with fictional dolls.

As a software developer who mostly works with web apps, I may have an answer for this. And there's two main points that I want to address: 1) why are things bubbles and 2) why is *everything* bubbles.

Why are things bubbles?

This one I don't have as much of a definite answer for but my hypothesis boils down to "it looks more modern". It looks more modern because things *used* to be all squares. At first I'm sure they were squares bc squares are easier to make (the computer doesn't have to do any math or anything, it's just straight lines), but squares look older. Side note: I think this is also part of why things aren't shaded as much (think of the old windows XP start button, how it had shading to make it look like it had volume. Now it looks "old" bc it was on windows XP which is old).

So, round == modern, square == old. Bc things used to be square and we can show off by making things *not* square bc computers can make curves now when they couldn't when computers were new. It doesn't matter if it actually looks *new* new anymore, so long as it doesn't look *old*. (Bc businesspeople, stakeholders, etc care a lot about not looking outdated. Fun fact: ppl in certain manufacturing niches *hate* things that look too modern and will reject software that looks too fancy)

Why is *everything* bubbles?

Software devs want you to be able to quickly and intuitively figure out how to use their site/app/whatever. A big way to make that easier is by maintaining consistency between sites. Consistency is why you know what certain icons mean (even when they aren't super obvious); the same icon is used for the same thing in multiple places, so you just know that's what it means (and it's confusing or annoying when the icon is used for something else). It's how kids know that a floppy disk is the save icon even tho they've never seen or used a floppy disk.

You might think "okay, that makes sense for icons and things that are actually *functional* but what does that have to do with shapes?" and that's a good question!! The thing is that because things have gotten so consistent, and people hate change (remember when Tumblr moved the reblog button to the bottom of posts and everyone was mad?), I could see the assumption being made that users will immediately notice how sharp a site is and will be disoriented or annoyed or otherwise put off because it's different. So nobody wants to break the trend bc what if it makes people reject your app as a whole? Then you've put in all that effort for nothing, and your target audience will not be reached.

So everyone wants to look similar in form to everyone else bc consistency is good. To differenciate their app, they focus on color palettes or a unique feature or fitting a specific niche, rather than interesting shapes or layouts.

Also. Just realized this could be relevant, but there's a tool/library/package that you can use on your website for free; it's called Material and it's made by google. It's easy to use, and it has built-in animations and things that seem really fancy and are normally difficult or annoying or time-consuming to set up from scratch. So it gets used a lot! And Material, afaik, makes things rounded (if not bubbles) my default (you can apply your own styling to it but I don't think most ppl bother beyond size and color).

In conclusion

It's because it looks modern, is convenient, and makes it easier to get used to an app/makes the average user less likely to reject the app on the basis of it being different. I'm not saying that those things are the views of the general public, or that they're particularly accurate, but they're based on what I've seen and heard a lot in my work and schooling (and from what other more experienced devs have said they've heard).

It isn't *necessarily* a good or a bad thing; part of it is almost certainly driven by capitalism, some of it is probably out of desperation or feeling like they *have* to in order to be/stay relevant, and some of it is just thinking it looks clean/cool/modern. I don't have any real suggestions for how to change it since it *is* so pervasive, but if you really don't like the bubbly look, be vocal about it and support things that use a sharper look!

The purpose of this was basically to infodump and maybe bring up some interesting points, give an insider perspective, whatever. I personally like a rounded look and a square look, they're both good for their own reasons.

i'm actually so not normal about this song. every time i tell myself i've gotten over it, i listen to it again and literally start thrumming on the spot. cruel summer will always have a place in my heart above all other songs bc it's what got me listening to the rest of taylor's songs. it gives me a lot of forbidden love/one sided love pining vibes, two of my favourite tropes. the bridge is so fun to scream to, it's such a summer song, and it just slaps differently. will never not be good to me tbh, it doesn't deserve ANY hate

the one and only title track. it embodies the full album so well, and is just such a masterpiece. i usually don't like the title tracks of taylor's albums as much as the others, however lover is probably the only exception. every time this song plays, you just think of THAT person. beautiful. the only reason i haven't given this song 5/5 is because sometimes i MIGHT skip lover if i've had a bad day or just not in the mood- basically it's not a song that uplifts you or can be played whenever. on the other hand i gave it an extra 0.25 because of the live performance of lover the first show after the breakup was announced officially- seeing the opposite and sad side of that song which i had never even thought about made me love this song so much more

I SIMPLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THIS SONG GETS SO MUCH HATE?? it's such a bop, and i can only dream of angry singing this with a huge crowd with thousands of other girls. it's the perfect angry iconic song, and i can't remember ever skipping it. also the blazers and silver + red bottomed shoes from the eras tour are so iconic. again, i can't think of a negative element of this song except that i don't think it directly links to the main theme of the album, however it still somehow fits. i also like how the lyrics aren't saying that all men lie, cheat, are narcissistic, etc but instead how people disregard these things ONLY when they're done by men, however accuse women of these same things

listen. i can't like this song, and i have genuinely tried. i'm not sure what it is, maybe the constant repetition of the same lyrics (but i understand that was done deliberately to create a certain effect). one thing i can give it credit for, however, is that i think the lyrics and the beat convey exactly the message and emotions she wanted it to convey. but yeah. i'm not particularly partial to many of the track fives either. also don't attack me but i've been waiting for this to be cut from the setlist forever BUT another thing i can give it credit for is the iconic 'the archer' pose

again, another underrated bop. tbh i never took much interest in this song, but a few weeks back i heard it for the first time in a while and it just went so hard. the clicking beat in the back (listen, i don't know my musical terms), the LYRICS, the implications of the song contrasting the kinda upbeat happy-go-lucky sound of it is just so good and quite unlike taylor's usually style. also, one thing she doesn't do enough in her song's that i'm OBSESSED with is singing particular lyrics in such a way that you can hear her expressions (like the cheeky smile you can hear in the lyric i wrote above, and in 'it's like i'm seventeen no-one understand, no-one understands'), and because she does this TWICE in one song makes it so precious to me. idk i'm just such a i think he knows defender it's so slept on

THIS SONG IS SO GOOD. like to me this song has always been the embodiment of taylor and just the journey she's been through and everything that's happened along the way (even though it doesn't explicitly mention anything, but that's just the vibes it gives me). opening the eras tour with this song was such a good choice that tbh i never expected, but yeah. again, the hate for this song is so unsolicited like... the only reason i haven't given this song a higher score is because it's a great song, but when compared to the rest of the album, it's not one of my tops.

WHY SO MUCH HATE FOR SUCH A CUTE SONG?? this song is so fun and i love listening to paper rings sped up to practically rap to it 😭😭 it literally embodies the friends to lovers trope so well, and it's so FUN i honestly don't understand the hate. it was actually one of the first songs from lover that i listened to. again, the only reason this isn't ranked higher is because this would definitely be in my top ten lover songs, but not top five. also, like lover, sometimes you're just angry or sad and this is definitely NOT the song for those sort of moods

I DESPISE MY PAST SELF FOR INITIALLY NOT LIKING THIS SONG. i could go on and on about cornelia street for hours, it's the perfect mix of bittersweet and a cute love song. tbh, i've always considered it a sweet song until i saw the performance of when she did it acoustic as a surprise song, and girl was ANGRY (if there's something anyone should know about my ts preferences, is that i am OBSESSED with her angry performances- they give songs so much more meaning and offer a very different perspectives to songs in some cases), and ever since then i've only ever seen it as a resentful and reminiscing breakup song. also i've only just realised after listening to cornelia street and false god back to back that she says 'i get mystified by how this city screams your name' and in false god she says 'i'm new york city'... ughhh i will never get over this song

yet again. why so much hate for such a cute song?? it captures the feeling of being in love so well, and it's just so upbeat and fun. also, after the breakup and 'so long, london', it hits so different and in a good way tbh. it was also one of the first songs from lover that i genuinely would never skip, and for that reason i listened to it too much (which is why i didn't rank it a little higher). london boy is such a bop and i will never be convinced otherwise

i don't think afterglow is AS underrated as some others, but i feel like it's really overshadowed by daylight. the 'woah's and 'oh's in this song are SO GOOD, and the lyrics are just out of this world. tbh i've only really started being obsessed with this song recently, but it's genuinely such a banger. the performance of it at the eras tour was SO GOOD, genuinely made me want to cry. it's kind of like cornelia street, in the sense that it initially sounds like a sweet, yearning love song but is really just 'you're losing me' prior to the realisation that a relationship needs effort from both sides to make it work...

I WILL ALWAYS DEFEND THIS SONG. it's so fun and upbeat, and (i think?) one of the few songs which highlight individuality and being different. i don't understand the hate for it, and it's genuinely disappointing to see how some people reacted to having me as a surprise song at the eras tour- i can sympathise with not liking the song, but being downright annoyed or angry is unjustified. i feel like if people genuinely tried to like it, they could- also, i think i feel like it's a 'thing' now where people just hate me! only because everyone else does, because in some comments sections you'll find EVERYONE defending it and in others EVERYONE absolutely slamming it

again, underrated and slept on. i like the 'ooh's throughout the whole song, it makes it sound so nostalgic and makes you miss something that you never had. i love the platonic aspect of this song as well as the undertones of friends to lovers- it's one of those songs that will never be uninteresting. the only reason i have not ranked it higher is yet again, there are other songs on lover that i would choose over inthaf any day

this would probably be a little higher however afterglow really outdoes this song for me (idk why but i've always associated these two songs together 😭😭. however i will say this bridge was written so well, however i'm not sure if i like the key change in the bridge, i prefer the lower (again, forgive my lack of technical terms ejhdbjwh) pitch/tone she sings the rest of the song in. but i do like the fact that this is the last track of the album, i think it really fits and is just such a great conclusion to the whole thing, and the whole idea about there being 'daylight' after a 'dark night' and how that parallels that this song is the last on lover.

