i love how so much of the stuff in delicious in dungeon that's not central to the main plot is left up to the reader/viewer's interpretations. it leaves a lot of space for fans to imagine what else happens outside of the plot, especially with how good the world building is. a sentiment ive seen more than a few times is that any character in dungeon meshi can be shipped with almost any other character, and because of how it ends you can even imagine characters who didn't interact much or at all eventually becoming friends and/or lovers, and there's so many ways for fans to imagine what else happens in this world after the story ends. there's little bits of interaction between characters that could easily be interpreted one way or another, but there's no malicious baiting or anything that's intentionally implied without being explicit.
That said, it is a little sad that there's no canon romance between Falin and Marcille, as far as I can tell, cause this type of thing happens so often in stories, where two characters of the same gender have romantic vibes but the writer didn't have the slightest intention of it being romantic. Also a little sad that, as far as I can tell, she didn't intend for Laios to be autistic either...
(to be clear, im NOT mad at ryoko kui here! this is JUST me being sad about the lack of good, intentional representation for queer and autistic people in media and how that conflicts with my appreciation for Kui's writing)
#dunmeshi#like i love how she wrote it and i do think its usually wiser for a writer to not get so in the weeds about character details#like a certain infamous wizard book author does.......#but what i mean is it's just a little sad that once again marginalized ppl have to just settle for headcanons#instead of explicitely queer or intentionally neurodivergent characters#id even be so happy if kui said she likes the interpretation of laios as autistic or or marcille and falin as romantic#i like it when writers say they like a common unintentional interpretation of their work without making a hard decision to make it canon#and i like that people have so many different interpretations of the characters#i just really wanna see more gay and nd ppl represented well in media#once again im gonna complain about how i can only think of 3 main character m/m relationships in animation#1 of those shows was cancelled#1 is no longer watchable unless you pirate it or have a dvd#and the other was a spinoff that also might not be available to watch.... fuck hbo#as for wlw theres a few more but only if you count the ones that weren't explicitly shown or only shown in the finale like korra and asami#fuck im waisting all my time and adderall on rambling about dunmeshi when im supposed to be doing work!#i finished my assignment but i have commissions to do and some reading to do#bye

The Timmons get a bit of a bad rap. Sure, they don't contribute much to the plot, but they still have some interesting characterization. In fact, the lack of presence itself makes them interesting.
The only thing the Timmons really do to drive the plot is to live next to the sandlot and have a treehouse, but it's hard to catch. In the original script, it's explicitly stated that they live in the house next to the sandlot, but this line was cut from the final movie. At the end of the movie, it's hinted at when Scotty says the brothers worked on building prefabricated treehouses, but it's not nearly as obvious as the roles the other boys play in the plot. Even if the other boys don't directly drive the movie forward, they have a strong presence in other scenes, and are generally more memorable:
-Scotty is the main character, he needs no comment.
-Same with Benny.
-Ham's home run prompts Scotty to try to get the ball from the beast's yard, causing the campout. He also gets the gang into the match against Phillips.
-Kenny's "heater" fastball is used to humiliate (for lack of better word) Ham, and even prompt a reaction from Benny, emphasizing what an impressive pitch it was
-Bertram brings chewing tobacco and gets all of them sick at the carnival, and shoves smalls aside at the beginning of the movie, showing his influence and presence in the gang.
-Yeah-Yeah makes fun of Squints for ogling over Wendy Peffercorn and comes face to face with the beast when he agrees to be lowered into the pen.
-Squints kisses Wendy Peffercorn, and tells the others the story of the beast and advises them not to knock on Mr. Mertle's door. If it weren't for him, the whole second half of the movie could have been avoided.
So why are the Timmons ignored? I'm not entirely sure, but it likely has to do with casting difficulties. The original script implied they were identical twins, as opposed to a younger and older brother, and what I consider their funniest line, "imfuckingpossible," (followed by Tommy asking Timmy not to tell their mom he said that) was cut from the film for obvious reasons. So, the Timmons, particularly Tommy, would have had a larger presence if the writers were able to rewrite some of their lines in time.
