Making overlays and emotes for channel

Giving your viewers something to spam We all love the emotes or overlays that streamers have but cant afford the price tag people are asking well what if I was to tell you that you can make your own overlays and emotes for free ya I know your not a graphics designer but hey eader am I and I mead my own overlay lol and emotes for free and all so did a few others so let me show you were to go and how to make a overlay/emotes for your stream There are many Sites that offer free services but the one we are using today will be Canva as this is my personal fav lol but i will have a list of other sites that offer the services for free :)

what we will be using to make our overlays and emotes

Right guys first you will need to sign up to canva you can sign up by clicking here once u have your account in the search type Twitch overlays or click here Twitch overlays

Now it will gave you a lot of options to edit so pick a overlay and start editing for this one Iv chosen Dark Gray Playful Gaming Twitch Overlay template . Frist we will edit the name on the top of the over u can do this by double clicking the text

Now we can change the background so if u go to the sidebar and click elements I'm picking Halloween as hey its nearly here lol

now we pick out background I'm going with the one with the bats in the moonlight just drag it over and right click replace background but this theme we can not change the background so u can add anything really to the overlays by removing the default element's :) Now if your happy with the design in the top right of the screen click share and download Then upload the overlay to https://streamelements.com/

Making your emotes

Now were are going to work on the emotes just like the over type twitch emotes to the search bar

HIII!!! thank u sm!! 😭😭 tbh i think experience video editing actually really helped me with graphics LMAOO i will list everything i used to do my graphics/theme below!!

graphics — ibispaint x

literally just insert a bg photo and go crazy. that’s what i do. layering is the way to go if you want gradients etc

for textures i search keywords on pinterest like: paper texture, grain texture, light leak texture/overlay. then you import it into ibispaint and mess with the blending mode until you get something you like

fonts — dafont

the basic fonts on ibispaint are ugly Af. u DON’T wanna use those. u want cool fonts. pretty fonts!!! the 𝓐𝓮𝓼𝓽𝓱𝓮𝓽𝓲𝓬 𝓕𝓸𝓷𝓽𝓼

when you get on the website go to the Top section (they’re popular for a reason) for the good fonts, or u can just browse urself

my personal fave fonts are: New Romantics, Glitten Regular, Bush Forest, Arter, Brittainy Signature

gifs — ezgif.com

^^ low quality watch me edit on ibispaint 💀

you can select different photos and import it into the website to make gifs which is what i did here and here, or convert videos into gifs like i did above :)

filters — picsart, polarr

FILTERS CHANGE THE WHOLE VIBE OF SOMETHING SO MUCH. on every header i have on my page there is some sort of filter on it. (e.g here and here both use the BRL2 filter on picsart.. i think?) polarr is also really good, i don’t use it much anymore but you can find qr codes for different filters on pinterest

overlays — pinterest

i’ve been speaking about this the whole time but pinterest is amazing for anything graphics related for textures

/OR/ aesthetic photos for headers like this (just made this rq💀)

LITERALLY JUST SEARCH “light aesthetic” [other prompts: dark aesthetic, cute aesthetic YOU GET WHAT I MEAN] and keep going

then use picsart to make a collage using the twitter header ratio

not sure how to make an introduction for this tutorial. i might have gone too extra because it’s so long...but this is highly requested and i said i would do this as detailed as possible, so here we go!

adobe photoshop 2018 (ahoy, matey!)

topaz lens effects (just for grain)

srwe (sometimes, but not for this tutorial)

reshade (i dont use a specific preset)

drawing tablet (wacom intuos art)

macbook pro mid-2015 (but bootcamp)

//part one

grab a screenshot from your own lovely screenshot folder! mine is straight from my reshade screenie folder. then crop it how you like it! my original screenshot size is 2560 x 1600, and i almost always cut the background out. this is how i do it:

click color range, then click on the background of your sim. the little screen above will look like that. the background should be white. it’s easier when it’s a fully solid color. those are my settings above. click ok! the selected area will have those teeny tiny marching ants.

