First Degree Burns Part 1
Pairing: Firefighter!Dean x Reader (eventually)
Summary: Firefighter!AU. Dean is the new firefighter than has recently moved in, unbeknownst to you. You hear screaming and shouting outside of your house and waste no time to help those in need. You find out your neighbour’s son is still in the house and run in to save him. But can you?
Beta: @misticty
Word Count: 2031
A/N – For @thing-you-do-with-that-thing ’s favourite things challenge with the prompt: Firefighter!AU. I was in a rush this morning so I’ve only just edited this
All you could hear was the screams from outside, the golden yellow and orange hues blinded you, the vibrants colour contrasted with the darkness of the night, as you looked out of your door to see what the commotion was.
You weren’t expecting your neighbours’ home to be set on fire, black smoke above the house that threatened to collapse if it hit a weak spot.
The older, more frail, woman was outside screaming for help. There was no hesitation in your actions and you slipped on a pair of sneakers and exited your own house, running as quickly as you could to the site. The woman’s breath came in heavy heaves, barely allowing her to give you a comprehensive sentence.
‘Who’s in there? Where are they?’ You screamed at the top of your lungs, to get her to listen to you over the others that had gathered outside of the unfortunate house.
'My boss’s son, he’s trapped in his room. Please. Please we have to get him.’
'What’s his name?’
She cried, 'Sam!’
You place your hands on her shoulders in an attempt to calm her frantic, hysterical behaviour. When she looked you dead in the eye, a tear escaped her. She was silently begging you to help her.
'Call 911! Get the ambulance and the fire department and tell them the address of this place.’
'But-’
'Just do it!’ You called over your shoulder as you ran straight into the burning building, only following your natural instincts to go in there and save the child you hadn’t even met yet.
Dean was at the station still, another twenty four hour shift still in play, it was tiring no doubt but he loved his job.
He had always wanted to be a firefighter. Dean had dressed up as one when he was younger, telling everyone around him that he was going to be the best fireman than there was. And he damn well was the best one in the whole of his state. He and his team were fast and reliable to get to the damaging destination as quickly as they could.
As time went by, Dean seemed to fall in love with the job even more than when he was a child.
He understood the job in more detail, knowing now that there was rewards and consequences, not just enjoying what you do.
Sitting at the circular table, putting on the best stoic face he could, trying not to give anything away. Dean sat across from Benny, adjacent to Ash and Garth, all had cards in their hand. The centre of the table filled with poker chips of different colours. Money was never paid but who lever had the least chips at the end of the game, and the end of the week, would have to pay for the pizza on a Friday night.
Benny had finally lost his cool and folded the cards; he was out. Garth had been busted, which left Dean and Ash to face off.
'500.’ Ash picked up the right amount of chips then carelessly threw them into the pile, where the other chips lie.
Dean lifts an eyebrow and tilts his head, an impressed frown planted on his lips. He fingers play with the chips. Grabbing the pile as a whole and releasing them individually, the chips clinking as they hit the one below.
'Raise. I’m in.’
Dean had smirked when Ash laid down two nines and three jacks. He had played off that he had lost with up curl in his lips and a false snarl.
Just as he was about to spread out his royal flush, Jo and Ellen came rushing in, the doors banging loudly and colliding with a crash on the walls behind them. The four of them jump at the sudden intrusion.
The local firefighters immediately stood to attention, the card game already forgotten. Dean’s heart stopped as they relaid the address on them. It was familiar, too familiar.
Everything, other than the address, was out of their minds, the mission and how they could save the victims was the only thing they could think about. Dean pulled at his red suspenders, attached to the yellow bottoms of his uniform, over his arms and navy v neck and grabbed one of the many coats from the rack. They all assembled into the fire truck and set off the siren, driving to the set location where the fire was.
You opened the door, seeing the stairs instantly, you made your way up there. Coughing, you squinted your eyes and lifted your sweatshirt to cover your nose and mouth, taking precautions of the fact that if too much smoke got into your lungs, too quickly, you could die too, unable to save yourself and the little boy, Sam.
Your leg got caught on the last step, the fire that danced along the wooden railing of the stairs nipping through your denim clad leg, causing you to wince at the small amount of pain it had caused.
'Sam! Sam, can you hear me? I’m gonna try and get you outta here okay? I need you to tell me where you are.’
There was a weak knocking sound but you heard it nevertheless. It was the second door to the right. You could feel the air getting thinner as you ventured more into the house. Another part of it has collapsed into itself, narrowly missing you by a hairs breadth, if you hadn’t moved you would’ve been knocked out by the ceiling.
The flames were crawling up the frame of the door, but you used all of your strength to boot the door open. After a few tries, it shattered and swung open, revealing Sam in the corner. He was slowly falling into unconsciousness, you moved quickly but carefully, you couldn’t let him slip into the darkness. You slapped the side of his face trying to reawaken him, he groaned and his eyes fluttered open again.
'It hurts.’ He mumbled.
'Hey Sam, you gotta stay with me, okay? We gotta work fast and get outta here. Can you do that? Can you walk if I help you up?’
'It hurts.’ He repeated.
'I know.’ You said, screaming as the heat tore through your jeans and scorned your leg. You were going to need a bandage for that. 'Please Sam, can you please try, for me? We gotta help you out.’
The little boy whimpered. 'Okay.’
You smiled at him, helping him up, allowing him to lean on you, to support him. You heard the cracking of the ceiling again, reflexes caught up with you, picking up the fragile boy melding him to yourself, protecting him with your life, your body acting as a shield.
You hissed as the pressure got too much but hobbled back to the stairs, hopping on one foot you managed to get down to the bottom of the stairs. Thinking there would be no more complications, you sped up as you rushed towards the door, shoving the little boy in front of you. Trying to move further out of the house, you couldn’t, you realised why when you looked down, your leg had been caught again but this time your leg had been trapped between two clumps of heavy wood. You couldn’t move an inch the material holding you down from where you had fallen and your body had been refused the right to get back up.
Sam turned as he no longer felt the weight of you beside him, he coughed before a scream ripped through the both of you.
'Sam! Go, get out! Just get…t'safety.’ You breathed as you floated in and out of consciousness.
The young boy tried to move the constricting beams off of her, it was then he realised he couldn’t do it, he ran out and followed her orders but then he ran to the first two firefighters that exited the truck, tugging on their uniform arms, dragging them closer to the burning house.
'She’s still in there! A woman’s still in there! You have to get her!’
After the fireman checked over the boy for any major injuries, he nodded and called over a paramedic to look after and treat the boy. The firefighter and his partner, in the protective uniform, mask and all, fled into the burning building and into the flames, searching for the woman that the young boy had mentioned.
The moment they set foot in the door they could tell they had a limited amount of time before it was too late. They didn’t know how long the woman had been inside the house for, all they knew was that the mysterious, brave, courageous woman had saved Sam without a second thought. She was reckless; they knew that much, and although she had saved Sam, she put herself in danger.
The firefighters spotted her immediately, her body planted chest down, her legs trapped between wooden beams, her eyes rolling under her eyelids as she fought against the darkness.
The pain in your leg was so bad that she no longer registered it. She gave into the flames and her fate would be sealed, she would die, but she would die having saved a young boy from his own death.
The older firefighter struggled to lift the beam without causing anymore damage, and that son of a bitch was heavy, it wouldn’t be a surprise to the Louisianan if she broke her leg, but right now they had to focus on lifting the beam, getting her out and treating her as quickly as possible.
‘Jo, Garth, get in here quick or we lose the stairs and the ceiling’ll collapse onto us.’ Benny speaks into his walkie talkie, in the meantime, he had managed to move the excess weight off of her and rolled her onto her side, hopefully clearing her airways. 'Brother we gotta act quick, otherwise-’
'I know. I know, let’s keep going.’
'Dean, I got a pulse but it’s weak. You got the oxygen on you?’ He inquired to his partner.
Dean worked quickly, his equipment bag dropped down on the floor and he whipped out the oxygen mask placing it over her nose and mouth. With the victim in the correct position, they put the board under her body and twisted her so that she was lying on top of it.
'Alright, Cher, we’re gonna get you outta here in no time.’ He tried to speak encouraging words to her, thinking that if she could hear them, it would help.
Dean imputed, 'that’s right. Just hang tight sweetheart, we’ve got you, okay? We’re gonna take good care of you.’
'On three, okay?’ When Benny nodded, Dean began to count. 'Ready.’ The men tightened and flexed their hands over the bars. 'One, two, three.’
And they swiftly lifted the woman up, as smoothly and as painlessly as they could. They wanted to make sure that she was comfortable even though they knew trauma had been inflicted both physically and emotionally.
You groaned in pain as your body was jostled. Your back feeling the impact of the burns, you tried to sit up but you were tied down to the board the two firefighters were carrying you on.
Carefully trying to move your lower limbs, your scream tore through your throat; you felt the grinding of the fractured bones in your leg and the skin threatened to tear a larger hole, splitting the tissue even further. You didn’t even bother to wipe away the tears that slipped down your cheekbones, falling close to your ears.
The pain was excruciating but the oxygen, thank god, had your breathing under control; rhythmically even, surprisingly after your small but excusable outburst.
It seems to simmer after you had been handed over to the paramedics and carefully placed on a gurney, where they wheeled you into the ambulance, the last thing you heard being the firefighters voice telling the paramedics that they would follow in the truck behind after the put the fire out. You felt a hand on the uninjured side of your head and heard a deep voice thanking you but you didn’t know why.
