This past year left us with no shortage of incredible innovations, chief among them Covid-19 vaccines. Following a harrowing 2020, we’re excited to see how innovators continue to push the envelope and bring forth what they think the world needs. From celebrating and honoring black history to improving the mental health of K-12 students, we’re keeping our eyes on these ten groundbreakers as they share their visions with the world.
Chicken-less Egg Connoisseur Arturo Elizondo

“Like any good Mexican, I had two eggs for breakfast every morning, and like any good Texan I had my barbeque every Sunday,” says Arturo Elizondo. But when he learned about the devastating impacts that livestock has on the environment, he set out to find a better, more sustainable way to produce animal protein. In 2014, he co-founded Clara Foods with cell biologist David Anchel with a mission to take animals out of animal proteins.
Similar to how brewers use yeast to convert sugar into alcohol for beer, Clara Foods uses yeast and sugar to produce animal protein. Specifically, Elizondo and his team are working to produce egg proteins—one of the most challenging to find alternatives for. One trillion eggs are consumed across the globe each year, but it takes a whopping 600 gallons of water to produce a dozen eggs, he says. Since they’re so versatile and globally loved, Clara Foods is offering a cleaner alternative so that people can still enjoy eggs in all their culinary forms without the tremendous environmental impact.
Clara Foods has been knee-deep in research and development for the last six years, but the company is officially coming out of their “eggshell” in 2021 when they launch the world’s first egg protein made without a chicken, Elizondo says.
Problem-Solving Wunderkind Gitanjali Rao

As a 15-year-old, Gitanjali Rao is the youngest innovator on our list, but she’s certainly one to watch. She’s already tackling some of the greatest problems affecting current generations: lack of access to clean water, opioid addiction and cyberbullying.
After hearing about the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, Rao was shocked to learn that people in the United States and beyond still don’t have access to safe, clean water. In response, she invented Tethys—a sensor that can detect lead in water and upload results from the water sample to an app, allowing users to quickly and affordably see if water is safe to drink. She’s also worked to address the opioid crisis by developing Epione, a way to diagnose prescription opioid addictions for patients at the onset of addiction, after hearing about a family friend who developed an addiction after a car accident. And to address cyberbullying—a problem especially relevant to her age group—Rao developed Kindly, an artificial intelligence-powered software that detects hurtful or harmful messages and then prompts users to rephrase what they send. Her thoughtful, problem-solving innovations earned her the title of TIME’s 2020 Kid of the Year.
“My motivation to solve problems in society started in a very simple manner: to solve problems that we face on a daily basis,” she says. “I try my best to understand them and look for ways to address them. I am not always successful, but the few times [I’ve succeeded,] I feel like I have contributed in some way.”
To inspire others to innovate, Rao has connected with about 35,000 students across four continents and has more events planned in the coming months. As she moves forward in 2021, Rao says she has more ideas in the works and that she’ll continue developing her current innovations as she searches for the partners to help her out.
Storytelling Composer Barron Ryan

On May 31, 1921, a mob of white residents attacked the Greenwood District, a predominantly black neighborhood, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in what’s known as the Tulsa Race Massacre. The attack—one of the worst acts of racial violence in American history—continued through the next day as the mob killed more than 300 black Tulsans, displaced 10,000 others and burned more than 35 city blocks to the ground.
To commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, Chamber Music Tulsa commissioned composer and performer Barron Ryan to tell the story of the tragedy through a piano trio. As a Tulsa native, Ryan says that it’s important for him to tell this story—a story that needs to be remembered. “It’s an integral part of who I am, and I’m honored to do it,” he says.
“Music can tell a story without using words, [and it] has an unparalleled ability to communicate” Ryan says, which is what he aspires to do with his trio. In composing the piece, he looked through firsthand accounts of the massacre. He read about a woman who hid with her daughter and read psalms as the attack raged on. Psalm 88:3 spoke to Ryan, and it ultimately inspired the melody. One of the verses reads, “My soul is full of troubles,” which Ryan borrowed as the title of his trio.
He hopes that his music inspires people to reflect on the Tulsa Race Massacre and to be courageous—to do what’s right and not simply what is easy, he says. “I’m hoping that it’s well received, and that we remember our history as Tulsans and learn the right lessons and not repeat something like this again.”
Transit Trailblazer Andrea Ponti