It most likely wasn't intentional, but the lack of attention on the brothers has interesting in-universe implications. Tommy is Timmy's younger brother. Why would the rest of the guys have wanted to play with him? They probably didn't, at least not at first (but Tommy probably already had some grasp on baseball, because the Timmons have a dad (mentioned in the original script, it may have also been cut), unlike Scotty).
I've mentioned previously that I headcanon Scotty as autistic, but I didn't talk about how I also headcanon Tommy as autistic due to his limited verbality. Tommy and Scotty have that in common, as well as not being appreciated by the other boys as much.
Take a look at this frame. This is the scene that occurs directly after Benny retrieves the Babe Ruth ball from the yard. Notice anything? You're right! Tommy is missing, or at least has his face cropped out. The camera pans over the boys, so he's shown at first, but disappears. This could be attributed to limited space, but why is there so much empty space next to Denunez? It feels it would have been less difficult to just include all of them.
So, what is my personal interpretation of all this? Like I said, Tommy and Scotty are autistic. Scotty talks more, and he learns faster. With Benny's help, he reaches a high enough status in the group to outrank Tommy immediately. Really fantastic unintentional commentary on how autistic and disabled people as a whole are expected to make themselves palatable for others, and those who can't are ignored in favor of those who are able to mask.

asjdhkfgjk, I'm sorry, but this is one of my pet peeves. As fun as it is to think that many of our sayings and proverbs were originally a lot more subversive than their common interpretation, it often just isn't true.
"The customer is always right" was popularized by Selfridge, but versions were used by retail magnate Marshall Field and hotelier César Ritz before him. None of them qualified it with anything like "...in matters of taste" anywhere I can find. Now, maybe it was implied that's what they meant rather than "Give the customer 90% off if they ask for it," but it wasn't explicitly part of the original saying.
"Jack of all trades" goes back at least to Geffray Minshall in 1612, though the similar "Johannes factotum (Johnny do-it-all)" was used in the 1500s (hilariously used in 1592 by English writer Robert Greene to disparagingly describe this upstart young playwright, William Shakespeare.) "...and master of none" was added in the 1700s, with the first known usage by Charles Lucas in a 1741 letter. Near as I can tell, "...but ofttimes better than a master of one" was added circa 2007.
"Blood is thicker than water," in that form and with the conventional meaning, dates back to at least 1652, where it was used in a sermon by William Jenkyn, and the way it's used makes it clear it was a known expression at the time that he was merely quoting. It appears frequently in 18th and 19th-century literature, particularly Scottish literature. The "covenant/womb" version comes from the Messianic Rabbi Richard Pustelniak in 1994, who claims that was the original meaning without citing any sources.
"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" dates back to at least 1820, when Charles Colton wrote in his book of proverbs "Imitation is the sincerest of flattery," while the idea goes back to at least a 1714 newspaper article by Eustace Budgell, where he says "Imitation is a kind of artless Flattery." ("Artless," here, meaning "unintentional, and thus pure and sincere.") The version that adds "...that mediocrity can pay to greatness" is attributed to Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), though searching through his works on Project Gutenberg doesn't turn up an actual source, so grain of salt. Regardless, at best this version was a later commentary on the original sentiment.
On the other hand, "The love of money is the root of all evil" IS indeed the original version of the saying, coming from the 1611 King James Bible, 1 Timothy 6:10. "To pull oneself up by one's bootstraps" DID also originally mean a ludicrous or impossible task, dating back to at least 1834 (though the original version specifically referred to carrying oneself over a river or a fence by one's own bootstraps, the meaning is clearly the same.)
#also satisfaction did not originally bring back the cat who was killed by curiosity#nor did the second mouse originally get the cheese after the early bird got the worm#and “but fools rarely differ” is a modern addition to “great mind think alike”#i'm not saying there isn't value in subverting these old sayings by making our own versions#just be clear that that's what we're doing#not rediscovering some lost original#critical thinking or wet-blanket pedantry?#you decide#reblog#linguistics#pet peeves#rob ruins everything

pt.2 of yesterday
I don’t want to flood people’s dashes, so hopefully answering your messages here will suffice!
