Herman Found, Greta Still Missing

I glued his bangs back on. I feel like I could do better today with the hair, but my mind is made up, this is Herman's look.

I overlooked something in that box I thought it was in. The action figure was under a piece of paper inside a smaller box within the box. I had a feeling I'd turn up something if I dug a little deeper taking another look.

This experience makes me wonder if a new set of cadet action figures should be put to use. I've thought about this a long time with Moxie, since the Cadet Troi action figure has broken arms. Years ago, I dripped pen ink on Trent, and I would have had to get a new one had Rachael not had a big bottle of acetone. This is why Trent loses his Captain Picard white lips- god knows why they gave the Captain Picard action figures that odd shade of paint on the lips, especially when sometimes, those Picard heads would start to self tan. It's wild! I wonder how many others have noticed it. There's just a tiny bit of it left on the cleft where his lips come from, so it almost looks like he has a very slight smile if you photograph it from the right angle.

I may go ahead and use that other Greta, and in all this talk about whether or not to replace the action figure, in a sense, this will be Greta #3, which is funny to me for some reason.

But, really, having Herman back may be better than Greta, because I can now get to work on reshooting the vlog scene, and get it right this time. It's wide open. I have that wonderful green art deco and wood paneling walls which I'm itching to do more with...

And I still don't really know what Moxie should blab about before going off to watch the greatest episode of DS9 of all time.

And all this is another one of those things that makes me wonder if it's time to abandon this project for good, put it out of my mind, throw out the junk that made up the boiler room set, etc.

You know, if Moxie is doing a video, she should do some of those World Famous YouTube quick cuts. You have some stupid talking head who can't form a sentence naturally, so each individual statement seems to be made up of four or five different cuts. Maybe they've cut out some of the pauses and "um's" and "ah's", and it's still technically from one take, but I just hate it...

But it might work here, as I was wanting to have a chance for it to NOT all be stop motion. FFS! This is what got me in trouble. When I was willing to do more live action and move things around with my hands and fingers and "puppet" the action figures a bit, this was more enjoyable than ALL of it having to be animated.

SO, instead of just a long, motionless shot of Moxie talking into her webcam, every few seconds, it jumps around. Like, perhaps ahead of time, she tells Herman they're going to do five takes and mix them together. So she's not just jumping around by a matter of inches, there's probably a few where she's leaning against a wall, having a smoke, eating, drinking, on the phone- she could be making plans with Greta to do TV time, and this is how we can slip in Newton. Moxie uses this as a condition of them being able to take the rest of their work day off, that they include Newton...

Now there's an idea!

I want to flesh this out further, but not here.

Dominion preview

El Desperado vs. Taiji Ishimori - This is the final match in the Best of the Super Jr. tournament; there is no time limit, and there must be a winner. Despe won A Block with a 6-3 record, and defeated B Block runner-up DOUKI in the semifinals. Ishimori finished at 7-2 atop B Block, and won the other semifinal against the A runner-up, TJP.

The winner of this match will presumably challenge SHO for the IWGP junior heavyweight championship. In the past the BOSJ winner would get his title shot at Dominion, but obviously that's not the case this time. I can only assume the title match will headline one of the shows on the next tour (June 16-July 5). Then again, Despe is promoting his own indie show, Despe Invitacional, on June 10, so it'd be wild if he won this match and challenged Sho to meet him on his own turf.

For Ishimori, this match is part of the long road to come back from a neck injury that took him out of last year's BOSJ and cost him five months of his career. But I can't really believe he's going to win and challenge a member of House of Torture, which is technically still aligned with him within Bullet Club. It'd be interesting if it happened, but I wouldn't hold my breath. To me, the logical pick here is Despe, considering New Japan is distributing his show tomorrow, and both parties would benefit if he closed this show with a go-home promo.

Jon Moxley vs. EVIL - This is Moxley's fourth defense of the IWGP world heavyweight title. Evil punked Mox out on May 11, declaring himself the next top contender, and defacing the title belt with black spray paint. This will be Evil's third shot at the belt. He's never been world champion, although in 2020 he did win the "double crown" of the heavyweight and intercontinental titles, which were later unified to create the prize Mox holds today.

This is billed as a "lumberjack deathmatch." As with any lumberjack match, a crowd of wrestlers will surround the ring, to make sure any participant who exits the ring is promptly put back between the ropes. There isn't really a rule that says whether the lumberjacks can or should rough up participants they don't like, but that's what always happens. Since it's supposed to be a deathmatch, I guess anything goes and Moxley will do some sick shit. But a deathmatch in New Japan isn't quite as violent as you'd expect from BJW, or GCW, or even AEW, so don't count on seeing broken glass and fire.

Traditionally, the lumberjacks would be a random assortment of babyfaces and heels, but in New Japan the general idea is that each participant selects his own set of enforcers. Evil's lumberjacks are his buddies from House of Torture: Ren Narita, Sho, Yujiro Takahashi, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, and Dick Togo. (As far as I know, Jack Perry won't be in town for the show, but it'd be pretty funny if he did a surprise run-in.) Moxley's side consists of his young sidekick Shota Umino and four old-timers: Yuji Nagata, Togi Makabe, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, and Tiger Mask. I like all the guys on Mox's side, but they haven't exactly convinced me they can keep the House of Torture in check.