The Covid-19 pandemic brought public transportation to a screeching halt as people who had the means to travel in their own private vehicles opted to do so. Andrea Ponti, the founder and director of Ponti Design Studio, took the opportunity to re-think and re-plan how we get around. Inspired by social distancing, he developed Island, an electric tram designed for a post-pandemic Hong Kong, the city where he resides.
“When the pandemic took over Hong Kong, many people turned to private transport causing a dramatic increase in traffic, pollution and noise,” he says. “What makes Island attractive is that it helps to solve all those problems. The bottom line is technology needs good design in order to be efficient and accessible to most people, and I think Island might be an example of that.”
Instead of sitting in rows, the tram’s seats are organized in circles, or “islands,” seating people with their backs towards each other so they can look out the window instead of facing others. “To me that is a safer way to commute and a fun way to take in the city sights and see Hong Kong from a different viewpoint,” he says. Plus, the tram is electric and driverless, making it eco-friendlier and more efficient.
“As a designer I really like the challenge of re-imagining products and services that we often take for granted and that can be greatly impacted by social changes—in this case re-designing trams at the time of social distancing in a metropolis like Hong Kong where social distancing is hard to practice,” he says.
Ponti started developing Island in March 2020 and has since modeled the tram and produced a number of prototypes. Moving forward in 2021, he is working to scale the protypes, move into the testing phase and secure a partner to produce Island.
Honoring Black History with Anitra Belle Henderson

In 1860, a plantation owner smuggled in a shipload of 110 African people to Alabama on the Clotilda, the last known slave ship to arrive in the United States, decades after the U.S. had banned the importation of enslaved people. When enslaved people were freed in 1865, survivors of the Clotilda couldn’t afford to return to Africa, so they founded Africatown instead, a bustling town rooted in their homelands and cultures.
After years of searching for the long-lost Clotilda, a team of historians and archaeologists finally discovered it at the bottom of Alabama’s Mobile River in 2019. Now, the City of Mobile will open a heritage house in the summer of 2021 to tell the story of the Clotilda‘s survivors and of Africatown.
“We are excited to help the community tell their story,” says Anitra Belle Henderson, the executive director of communications and external affairs for the City of Mobile and the lead on all the Africatown projects. “Our goal is for visitors to understand more about those who were enslaved. They have a name and a story.”
The heritage house is designed to be an immersive experience. Visitors will feel the waves of the ocean like the enslaved people felt on their voyage, read stories of the slave trade and be introduced to the survivors of the Clotilda. They’ll also be able to visit Africatown, where many descendants of the Clotilda‘s survivors still reside.
“Each detail of the heritage house was designed with reverence to the ancestors, descendants and the community,” Belle Henderson says. “Those who are curious about African culture can visit an African community on American soil—a community that was built with hope and promise.”
“The many stories show the diverse brilliance of black people,” she says. “Since the [discovery] of the Clotilda there has been a new excitement in the community. Educating people about Africatown’s past will definitely create a bright future for a community that so deserves the attention it is receiving.”

In April 2021, the Mayflower Autonomous Ship, one of the world’s first full-sized self-navigating ships, will set sail from the United Kingdom’s Plymouth Harbor and traverse the Atlantic Ocean to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It will retrace the voyage made by the original Mayflower in 1620 that brought Pilgrims to New England, but instead of looking back at 400 years of history, it represents what the next wave of nautical advances will look like.
The Mayflower Autonomous Ship is a collaboration between the marine research organization ProMare and IBM, which developed the ship’s artificial intelligence systems that will allow it to navigate unassisted across the ocean. The Mayflower team is hoping to revolutionize ocean research by creating an affordable option for scientists to study the ocean without necessarily being on board a ship. Without needing to worry about the logistics for housing people on board, like sleeping, eating and sanitation, the ship can accommodate more technology, like cameras and sensors, and stay out at sea longer.
“If it works as designed, then it will substantially drive down the cost of collecting data at sea,” says Phaneuf, a co-founder and co-director of the Mayflower Autonomous Ship project. “This will lead to [a] better understanding of our oceans and climate.”
Phaneuf’s biggest hope for the Mayflower is that it makes it across the ocean and sparks the conversation about how autonomous ships can be used to study the high seas. During this first voyage, the ship will collect meteorological and oceanographic data as well as water samples to study microplastic distribution.

