i think part of what makes Link's blankness in cutscenes so noticeable is the fact that he's not blank at all during gameplay. There, he's very expressive. He makes an ick face while eating Dubious food, he grimaces and shakes his knuckles if opening a chest with a punch, he visibly shivers or swelters depending on the weather, he smiles big and poses for selfies, etc. So it's just that much more jarring that in almost every cutscene, he's like 😐 as very dramatic things happen around him.
I know someone's gonna reply and be like "ACKUALLY this is brilliant because he's the link into the story so the audience can decide how he feels" but I just think that's bullshit. Every cutscene is trying to achieve a certain mood or response from the audience, it's not like the dramatic scenes double as comedy or whatever. It's trying to evoke the same tone for every player, so there's no reason Link can't react accordingly.
This is what I mean when I say Nintendo needs to ditch "Link is your link into the game". It only hinders the story and pulls players out of the scene because their character barely reacts to anything, out of some misplaced and outdated idea that expressiveness will somehow make it more difficult for people to project onto Link.