anonymous asked: Hi! I wanted to tell you how much I love your work and how you make me enjoy every Monday thanks to your regular updates ! I saw a previous anon telling you how your writings lacks of emotion and I totally disagree with them... obviously everybody won’t like it but your stories just DON’T lack of love or emotion this is madness I want to thank you for publishing your amazing stories freely here for everyone to read. (Sorry if my English is weird I’m french ejfjekfjd)
“this is madness” LOL
You’re hilarious, anon. And your english is perfectly fine!!!
anonymous asked: Hello! Im the culinary student anon who sent you an ask a while ago and i saw you received an ask about the lack of emotion from your stories. I read kitchen romance and i actually really really like it and don’t quite understand how it lacks in emotions as I interpreted the stories more like the beginning of the oc and jin’s love story and they are only starting to open up to each other so i guess thats why anon might feel like it lacks romantic vibe from both of the characters. (1)
Anonymous said: Just want to tell you that you’re one of the best writer and ive been following you for 2/3 years now, you never failed to amaze me with your writings!! All your stories are so well written that i sometimes wonder how do you come up with such an amazing plot every single time and your stories are always nice to re-read and the effort you pour into creating your stories is also admirable (2)
while i was reading kitchen romance and ive only started s&c (currently on chapter 4) i can say that its pretty similar with how it is irl (and the part where we find out jk is an iu fans reminded me of my ex-crush whose also a culinary student, i would like to tell you a story about it but ill just waste your time lol) , just want to send you a few encouragement and love for you and your writings *sending virtual hugs* (3) -👩🏻🍳anon
You’re too kind, thank you (and also, welcome back!). I’ll be frank, there was a hot second I was considering taking down Kitchen Romance but I didn’t cause I don’t want my efforts of editing it to go to waste asdfghjkl. I can’t believe you’ve been sticking around me for so long :’) it’s always nice to know some folks stay. Anyway, I’m glad that Sugar and Coffee is pretty similar to how it works irl since I tried my best to do research. I definitely love a good storytime as well so don’t worry about wasting my time :>
Anonymous said: a good majority of your fics display an unfathomable amount of DEPTH. regarding character development. plot. even the shortest lines of dialogue reveal so much more to the character and unveil their true emotions. i personally think the more REALISTIC side of love may be perceived as 'bland.' ‘emotionless.’ whatever you want to call it. nothing’s wrong with portraying a relationship that isn’t overboard with a whole lot of tooth aching fluff or lowkey annoying pda. +1
Anonymous said: there’s nothing wrong with taking out a bit of emotion to fit the PERSONALITIES of the characters. some people out there don’t necessarily feel a lot of emotions. so it’s honestly not really a mistake if a story lacks it (unless it was unintentional). subtlety is an art that is hard to master, but you’ve done it! and to respond to the anon, sometimes, if you skim through a fic without reading every word the author intended for you to read, +2
Anonymous said: then it’s quite common to not feel the full extent of the emotions you were supposed to feel. just a thought but no hate. we’re all entitled to our opinions. but besides that, kina, you write on a vast scale ranging from hardcore angst to diabetes-inducing fluff. and you do it beautifully. sure there are some stories that are better than others, but i believe a LOT of it comes down to personal preference and taste. +3
Anonymous said: even if you are feeling creatively limited, you work hard to continue writing for your readers, and your determination and diligence wILL NOT GO UNNOTICED. i just want you to know that you write amazingly. your syntax is practically immaculate, your characters feel real… the endings of your stories always wrap something up and the strings are tied—even if it isn’t necessarily a happy ending. you can convey hundreds of different characters through WORDS. +4
Anonymous said: i’ll have you know that it’s hard to write. it’s even harder to write about people who aren’t YOU. so as someone who looks up to you a lot, i want to commend you for your writing. some of your fics that i read on a monthly basis: tears of a villain, a piece of the moonlight, head over heels to hell, ghost in the machine, a mark of betrayal, a kiss of poison, until yesterday, the truth between us and arcadia. +5
Anonymous said: to be fair, there were way more fics but i didn’t want to make this message any longer than it already is LOL. i find these pieces wonderful. heart wrenching. and SO DAMN EMOTIONAL IT PLAGUES MY MIND FOR DAYS. also you’re literally one of the few fucking people who can use the em dash correctly. thank you so much for sharing your talent with us! +6
Oh my goodness. I don’t even know what to say, anon. This is a whole damn thesis and it’s about my fics :’> You know, it’s easy to brush off fanfiction as a ‘whatever’ thing and indeed, it isn’t that big of a deal compared to some things in the world. But I really do take all my stories seriously and put forth a lot of effort - so to see it recognized and appreciated it makes me beyond happy. It’s good to know that my efforts haven’t gone to waste at all and that there are people out there who will support me no matter the endeavours I take. Thank you so much. You don’t know how much this means to me.