Two thirds of all U.S. youth face at least one trauma by age 16 that can stem from poverty, racism, domestic or community violence, or substance abuse, says Samantha Pratt, the CEO and founder of KlickEngage.
“Students carry heavy emotional backpacks into the classroom every day that they cannot put down,” she says. “I was teaching high-need students in an overcrowded classroom and could not check in with each of my students every day in order to address their issues. Out of urgent need, I decided that I had to find a way to streamline student self-report.”
To do so, Pratt designed KlickEngage—an app that allows users to self-report their mental state each day by completing a two-minute survey. The app, which has reached thousands of kids,then provides students with targeted coping mechanisms while delivering real-time data to educators so that they can identify and supports students carrying heavy emotional loads, Pratt says. Schools have the ability to make a huge impact for students by providing health services and resources, but they’re often limited and underfunded.
“By directly serving students, teachers and schools, we limit the impacts of adverse experiences on school engagement in early years of education so that there is a higher likelihood of student success in later years, breaking the cycle of trauma and poverty,” Pratt says.
Students are still facing adversities, plus the compounded issues brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, such as unemployment, food insecurity and fear-based anxiety, Pratt says. Since KlickEngage is able to be adapted for a physical or virtual learning environment, it can help educators check in with students, even from a distance. In 2021, KlickEngage is planning to grow its impact and reach more classrooms.

In 2020, homes transformed into all-in-one offices, gyms, daycares, classrooms, vacation destinations and restaurants as people’s lives became confined to their residences. As a result, people noticed just how important their home environment is to their mental and emotional wellbeing, say Jing Liu and Florian Idenburg, the founding partners of SO–IL, an architecture and design firm.
At the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Liu and Idenburg were in the beginning stages of designing a new 30-unit residential building in Brooklyn. They also found themselves adjusting to living and working from home with their two daughters, and they say that experience helped shape the design for the new building, to be completed in 2022. Now that people are home all the time, Liu and Idenburg needed to create a space that was both multi-functional and comfortable for residents. For example, they moved bedrooms to opposite sides of the apartment to muffle noise and distractions, which are typically clustered together. They also incorporated multiple outdoor spaces for each unit, creating easy access to fresh air and sunshine.
The pandemic has highlighted what people really need in their homes, and architecture trends in the future will reflect that, they say. “The main lesson to take away is that the lifespan of a building will be longer than the interval between pandemics,” they say. “From a sustainability standpoint, we should endeavor to build buildings that last ‘forever.’ It means we need to design for future pandemics.”
Mosquito-Trapping Mastermind Kennyjie

When industrial designer Kennyjie (he prefers to go by just his first name) was 12 years old, he contracted dengue fever—a flu-like disease transmitted by mosquitos—while living in Indonesia. “Being able to afford long hospital care, I was one of the privileged kids who walked out alive,” he says. Mosquito-borne disease prevention has remained an issue close to his heart, and it’s the driving force behind his new innovation, Quito.
While visiting Bali, Kennyjie noticed that the mosquito prevention tactics were inconvenient and ineffective, so he set out to design his own. Quito, which made the International Top 20 for the James Dyson Award in 2020, uses a simple chemical reaction to produce carbon dioxide and an artificial human odor to attract mosquitoes, and then it vacuums them into a chamber. By luring mosquitoes in instead of repelling them, Quito reduces their local population and the chance of disease transmission. It’s designed to be placed in tropical resorts to lessen the likelihood of an outbreak as people travel in and out of the region.
Kennyjie traveled through multiple Indonesian villages to ensure that Quito’s design is informed by the local culture, economy and climate so that it fits into the “geographical context in which it is needed,” he says. This year, Kennyjie will continue running more tests from his home in Melbourne, Australia, until international borders are open and he can start pilot tests in Indonesia.