hi the post above finaly got me to wright down alot of my thoughts to do with john and the community's hes been part of and how that affects him [through my eyes as a younger person in alot of the same community's, looking at the people who have lead similar lives- minus the occult stuff[mostly]] its long but there is a tldr

[for context my tags on the post: #especialy “John wouldn’t probably own a bisexual flag ever or have any pride memorabilia”#that really made something click im my mind for john#alot of they way i approach john is through the lens of an old punk#idk how to explain but you have these people that are subtely off from the norm but normal people cant quite put a finger on#and you could never tell from looking that they say go to all the protests and riots and sing for the tories to die#theres people who wear it proudly#and people who hide it because of others reactions#or just cause its personal and not strangers buisness#i feel john grew up with people having enough reasons to put him down. hes not handing them more#but also theres a difference between pride in part of your identity and showing other ppl and strangers it#some stuff is very personal- im p out and proud queer but there are some other apects of my identity that im very proud of#but dont want to shout from the rooftops#cause its personal#and i think thats how john feels about his bisexuality#its part of him and i dont think he hates it#but its just. a part of him#sorry for the long tags tldr your right and i hadent thought about it like that but it makes alot of sense#john constantine]

I always feel it’s important to look at the character and the history, and not ascribe newer ideas and things to older characters- i think there is a lot of value in looking at how john would approach it differently than lot of people now- especially looking through the groups has been part of, the people I know like john [northern, working class, dysfunctional family situations, bounced around alternative groups and subcultures] sexuality isn’t really a big thing? people are accepting of queer people but. it’s just not a thing that’s announced, gender roles are being broken by most people anyway and there’s just this acceptance and disregard of labels that tends to come from being in the mixed community of all types of people who have all had millions of different labels - I found out that two of the people I consider my aunts are both bisexual cause my mum was joking about how they can pick anyone but neither have had a long term relationship. it’s just so casual, you love who you love, and you are who you are and it’s not really anyone’s business- i found out an old friend of both my parents was a trans woman- unfortunately I never met her before she passed- but I wasn’t told until years after I came out as trans because it wasn’t a big thing, just one part of the identity of an old friend. I think it’s hard for a lot of queer people to see someone talk about 'oh we don’t care about the labels' and how it’s not that important, but the way it is now and was seems to be the true ideal of that idea- no one cares about the labels- if they turn you down they turn you down, if they correct the pronouns they have corrected the pronouns, "be who you wanna be do who you wanna do". You’re the captain of your fate.

I mentioned bouncing around groups and labels, and it’s something I see a lot of irl and very much informs my view of john, I am part of a community of people who have all been through different subcultures and groups- rude boys and metalheads and hippies and punks and travellers- all having stood against the mainstream but found no one label fits them. most of the people I have met at the gatherings have very complex identities- rude boy to punk to post punk- hippie to punk and so on, the mixing and combining of subcultures to make something that’s the best of all the things you love and are- I know we talk a lot with john about him being punk/expunk- but he was a hippie for a while and has been part of many subcultures- to view him as a binary- punk and then post that, seems reductive- I know these days people have ideas more solid borders on subcultures, you’re a punk or a goth, rude boy or hippie- disregarding the long history of people being part of both or multiple groups- and the groups that form from those overlaps. so yea I think it important to acknowledge that john has been part of many subcultures and that informs him- especially the identity issues due to not being wholly one thing, it’s why my community is great- no one is simple, it always a mix- folk and punk, ska and folk, dub sets played on fiddles and banjos- it’s about celebrating our defences, and coming together in our differences to appreciate and celebrate the complexities and contradictions of others, and the things that come from that. one love and all that.

we are the sum of our experiences- and we should celebrate that!

but it comes to a point where you get tired of breaking down all the influences and your just you. are you punk? are you buy? are you a rude boy/girl? are you gender queer? you get tired of the labels and boxes and are just you- after all YOU are the sum of your experiences. other people can look at you and try an analyze you but that’s their thing- your you and the labels that used to matter don’t as much- your comfortable being you, you like some of the music some people do and some music others do- you dress like this but also like that. labels and trying to be a certain thing can get tiring, it’s easier to just be you. it’s a long road to get there- and a hard one to- but as much as I revel in being part of a group of people with the same experiences as me- it can get tiring having the only parts of my identity they engage with be the part we share- god knows I’ve made lots of friends through queer solidarity but sometimes I want to be me not the labels, to be looked at in three dimensions, its why there is a community of people whose best answer to most questions is 'it’s complicated'

tldr: often people who go from subculture to subculture trying to find something that fits them get to old and tired to make themselves into the latest thing and no longer can be asked to care about labels and end up content being them and if u wanna try and break them down into all the separate identities then that’s your thing but it’s a bit weird mate. And that’s why I agree that johns not loud about his bisexuality.