((Also, honestly I picked up the em dash usage after I wrote The Truth Between Us with gukyi who used it. I’m pretty sure I’m not using it right but to hear that I am, god damn that’s a breath of relief right there))
backtobleuside submitted: Are you kidding me!? Your stories don’t lack love at all. They’re the kind of fics that you read, soak it all in and then come back for more. I’ve cried so much when I read Beyond reach, Boo-lieve in me, A piece of the moonlight, His name, Tell me lies etc. etc, and also laughed and felt the emotions of not just the OC, but also the other characters. Kitchen Romance was also so fluffy and sweet and personally, I don’t think that anything needs to be added to it. Anyway, your fics do not lack emotion—you’re probably the first author I send a message to because your stories impacted me a lot and left a strong impression on me. I even imagine your characters as real people who have real lives that continue on even after the story is done.
asdfghjkl thank you :’) I see you every week and sometimes several times at that. I really appreciate your consistent feedback and following. You never fail to send me a message too which I appreciate a lot. I’m glad you’re enjoying everything I’m producing!!
youngfleurever said: Would just like to say that your fics do in fact make me violently sob to the boy where my eyes are so swollen I have trouble opening them the next day and I wake up feeling like there’s sawdust in my mouth because I’m dehydrated.
oh my god. please keep yourself hydrated hahahahhaha more importantly, how do you know what sawdust in your mouth is like. WHAT have you been doing LOL
Anonymous said: I’ve felt emotions that I’ve never felt before when I read your fics.... so as a person that has read your entire masterlist, I DO NOT think that your fics lack emotion.... I hope you don’t feel disheartened because you’re one of my favourite writers, not just on tumblr but like, evER 💓💓💓💓💓💓
Please, even if I was disheartened, the overwhelming amount of feedback and praise has completely overridden it :’)

haylo4ever said: Sorry had to add my 10 cents. You're such a talented writer,,, I WISH I could write a smol smol 1/1000000000 that you write,,, like I remember when I followed you bc I was in awe of your writing.... I mean?? Sure maybe not every fic hits it with someone but it's just ridic to name drop (a friend nonetheless) when you're all extremely talented writers.
Trust me, writing comes with practice!! I should honestly just tattoo that on me. God knows my first fanfic was absolutely GARBAGE. I didn’t know pacing, didn’t know that I should separate chunks of paragraphs, how to write dialogue or describe scenes properly. I went in blind. Even my second, third and fourth fanfic was garbage. You could definitely get to “my level or even far surpass it with enough dedication and practice. I mean I’ve been writing for four years, so thank GOD there’s been improvement. I wouldn’t be natural if there wasn’t. But clearly the more you practice, the better you improve! That applies to anything.
The me in ten years will certainly be better now.
Anonymous said: Hi kina! I’m here in support of kitchen romance! I actually didn’t feel like it was missing a ton of fluffy moments (and I say that as a huGE LOVER OF FLUFF) but the story was just as entertaining in the whole chase of them getting closer to each other! It’s honestly one of my favorite one shots I’ve read lately and I’m not saying that lightly! Also, that anon that said your work lacks emotion has probably not read like half of your masterlist bc oO MAN QUEEN OF MAKING ME CRY- black heart anon🖤
Thank you :’]
Anonymous said: Ok I’m very offended wow the audacity!Specially coming for my baby kitchen romance like that story made me feel so much and it’s only one of the many fics you have written kina like I’m literally baffled like dynasty has made me cry scream happy and hot all at the same time and I was literally just thinking about it that whole weekend and this anon has the nerve to say your stories lack emotions? When you are literally the queen of show casing all types of emotions in your stories! You did it all
Anonymous said: Also 😭😭😭😂😂😩hoooooooow and whereeee did they see any lack of love and emotions like have you read jungle park???? Inside my mind??? FREAKING SUGAR AND COFFEE (like this fic is made with love and I- ) Actually you know what , just read the whole masterlist😩😩💗💗💗
LOL tbh I didn’t expect Dynasty to receive the love it has. I was actually kind of wary when posting it cause it’s kind of Wild.