Three Months Ago
“Can I get you anything?”
You and Rafael looked up at the waitress who had approached your table. “I’ll have a dry cappuccino,” Rafael requested. The waitress nodded and turned to you.
“Matcha soy latte for me, thanks,” you replied.
“Biscotti for the table too, please.” Rafael looked at you and smiled. “You look lovely tonight.”
You smiled in return. “Thank you. You look quite handsome yourself.” And Rafael did - he always did regardless if he was in a three piece suit or in a polo shirt and fitted jeans, which was his current ensemble. You shifted in your seat and tucked your hair behind your ears, showing off the teardrop earrings the hung off your lobes.
The two of you made small talk, catching up on the week’s happenings while waiting for the food and drinks to arrive. The waitress soon returned, placing your drinks down along with a small plate of assorted dipped and non-dipped biscotti in the middle of the table. When you reached across the table to grab a piece of biscotti, Rafael used the opportunity to reach across and take your hand into his.
“I brought you here tonight because I wanted to talk about us and our future,” he began. “I want you to know that you’re a very special person in my life.” Rafael shifted in his seat and leaned forward to stare into your eyes. 
Your heart began to beat harder. You willed yourself to be calm and collected. “You’re very special to me too, Rafi,” you replied.
Rafael took a deep breath before he began speaking once more. “I want you to know that I really like you: I love spending time with you. But, I just want to continue to keep things casual,” Rafael gave your hand a gentle squeeze and you nodded, in response. 
“Sure,” you replied softly, feeling your heart sink and shatter. You turned your head and stared off at the waitress who was now drying coffee mugs with a cloth.
Your stomach lurched and you did your best to ignore the lump in your throat that began to form.
“Are you sure you’re okay with this? I just want to be honest about where we stand; I am not ready for a relationship at this time.” Rafael stated. His question fell on deaf ears. “Y/N?”
“Hmmm?” You turned to face Rafael. “Oh! Yes, it’s fine.” You tried to seem confident and cool, as if his decision had no effect on you. However, you were certain that the shakiness in your voice betrayed you.
You couldn’t believe what you were hearing; of all of the places for Rafael to drop his non-committal line, he chose the coffee shop that you two had your first date at. You had hoped that Rafael was going to make a declaration - and he had - just not the one you wanted.
You glanced down at your watch, and pretended to be alarmed at the time. “Look at the time, I have to go; I have an early work meeting,” you replied, standing. You ran your hands over your clothes nervously before leaning over to your purse.
As you moved to stand, Rafael grabbed your hand once more, causing you to stop.
“Please, lets talk; let me take you home,” Rafael replied. His voice was pleading and you could see the worry etched on his face.
You shook your head and Rafael‘s pilled his hand off of yours. “Call me or I’ll call you...goodnight Rafael. Thanks for the coffee.”
That night, you had gone back to your apartment. Rather than sob into your pillow, you raged cleaned, cranking up the music so loud you were sure your neighbors were going to complain. There was nothing like a bottle of lemon-scented oven cleaner and DMX to help you process your emotions. You ran the details of your relationship- if it even was one - with Rafael Barba - through your mind as you scrubbed the spider grates on your stove.
You had met Rafael during the end of intermission of Hamilton. The lights began to dim, and the throngs of theater goers began to file back to their seats. You tried to move right, he tried to move right; the same thing happened as you moved to the left. You both laughed awkwardly, and eventually Rafael moved out of the way so you could walk past. As you did so, your hands just barely grazed each other’s. You felt a spark and as you headed down the hallway, you turned your head and you could see Rafael watching you, a goofy smile on his face.
After the show had ended, you bumped into Rafael once more on the sidewalk while trying to hail a cab. From there, you exchanged phone numbers and subsequently started seeing each other. With his line of work, Rafael had warned he would not and could not be the ideal boyfriend. You had accepted that at first. You had broken up with your partner a year prior, so you weren’t looking for anything serious. Not at least initially.
But with matters of the heart, you had a tendency to let your feelings, which were carried on the wings of a very vivid imagination, get away from you almost immediately. Rafael had hinted that he was seeing someone else in addition to you. Olivia - something. But you tried to not let it bother you. You enjoyed spending time with Rafael and didn’t want to ruin what you both had going.