click quick selection tool, then select and mask...

i drew over these circled areas using the “add brush” i showed above. use “on black” viewing mode, then make sure that the sim is completely filled black (it’s the unselected area). use shift edge so there wouldn’t be any of the original bg left over. my settings are shown above. then click ok if you’re all done. press delete and then ctrl + D to unselect. the marching ants should be gone. go ahead and crop it!

after cropping, i resize the width of the photo to 1280px! always!

i create a new layer for my background, then add in the psd that i use for my edits. (i hide my psd layer while drawing)

sometimes i also use liquify to edit things like this:

//part two

i use a soft round brush to do everything! it’s literally from adobe, but i changed a few things like the flow jitter in transfer.

red areas are usually where i put the shadows, purple areas are usually where i put the highlights

i usually do the shadows before anything else! it’s pretty simple. using the brush i showed above, i create a new layer.

use the eyedropper tool on her skin, then pick a slightly darker shade. change the blending mode of the layer to multiply, then draw the shadows.

right click on the layer, then select “create clipping mask” to make your life a little bit easier. an arrow will appear beside your layer.

//part three

this is where i draw over the features. let’s look at her face. these are basically what i think it needs:

pay close attention to the imperfections and clean it up! that’s what makes it “sharper” in my opinion. small brushes will do the job! something like this:

define the edges!!! define!! zoom in and take a look!! even though these are tiny little details, it makes a whole lot of difference! the eyedropper tool is your best friend!

i start with a big brush and then i use smaller and smaller ones as i go, which creates the sharpness. go a little darker as well! im not very skillful with my graphic tablet, so i add stuff bit by bit since it tends to become too harsh when i just go for it! im not as talented as some of u here ;-; i just wing it and pray it doesnt look too bad. half of the time im just experimenting since i literally do not know where some shading goes

i wont be showing every single thing, but basically that’s the idea! i’ll add in the stuff i pointed out above and more shadows. sometimes i might turn down the opacity of some layers if they look a bit too much. here’s what we got so far:

i also like adding some face pores using this amazing “skin texture 1″ brush from this brush pack!

//part four

for the highlight layer, i change the blending mode to either overlay or soft light. use a slightly bigger brush for the bigger areas. use the eyedropper tool on her skin, and instead, pick a lighter shade.

let’s start adding highlight to the purple areas i marked above!

try to enhance the highlight on tiny details too such as the eye corners! if you want something more dramatic, create a new layer and do an overlay layer this time! don’t be afraid to add some on the hair, eyes, lips etc.

//part five

ok lets add some not decent looking hair strands. i almost always avoid this part because i literally have 0 idea on how to draw hair. i use the “hair base” brush from the same brush pack i linked to above and also have smoothing on to about 35%! the eyedropper tool is still your best friend! just follow the flow of the hair and i guess you’ll be fine ???

i’ll also fill in the annoying gaps beside her neck

unhide your psd layer and wooowweee

//part six

select all the layers, then click create a new group!

select the new group, then hit ctrl + J or right-click the new group, then click duplicate group

right-click the duplicated group, then click merge group!

i do this so i have a backup of the collapsed layers and can make changes anytime.

i use the sharpen brush on small details i circled below. i used to do stylize > oil paint or topaz clean before, but since the personal action that i use blur things a lot, i try to keep small details visible and sharp.

next is smart sharpen, my settings are below. sometimes i go for a smaller radius, but it looks like this most of the time.

my personal action set consists of this:

duplicate the layer that you just used smart sharpen on, then click lens blur!

below are my lens blur settings

turn the opacity of the layer (that you just put the lens blur on) to 40%

select both layers, right-click then merge layers!

duplicate the layer again (yes, again) then right-click, choose blending options.

uncheck the R located on the “channels” under “advance blending” then click ok.

an icon will appear on that layer!

make sure you have that layer selected, then click the Move tool

then hit your arrow left/right key once or twice! i do it once because i only want a subtle 3d effect! go ahead and merge those layers!

