DIRK: basically... okay, i'm gonna try to break down dirks shit here and it might get messy bc i dont usually write meta, its mostly in my head, BUT ))
DIRK: daves toxic masculinity thing basically stems out of the effects that dirks/bros toxic masculinity, warped by the influence of cal, had on him when he was young. ))
DIRK: it's about his upbringing, essentially? which is why you see dave struggling with masculinity/toxic masculinity/what it means to be a man, or a good person, or successful, or a hero ))
DIRK: his arc is largely about him coming to reject the values of (toxic) masculinity that were imparted on him by bro ))
DIRK: a dude who was, for all intents and purposes, basically a fuckin wackjob and not even remotely a good guardian ))
DIRK: this is a good meta, imo, talking about like... how cal is important to interpreting the difference between dirk and bro, and why bro was such a shittacular guardian in hs ))
DIRK: here is another meta about dave and bro that im gonna quote from a little ))
DIRK: "The headgames and manipulation and attempts to model a stoic, emotionless manner of existence for Dave - which Dave is incredibly unsuccessful at emulating, and it’s really sad how hard he tries when that is just not who he is ... It’s refuting and quashing his own personality as a sensitive kid and trying to make yourself be the opposite of what you are is never good." so the tl;dr of this is, imo ))
DIRK: that daves arc is about him struggling with dirk's cal-warped toxic masculinity ))
KURLOZ: So with Dirk though...it's less about feeling forced into the '''masculine''' role and more about him thinking men are the stronger and superior gender and excluding women from value, even in romantic instances?))
DIRK: oh god, no, i wouldn't say that at all ))
DIRK: like i said-- the way that i read dirks thing is ))
DIRK: high toxic masculinity, low misogyny ))
DIRK: he does not think of his female friends as lacking in value. like, you can see that from the way he talks to jane(?) about roxy on the slab ))
JAKE: ||he holds roxy in higher esteem than he holds himself))
DIRK: like i dont have the exact quotes but he basically says "she's so strong and so put together and i wish i could be her but i'm me instead" ))
DIRK: also something about how he'd rather stab his own dick off than hurt her ))
DIRK: like... he doesn't exclude women from value. he's probably got a touch of internalized misogyny, but i think it's... a really slippery and ugly place to go into to say that dirk being gay is a result of misogyny. ))
DIRK: because i don't think that's true at all. i think that dirk is just... an Extremely Gay Dude ))
DIRK: and he loves and respects and values his friends? hes just... bad at the way he does that, sometimes ))
DIRK: dirks toxic masculinity issue isn't about anyone else, honestly? it's mostly about him. ))
DIRK: he feels that HE has to be "the man" who is put together and can do everything, can be everywhere, can guide everyone, can basically be perfect in every way ))
DIRK: because that's the masculine stereotype, that's what he's trying to present himself as ))
DIRK: dirk's masculine ideal is the stone cold gets shit done guy with no emotions or emotional flaws ))
DIRK: THAT'S the crux of dirk's toxic masculinity. it's not about excluding women, it's about the standard he holds himself to ))
DIRK: which is a really unhealthy and unreasonable standard that puts pressure on him to never show weakness, or ask anyone for help, and basically results in him being emotionally constipated as a motherfucker. ))
DIRK: but... okay, so dave's arc is about a rejection of toxic masculinity. it's about allowing himself to be a softer and more sensitive person, and not beating himself up for failing to live up to an ideal that was never his in the first place ))
DIRK: but dirk's arc is not the same as dave's arc. ))
DIRK: imo, a lot of dirk's arc is like... dirk believes he is a dangerous person. ))
DIRK: like i could talk a lot about how and why i think dirks mental health is Bad Shit but ))
DIRK: hes quite obviously like... inclined towards social isolation, arguably depressed, and bad at opening up to people ))
DIRK: but the masculine ideal/toxic masculinity that dirk deals with, while an unreasonable standard, is still his standard. ))
DIRK: it isn't a standard that someone else enforced on him, like it was for dave with his bro ))
DIRK: now that i think about it, you can sorta see this play out in the strifes with the striders? ))
DIRK: like, okay. who does dave fight? his bro. why does he fight his bro? because his bro is attacking him/forcing it on him. ))
DIRK: who does dirk fight? (drones, but also) his bots, which he built himself. why does he fight those bots? because he wants to. ))
DIRK: the same thing's true with their toxic masculinities ))
DIRK: daves is basically forced on him by bro, but dirk's is something he creates for himself. ))
DIRK: anyway i think that a lot of Dirk's Repression Shit stems out of not only his toxic masculinity/need to have his shit together ))
DIRK: but this (warning!! this interpretation is probably 50% me projecting!!) paradoxical belief ))
DIRK: that he is both like......... a Horrible Person, Whom he Loathes, because dirk's got a HUGE self-loathing issue ))
DIRK: but also that he is better than everyone else. ))
DIRK: so like... when you're bad, but you're better than everyone else? you Don't Fucking Talk To People. ))
DIRK: and when the core of you is a weapon? when you've got the ingrained belief that your inherent, true self is a destructive force? (this is like... pswap dirk shit) ))
DIRK: you basically keep yourself on lockdown if you don't want to hurt people. i don't know that it's necesarilly canon but i think it's an accurate interpretation/explanation of dirk's character ))
DIRK: to say that he thinks of himself as destructive; he's afraid of hurting his friends, so he attacks himself instead ))
DIRK: in pswap, dirk is pretty good at avoiding outright self-loathing. ))
DIRK: he doesn't believe he's a bad guy, just a dangerous one ))
DIRK: he thinks of himself like a knife. a knife isn't inherently bad-- it can do bad things, or it can do good things ))