A few days later after the coffee shop incident, Rafael called you and you reluctantly made plans to get together later that week.
You had finished your day early with work as you needed to run a few errands. It was cold that day; Fall was transitioning to Winter in New York City. The wind was whipping, causing leaves to scatter on the sidewalk and street. You shivered as you exited the cleaners, your arms full of freshly cleaned clothes. One of the hangers slipped from your arms as a huge gust of wind blew as you rounded the corner of the block. You bent down to pick it up and as you stood back up, you saw Rafael across the way. And he was not alone. Holding onto his arm was an attractive brunette. You could only assume it was Olivia. 
Rafael hadn’t spotted you and you felt like some kind of voyeur - you knew you shouldn’t watch but you were too transfixed to move. You watched Rafael pull Olivia into an embrace; his gloved hand pushed away the hair that had fallen across her face - the same hand that had done the same to you countless times. He leaned down towards her face and you turned away, unable to watch any further. You hurried back to your apartment with your freshly dry cleaned clothes. You tried to remove the image from your mind but you couldn’t do it.
You canceled on Rafael that week. And the week after that. But eventually, you caved and returned Rafael’s calls with a weak excuse that work had you swamped. To your relief, he bought it.

Fast Forward to Present Day
The night had gone wonderfully. You were at the NY Legal Assistance Gala held at Tribeca Rooftop. You had danced all night, had a few cocktails, followed by a meal so good it should’ve been illegal. And you had the most handsome man hanging off your arm.
You leaned forward against the railing, taking in the scene ahead of you - it was late, but Manhattan was still a-buzz. The music had drowned most of the traffic, but you could still make out some of it if you truly listened carefully.
“You know, I may be biased, but you’re the most beautiful person here,” a voice murmured in your ear from behind, before two large arms enveloped you. You turned around, and came face to face with Rafael. You searched his sea-foam green eyes and smiled. You reached up and smoothed the wisp of dark hair that had fallen across his forehead.
Rafael took your hand and kissed the inside of your wrist. “Y/N, I know I had told you I had wanted something casual, but these last few months...it’s made me realize something.”
Your heart leapt in your chest as you listened intently.
“I broke things off with Olivia. It was getting too complicated and I couldn’t give her what she wanted and she couldn’t give me what I wanted.”
You stood there dumbfounded as Rafael continued his declaration. “You are so important to me. You are so wonderful. Cuando era niño soñaba con conquistar el mundo, ahora me doy cuenta que tú eres mí mundo y me has conquistado,” Rafael rushed out.
You blinked. “What does that mean? You know my Spanish isn’t perfect.”
Rafael stepped closer to you, effectively closing the gap between you and him. “It means, when I was a kid, I dreamed of conquering the world. Now I realize that you're my world and you have conquered me.”
“Trying go get into my pants counselor?” you teased, gently pressing a kiss to the corner of his lips.
“More like out of this dress,” was the husky reply. You looked down at your dress - a fitted, fiery red off the shoulder gown that hugged your curves in all the right places. A hand trailed from your shoulder, towards your décolletage.
Your cheeks turned pink and you felt an ache develop between your legs.
Rafael cupped your face. “I mean it. It’s you. It’s always been you.” You searched his eyes once more. You leaned up to kiss him, and Rafael used one strong, muscled arm to envelope you in a tight embrace; you could feel the evidence of his desire against your belly. His lips captured yours and he used his other hand to tilt your head so that he could deepen the kiss. Your tongues dueled and you could taste the remains of the scotch he had earlier.
Rafael nipped your bottom lip with his teeth, gently pulling, before moving to your neck, sucking on your sweet spot. You groaned and melted further into his embrace. Such a public display would have normally flustered you; but instead further spurned you on.
Looking around over Rafael’s shoulder, you noticed people were too busy wrapped up in their own world, enjoying the gala’s festivities. Rafael’s back was to the gala, and so discreetly you reached down and rubbed his erection.
“Mierda,” Rafael groaned against your ear. “Do I need to remind you of penal code 245, Y/N? Can’t have the Manhattan ADA getting arrested.”
“Then let’s get out of here,” you murmured in Rafael’s ear. “Your place.”