bangtans-peaceful-piegon said: just gotta say u handled that whole anon thing so well which not only makes me admire u as a writer but even more as a person :] (i mean i knew u were gr8 before the whole deal but yeah love ya 💛)
tbh, I’m not sure how well I handled it cause I was flooded with over 30 messages afterwards (evidently) ;_; which I love and appreciate but I’m not really as hurt as some people think hahaha criticism should be received well but it’s still hard not to take personally tbh. It’s gonna have to be something I work on or perhaps it’ll be one of those things that I’ll take better with age.

SPN 15x10 Heroes’ Journey
So I kind of thought people were maybe overreacting with the hate for SPN episode 15x10 but no - it was That Bad.
I really, really, wanted to like this episode. The actors talked about how fun it was in the pre-season press tour. There was excitement about it. I was kind of expecting another The French Mistake or Scooby-Doo type episode - canon but mostly taking the piss, not consequential to the overall plot, incredibly self-aware.
And I think it tried to be a lot of those things, but failed so utterly. And I want to a) unpack a bit of why, and b) write some fix-it interpretation that you can take or leave but that I’m gonna headcanon for my own sanity.
First, here are so many problems with this episode in what it implies about the canon and the characters.
It says that they haven’t ever been normal. Okay, sure, I’m there. God gave them a bit of Plot Armour because they’re his favourites. They’ve come back from the dead like a dozen times, I’ll buy that.
But then -
Then it says that they’ve never got parking tickets, that they don’t get colds, cavities? Okaaaaay, so God gave them some extra luck and fortitude. Alright.
But then they can’t pick locks? Fight monsters? The engine fails when we know Dean has built it from the ground up, loves it obsessively, and obsesses over its maintenance? Sam can’t fucking boil pasta? Things they’ve done their entire lives are suddenly beyond them, as if they never learned nor developed a skill nor have common sense.
What the fuck?
It is absolute bullshit if taken at face-value but okay IF you set aside the canon hand-fed interpretation of what’s going on. Garth tells them that they’re suddenly experiencing ‘normal person problems’ because they are no longer the ‘heroes’.
Suddenly losing a bit of fortitude and luck doesn’t make you lose skills you’ve developed over decades or make you suddenly unable to boil water. So either we have to reject the episode, or reject the false interpretation sent our way. I choose the latter.
Think about it (let me convince you to appease my own frustration) - Chuck is a liar. We know this. Chuck is also our narrator, in canon and meta-textually.
We know we have an unreliable narrator.
Is it not reasonable to suggest that Chuck didn’t “make them normal” or “take away their special Hero Status” and have Dean suddenly lactose-intolerant, ridden with cavities (okay that part is realistic but to suddenly feel them now?), have it so Sam, who got a full ride to Stanford University - cannot boil water and grabs hot pots with his bare hands.
Actually for that last bit - if you’ve worked in kitchen for a long time or done a large amount of cooking, the sensitivity in your hands decreases a lot. Sam might actually be able to grab things straight out of the oven for short periods of time, or grab pots by the handles off the stove without feeling the burn the way someone like me might. My partner can do shit like that, though normally at least uses a tea towel for things straight out of the oven, but i’ve seen him do it. So Sam might do that typically and that just lends itself to my theory that -
Chuck is fucking with them.
Chuck didn’t “make them normal” - he sent a bunch of annoying inconveniences their way to slow them down, and to undermine their confidence in their skills. Just enough that they think it’s them and not Him. That they think it’s their shine worn off, their luck run dry, their skills as never being as good as they thought - just enough hits to keep coming and uncomfortable facts that fit close enough to their lives to make them Doubt.
He is God, what does he do but deal in Faith and Doubt?