last step is the grain effect. i use topaz labs > topaz lens effects. if you don’t have this, you can also use filter > noise > add noise that photoshop has.

hey !! sorry it took me sO long to answer this, i hope you see it. and feel free to pop in and ask anything else, i’m happy to help <3

for starting editing i would start maybe editing on your phone to just get the general gist and hang of things ... and then move onto something like photoshop after a while so its not as confusing.

i'm also going to stick this under a read more because it does get rather long

also i should probably add a quick disclaimer : i am by no means an expert, i edit for fun and have done so for just over a year, and i have only very recently started using photoshop and there are many other ways / applications to do this / use. now with that out the way lets dive in !!

okay so i’m just gonna show you how i made each edit ... for the this one i used my phone and these apps ...

phonto is for adding text, you can also download your own fonts of dafont. and polarr is for adding colouring / filters whatever u wanna call it.

so firstly i downloaded my screencaps from homeofthenutty (which is unfortunately a very temperamental website but it’s the best screencap website i’ve found so far).

so onto the actual edit ... i started off my adding my colouring in polarr

then i added a light leak

(i couldn’t remember which one i used previously ahdkkf so i just picked a random one for this)

and i did the same for the other picture which i used (same colouring, same light leak - different angle) also you can save your colourings in polarr by saving it as a style

you will get better at colouring over time ... and there’s loads of presets and tutorials out there to help you as well !

lastly (as this edit was actually quite simple) i added my text in phonto which is relatively easy to use, and i would recommend downloading your own fonts ... you can always come and ask me for font recommendations bcs i lOvE fonts ajdkfkkf. you can just go and play around with the text until you land upon something that you like.

so this one i also did on my phone using these apps

same as last time but also using picsart as well which you can do various things on but i just used to place the images

so same as before i added my colouring for each screencap ... i think i used a different colouring for the middle one of i’m remembering correctly.

then to lay it out as i did i used picsart and went on freestyle :

and then i picked out my three edited screencaps and fiddled around a lot until i got them how i wanted

there is probably a way better application for this because it is very fiddly and requires a lot of patience to get it lined up evenly and the way you want.

after you do manage to get it how you want, i just cropped down my image size on polarr so it looked more even.

then i just added my text on phonto, and overlayed two fonts together to make it look a bit like a postcard or smth lol idk what i was going for haha.

okay last one ! x

this one was my first proper edit on photoshop / lightroom so it’s not the best ...

so i added my colouring on lightroom cc which has the same kinda layout as phonto ... kinda but it’s essentially the same thing.

i transported the coloured screencaps over to photoshop where i added highlights on dean’s face using the dodge tool on a duplicated layer which i put on the blend mode luminosity. i did the same on the screencap with cas in it and added highlights to the background and lighter parts to make it pop a bit more.

i also selected the background on both of them separately using the quick selection tool and went to filter > noise > reduce noise to make it a bit smoother.

then i just added the text on photoshop and voila done !!

the wonderful kayla @iero tagged me to do this creator top five meme! (i’m slowly working through the tags for the last few days, i’m sorry if you’ve tagged me in something and i haven’t done it yet — i’ve been obsessively playing stardew valley ahaha but i’m trying to get back on here)

5. probably my parks and rec au, the first annual belleville, new jersey harvest festival, that i wrote for the my trick or treat romance fic challenge this october. i’ve never done a fic challenge before so it was really fun to try this one, and i’m proud of how it came out, especially because i normally don’t really have fun au ideas hehe

4. i think i have to go with this hesitant alien graphic set! it’s not anything super super impressive, but it really opened doors for me regarding how to make graphics and use textures and generally have some really hands-on fun in photoshop. i’ve been trying stuff like this a lot more lately, chiefly because i really didn’t set any rules for myself with this one and just kind of... went for it.