The night should have ended with you in Rafael’s bed making love until the sun rose. Instead, you were fleeing his apartment; your face was red hot and your eyes were filled with tears. You could hear your name being shouted, but you didn’t dare turn around as you ran out of the apartment building onto the Park Avenue street.
You were humiliated. Shaking, you waved your hand wildly trying to signal a cab. Fortunately a cab came pretty quickly and you hopped in, ordering the cab to step on it.
Rafael approached the cab, but the door was already closed. He knocked on the winodw, pleading for you to not go. You looked at him, your face streaked with mascara and you shook your head. Rafael watched helplessly as the cab pulled away from the curb. He slumped down, his hands resting on his thighs as he tried to catch his breath from running down so many flights of stairs.
It was too late. You were gone. And Rafael could feel his own heart break.

Ch. 14 – Rather be
Absentmindedly, your fingertips trace the edge of paper-thin, indigo petals, making the tiny lights in the heart of the flower tremble. Next to the vase is the untouched dinner and the medication for the night which you still need (though a smaller dosage) to be guaranteed a proper sleep, both important for anyone recovering from being crushed by an alien monster…and both the last thing on your mind right now as you contemplate your future.
Every situation in life grants you choices. Sometimes the options presenting themselves are all bad, but they’re still there and in the end, they might lead to something better…or so you’re trying to convince the inner voice that’s ranting about how everything can go wrong. The first issue had been choosing where to live, or rather: where not to live, which honestly didn’t really prove that difficult. Also New Zealand, Australia or even Canada were much more sensible option than “home” could ever be if it included your ex.

“Aye.” He actually has the audacity to bite his bottom lip in shame. “I tried to avert my gaze. I’d been smitten by your mesmerizing nature, but who was I to spy on you? A few glances as you walked through the city was all I had, and I cherished them, knowing it would never be more.” The Bridge-Keeper’s sigh makes your hair float for a heartbeat. “Then came the day of Loki’s attack. You showed strength and courage beyond measure…I could not let you die. Not you.”
A tear has formed and now it spills onto his cheek. Gently, cupping his jaw in your palm not unlike the way he still holds you, you wipe it away.
“You didn’t tell me…because you didn’t want to force my feelings?” His soft nod prompts you to slip your arms around his waist, pulling him closer. “But I’ve come to love you anyways.”
Words aren’t needed anymore. Time doesn’t matter. Only Heimdal’s burning lips as they meet and languidly explore yours while his hands travel, one to your neck and the other to the middle of your back, pushing you flush against his strong body. Your own grip adjusts as you nearly cling on to him, fingertips digging into his shoulder and grazing his scalp.
Lips part.
Tongues dance.
Teeth nibble gently as new areas are explored, heated skin showered in kisses while fingers and hands roam freely in a fevered yet leisured devotion to the other person. At the first moan Heimdal coax from you, he freezes, worried that he may have hurt you. It’s a whimper from the loss of his action that spurs him on in an effort to pull more sounds from you.
As the woman stretches in her sleep beside Heimdal in the bed, he can’t help but thank the All-Fathers of old. Pulling [Y/N] closer, he knows that he now will have an unparalleled reason to revert his gaze to home.
“I love you too, my lady [Y/N].” The whisper only stirs the lose strands of hair of the woman, but as he looks upon her, he sees a smile grace her face.