(He doesn’t like to be questioned. He knows them inside and out, knows everything about everything - including how to sew discord).
He took away their credit card that Charlie had hacked for them so they can’t move around as quick and easy, switched the flip on some of their biology (lactose intolerance, clumsiness, a head cold) to slow them down, fucked them up a bit in terms of the Impala (parking tickets, spark plugs) to stall them up.
Not bad luck, not a loss of Plot Armour - Chuck is playing with the narrative. He wanted Sam to give up hope in the previous episode, and now he wants to weedle at that weakness. He wants them inconvenienced and down on themselves, knows that they excel when they’re faced with violence and a Big Bad but it’s like Lilith and her ‘death by a thousand cuts’. He knows it will be easier to get under their skin with a series of minor vexations that has them questioning themselves.
They are cursed. Dean is right. Cursed with God’s Wrath - which in this case looks a bit more like God’s No Good, Super Annoying Goddamn Day(s), but y’know. Whatever.
And then there’s the skills - the inability to pick locks, to fight monsters. As if a lifetime of practice and training disappears when Plot Armour does. I cannot suspend my disbelief to accept that being Normal means having no learned skills.
So although the narrative (the narrator, Chuck, God Who Art Unreliable) is telling us that they only have these skills because He wanted them to.
We must reject that interpretation of the canon.
(Just like I wish Sam and Dean had rejected that misinterpretation of their lives.)
God waved his hand and took away skills they’d need in a pinch. He didn’t fuck with their personalities because he likes to watch too much, but he wanted to see what they’d do if he (re)set their skills to zero: if they would learn again, if they would realize how fucked they were, make bad decisions to regain those abilities, drink blood or take on Angels or anything else vile so they might kill each other. He’s trying to get his story back on track, and lying to the audience (which now, oddly, includes the protagonists) is small change next to forcing the plot the way he wants to go.
Literally, Chuck is retconning the canon because he’s written himself into a corner, and he’s jealous of his own protagonists.
(Oddly - I think he’s kind of lying to himself too. Taking all this away and convincing himself that he gave it to them all in the first place, fucking with coincidence because these things do happen and messing with their biology because other people do have these sorts of issues. He takes all the credit for their success and therefore convinces himself it’s okay to change and take away whatever he wants, to manipulate luck and chance because hey - he’s God. They are his Creation, and therefore this is All Him, really.)
Only bad writers force the plot to go where they want irrespective of what it means about the characterization and being hard left-turn OOC. Chuck is a bad writer. We know this. Without Metatron as his editor he kind of writes complete crap? Even Becky and her purple prose had multiple critiques of his writing throughout the seasons.
So tl;dr -
The Heroes’ Journey isn’t about Sam and Dean losing the ‘plot armour’ and bonus to skills that Chuck had given them to make them badasses with no Normal Person Problems.
Instead, it’s an (undoubtedly unintentional from the writers and therefore ironic) exercise in unreliable narration where the audience is told the heroes are only special because someone else made them so. The creator of the in-canon narrative is retconning his own canon and trying to tell the reader it was this way all along, underneath plot armour.
He’s also doing this because as a self-insert OC into his own story, and now the antagonist of the story who fails to realize he’s made himself the bad guy, he’s buying time, aiming to slow them down and trying to cut away at their confidence and hope.
And he succeeds - and backfires. He chips away at them only enough to frustrate, to convince them that they Are and Must Be special in order to do what needs doing. They know that they have ever lacked in heroism, and the narrator fails to convince the audience that normalcy and heroism do not go hand in hand - in part because God’s favourite or not, they aren’t the only heroes in this story.
(Thanks Garth)
PS - Building from here into 15x11, if we accept this explanation but also know they do get their “mojo” (luck) back thanks to a Goddess, we can extrapolate that although she maybe can’t undo the changes that Chuck’s thrown their way, some of what he’s doing is based on coincidence (luck), and they should be ‘lucky’ enough to be able to access their skills despite having Chuck’s bullshit placed on them (or be lucky enough to have it removed entirely?). Luck seems a shorthand term here for so much more, something more like the suppressor/bullshit Chuck’s using on them, so I take it to mean that she basically reset the balance.