So I think it's pretty obvious Moxley has to retain, right? I mean, they'll tease the idea of Evil winning in a fuck finish, because that's what they always do with the House of Torture. But they're not actually going to build Mox up like Superman just for him to slip on a banana peel and lose the world title to fucking Robbie Rotten. Which means the most interesting angle heading into this match is the NJPW press conference where management vowed to crack down on all the blatant cheating the House of Torture specializes in. If that wasn't just a bunch of hot air, then you'd think this would be the House of Torture's last stand, and it'll be interesting to see if the story is presented as such.

Shingo Takagi vs. HENARE - Takagi's NEVER title is on the line. Henare issued a challenge for the title on May 11, in video package announcing his return from injury. Two months earlier, the top of Henare's head was badly lacerated during the big United Empire vs. War Dogs cage match. You could tell it was bad, because they kept him off-camera for most of the match, and when he finally got back into action (!) his head was heavily bandaged up, like that one bounty hunter from The Empire Strikes Back.

Anyway, I thought Henare was scary as fuck to begin with, and that was before he got tattoos all over his face, and now the dude is coming back from nearly bleeding to death to pick a fight with Shingo. Henare's got me feeling like this is a battle between a Maori warrior and literal Japanese dragon, and I am pretty stoked for this. It'd be a great story for Henare to win the title in an epic slugfest. But I've felt that way for years, and that hasn't been enough for New Japan to push the guy. I'll be pulling for the challenger, but this match could go either way.

KENTA & Chase Owens vs. El Phantasmo & Hikuleo vs. Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI vs. Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls - Kenta and Chase are defending the IWGP heavyweight tag team title, while ELP and Hiku are defending the STRONG tag team title. This is an elimination match, so whenever one of the participants loses a fall, he and his partner must leave; the match continues until all but one team is eliminated. We're also using tornado rules, so all eight men can brawl all over the place at the same time.

Kenta/Owens and Bishamon (Goto/Yoshi) have been trading the IWGP title back and forth; meanwhile the Guerillas of Destiny and Haste/Nicholls have been fighting over the STRONG belts. Haste and Nicholls crossed the streams on May 5, when they tried to challenge the IWGP champs, and the other two teams weren't too keen about that.

This will be the fourth time in the past 14 months that one team will hold both of these tag titles. I keep thinking New Japan intends to unify them, but it never happens. Indeed, earlier this week they announced that all the STRONG-branded championships would be exclusive to the US market going forward. Okay, cool, but that clearly wasn't the plan when you guys booked this double title match in Japan. I can't even begin to predict a winner for this, because I can't understand the direction of the titles.

Jeff Cobb vs. Tomohiro Ishii - Cobb won the NJPW World television championship last month, and Ishii stepped up to get the first title shot. This title is always defended within a fifteen-minute time limit. Cobb's big thing these days is complaining that anybody can just walk up to Jon Moxley and demand a world title shot. For some reason, he's not bothered at all that Ishii received this title shot by just walking up to Cobb and demanding it. I think Cobb should retain, although I'm not sure where he's headed unless he's going to challenge Moxley.

Hiroshi Tanahashi & Toru Yano & Boltin Oleg vs. Yota Tsuji & Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI - Tana's team is defending the NEVER trios title. Tsuji's team (along with Titan) defeated the champs (along with Dragon Dia) in an eight-man tag match on June 3, to set up this title bout. Oleg looks to be as big as Hiromu and Bushi put together, so the challengers are at a bit of a disadvantage. I'd like to see Tsuji's team win some gold, but it's just the trios title so it doesn't make much difference who ends up with it. I can't pick a winner here.

Yuya Uemura vs. Great-O-Khan - Uemura defeated Khan for the KOPW title on April 27, so this is the rematch. Whoever, holds the title at the end of the year will be the KOPW 2024 champion. The rules for this match prohibit strikes of any kind; all offense must be limited to holds and throws. Going out of bounds--by exiting the ring or by using the ropes to escape a hold--is discouraged: Each participant is only allowed to do it twice, and after that it's an immediate disqualification. Oh, and there's a fifteen-minute time limit. I guess it'll be fun to watch these guys grapple for a while, but I've spent more time writing down the rules than I'm going to spend thinking about this match. Uemura should retain.

Zack Sabre Jr. & Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita vs. Clark Connors & Drilla Moloney & LJ Cleary - This is a preview of Connors/Moloney vs. Eagles/Fujita for the IWGP junior tag title, scheduled for June 16. Cleary is part of the Good Looking Guys faction in Pro Wrestling NOAH, which apparently has some sort of alliance with the War Dogs. Seems like Sabre's team should win here, unless they want to showcase Cleary for some reason.

Tetsuya Naito vs. Callum Newman - Newman spent the Best of the Super Jr. tour angling for a one-on-one match against Naito. Naito seems to find that kind of ridiculous. I tend to agree, since Newman looks to be 120 pounds if he was soaking wet with a brick in his pants. Usually when they do this sort of thing the young upstart gets clobbered, and then he reminisces about it seven years later when their paths cross again and the odds are very different. I expect this match to follow that pattern.