Pairing: Ryan Haywood x Reader Chapters: 1/? Word Count: 1,751 Prompt:  You came to Los Santos to pursue a dream of becoming a tattoo artist. Things haven't quite worked out as you planned and now you find yourself working a graveyard shift at Pandemonium Ink. Things are typically quiet, that is until one of the cities most infamous criminals come through the door.
It was the silence that really bugged you about working the graveyard shift.
When you had apprenticed under your uncle back home at his parlor there was rarely a dull moment to be had. Old timers coming in for touch ups usually had great stories to tell, occasionally you’d see a couple get into a heated argument over matching designs, there were even times when business was slow so your uncle would pull out his guitar and have a small jam session. It was the life flowing through his parlor that inspired you to take your art seriously and become a tattooist.
So when you came to Los Santos, fresh off the bus with bright eyes and portfolio in hand, you were somewhat discouraged when you found few openings and fewer owners wanting to take a chance on a no-name artist from the sticks. The money your uncle had loaned you dried up quickly and you found yourself forced into a parade of entry level jobs that kept you afloat as you continued to comb through every dark alley with a neon sign that flickered Tattoo. That’s when you found Pandemonium, the darkest of dives located between a disco tech warehouse club and a late night dry cleaner that, you were almost positive, was the front for some money laundering scheme.
Phil, the guy who ran the place, was hesitant on hiring you. You were sure that when he offered you the graveyard shift that he meant it more as a throw away offer. You’d be working alone and if anything went wrong it would take the cops about thirty minutes to get there. You didn’t care about the danger, not if it got you a chair. So with the promise that, if you did well they might be able to find a place for you in the day, you began your tenure as a pseudo night guard for Pandemonium Ink.
For the most part, it was pretty...unfulfilling. During the week the streets were like a ghost town and you found yourself marathoning cooking shows in some attempt to offset your hunger for a real meal. One could only live on take-out and ramen noodles for so long. The weekends didn’t offer much more in the way of clientele. Sure, you’d get the occasional roaming flock of beach bros stumbling down from the disco tech, bursting into the door so one of their friends could get a fifty dollar flash tattoo. You should be grateful but by the end of it, between having to almost lay on top of them to get them to sit still and their friends howling in the background, you’d wish for the silence that usually drove you crazy.
Most nights you’d think about giving up. You knew if you went home you could work for you uncle no problem. There was no shame in failing and maybe, after a few years and a nice cushion of money and a hefty portfolio, you could try again. But your pride kept you there, sitting behind the counter, flipping through a magazine and dreaming of the day you’d see your own art there on the pages.
As fate may have it you were having one of these internal conversations on a night that you first met the infamous Vagabond.
The door opening made its usually broken down and thirsty for oil sound, a trainwreck of a noise that you had become accustomed to by this point. You didn’t even look up from your magazine as you heard the slow shuffle of footsteps making their way in.
“Hey.” Your greeting was...less than enthusiastic. Already you caught the light scent of liquor; perfect, nothing you liked better than inking a drunk. Even as you half-assed pointed to the wall, where several flash tattoos were hanging, you were already thinking up some excuse to get out of dealing with it tonight. “Everything on the wall is fifty. Words are five a letter. Anything else you’ll have to-” As you looked up your words came to a pause, catching sight of the man that had walked in. He looked like hell; long hair falling out of a loose and drooping pony-tail, clothing dirty and torn up as if he had just walked away from some vicious street fight. You thought for a moment that he may have been bleeding but on closer inspection, and noticing a smudge on the sleeve of his jacket, it appeared that his face had been painted.
Your lips thin, what was up with this guy? Sometimes you had to deal with addicts that stumbled in blitz out of their mind, it was one of the reasons you kept a baseball bat under the counter, just in case things turned violent. Aside from smelling like a brewery he didn’t seem the sorts to fly off the handle suddenly, he even moved as if he was completely sober. “Hey man.” you call again, trying to get his attention, “You ok? You need to use the phone or something?”
