Trektober #14: Recruitment
"You're going to want to see it."
"Am I on it?"
"No."
"Are you?"
"Not yet."
"Then I can't imagine why a Starfleet recruitment poster is so important that it can't wait until I've finished writing up these experiment results." Julian tapped on the monitor pointedly, as if that would convince Jadzia he meant business.
"Or, you could just look at the PADD and be done already, instead of sitting there arguing with me about it," Jadzia pointed out. She could be more stubborn than Julian about this, of that she was sure.
He knew it, too, because he relented.
"Fine. Hand it over."
She did so, and watched his expression as he took it. Confusion, at first, then focus as he absorbed the image, the fair-skinned woman with long dark hair, Ad Astra Per Aspera written in the sky behind her. Confusion again, breaking into something like awe.
"Is that who I think it is?" he asked, in a quiet voice that almost didn't sound like himself.
"Una Chin Riley. Apparently someone decided at Headquarters that she should be the new face of Starfleet recruiting."
Julian's fingertips traced the words on the screen almost reverently.
"Even though..."
"Even though she was genetically engineered? Seems like it." Jadzia gently put a hand on his shoulder. "Maybe recent events inspired someone."

You know what time it is! Time to start our journey with Chapter 1: Prologue: Starbase 12, of The Place We Call Home, the fourth and final part of your “Built to Last” series! I absolutely adore this hesitant Spock finding a safe place with T'Mir, able to ask his fill of questions. If you ever want to write more with these two… no pressure, but I would rejoice. Anyhow, any director’s commentary on this chapter? Thank you!
I don't dare write more for Spock! He's too important! They'll come for me! 🤣🤣🤣
(I am a study in contradictions - I long for approval, and yet am terrified to draw attention to myself)
Also, I don't know that adult T'Mir would be able to watch her mouth re: Sarek. I'm not clear on the details (because I haven't bothered to sketch them out), but they had a nasty blowup they were younger, and finding out he never told his half-human son that his own mentor had THREE half-human kids of her own? Though now that I think about it, her going full Daughter of Florida Man mode and being all "Hot damn, kid. Your freakin' dad..."
Maybe there's something there after all. 🤣
I mentioned this before, but the idea of an SNW-era Spock encountering T'Mir Tucker originally came to me all the way back when I was writing From the Ground Up, back when I (foolishly) thought it was going to be a one and done. But I couldn't get it to flow, and I think that was because I needed to tell more of Trip and T'Pol's story before I could bring T'Mir onto the scene. Because this time it worked, and I think it was because this is the story of Trip and T'Pol and their children. And an adult T'Mir, born the same year as the Federation, fits better here than she would have at the end of From the Ground Up.
(confession time: I'm really, INORDINATELY fond of T'Mir. If that's self-indulgent of me, so be it)

SNW does feel like Trek by way of Marvel but I can’t decide if it’s better or worse than Picard? I just started watching it but I can’t tell who they think their audience is.
yeah it literally feels like trek by way of marvel!! i haven't seen picard haha so i can't weigh in there (i haven't seen TNG yet either outside of like, when i was a kid, because I'm watching the TOS-TNG-DS9 series with a friend and we simply don't watch that quickly sldkjflsj we're still in season 2 of TOS whereas I'm working through you know all the rest of the shows and stuff solo but I wanted to save picard until after TNG, for obvious reasons,)
SIMILARLY no idea who they want their audience to be. it seems like 'white male nerds who liked the intellectual tng' and not 'freak housewives who wrote k/s porn based on the campy tos' but it's like not even that because it feels so thematically empty and so hollow because all they are doing is like, other episodes of star trek and/or sci fi but slightly worse. like mr m0vieblog says every review of snw needs to save a paragraph for listing out every other star trek episode that has done the concept better.
it seems to exist because people liked anton mount in discovery (which wasn't because he was good it was because season 2 of discovery was terrible,) and because spock is a Recognizable Likable Entity. so like it exists because it seems like there would be an audience and, thus, money for it, NOT because the writers thought they had a new take on spock, the federation, the star trek universe, or anything, and it shows. it's a show really without a point of view and doesn't really have anything to say -- about star trek or anything, in my opnion, that doesn't really have a reason to exist besides making money. and you can tell that when you look at spock and pike's relationship! what has strange new worlds SAID about their relationship? It's gotten a decent amount of screen time but what do we know about spock and pike's relationship that we couldn't have inferred from the cage or even the menagerie? and it's clear the show has nothing new to say there! they have nothing to add, no thoughts, no perspectives, no idea what they WANT the spock pike relationship to be OR what they want to say to say about and that's why the relationship falls so flat!! or as i like to put it. spock/pike truthers work hard but anton mount and ethan peck having sub zero chemistry with each other works harder!!
#asks#snw#sorry this got long s;dlkfjslkfj;lskfj;sdlkfj;sldfjslkfjdlkfjlk#apparently im just waiting for the excuse to discuss my issues with snw which are MANY and VARIED#and honestly SIMILAR TO VOYAGER which is why its funny im watching them in conjuntion