I have an au i've been referring to as 'Magus' or 'Layered Reality' in my notes, idk what the story will actually be called but i've been brainrotting over it particularly hard recently so i'm gonna talk about it

Namely because Blue is a little FREAK and I love him :3

So I love soulmate aus, and I love Yanderes, but you know what we need more of? MUTUAL YANDERES so you know this shit is gonna get wild when the entire premise is combining all three. Be aware, most are gonna be low-key about their obsession or it's only going to show up later on so some of the characters may seem like normal well adjusted individuals... they are not

Y/n, or 'Magus' as they're know to the wider public, is a prominent masked public figure that showed up out of the blue and broke the barrier. And then Kept showing up randomly when the underground seemingly re-filled with monsters with a new barrier in place. They're like a volunteer firefighter, but for the royal guard. They aren't officially hired or anything, but they most often work directly with a team of guards or are often called in as backup by others if Magus is in the area and able to help. Technically the only calls Magus has to answer/missions they have to attend are any having to do with the barriers.

See, in this world a cluster of universes collided, the effect being imperceptible as the humans of said universes were all the same and fused into one person. The difference lied underground, where because they're so different the universes couldn't merge seamlessly like they did up top and so, thanks to the barrier keeping the underground isolated, the undergrounds became isolated instances layered on top of each other. With the breaking of the barrier and emptying of the underground the mountain destabilizes and the next layer of the universe fills its place to rectify this now that the space is open.

This mean that Magus, being the fusion of all the versions of themself, is soulmates with ALL of the skeleton brothers. Now, soulmates are kind of a forgotten art in this world, it's a type of magic and most humans, having forgotten magic, don't know they exist. Most monsters don't pay much mind to it either since it's more nebulous than media makes it out to be. Your souls draw you together to meet, no matter what a meeting Will happen as that is destiny, but what happens after depends on if the individuals can hold onto that connection or even notice it in the first place. People who specialize in soulmate magic are like fortune tellers, they can't tell you specifics but they Can tell you what kind of mark your destined will leave on you or what their mark on you says if it's a word/name/sentence.

Magus has a special connection to soulmate magic, being naturally attuned to it as they see their soulmates in dreams (I have the same soulmate system set up in other works), it's actually how they learn magic and Become a mage in a modern post-magic world. Rus (sf!papyrus) teaches them via dreams because he's also a dreamer and the connection lets them talk! That is until they grow up and become teenagers and suddenly Rus cuts Magus off, creating a literal wall between them whenever they meet in dreams so they can't speak. Magus believes this is because they've become a mage and that he hates them for it. That's not why, but it's what they assume. And they hold that assumption for Years.

I could go more into Magus' story and why they become a Yandere, but the crux of it is that they are so starved for love and so single-mindedly focused on protecting their soulmates and being with them someday that morality kind of falls to the wayside. They think the only way they can show their love for the time being is by ensuring their soulmates are safe and happy from the shadows. They are a protective and doting yandere, what their love says goes. Of course, they can keep it cool and are very good at acting like they are perfectly normal to the point nobody suspects they so much as care about the skeletons, much less favor them over others.

Bringing Magus' job back up, they mainly work for the Underfell branch of the guard. Their direct partner is Fell Undyne, who is very obviously trying to kill them or at least get them hurt. The animosity between the fell monsters and Magus is especially obvious, as lots are still pretty iffy with humans and of course would hate mages especially. Why does Magus work with them then? Because it's safer working with obvious threats then one of the other branches filled with people who may try to get their guard down before leaving them for dead. They know to keep on their toes and won't slip up. Of course, not all fell monsters are assholes or hate Magus just for being a mage, just like not all tale monsters are nice. So there are some people Magus is chill with. The one they trust the most in their group? Red (uf!sans)

This dude is too busy and tired with his own shit to care. This friendship actually comes about in the strangest of ways thanks to a forgotten closet office. It's a small office that was obviously a closet before being renovated, nobody uses it so it's the Perfect secret nap spot. There's a beanbag chair in there and everything! Neither knew the other used the office until Red teleported to the beanbag and landed right on top of a napping Magus. They agreed to keep quiet about it and share the office. (Either that or it's Red's office but he almost never uses it so Magus had no idea it was his office until he dropped in on them)

Edge (uf!paps) is also chill, he doesn't care so long as you prove yourself and don't get in his way. Magus simps for has a deep respect for him as coworkers, though they don't work with him often as he's not on their team, they do see each other in the office. (It's not all action, someone has to write those field reports!)

Now onto Blue(us!sans)- yanberry will forever be ingrained into my heart and mind so you cannot tell me he wouldn't be BATSHIT as a yandere. This man craves blood. So anyways, Blue believes in soulmates- having the type where when you lock eyes you can see colors. He's been Red-Green colorblind all his life until meeting Magus, his fascination with blood kind of stemming from it. From the moment his eye's met Magus' he was hooked and is Always trying to call them whenever his team needs backup. He is a Magus supporter, if Magus has no fans assume he is dead. Everyone close to him knows him as the #1 Magus Fan and he is tied for the most devoted to finding out who Magus is. This man has a whole conspiracy board covered with colored string and news snippets about them as well as blurry pictures and whatever he can find related to them. It's his shrine in disguise except there is no disguise but he insists everything on it is imperative to his research.

When they do work together Blue and Magus are Absolutely. Fucking. Terrifying. This is not an exaggeration, this is an action drama aside from the romance and they mow through people like it's nothing. There is a specific joint move in my head where Magus traps a person in a barrier box with a floating lid and Blue runs up, jumps, and slams his giant hammer on the lid and it crushes the victim like a fucking hydraulic press- like a fucked up game of whack-a-mole. Magus is chill as ever and Blue is smiling and cheerful like always as they high-five a job well done. They look at the others like 'What? Did some get on us?' I swear Blue is normal around other people, he's actually really good at pretending to be normal, it's just that sometimes you're in the middle of a shootout and a brawl and the place is covered in red and the adrenaline gets to you and your crush is Right There so Of Course you gotta impress them! Y'know? The fells are terrified and also respect it. Blues own team? He might be sent home and put on probation with a psych evaluation pending.

Then there's Black (sf!sans). He's the one tied with Blue in trying to discover Magus' identity. He was originally ordered to follow Magus in secret and find out where they live as well as their true motive to helping the monsters, this of course led nowhere as Magus has multiple failsafes and waypoints to teleport between to get home that prevent them from being followed. But now it's become a game, a challenge, even after the order drops Black continues to follow Magus at every opportunity, even enlisting Rus' help to follow them for him and report back anything interesting (which is everything, he wants to know Everything.) Magus is, of course, Aware of this as they've recognized the siren's call of their soulmate's souls. Even if they don't know exactly whose it is until they meet face to face and memorize the signature, they at least know a soulmate is around and following them.

And that's the true purpose of this au, i thought it'd be hilarious if the skeletons were being creeps in the shadows and MC already knows. They can tell when the guys are around and following them, can sense their magic on anything they let them borrow, can sense the residual trace of their magic on the table they left their missing pencil on. Magus Knows, and finds this development and behavior absolutely Adorable. They hold all the cards and have just as much power and sway as the skeletons, but the skeletons don't know that Magus is stalking them back. There are things the skeletons put together or know that Magus doesn't, but in this regard Magus is the mastermind.

Not everyone falls for Magus though, some fall for the sweet human Y/n that they met at volunteer events. Y/n is very active in the community and is a staple for all the charity projects whenever a new mountain is opened. Since Ebott isn't stable the monsters have to move out fast before the next underground takes it's place, but often don't have anywhere to go yet so the community comes together to provide things like blankets, food, and other resources for the first couple nights camping out. Of course, over time the monster government has learned and prepares housing in advance but sometimes it isn't enough quite yet or it takes a couple days to get everyone moved in. Some may just take the opportunity to camp under the stars for once. Either way, Y/n has been at every one and quite a few skeles have fallen for them after meeting. In fact, most of them have! It's only Blue and Black that have fallen solely for their Magus persona, Red is in the middle as he fell for Y/n but also has been getting closer to Magus. He is fully ready to chat up both before realizing they're the same person. He only partially laments the loss of two hot partners but, according to him "they're sexy enough i can let it slide" lol

Magus' daily life as Y/n is where we see the skeletons trying to cozy up and flirt their way into their life the most as well as most of the yandere behavior as Y/n has Sans, Stretch(us!paps), and Red all actively stalking them. Papyrus too to a lesser degree as he knows Y/n as Undyne and Alphys' human friend that he always seems to just miss whenever he goes over. There is more story to that but this is already long and I haven't even gotten to all of the aus in play because for one time only- we've got dusttale in this bitch

Dust? Oh no dear reader- Magus fucking hates him and he feels the same! At first. No no, in this story his dead brother is one of THE main characters :3c I call him Phantom. See, Magus has 4 main types if magic they specialize in. Soulmate and Healing magic is what they're naturally attuned to, but Barrier magic is what they've studied the most. And when they learned The Barrier required the power of 7 human souls to break, they thought to themself 'you know what type of magic is perfect for acquiring human souls? Necromancy.' So they learned the basics of necromancy to gather the necessary soul power to break the barrier from the outside. But summoning the undead kind of leaves your soul open to possession if you aren't careful, wandering spirits may latch onto it as a source of energy to feed off of. Can you guess who latched onto Magus' soul? They later worked out a genuine pact and contract where Phantom could be called upon whenever and would also get more access to magic in exchange. But yeah, i meant it when I said soulmates are destined to meet no matter what, not even Death can prevent your fated meeting.

Phantom is very smug that he's already soul married to Magus before the others even got a date. He's The Worst, I love him with all my heart and soul. He is bonkers from the isolation of death and doesn't want to share with the living because they're alive and he's insecure. Only he puts this on Magus like 'hey you should totally die and join me as a ghost so the others can't have you :3' and Magus just sighs and grounds him from cuddles for the day. If Magus is in a life threatening situation he is completely chill about it because 'oh hey ghost time! =D' and then he'll pout when they make it out alive. Magus has to remind him there's no guarantee they'd be a ghost and that both of them would basically up and dissapear if it happened. He's a little delusional that it'll work out perfectly and they'll be ghosts together in the afterlife without all the struggling to stay together to not fade away he'd gone through before 6-6 =_='' he has redeeming qualities I swear. To be clear though, Dust seeing his brother's ghost is a hallucination and manifestation of his grief as in canon. Because Magus is a necromancer i thought it'd be interesting if he's just Also an actual ghost at play in the story. So like, Dust will be looking off into space talking with his brother and Y/n will be across the room with Phantom at her side and looking between them because they can't Say anything, but Magus being a necromancer reaffirmed that ghosts are real so people believe Dust that his brother's ghost is haunting him. It's a whole thing. Dust please get therapy. Magus doesn't like him because he killed his brother, yes they're taking sides in this, that's their husband. Don't expect much from dust, he's gonna get sidelined hard if I actually write this, I just wanted his brother lol. He'd rather die than date a human mage anyways after all he went through which is fair.