Walther Arms presents a serious contender for both range and concealed carry use with its , the subcompact interpretation of its PPQ series pistols.
Features
The PPQ SC is s a pistol that packs a big dose of desirable features into a small package. Walther designers headed straight to problem-solver mode with this one, they were serious about addressing common gripes among pistol shooters and concealed carry practitioners.
Chief among the problem-solving features of the PPQ SC is truly ergonomic design. By now, striker-fired pistol fans expect modular grips. Walther delivers, providing an “average” backstrap as well as a thicker one tailored to large hands.
Just two grip choices may seem like slim pickings until one handles the pistol. A short distance from the top of the grip to the trigger make for an easy reach for most.
An extended slide lock lever, reversible mag release and massive ejection port make this a great lefty gun. (Photo: Eve Flanigan/Guns.com)
Even more impressive is the very easy-to-reach, easily operated magazine release. Walther took a chance with its fan base in departing from the company’s classic paddle release. In my opinion, the more traditional button mag release is a win, as it’s easier to use than most others. Intelligent molding, along with the option to change sides on the release, makes access by the thumb easy while making unintentional pressure from an external object, like a seatbelt, unlikely. This is one of very few pistols on which I can release the mag without dislodging my firing grip in the least. Efficient reloading is also aided by how the mags are ejected, rather than dropped, from the well. Loaded or empty, they shoot out with surprising gusto.
User-centered features don’t end there. Walther Arms employs a sensible, but rarely seen, feature in its extended slide lock. It’s all ambi, all the time. The extended lever keeps the slide lock in reach and easy to operate, even for fatigued hands. Throughout testing, the slide lock, when used as a release both right- and left-handed, sent the top round into battery without fail.
The PPQ SC’s ejection port is extraordinarily functional and will be appreciated by experienced shooters, especially southpaws. It’s a generous opening, extending past center. In terms of efficient unloading and malfunction clearances, its design makes the task as easy as possible.

Night sights are a desirable upgrade for a home- or self-protection gun, and here, the user is provided with some satisfaction. The polymer sights have a luminous three-dot sight layout, the kind that’s brighter when the gun’s been exposed to light. There are better options, and in fact steel sights are available by factory order, but these stock ones are far better than non-luminous sights. The rear sight is windage-adjustable.
Additional molded-in conveniences include cocking serrations fore and aft of the ejection port, shallow texturing on the grip, and a light rail.
Field stripping the PPQ SC is the easiest I’ve ever encountered. With the slide manually held slightly rearward, two textured, easy-to-operate buttons on each side unlink the upper and lower. The recoil spring is a two-thickness one, a contributor to a reduction in felt recoil. The guide rod is polymer— less durable but lighter than steel. Considering the company’s solid warranty, I’ve got no beef with the choice of polymer.
In yet another demonstration of answering customer demand, Walther includes three magazines. One ten-rounder has a flat floorplate; the other has a pinky shelf. An extended 15-round mag is also included, making the gun a true contender for crossover performance between range and concealment use.
Performance
In this writer’s opinion, reliability is the single most important feature of a self-protection gun. The PPQ SC has it. It cycled a mixture of brands and bullet types without fail, even with motley handfuls of ammo inserted into one magazine.
The trigger is pleasing and perfect for both protective and range work. Travel is minimal but present; the “wall” is consistently felt and easily passed. Reset is consistent and palpable. I love that this gun is ready to fire immediately upon reset, with no further forward travel required as with many other brands.

The trigger has a safety block typical for the platform, and two built-in, internal drop safeties. I would feel entirely confident carrying the PPQ SC concealed in a proper holster, both for its readiness when needed and safety when not.
A formal accuracy test wasn’t conducted; I feel they’re mostly unnecessary for a self-defense pistol where slight deviations from “bullseye” may actually be beneficial in causing rapid hydraulic pressure loss on a threat. On a four-inch plate at 12 yards, point of aim equals point of impact. Nice and simple.
Overall impressions
Walther Arms’ PPQ SC is a great, dare I say superior, choice for the shooter who wants one gun for both range and concealment. It’s also a friendly choice for small or hand-injured shooters, without compromising anything for larger and/or fully functional hands. Left-handed shooters could be flat spoiled by this one in comparison to others currently available.