3. the stuff i made for the altpack creations week! maybe it’s kind of a copout to list a bunch of stuff haha, but to me these are kind of representations of what i’ve learned this year getting back into photoshop and editing. from the seriously intense coloring i had to do on the first two gifsets to the single mock-up to the graphic gif to the old movie-style gifset using overlays to the gifset of landslide that required making ten different videos match (and was a remake of an old gifset), it really ran me through my paces in a super rewarding way.

2. again, listing a group of works, but definitely my revenge series. this was a project i had briefly toyed around with for a really long time, but never really thought i’d actually finish, because, well, i don’t have a great track record with that kind of thing. instead, i did finish it, and what’s more, it helped me reach the payment threshold on redbubble — twice! — for the first time in two years. so very flattering, and it really kept me going during quarantine.

1. i mean i don’t think anyone will be surprised if i say that it’s inexhaustible light considering that i never shut the fuck up about it ahaha. this is another project i never expected to finish, because i knew that if i wanted to write as an homage to unholyverse, aka the thing that actually launched me headfirst and screaming back into bandom, it would have to be long as fuck. but i did finish it, and i am so incredibly proud of not only that, but the writing i did there. it has the most comments out of any fic i’ve posted and they live in a special place in my heart. it’s so dear to me.

How to make a design using Canva.

Hey designers, welcome to this blog.

A beginner designer should not directly jump to using professional software for designing. A designer should progress slowly from starting with basic software like Canva to using a professional software like Adobe premier pro etc.

I am here to give u some basic idea about Canva and make u familiar with it.

Let me give a brief idea about Canva:

Canva is a simple to use graphic design tool. It allows you to make images and designs for the web or for print. Since being founded in 2012, it has nearly 1 million users. Canva’s templates provide a shortcut to good design: they’re fully customizable, so you can change the colors, images and more to suit your taste. They have tens of thousands of templates for every design need. Few reasons one Should be Using Canva:

· One Doesn’t Need Design Skills.

· Easy to use.

· They have templates for everything (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and many more social media outlets).

· They also have templates for Kindle Cover, Blog Graphic, Infographic and much more.

· One can share designs and images with team members via email or link and determine the amount of access they have to make edits.

· It’s (Mostly) Free.

So, in this article we will learn how to create a design from scratch using Canva.

For using Canva, you need to google www.canva.com and sign up with your valid email id, name, and password. You can also sign up using Google or Facebook account.

Let me give you a basic example of making a Poster using Canva:

1. Choose the dimensions for your design:

Choose your design type from the Canva homepage. These are set to the optimal dimensions for each graphic, whether it’s a social media post, flyer or more. Or you can use custom dimensions by searching for “custom size”. You can choose from pixels, millimeters or inches.

2. Choose a background:

The background for your design could be a color, or an image.

Different colors tell different stories. White represents purity or innocence, yellow is the color of sunshine, hope, and happiness, and the color black represents strength, seriousness, power, and authority. Think about what colors best suits your needs. For help choosing a color palette, you can try Canva’s Color Combinations tool.

Or you can use a background image that supports the message of the content. But be careful if there’s too much going on in the background, it’s hard to overlay things like text or illustrations. When you are choosing a background image for your design, consider texture over structure. You can crop images to find pockets of texture that will work better, this way you can also remove any space or features in the image that creates too much noise.

3. Adding Elements:

Your design might include text, icons, photos or illustrations. These need to be combined in a way that is visually appealing. You should harness the power of negative space. Negative space, also known as white space can be any area within a design that is free from text, images, or embellishments (it doesn’t have too actually be white). Designers love it because it can help create grouping, add emphasis and improve legibility.

“Keep it simple.” Don’t overload your design with too many elements, as it can confuse the visual message of the image. This is something designers call visual heirarchy, which involves the arrangement of elements according to their importance. Try playing with size, color, and placement in order to see what works best.

4. Choosing the right Fonts:

The look of your fonts can have a huge impact on your design. Choosing one font is hard enough. But your design may need more than one typeface. Canva suggests never using more than two fonts in a design, as too many fonts tend to make a design look “messy”. You’ll want to choose complementary fonts, which add visual interest while working well together.