The introduction of the Horror bros is where things start really kicking off (though i have like 5 different concept timelines, this is the main one) it's when Blue first meets Magus and falls head over heels seeing them covered in blood and dust, it's when Black sees part of Magus' face and decides to put their mask back on rather than taking a closer peak and a picture- as Magus is unconscious and he feels he hasn't earned it. He didn't do anything, he just showed up. It was too easy. He wanted them to show him. It's when the horror bros show up obviously, and Chef (ht!paps) Immediately leaves his mark And sees under the mask so he's leagues ahead of the others right off the bat. Bones (ht!sans) is a little behind him in the uptake, i'm not sure he's realized they're also his soulmate too yet- they just seem kind of familiar in a way he can't place but he's glad his bro is happy. It's also when Magus and Phantom either first meet or create their pact. I need to refresh my memory but lots of things come together and start falling apart when the horrorbros come into play :3

Eventually they'll all live together in concerning unorthodox harmony but for now there are secrets and drama to be had!

In this story, Sigurd is alive. Ragnar and Aslaug are dead, but Lagertha didn't kill her. I took a lot of liberties with the show, I hope you won't mind.

Unlike the tale, there will be no magic involved. Not everything will be realistic, however. It's a fayritale, after all!

Ivar yawns, rubbing his eyes, when he suddenly hears the front door open. The next moment, Ubbe shouts, "Hey baby bro, we're home!"

Slightly confused, Ivar looks at the time on his computer. Stunned, he blinks repeatedly, shakes his head and checks the time again, now looking at his watch. "Guess I lost track of time," he mumbles as he realizes it's really 5:30 pm. He clears his throat. "I'm coming!"

Yawning once more, he wheels to the kitchen. Hvitserk waves at him with one hand as Ubbe greets him with a grin and Sigurd... Well, Sigurd ignores him, as usual.

"Hello boys!" Lagertha smiles as she also enters the kitchen. "Did you go to the beach this afternoon?" It's a rethorical question, since sand can be seen on the tanned skin of his brothers, shirtless and wearing only swimming shorts.

When she looks down at him, her smile becomes softer. "Ivar, you seem tired. Did you work all day long?"

He nods, glad that for once she called him by his first name and not by one of those stupid nicknames that she likes but that make his skin crawl.

"Yep," he shrugs without smiling back, "I made good progress. The new version of your website is almost done. It could probably be online by the end of the week."

His stepmom flashes him a beaming smile. "Great, thanks!"

The conversation then moves on to the subject that everyone in Kattegat has been talking about for the last few days: the midsummer party thrown by their neighbor Harald Hårfager. Every June, it is Kattegat's not-to-be-missed event, to which every resident hopes to be invited.

Lagertha is invited every year, yet rarely attends; his brothers wouldn't miss it, not in a million years; Ivar never went.

He listens with half an ear as his brothers prattle on about the upcoming party, while taking a seat at the large, wooden kitchen table on which Lagertha has just put cakes and drinks.

"What are you going to wear?"

"Do you think Marit will attend this year?"

"Hopefully the music will be better than last year."

"Can't be as bad! What was the name of that reggae band?"

For a fleeting moment, Ivar entertains the thought of attending as well. Not that he's dying to, but… Sometimes, he feels a little bit like Cinderella in this house.

Don't get him wrong, it's not that bad.

First, his stepmom is not–

Wait, wait, wait, is Lagertha technically his stepmom? He's not sure. After all, she wasn't when his parents were alive, she was just his father's first wife. Anyway, she may be his guardian now, but he sees her as his stepmom and he honestly doesn’t give a shit if it's a little weird.

Where was he? Oh yes, Cinderella.

So obviously, Lagertha is not a wicked, haughty and abusive stepmom like this Lady Tremaine of the fairytale.

Actually, even if it pisses him off to admit it, she's pretty nice, patient and composed. Does he love her? Let's not exaggerate – he doesn't. She may love him though, which is a little bit uncanny, if he's being honest. He was the favorite son of her nemesis. Shouldn't she hate him? He would, if the situation was reversed.

The truth is, when he was younger, he tried, he really tried to hate her, blaming her for everything and anything. When too much pain prevented him from sleeping, he let his imagination run wild. There, bound to his bed of suffering, he could see Lagertha cutting the brakes on his mother's car, causing her crash, causing her death.

Of course, even then, he knew deep down that Lagertha had not killed his mother; that the story he told himself was just the product of his endless nights of insomnia. But what can he say? He needed this. Because blaming Lagertha rather than admitting that his beloved mother was at fault – by being distracted, or by falling asleep, he'll never know – was easier for the heartbroken boy he was.

Anyway... So yes, Lagertha is definitely not an evil stepmother like Cinderella's.

Also, he doesn't sleep on a sorry garret, on a wretched straw bed either.

Actually, he has a very large room on the main floor, with a king-size memory foam bed, a walk-in – well, a wheel-in for his case – closet and his own, huge bathroom, fully equipped for his special needs.

Sure, the bathroom and the dressing room were already there when his parents were alive; however, the memory foam mattress had been Lagertha's idea.

Anyway... So yes, he can't exactly complain about his sleeping conditions, unlike Cinderella.