He glanced at you, blue eyes bloodshot but focused. The look on his face made it appear that he hadn’t slept in days. “I want a tattoo.”
“Welp, you’re in luck.” You reply while standing, clapping your hands across your thighs as if you were dusting them clean. “We do, indeed, do tattoos here.” No response. Given his appearance it was probably a bad idea to try and make things humorous, so you opted to move the conversation along, “What are you thinking?”
"Roses."
Before you can stop yourself, you snort. It wasn’t unheard of, but it wasn’t what you were expecting. His eyes narrowed, though, clearly annoyed. “Sorry.” You cough and shove your hands deep into your pockets, “Just not...something I imagined you would- right. Roses.” You can feel the heat in your face as you continue to make a fool of yourself. So again you motion to the flash art, at least to divert his hard stare away, “There are several different options, layouts. We can do whatever color you want-”
"Is that all you can do, just copy and paste?"  You probably deserved that. Still, it didn’t stop you from shooting daggers at his back as he inspected the wall. "I was thinking something more personal."
“I can do original pieces!” He lifts a brow as your eager reply send you shifting quickly through the stacks of portfolios on the table until you find yours, thrusting it into his hands. You can’t even remember that last time someone looked at your original works. “I mean, there's usually a consultation. We sit down, I get an idea what you're wanting-” He sits and you find yourself holding your breath as he begins to flip through your folder. His listless expression is torturous and you begin to talk again if just to end the awkward build up of silence. “So, why roses if you don’t mind me asking?”
“I had a friend.” There is a slight crack to his voice, a tightening of his jaw that you do not miss. “They were sort of his things. I just thought I’d get something to remember him by.” He comes to the end of your portfolio and gives it a quick flip through once more. “You drew everything in here?”
You nod to which he puckers his lips in some sort of sign of approval. “So, this is sort of like what, a memorial thing?”
“You could say that, yeah.” He replies as he tosses your portfolio back onto the stack. “I’ve never had a tattoo before but this just...it’s something I want to do.”
Virgin skin. Looking him over you doubt the pain would be a problem, though you’ve seen grown ass men cry like babies when getting inked before. But he seemed to be a sort of guy who could take it. Still, something doesn’t sit right with you, something you can’t quite put your finger on. “Can I offer you some advice?” No reply, yet the look he sends your way signals for you to continue. “Hold off on getting it.”
The look he gave you could have turned your blood to ice. His brows furrowed, “What?”
You try to convey sympathy; you sit near him to which he immediately puts distance between the two of you as if you had the plague. “Look, it’s just a bad idea to get something like this done when you’re not thinking clearly.”
“And how do you know that I’m not thinking clearly?” You can see him seething, his hands fist against the bend of his knees.
You continue, though, “What I mean to say is that, whatever is fueling this need, it deserves to be looked at with a clear head. Don’t take this the wrong way but I could smell the liquor on you when you walked in.” His eyes widen slightly in surprise. “Doing something like this is...it's special. It should mean something to you, yeah? So maybe don't make a decision on it when you're not thinking clearly. You owe it to your friend that much."
"Seems like bad business, refusing a customer."
He was probably right. If Phil was here right now you’d likely be following whoever you refused out the door. “Look nothing and no one is stopping you from getting up and going someplace else.” You stand and take on the short distance to reach behind the counter, grabbing your sketchbook and a pencil. “But if I didn’t care I wouldn’t ask you to wait. Just enough to sober up, yeah?”
He stands as you approach him again, hesitant as you hand him a piece of paper where you had jotted down your name and number. “What’s this?”
“In case you take my advice.”
He doesn’t take it. In fact, he doesn’t say anything else to you. You crumpled the paper up as he brushes past you, your shoulders making light contact before he set off through the door. You heave a short but heavy sigh. Oh well, you tried. Maybe you should have just given in and done whatever it was he wanted.
You shoot the ball of paper into the bin and return to your magazine, though you find you can’t concentrate on it clearly. The entire exchange stayed with you and you wondered if you could have said or done something different. Too late now, at least you wouldn’t have to see him again.
Or so you thought.