Canva has hundreds of pre-set font combinations to choose from. You can find these in the Text tab in the side panel. Typographic hierarchy establishes the order of importance given to different design elements. By applying different fonts, color and scale to your text, you can dramatically change the way your message is received.

SO A SIMPLE POSTER IS READY.

Always Remember This: You don’t have to study for hundreds of hours to be good at design. But, like most things in life, you’ll get better with practice, so don’t be disheartened if your first design doesn’t turn out perfectly. Instead, keep practicing and keep creating. You’ll be creating brilliant, polished images in no time.

I’m trying to be familiarized with Photoshop and well, I wanted to try this way of painting (a bit far from my comfort zone). It’s kinda like (semi) realistic...ish? I don’t know, but I’m trying to learn more about anatomy

I played with the curve tool in photoshop, I have never used that tool before since Paint tool sai doesn’t have it... ahh~ I wish Sai will mix with Photoshop and create the ultimate program, I just love the blending in Sai, no any program has been so easy to me in that aspect, but Photoshop has so many interesting tools!

Anyway, I decided to begin with male’s back. I don’t know how to draw any male body, I literally can’t so that’s why I wanted to push me even father from my comfort zone picking a male body. Although I cheated a little bit picking the easiest body part to paint, the back hehe I’ll do female’s back next. Then another part of the male, same to part but with the woman and so on. Face will be the last one because I know it will be the hardest part and I don’t wanna start crying from the beggining :’)

I also wanted to use this post to tell a bit about the post I make in december 2019 saying “I’ll draw the oldest drawing I can find from mine to see how much I have improve in this decade (although I started in digital around 2015 and I don’t have traditional drawings=ehem i suck at them)”

Well, yes, I know, I never keep a promise when it comes to my drawings, but this time is different! I actually did pick the oldest drawing I could find (actually the second or third oldest due the other ones didn’t inspire me) and then, surprisingly, I drew it! like, yeah! I did it, I even surprised myself....BUT: I couldn’t do the face, I tried diferents days, but I still couldn’t. It kept reminding me to a girl I know and that I don’t truly like so it was a bit awkard?? The face wasn’t that bad but the image of her keep going to my mind

So I guess I’ll just show you what I did

The only thing that has changed all this 5 years, is that now I procrastinate a lot and spent more time than the usual doing sketches

Another problem I faced that was harder than the face, was the colors. Like, look at the original drawing and that purple that almost kills your eyes. I couldn’t use it! and purple is not a color I have used that much in the actual piece, I only used at the end of eveything to make my drawing a bit more even (I overlay the light and dark purple with low oppacity it’s not showed in any of these pics). Appart from that, I don’t really use it, specially that neon blue-purple color

So I didn’t know what to do, if I changed drastically the colors, it wouldn’t be the same drawing, so I guess I wanted to be some colors like this ones.. I tried a lot of combinations tho (yes, I know, I’m really bad at picking colors even when I dress myself that’s why I love to have a lot of black clothes, any color goes well with black)

I wanted to change eveything a little bit but still being the same drawing (that’s why I was pissed off by the colors). I wanted a more dinamic pose, actually, I wanted to draw a pose I have never drawn, from the back! I don’t know, I was ready to experiment. I also changed the dress, better shape, more movement and the back detail instead of that horrorific tablecloth pattern

Either way, I won’t continue it, I’m happy with no seeing those colors again

It has been 5 rough years trying to learn alone all I know now, and it will be 5 and 10 and more rough years of learning even more!

I wanted so bad to do a 10 years difference challenge, but at that time I was only 10 years old and I only drew what schools told me to drew! I only began to start drawing (like, really drawing, wanting to draw) in 2014/2015. My father gave me a graphic tablet a friend of him gifted him in 1996 (wacom model ET-0405A-U). In january 2017 (I think..) my parents gave me the gift of my new tablet (left one is the new (2017) tablet, the right one is the old tablet (2015 that it’s actually from 94-96′s)

Many people I know names their tablets, but I have never done that?? I think I’ll call the left one Armin, I watched in three days shingeki no kyojin and I fell in love with the character

RESHADE

I’m currently using @pictureamoebae‘s Clear Bloom Reshade, but it is tweaked a little bit for my pics, ‘cus I do this with every preset I use, but it’s not too different.