And obviously, he's not forced into servitude.

Actually, one might think so, but no, he's not. Sure, sometimes he works for his stepmom, like today. But so do his brothers. When she had taken them in, she was a powerful businesswoman, working twelve to fourteen hours a day. Once she had become their guardian, she had rearranged her working time and learned to delegate; but even so, she had often run out of time. Therefore, it had seemed normal to them – yes, even to him – to help her out, each of them according to their skills and abilities.

So, while Hvitserk almost always does the grocery shopping, while Sigurd vacuums and does the laundry, while Ubbe mows the lawn and trim the bushes, he, Ivar, runs her company's website and sometimes even does the accounting. And since he loves computers and numbers, it's not exactly a problem.

Anyway... So yes, he's not a slave in this house. Unlike Cinderella.

So, yes, to sum it up, he can't really complain and he's by far not Cinderella. And he knows it.

But... Yes, there's a but...

Sometimes, he feels trapped, as poor Cinderella must have felt.

Sometimes he feels like a spectator of a life he doesn't belong to.

Sure, he doesn't have to be homeschooled – but gods, he's glad he is. The reasons for him to be continuously bullied by classmates are endless. The simplest ones being: he is a cripple, an orphan, the son of a dead mob boss, the smartest one in the whole damn school, let alone his class. Take your pick. It's no fun, no fun at all. Being home alone is preferable to that alternative.

Therefore, barely leaving the house except for medical appointments, he has no friends. He doesn't do sports either – obviously – and yeah, he lives a lonely life, filled with video games and Netflix series. And he's okay with that. Well, most of the time.

Sure, his brothers, or at least Ubbe and Hvitserk, always try to include him as much as possible. But the truth is that because of his legs, there are many, many things he just can't do.

And the other truth, the less pleasant one, is that he partially did that to himself. He cut himself off from a world that hurt him, yet he still misses this world sometimes. At times, he blames himself. Because his life, honestly, is hardly what you would call a life, is it? Not when you're sixteen.

That's why sometimes, like now, he feels this longing, almost a need, to live. To really, truly, fully live. And that's why, for a brief moment, lulled by the light chitchat of his brothers, he considers attending Harald's midsummer party.

But he knows better. This life is not for him, never has been, never will be.

And so, shaking his head, he chases the thought away and, placing his hands on his push rims, he's about to leave the kitchen while the incessant babbling of his brothers goes on.

"I can't wait."

"Don't tell me! As every year, the most beautiful girls of Kattegat will be there."

"Remember that burger food truck? Best burgers ever!"

"I've heard Y/N would be attending this year."

"There'll be booze and girls! Sounds like Valh–"

Wait. His mind goes blank.

Fuck.

What? Did he hear right?

As he replays his brother's words in his head, it's like there's an earthquake happening inside of him.

Fuck.

He stops breathing. Blinks, then clamps his eyes shut.

Fuck.

When he finally manages to draw air into his lungs, he swallows loudly before asking in a weird, high-pitched voice, his heart pounding in his chest, "What– What did you say, brother?"

Hvitserk turns his head toward him and shrugs. "I just said there'll be boo–"

"No, not you!" Ivar snaps at his brother, pointing his pointer finger at Ubbe. "You, what did you fucking say?" Out of the corner of his eye, he can see Lagertha frowning – 'no curse words in this house, boys'– and even if he barely contains an eye roll, he still mouths a quick 'sorry' at her before rewording his question, impatience coursing through him. "What did you say, dear brother? Who did you say would attend?"

Stunned, Ubbe looks at him with wide eyes. "Y/N? I said Y/N would come. That's what I heard anyway. She's Harald's niece. She was here once, right? Remember her, baby bro, huh?"

But Ivar is no longer listening, the blood draining from his face. Y/N... Y/N... Fuck. Finally. Fucking finally. After so long... He may see you again. Wow.

I'll go! I'll fucking go!

He barely contains the words, suddenly acutely aware of the deafening silence in the room, his brothers shamelessly staring at him.

With her brows furrowed and her lips turned downward in a slight frown, Lagertha takes two steps forwards before crouching down in front of him. "Are you all right, sweetie? You're a little pale."

He barely hears when Sigurd giggles, "A little pale? He's greener than an alien!"

Lagertha shoots Sigurd a dirty look and then gently cups Ivar's cheek. "Do you know her, Ivar? Do you know Y/N?"

Overwhelmed, self-conscious, freaked out, caught off-guard, he doesn't know how to respond. Should he tell the truth? Should he lie? His brothers will mock him, for sure. What is the point of telling the truth? What good would it do? On the other hand, he could really use some advice. Yeah. Sure. Advice from Sigurd. Just the thought of it is enough to make him sick. Fuck, what is he going to do?

Rushed words are out of his mouth before he can even gather his thoughts. "No. No. I don't. I mean, yes, I think I do but–" He's being pathetic and he hates it. So after a sharp intake of breath, he shakes his head and eventually replies in a flat, calm voice, the white lie rolling off his tongue. "I know her, but I thought Ubbe was talking about someone else. Sorry."

With these words, he hastily leaves the room, his eyes riveted on his knees, his heart still drumming in his chest.

My very first redraw from my very first edit posted here, so it deserves an honorable mention. Back then I was young and inexperienced, I didn't even apply a gray filter (lmao I was so unskilled I even unintentionally scratched the picture, I hadn't realized until today). I'm actually very happy my first redraw was of Don, boy deserves all the love.