There will be those who say 9mm isn’t enough, and it’ll be interesting to see if Walther adds .40 S&W or .45 ACP to the SC lineup down the road. Since the full-size iterations of this pistol can be found in .45 ACP, .40 S&W, and even .22 LR, I’m optimistic about possibilities for siblings of the SC 9mm.

The gun is, in my estimation, on the chunky side. Though it’s not heavy, it would take some effort to effectively conceal its thick profile in my customary appendix carry position. However, that same thickness makes this sub-compact handle with ease.
For an easy, reliable, feature-packed firearm that can roll right from concealment onto the range, backed by a company that promises a 48-hour turnaround on warranty work, the PPQ SC is straight up reasonable. You can find this pistol with an average price in the mid-$600s, another great reason to own one.

The vaguest recommendation I obtain earlier than leaving for Hong Kong can be the soundest: “Eat all of the issues.” To dine at a special institution (14,000 ultimately depend) for every meal daily would take greater than 14 years, and by then there could be new ones. On Hong Kong Airways, I get a teaser. For enterprise class, the Vancouver route serves dishes from award-winning Dynasty Seafood, which some say presents the most effective dim sum exterior of China. The every day flight arrives round 5 p.m., simply in dinner time.
On Hong Kong Island, Central is town’s coronary heart and the apparent place to begin exploring. I get my bearings in probably the most whimsical method: with a morning street-art tour led by Unintentional Artwork. Round corners and down again alleys, Banksy, Shepard Fairey and Invader have left their marks. You’re feeling graffiti’s impermanence most acutely, although, when viewing one of many final remaining calligraphy works by the late Tsang Tsou-choi (a.ok.a. “the King of Kowloon”) on Hong Kong’s mainland.

Additionally in Central, there’s PMQ. Quick for “Police Married Quarters,” a nod to the buildings’ previous life, it supplies inexpensive studio and retail areas for native designers. (Different cities, take be aware.) On the fourth ground of Block A, there’s Central Saint Martins grad Chailie Ho; a whiz with silk, she focuses on scarves and slinky attire. Throughout a courtyard, in Block B, Hugo Yeung and Belinda Chang run their jewelry studio, Obellery, showcasing their very own works (Yeung favours weighty geometric shapes, whereas Chang performs rather a lot with pearls) in addition to items by native and worldwide artists. Ho, Yeung and Chang additionally routinely run workshops to share their abilities with neophytes. There’s meals at PMQ, too, together with three bakeries and Michelin-star chef Jason Atherton’s Aberdeen Street Social.
A five-minute stroll down Hollywood Street is Man Mo Temple. Devoted to the Taoist God of Literature (Man) and the God of Battle (Mo), it’s particularly common amongst college students—and their mother and father, hoping for prime take a look at scores—but in addition for anybody searching for respite from the bustle. Incense wafts from all sides, even from above, the place coils of it slough off ash like clouds of snow. These in search of steerage can shake a can of numbered sticks, which correspond to fortunes; throw down a pair of crescent-shaped picket blocks for solutions to easy sure or no questions; or attempt each, which is what I do as a result of I’m uncertain about almost every little thing.
Departing from the Tai Po Market rail station, 20 kilometres northwest of Sai Kung, Hong Kong Foodie Tasting Tours information curious epicureans on progressive meals. The primary course is cheong enjoyable, steamed rice noodles that soften in my mouth, at Chan Hon Kee. There’s not a lot time to stroll that off earlier than I arrive at Yat Lok Barbecue Restaurant with its window of glistening roasted geese, that are the factor to attempt. (Anthony Bourdain’s a fan.) There’s additionally a spot for snake soup, nevertheless it’s not in season in the mean time, and, admittedly, I’m relieved. Macau-style sweets present a much-needed palate cleanse earlier than I head to the market complicated for deep-fried cuttlefish balls, steamed mullet fish and crab. Consumed on a stool exterior as nightfall turns to nighttime, a refreshing black sesame tofu dessert from Jiu Guo Xiang Lin caps off my four-hour feast. That is after I study probably the most helpful Cantonese phrase: ho bau (translation: “very full”).