EDITING

I barely edit my photos, but recently I’ve been using field blur a lot.

Hard to see here but I make a selection around my sim that I want to be the main focus.

Then use the field blur option under filters. I have photoshop 2019 now, but I can’t remember if my old CS6 had this option.

Again, hard to see bc this is an ask, but there are little dots on the pink floating chair thing and the house in the bg. Basically, use just click to put these dots on areas u want to have different levels of blur. So the chair, since it’s closer, will have less blur than the house in the bg, which will have more!

That's really all I do for editing, besides put the black bars on top. I’ll also tweak the curves and red saturation if the pic calls for it.

So I’m lucky enough that I was able to build my own computer, so it’s 100% really just built to handle gaming and graphics. So even if you have all the exact same other stuff as me, the difference might honestly come down to graphics and stuff (unfortunately).

I have all my TS4 graphics set to their highest setting, with uncompressed sim textures on and my resolution set to 1920x1017my main screen is 27″ and I always take my pics on that (idk if that helps lmao)I also always have the game on windowed mode and take my pics with fraps. Idk how helpful the last part is but hopefully it can help someone? idk? im not a hardware guy lmao

I think my lineart tool is just the default brush with max density and 10% min size. Here’s the settings for my two most used brushes :).

It’s a universe set entirely apart from our world and history - think of it more as a dark fairytale. In terms of aesthetics, though, I’d place it around 1880s-1900s.

Not all that different from the way a lot of artists use them! Just clipping masks with the texture layer set to “overlay” and opacity between 15-25 depending on the scale of the canvas. I’m very picky about my colours so all my textures are b&w to not mess with my hues.

Thank you very much! When I was 15 I studied a 3-year course at WCS and graduated in 2015 with a degree in graphic design. I articulated straight on to 2nd year at University of the West of Scotland where I studied computer animation. It focused mostly on 3D. It’s not a specialised art school or anything but it doesn’t have to be - remember that if you plan to study art. I plan to go back to get my honours degree after my gap year! I graduate with my regular diploma in November I think.

Thank you for your suggestion! I’ve seen a few webcomics do something similar, now that you mention it. I’m not so sure how I feel about cross-platforming my comic just yet, since I like the idea of a “central hub” of sorts...at least for the first few chapters. Tumblr does offer a lot of customizability (that’s not a real word Heather) but I think I’ll stick to Tapas or Webtoons for the moment! I really value your insight though, thank you.

Thank you very, very much! Oh man, I’m not really sure I’m the person you want to be taking any solid advice from, but I’ll give it a go. I consider myself way more of an illustrator than an animator, so I’ll give you drawing advice.

Be open to all kinds of art. Even if you live and breathe cartoons and character design, you’ll be surprised by how much you’ll learn just from taking the time to observe and appreciate things outside your own interests. I’m a dyed in the wool character illustrator and digital artist, but I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent marvelling at H.R Giger and Ilya Repin’s work. You don’t have to become a fine arts connoisseur by any means, but it helps to be open minded.

If you’re at the awkward in-between stages of your art - where you can draw with relative confidence but you’re struggling to find your individuality - try making influence maps. These helped me so much when I was 14 and going through my first “style crisis” where I hated everything I drew. This was because I was ignorant to my own interests. What do I love about my favourite artists? What gets my blood pumping? Why is it that I love vibrant colour pallets, cartoons and expressive eyes, but also marvel at the gritty eldritch atmosphere of Zdzisław Beksiński’s hyper detailed nightmare paintings? Is that even normal? It is. Variety is great as an artist and knowing what you as an individual like and dislike is invaluable.