#2: Emma and Ray - Chapter 140: I’m Here!

Back then this looked like so much work to me!!! And to this day, I think it turned out pretty well. I'm particularly proud of how the bow turned out. This is one I was really proud of right after having finished it; it gave me the confidence to try redrawing bigger areas. Also, the edit were I first applied the opacity of layer / opacity of brush for the gray filter that would have stuck with me.

#4: Emma, Norman and Ray - Chapter 153: Coward

Probably the single panel redraw I'm the most proud of. That Norman panel was beautiful and very poignant at the end of a chapter I adored, so I believe it deserved all the time I've spent working on it. It's far from being perfect - the back of his head is too plain, and the difference between my brushes and the original brushes is pretty visible - but I still like it very much and am extremely attached to it. The horn looks kinda big but I honestly believe it to be more of an issue with the original than with what I had redrawn lol. Funny enough, the whole picture didn't make it to the final edit and had to be trimmed.

#3: Emma - Chapter 174: A New World (part 1)

I think the panels that were selected work very well together, especially considering the close-up / full body alternation. I love Emma, and I've always been kinda sad noticing that edits that focus one her take the less notes... She deserves all the love. Also, fun fact: for the last but one panel, I had redrawn Emma's whole left ear before remembering she doesn't have one, so I had to redraw the panel from the start. Besides from the error with the ear, the reason why this (and all the others after) took so long is because official panel take way longer to clean.

#4: Isabella and her children - Chapter 177: Mother

Lmao tbh I can't understand how this has so few notes it's like. Technically speaking, probably the best edit I've ever done. I don't even like Isabella that much, I haven't got the slightlest idea why I decided to spend so many hours on this. Anyway, I find the composition (full body on the left / headshots on the right) really good looking in this as well! And I think the redraws turned out fine, especially Isabella's.

#5: The Promised Neverland manga ending countdown→ 1/7 chapters: chapter 1 - Grace Field House

I like how it turned out and I'm pretty satisfied with the redraws (even though my sister helped me with the lineart of some panels - it was exams time and I really couldn't afford to spend more time on it), too bad we didn't have more chapters that focused on the boys. Ray sweetie one day I'll fix your ear it's just today's not that day.

Btw, I justed realized I have never done an Emma / Norman centered edit? I'll have to make one eventually. I remember considering focusing on them alone for the chapter 154 one, but then I thought "even if the manga is gonna ignore Ray, I will chose to do not" lol.

TOP 10 NINTENDO SWITCH GAMES 2019 - my arbitrary list!

Sometimes it's good to be proven wrong. I was pretty sceptical when the Switch was first announced, as it didn't seem too different from the Wii U's gamepad. Then I spent two years watching Nintendo enjoy a complete reversal of fortune, to the point of potentially amassing a more compelling library than Sony's or Microsoft's consoles. So that's how I quite suddenly found myself buying a Switch in October 2019, after having resisted the PS4 and Xbone for five whole years, and my free time has since been dominated by this little machine that defied the odds.

Some of Nintendo's business decisions can still seem inexplicable, but releasing a powerful handheld console that can also be docked with a TV at a moment's notice has proved to be an inspired idea, rather than the gimmick the Wii U's gamepad mostly turned out to be. And along with Nintendo's dependable series of top-notch exclusives, the Switch has enjoyed much better third-party support, which is how I ended up buying Dark Souls for the fourth bloody time just because the option to play it portably was too tempting to resist.

The Switch is the first console I've bought since the PS3 and for all Nintendo's quirks, there's a reason the Switch has dominated Christmas wishlists for three years running. Games like Super Mario Odyssey feel like full-size adventures that just happen to have a portable option, as opposed to handheld games you can also play on the big screen. This is the first year in a long while that I've actually played enough topical titles to justify a "games of the year" list, even if my recent Nintendo bias is pretty blatant.

So with that caveat in mind, and in no particular order, here's my entirely subjective list of the best Nintendo Switch games of 2019.

Luigi's Mansion 3

This is a franchise I'd always been curious about and can finally have an opinion on. The process of going from floor to floor of the hotel hoovering up ghosts and solving puzzles is pretty straightforward, but Luigi's Mansion 3 has so much polish and personality crammed into the cartridge. Luigi is immediately lovable as a determined coward, and each level has a wildly different theme that's realised with extravagant audio and visual flair, so progress always feels rewarding. Though this isn't true horror by any means, there can be an unsettling atmosphere and some of the bosses are pretty freaky. I officially love this oddball franchise and am desperate for a chance to play the story again in co-op. Unquestionably a first-class exclusive.

Doom (Switch port)

Not to be confused with the impressive Switch version of Doom 2016, this is the iconic Doom made cheap and accessible. While purists may take issue with some minor technical deviations, this is the first time I've got most of the way through Doom because the portability and *glorious* true dual-stick control makes this easily my favourite version. There's even a cheat menu for when I just want to mindlessly punch hell beasts. The main thing that ages Doom is its maze-like structure, but playing it casually experience alleviates that frustration somewhat. At a grand total of four pounds, this is a BFB (big fucking bargain).

