Genuine question, what is the non mathematical definition of probability? I do realise people (myself included) aren't doing rigorous mathematics whenever they talk about probabilities but colloquial use of "probability" is just making extremely rough approximations in the general direction of mathematical probability, isn't it? What other direction could colloquial probability be trying to point in?

#maybe this post meant 'a question is phrased like it's inviting people to guesstimate then telling them they're wrong to do so'#but I can't tell if that's what it's saying #i think it's fair to say people got a question wrong if they made a very far off guesstimate to something with an exact answer #as long as you're not mean about it. but you shouldn't be mean about people getting things wrong anyway #this criticism might make more sense to me if I knew what jan misali was vaguing #but as it is i cannot parse it #because I can't think of a situation where there is a colloquial meaning of probability #that gives a different but equally valid by its own definition meaning from the mathematical one #i do share op's dislike of trick questions designed to make you feel dumb #i just do not understand what definition of probability he's talking abou5 #*about #...uh sorry for reblogging this with commentary a month late #idk why it was idling in my drafts