When you draw, try and minimise the amount of times you take your hand off the page. If you’re prone to “flicking” your pen a lot, it can make your lines look inconsistent. By training your hands to make confident strokes, you’ll get cleaner drawings and learn to work faster.

If you’re a sensitive person then art can be a surprisingly difficult hobby to maintain, as you’ll find your emotions bleed out into anything you create. This is great for naturally driven people who can channel their frustration and insecurity into bettering themselves, but some people are fragile. That’s okay. There’s no shame in feeling overwhelmed. It’s alright to put the pen down and take a break for a while. Just promise me you’ll pick it back up again.

Gesture drawing is great for learning anatomy. Instead of getting caught up in having proportions/details perfect, try to instead focus on the pose in its most basic form. Capturing the momentum and direction of the body can give your drawings a more fluid look and reduce rigid characters.

Well, that’s just a bunch of really weird and vague tips but I hope it helps. It’s a broad topic to cover...if you need anything more specific then I’ll help as best I can :)

I think people need to tone down their virtue signalling and let people enjoy themselves. This is why people are too afraid to have fun anymore, and why merciless cringe culture is going to haunt young kids into adulthood. Animation memes will fall out of popularity like every fad in existence has done before it and you’ll get your wish.

This review unit was sent to me courtesy of the lovely people at Videostrong, so thank you very much, and especially Emmy & Cheryl, for the help!

Videostrong Technology Co. Ltd. was founded in 1998. They produce a line of android based TV boxes and dongles, as well as hybrid boxes. Hybrid boxes are TV boxes which incorporate other abilities such as DVB tuners of different standards (T2, S2, ATSC and others) as well as capabilities such as HDTV recording (PVR).

KI Plus is one of the latest models which Videostrong put out, and they have delayed its release to get a more stable firmware working – which is appreciated. The advantages of KI Plus (aside from the Amlogic S905 chipset): integrated DVB-T2 and DVB-S2 digital TV tuners. Those allow reception of over-the-air standard and high definition digital TV transmissions, where available.

What’s in the Box?

As can be seen both in the unboxing video and the photo below, the package is pretty standard, with the DC power adapter, HDMI 2.0 cable, and standard IR remote control and user manual. It contain most all of what you’ll need, aside from a Digital TV antenna, which is not included.

The KI Plus is a rectangle made of black plastic, with the model name printed in white letters on top of it. On the left we can see the indication LED/Power button. The KI Plus can also be turned off and on from the included Remote control.

Benchmarks and Testing

All benchmarks have been repeated 3 times and results have been averaged to give a more accurate reading:

Antutu Benchmark

The Antutu benchmark tests single core performance over multi-core as it is a better indication of the performance of one device over others in most situations. Antutu 6.0.1 crashed at the end of each run, although it did complete it. I also experienced sound artifacts (fast chirping sound) during the 3d testing, where music was supposed to be playing in the background. The results of the tests draw a mixed picture, where in the older 5.7.3 version, the box takes the very last spot of the S905 based boxes, but in the newer 6.0.1 version, it sits pretty in the middle.

GPU Mark Benchmark

GPU Mark tests 3d gaming performance and also provides a normalized score according to the used screen resolution (for a more accurate result). The test is quite short and should be taken as a supporting result to that of the more serious 3D Mark benchmark. Both graphs shows the same grim picture: This device is not optimized for gaming or 3d heavy tasks. In both it takes the place before last, coming only before the weakest device I tested so far.

A1 SD Benchmark

A1 SD Benchmark tests RAM and flash memory speeds. As can be seen in the provided graphs, RAM is much faster (by a factor of about 40) than flash memory – that is why it’s in smaller amount and is also volatile (does not keep its contents after a reboot). Here we see a mixed picture again, with the storage showing low results (in the last 4 places) while the RAM speed shows its muscle as it settles in the 4th place!