Untitled Goose Game

You know a game is good when the only asterisk I put on my recommendation is that it *may* be overpriced. Untitled Goose Game took the internet by storm this year because it's the quintessential indie game: cute, simple and with anti-authoritarian undertones. As a horrible goose, it's your mission to cause havoc in an unsuspecting English village, interacting with people and objects to cause chain reactions of chaos. Some of the puzzle solutions are maybe a bit obscure, but 90% of the time just messing around with everything in the area will lead to a solution. Untitled Goose Game makes up for its brevity with sheer comedic charm, feeling much better-designed than a "lul so random" affair like Goat Simulator. A honking good time.

Terraria (Switch port)

I have spent literally hundreds of hours on the PC version of Terraria, so when I was broke after buying my Switch the new Terraria port was an obvious cost-effective choice. While the controls aren't as precise, the amount of time spent mining and sorting through loot makes this a great handheld experience. I can't comment on the multiplayer options but few games represent such a sheer value for money, as there's always a new cave to explore or a new boss to overcome. Time has been kind to this 2011 classic, grind notwithstanding.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair

While I personally enjoyed the original Yooka-Laylee, it was definitely flawed and I never seriously expected to see a sequel. But Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair launched quite abruptly and did a pretty spectacular job of upstaging its predecessor. All the previous game's half-baked feel has been replaced with clever design touches, like the equippable tonics which grant helpful abilities at the cost of a currency penalty. The titular Lair is actually the final level and available to throw yourself at right from the beginning, but beating it without first obtaining more hitpoints by completing other stages is incredibly hard, which is a great way to incentivize progress without denying more confident players the option of beating the game earlier if they can meet the challenge. Impossible Lair might be this year's biggest surprise, and despite a modest budget I think it's worthy of comparison to excellent 2D platformers like Rayman Legends. Just don't expect to defeat Capital B on your first attempt.

A Hat In Time (Switch port)

I recently reviewed A Hat In Time but at the risk of repeating myself, it's one of the most charming games of the last few years and an incredibly impressive crowdfunded achievement. Mario's offerings may be a grander technical feat, but A Hat In Time is a fast and fabulous journey through a series of weird and wonderful worlds that all feel distinct in content and tone. It's very openly inspired by GameCube-era platformers like Mario Sunshine and Psychonauts and it easily scratches that itch. Simply one of the best original platformers of this generation, and I defy you not to love Hat Kid's cheeky antics.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy (Switch port)

As someone who thinks the original Spyro trilogy holds up better than most early 3D games, I'd have actually preferred a simple port rather than a full remake, but The Reignited Trilogy is honestly impeccable. The updated visuals are gorgeous while maintaining the general style of those old, jaggy models, and very little of the gameplay or content has changed except for sensible updates like the ability to immediately warp between every level you've visited. Having full dual-analogue control is also an absolute godsend even for a PS1 veteran like me. Though Spyro may seem a bit basic these days when faced with modern platformer marvels, the Reignited Trilogy makes these old favourites accessible again at a generous price point.

Ring Fit Adventure

Yes, I have a Wii kicking around in a box somewhere. No, Wii Fit never held my attention as anything more than a curiosity. Ring Fit Adventure, meanwhile, is limited only by my cholesterol-encrusted heart and dislike of excessive showering. This is an honest-to-goodness attempt at making an RPG out of a workout toy, and the amount of polish put into the game's presentation and hardware implementation is pretty remarkable. Levels involve jogging on the spot and squeezing the ring accessory to collect goodies and overcome obstacles, and periodically you'll engage in turn-based combat where you use a custom selection of exercise moves to deal damage. It's a fantastic idea pulled off much more elegantly than it sounds. The ring accessory unfortunately makes this quite an expensive game, so it'll take a lot of regular use to get your money's worth, but I can honestly (and surprisingly) say that exercise suddenly becomes more compelling when it's presented as a light RPG adventure with anthropomorphic gym equipment encouraging you to take breaks and drink plenty of water.

Pokémon Sword/Shield

Disclaimer: I can only give my impressions from 25 hours of playing Pokémon Shield, so this is DEFINITELY not a full review. That being said, this is still an easy recommendation to existing Pokemaniacs and a good starting point for any new acolytes. While the core formula hasn't evolved (har har) much since the very first Pokemon, Sword and Shield still has a number of modern quality of life improvements that make previous generations show their age. I've had so much fun building a core crew of cute and/or badass 'mons in a weird Nintendo version of Britain, and the online features combine with a VASTLY improved random encounter system to make grinding far less of a concern. The wild area takes some getting used to, but it's satisfying to come back and capture the huge Onyx you had to run away from a few hours before. Even if Pokémon Sword/Shield has some technical blemishes and could have pushed the series further in some regards, it's still easy to see why this franchise has maintained such a beloved status for so long.

Red Faction: Guerrilla Re-mars-tered (Switch port)

Along with Dark Souls, Red Faction was a game I never even knew I needed on the go, but now I've got it I can't imagine ever going back. A cult classic due to its amazing destruction physics, Red Faction sees you leading a proletariat revolution on Mars, literally tearing down corporate monuments to free the working class from systematic oppression. The open world is a bit claustrophobic and the shooting isn't exactly mind-blowing, but there's a reason I've beaten Red Faction every couple of years ever since its original 2009 release. The Switch port does the game justice and if you set the difficulty to easy then this is one of the best rage-venting experiences money can buy. So yes, I recommend getting your ass to Mars.