PC Mark Benchmark

The PC Mark benchmark test suite gives a more task/day oriented picture of performance. Things like photo editing, web browsing and video playback are tested. The KI Plus takes a nice middle seat as it shows it is more than capable at performing day-to-day android tasks.

3D Mark Benchmark

3D Mark benchmark is considered as one of the best ways to test 3d performance on Android (and other platforms). Interestingly, unlike GPUMark, 3dmark shows the KI Plus a medium score that makes it a descent box for casual gaming. This is supported by actual gaming I tested as mentioned later.

There seems to be room for improvement in the playback capability of the KI Plus. Mostly when it comes to Kodi, as I experienced some instability with the customized version that comes pre-installed on the KI Plus. Bear in mind, this is an early production sample, and the device is not widely available.

I experienced some Kodi crashes out to the android desktop (or app list) and noticed that the KI Plus does not actually retain programs in its memory (most likely to keep better performance, as there is no task killer/memory cleaning app) – so if you would switch from Kodi out to the desktop (“Home” button on the remote), it will actually force close the app, and when you re-open Kodi, it will go through the initial splash screen and content update procedure again.

I also noticed that 10 Bit TS files do not play (at all) inside Kodi. I have tried Kodi 15.2 official release, Kodi 16 Beta 5, and SPMC 15. All had issues playing back content on this device, and one would not show video playback at all (16 Beta 5). The 10 bit content did play correctly in the included movieplayer app – but only locally as the app does not have network connectivity on its own.

This leads me to believe that the KI Plus needs some thorough work in regard to Kodi compatibility and stability.

Digital TV performance

This is a special addition, as this box supports DVB-T2 and DVB-S2 digital TV protocols, and does it well. This capability is accessible both from the app list, and from the remote by pressing a button labeled “DTV”.

It uses a special app that comes pre-installed, called “DTV”. Upon opening the app (each and every time) you’re presented by the choice of one of the tuners: DVB-S2 or DVB-T2.

You’re also presented, only on the first time, with the option of scanning for channels. You’ll need to make sure you get an external antenna (not included in the package) or have an existing digital TV antenna at hand. The scanning process was fast, and reception was quite great, even if I left the small antenna I used in the room rather than placing it outside the near window.

Picture and sound quality are both great, especially in HD, but standard SD quality is good and stable as well. Recording is possible – either to the (Micro)SD card, or to an external USB drive. This can be set in the app settings, and record schedules can be set from the EPG by clicking on the desired program to set recording, or within a program – clicking on the remote control record button to initiate. I have successfully recorded a test segment of a Full HD program.

I did notice two issues: the first being that certain HD channels could not produce sound, even though they recognized the audio track (usually AC3 encoding), and the second – de-synchronization between the video and the audio. The audio did slowly catch up with the video in time.

Issues and bugs

Kodi Add-ons did not always install properly at first time each time. Some required repeat attempts to get installed.

Google play games service crashes upon running, and so does not function correctly inside games.

Volume and/or information overlay comes up on kodi while playing back video without user interaction, occasionally.

10 mb bug is present. When attaching big capacity USB drives, they show as 10 mb drives, and do not allow file operations other than read.

Antutu 6.0.1 crashes out at the end of testing, and produces a weak chirping sound during 3d tests (when there’s supposed to be background music).

Digital TV – AC3 audio on some HD channels would not play sound.

The pre-installed Kodi 15.2 custom version proved unstable as it crashed out to the desktop several times, mostly when stopping playback, but a couple of times just while navigating the menu.

Other Kodi/SPMC versions did not work well on this box. They either showed a quarter screen playback image, no image at all, or had other issues.

Network performance

Network performance has been tested using Speedtest.net Internet speed measuring app, in WiFi and in Wired mode. My Internet connection is 200 Mbit Symmetric Fibre connection. The included WiFi is 2.4 GHz only (802.11n) and so is quite limited. Wired speed is good:

Gaming performance

I use an application called “GameBench” to measure frame rate and resource usage in games. The application did crash during testing, but I was able to run it long enough to gather resource usage information:
